An excellent source of information for the layperson or serious student of American education systems. Dr. Fowler explains in great detail a variety of such substantive areas as the meaning of policy; power and education; a discussion of the policy environment; some types of political systems and culture; ideological and value systems; who sets the stage in the making of education policy; the various stages of the policy process and so forth. Enjoyable! Thorough! Substantive!

Educational Leaders.......2001-03-13

This book was very easy to read and understand. Coming from a teaching background, and not knowing anything about policy making, this book was a true education. I used it in my grad class, and every student commented on the ease of understanding and the interest in the text. This is a must buy if you want to learn anything about education, teaching or being an administrator!

Inspiring Book: Living The American DREAM.......2007-08-29

This book authored by Mark Brunett, the producer who popularised reality TV, not only in USA but throughout the world - beginning with Survivor and his other hit series, Eco-Challenge.

This book accounts of his journey mainly on these two TV series which he produced. Survivor fans would be most pleased to read the insights on what went behind the scenes to set up each Season's series - from location scouting, logistics and negotiations, not to mention his dream and passion. And this is where it comes in handy and useful for us, who want to learn the art of negotiation, and to be inspired by how a simple British who made good in the American dream.

Mark also shares his insights on how to continue to be creative and re-invent the Survivor series, plus his other hit reality TV series, which shows that we should not rest on our laurels.

There are a lot of interesting points in the book which are highlighted in boxes, giving emphasis to us readers. These are helpful pointers to note what Mark wants us to pick-up and learn.

There is one particular interesting section of the book which he mentioned during his training days where he and his mates were trained to do somethings 'impossible'. Of course they succeeded, and that truly inspires that nothing can stand in between us and our dreams!

In this book, Mark also mentions about how he met idol Donald Trump, and finally even worked with him on The Apprentice. Together with his meeting with Martha Stewart too.

In all, this book truly inspires those who inspire to be in the entertainmenmt industry especially TV producers, Survivor fans, and even those who just want to read an inspiring book.

I'm a huge Apprentice and Survivor fan - so of course I had to get the book of creator of both these concepts. This book was such a page turner for me. It provides such an engaging mixture of Burnett schmoozing with Hollywood royalty like Spielberg to his first entrepreneurial exploits selling t-shirts to his own survivor-esque experiences. It's described as a rags to riches story - which it is but to me it showed that the real currency in the world is ideas - and Mark Burnett is full of them!

A little too much SURVIVOR and not enough MARK BURNETT.......2007-01-10

I would have loved to hear more about the steps Mark took towards success. Reading about survivor for over half the book got rather dull, although the show is his bread & butter. Reading about his experiences coming over from the U.K. as a Para-trooper, ending up a Nanny, selling shirts in Venice Beach from a fence, to his first experiences before Making-It bigtime were very enjoyable.

If there would have been more detail on these things and a little less emphasis on every single survivor show then I wouldn't have been able to put it down.

If your a survivor nut (which I'm not) then this may just be the book your looking for. If your looking for a truly interesting bio on a power player within the entertainment industry I highly recommend checking out The Operator by Tom King which is all about David Geffen (The G in Dreamworks SKG movie studio, Geffen Records, etc...)

"A great 'Rags to Riches' story".......2006-05-08

I'm a big fan of anything inspiring. Mark Burnett is the father of reality TV. He is a man of vision, and unafraid to take "calculated risks"--something a lot of people would like to do, but are either afraid of failure, or procrastinate "jumping in". Though I didn't read his first book, I did scan through it briefly. This book is much more in depth. I do agree with other reviewers; the book does lack detail concerning his earlier life, and some of his failures (1st marriage eg.). All in all, this is a great book, written by someone who has accomplished a great deal in his life. Personally, I am bored to tears with 'Reality TV', but it has played a big part in television entertainment the last decade. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more from life, and is willing to make the effort.

Gets tiring.......2006-05-03

While few can argue Mark's rise to fame and fortune is anything but spectacular, but to believe that virtually every decision he's made in his life has turned out fantastically well is a bit hard to swallow. At every turn (which happens to be accompanied by the phrase..."I jumped in...") is another remarkable success.

If he showed a bit more vulnerability in his stories, it would have been more believable, insightful and inspirational.

I also could have done without excruciating detail of every season of survivor...it got a bit old.

Good for a basic course of marketing.......2007-02-07

This book is really helpful for students who are in their basic course of marketing. It has lots of graphics that make it easier to read and understand.

I'll ad some pictures to make it more atractive. And some color too. It's so black and white.

Besides I think the author needs to focus. He jumps from one idea to a different one. That is very common in all of his books.

A Very Good History of Work in Latin America.......2007-09-06

This book is a very good history of work (not organized labor) in Latin America. The author's deifintion of work is "what someone does to make a living." David McCreery covers the history of work in Latin America from the late 15th century to the late 20th century in less than 200 pages. The book covers the work of different races, classes, and genders, with sections on slavery, mining, agricultural work, the military, merchants, artisans, beggars, domestic servants, immigrants, industrial labor, etc. All this is very organized in the book, and the author does a very good job of placing Latin American work within the context of the global economy. This book shoud be read by any student of Latin America or work.

Avoid at all costs!.......2002-03-30

This -- unfortunately -- is a terrible book. It is badly in need of editing. It is obvious from the authors' introductory chapter that their command of the English language is marginal at best. It would have helped to have a native English speaker review the manuscript before publication.
Even worse, the level of the contributed papers varies so widely that this book cannot serve as either an introduction or as a survey for knowledgable readers. I was hoping that at least one paper would explain the basics of conjoint analysis. But most of the authors either avoided technicalities, or else assumed that readers were already familiar with the model and its variants. Not one of them bother to explain the terminology, to write down a model clearly and succinctly, and to explain how the analysis works.
Overall, this was quite a disappointing book

eh- it was required reading.......2001-05-30

Well, I had to buy this book because it was required for one of my management courses. However, since it was my one and only strategic management book, I don't have a frame of reference except with other course texts. As such, it seemingly did an adequete job in prodiving the necessary information. There were times when the professor did have to supplement the text with outside sources, but not too much. The text overall was a little dry, but not overly so- heh, not like my economics books =) (I was an economics undergrad major) If anything, I wish the book utilized more specific corporate examples in its attempt to explain concepts- And perhaps a larger review in strategic tools (such as 5 forces) would have been helpful.
