Customer Reviews:
Very useful book.......2007-06-01
This book really helped me understand how the STAR works. It also helped me realize that even though my son knew the material, he did not have the appropriate test-taking skills (like, making a good guess, moving on if he didn't know a particular problem). We only did the practice tests, and did not read the other information. I found it very useful. Towards the end of the book, he had mastered the art of "moving-on".
We also tried the beestar web-site as recommended by the another reviewer, but we did not find that quite as useful. The web-site only tests the students with 10 questions at a time. This book was much more realistic about how an actual test looks. I also agree with that reviewer, that this book is not for teaching to the kids, but only for practicing test-taking skills, once they have learned the material.
I would certainly recommend this book.
nice warm-up.......2005-02-17
A nice book to practice the STAR tests. It gives concise reviews of what the kid needs to know, so you can check her readiness. The practice items are very similar to the real tests, a very helpful warm-up. Note that such a thin book doesn't do much to improve math or reading. That requires daily learning in school and study in home. There is a nice web site http://www.beestar.org you can use weekly to assess your child's skill levels step by step. With the fundamentals in place, this book is a nice warm-up.
helpful workbook for children and parents.......2001-01-23
this is a great book. there are many practive exercises to help kids prepare for these new tests, and they are fun to do, with explanations. good information on how the test is structured. definitely helpful!

Customer Reviews:
If you like quotes for papers this is good reference material..........2007-04-13
This was a gift from someone. I usually go looking for specific quotes on topics when writing a paper, or giving a speech, and this book is a good compilation of quotes pertaining to achieving success in your life, or as to what constitutes success. This includes sections on topics like competitiveness, aggressiveness, setting up goals, etc. I usually enjoy reading books like these through when I get them so I have an idea of what quotes there are, by whom, and where I can find them. It's a lot easier to find quotes online nowdays, and so I don't need to have books around like this, but it is always a useful reference to have laying around.

Success by Pincott.......2006-04-29
This book reads like a Profiles in Success story. There are
hundreds of bright musings by contemporaries from John Stuart Mill
to Aristotle Onassis to Albert Einstein. John Stuart Mill discussed the interconnectedness of ideas. Aristotle Onassis said that success comes from knowing something that no-one else knows.
In the case of Aristotle Onassis, he purchased fleets of surplus
United States carriers for practically nothing. Then, he turned
around and utilized them to deliver world oil. Albert Einstein
labelled work as "x", play as "y" and silence as "z".
This volume is perfect for students of literature, journalism,
historical buffs and generalists everywhere.
Succinct & Inspiring.......2005-08-08
This book will lift you up whenever you feeling down. In life, too many negativities are being thrown at us daily. This book will serve as a reminder that our successful forefathers have gone through the exact trying times as us before they saw light at the end of tunnel. Take life challenges at the chin, fight strong, it ain't over till you say so.
Book Description
Get the hands-on guidance you need to understand how to work with the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF), Version 4. MSF is a deliberate and disciplined approach to technology projects based on a defined set of principles, models, disciplines, concepts, guidelines, and proven practices from Microsoft. MSF has a long history of helping teams and organizations become more successful in delivering business-driven technology solutions to their customers. Written by an expert with extensive experience consulting and training people in the use of MSF during the software development lifecycle, this essential reference explains MSF in easy-to-understand terms with practical examples and case studies. It sets the stage for better understanding the specializations of MSF (such as MSF for Agile Software Development and MSF for CMMI- Process Improvement) that have been released as part of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System.
Customer Reviews:
Very good process framework description.......2007-10-19
A very good description of the MSF processes. Concise and essential; before reading this book I even didn't know of the existence of Microsoft Solutions Framework: at the end of the book I have confidence with the processes and the models.
The only thing that could be emproved is the description of Principles and Mindsets, that I found a little bit abstract.
Anyhow I strongly reccomand this book for all MSF neofites.
Many good ideas on the SDLC.......2007-05-26
This book explores version 4 of Microsoft's Solutions Framework, the high-level guidelines Microsoft follows for their software development lifecycle. MSF, and hence this book, is rather abstract. Therefore, it won't tell you step by step what you should do. But hopefully you are aware that there is no such thing as perfect SDLC process- each situation demands finding the best solution for the specific context involved.
This book has some great points - from the foundational principles such as "foster open communications" and "partner with customers" to the way project "phases" are renamed "tracks" to emphasize their overlap. And therein lies the strength of this book - it forces the reader to consider just about everything that should be considered from inception through delivery of a software project.
In terms of drawbacks, the biggest one is that the book focuses virtually exclusively on huge teams in huge projects. The paragraph or two talking about combining advocacies is entirely insufficient. Even when one person handles most of a project, all the aspects need to be considered and covered. One drawback the book avoided was focusing on Microsoft and/or Microsoft technologies. Aside from a couple of minor plugs for specific product, this book is technology and product agnostic.
Overall, this book is well-written and useful.
Excellent material!.......2007-01-04
This is a mandatory reference to anyone who wants to use MSF in projects. In this book, Mike presents all the essential concepts and how to apply them.
A Handy Team Building Guide for Project Managers.......2006-12-09
I got the book as a gift from a friend and found it helpful for my cross-country project. Although I have not done reading this book while writing this review, I found the approach in the book is very practical and would like to share my feedback. Team communication has always been a challenge to my US-Japan-China projects. Not only does everyone have different time-zone, experience, or priority/urgency, but some of us also cover multiple projects at the same time. The book shows an approach and I adopted to evaluate my solution delivery environment. After communicated the assessment and objectives to my team members what to expect and take pre-planning actions for cost control, quality assurance, scheduling, and risk control! Amazingly, the meeting was naturally turned into issue solving and team collaboration discussions. Most of us left for a clearer understanding of what we want to achieve in mind. It was something I was not expecting. It is a good tool to keep in mind!

Useful Book.......2007-08-04
This book has sat on my desk for the last year and has been a very valuable tool in my job. I have created some really complex reports with the help from this book. It didn't get 5 stars due to a few vague areas that I feel could have been more thoroughly explained, but overall, a very well written useful book.

Book Description
The traditional project management rules do not apply in the software world. While not all software projects operate in a state of crisis, it is certainly true that most do. Accordingly this book approaches software project management from two directions: (1) how to plan and manage a software project; and (2) how to regain control of a project that has been overwhelmed by events.
Essentials of Software Project Management provides real-world strategies to make every software project more organized and less frantic.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, practical guide for software project mgrs.......2000-01-11
Dr. Bechtold's text is an excellent starting point for anybody new to software project management, or for current software project managers who know that current methods are lacking. The book uniquely lays out the steps which can assist in the planning process and keep a project on track.
While many elements in the text can be found in other project management texts, Essentials provides a practical roadmap typically lacking in other texts. Further, Dr. Bechtold manages to bring to the fore the critical, soft factors which make or break a project.

Customer Reviews:
A good overview.......2006-02-21
You will not be able to defeat your competitors by imitating them, says Michel Robert founder and president of Decision Processes International, Inc. Instead you must find something that you do better than your competitors, something different. Michel Robert has created a step-by-step method you can use to create a winning business strategy based on what you do best, not what your competitors are doing.
1. Identify your company's driving force. The driving force of your company can be either a skill set, a kind of technology or a specific market segment. All decisions, including product development, customer to target and markets to enter are based on your driving force.
2. Write a short business concept. The business concept should address the specific types of products/services, customers, market segments and geographic markets to which your strategy applies, and how the company will add value to these products/customers. The business concept should also have a tone of growth and a direction for the future of the organization.
3. Identify and nurture the skills or areas of excellence needed to implement your strategy. An area of excellence is something your company does better than anything else it does, and better than anything the competitors do. Your areas of excellence must be aligned with the driving force of your company.
4. Identify the critical issues you must address to implement the strategy. Address critical issues for implementation in four areas: Structure, Processes/Systems, Skills/Competencies, and Compensation. Create operational and strategic plans for improvement. Make sure you budget enough resources to make everything happen.
Robert also provides tips on how to anticipate and manage the strategies of your competitors.
· Make sure that your strategy puts you in a position to control or influence your market.
· Identify your competitors as well as their driving forces and strategies.
· Attack your competitor's strategy by diluting, diminishing or neutralizing their areas of excellence.
Thickest Marketing Brochure ever!!!.......2005-09-01
This book is the thickest marketing brochure I have ever read. The case studies was interesting BUT it is all about trying to get you to use the authors (very expensive I'm sure) services to "guide" you through the process. On page 173 there is an example where some CEO told Michel Robert that he is the only person in the room that would stand up to him (to the CEO that is) or something to the likes of it - get over yourself mate.
Gets the job done.......2003-11-06
I first read "Strategy Pure & Simple (I)" back in the early '90s, just before embarking on my first strategic planning job. Since then, I have managed strategic planning and implementation processes at a total of six different operational subsidiaries of two very large financial services groups.
As a financial controller and later a CFO, I have read a great many other books and articles about strategy and planning. Most of those were actually quite interesting, but when it came down to setting up and managing a actual, real-life planning process, I always turned back to Strategy Pure and Simple, because it is just GOOD ENOUGH.
- It includes all important issues that must be addressed during planning;
- more importantly, it reminds you of staying focused on those issues that happen to be key to your company (given its market, own caracteristics, timing, resources, etc.);
- still more importantly, it insists on interaction between the planning team and the management team, and helps with examples of visual aids and cues;
- it really helps a lot in communicating with line and senior managers during the planning process, getting them involved, assuring buy-in, and finally ensuring that the plan, when finished and approved, actually is implemented by those in charge. And, in the end, that is certainly what matters most.
I have now joined a new company in another industry, and have to manage yet another strategic planning process. Well, the best I can say about Strategy Pure & Simple is, I have fished out my 1993-vintage copy, and look forward to using it once again.
Are you so stupid that you need this book?.......2002-07-04
This book is like any other drivel about corporate strategy - figure out what you do well, do more of it and cut the rest. Sounds great when you grossly oversimplify your business. Know what really works? Fire anyone who is stupid, lazy, or unproductive.
PS- If Michel Robert is so smart, why can't he learn English?
Another clone.......2002-01-10
Unfortunately I bought this book after "The Power of Strategic Thinking" that I found full of very interesting ideas, insightful and thought provoking.
If I only knew that it has almost no differences with "Strategy Pure and Simple" I would've never done it. The book is written by copy-and-paste method. There are whole pages and chapters there that were not even worded differently - direct citations from the previous book. The only enhancement - pictures in "The Power of Strategic Thinking" look more silly but are actually the same.
There are probably some fans of Mr.Robert who buy all his books as collectible items but to me it seems like cheating - the same product under new cover. Total disappointment. It also brings doubts about all `true stories' Mr.Robert tells about his successes with 300 companies.
Book Description
“Focuses on the quality of designs....offer[s] advice on laying out and equipping the workshop, tips on how tools and machinery can be improved and adapted, wisdom on obtaining and converting timber, and reverse chucking. Projects chapters cover lidded pots and boxes, bowls and hollow vessels. Includes more than 100 examples of the author’s work.”—Woodshop News.

Woodturning - A fresh approach.......2006-11-03
Not really fresh as this book has been 'out' for some time but excellent tips, pics and explanations and a 'must have' for any new turner keen to absorb ideas and methods.
A Woodturners view of "Woodturning A Fresh Approach".......2000-10-03
This book has something for all levels of woodturner from beginner to expert. Robert has used a large number of very good photographs to illustrate his approach to woodturning and together with some thought provoking text he will inspire most hobby turners to try new projects or alternative ways of doing the job. The illustrations are so good that for those turners too busy to settle down and read all the text most of the messages will come over load and clear.
Roberts technique for hollow forms is refreshingly simple. He achieves very effective results without resorting to expensive tools and his way of supporting the hollowing tool is simple and cheap to implement.
The Illustrations of his finished items are stunning and should give inspiration to all but the most expert gallery turners.
I do not buy many woodturning books these days but this one I already prize.

Book Description
A History of Money presents a detailed history of money from Charlemagne's reform to the end of the Silver Wars in 1896. John Chown provides a summary of 20th century events and an analysis of how the past relates to present problems. He shows that most difficulties associated with money today have precedents in the past. Chown covers the great periods of monetary disputes: Henry VIII and Sir Thomas Gresham, Isaac Newton's Great Recoinage of 1696, Ricardo and the Bullion Committee Report, the battle between the banking and currency schools, and the issues of bimetallism and European monetary union in the late 19th century. The monetary theories of such diverse figures as Locke, Defoe, Swift and Sir Walter Scott are discussed as well as those of many economists. The book provides international coverage and includes material on the controversial private banking period in the United States between Independence and the Civil War.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining but not a reference.......1999-12-22
Chown, a practitioner instead of an academic, is wise and pithy, covering a lot of territory from Charlemagne to the end of the 19th century. He wisely gives equal time to coins, paper money, and bank deposits. He knows the academic literature, but writes mainly for educated laypeople. The book is fun to read, but is too short and anecdotal to be a reference. But you will learn that many 20th century controversies in monetary affairs go back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance. See how playing sleight of hand with banks and paper money has proven seductive for generations. The terminology changes, but not the dilemmas and temptations. And wisdom is likewise of long date, namely the work of Richard Cantillon around 1720, David Hume around 1750, and Henry Thornton in 1802.
Better books in this vein include Jim Grant's Money of the Mind", and Glyn Davies's "A History of Money from Ancient Times to the Present Day." Somebody should also bring Lloyd Mints's "History of Banking Theory" back in print.

Book Description
This book focuses on the money of Eastern Central Asia to c. AD 800, a period of over 900 years, across a vast geographical area with a very diverse population of different cultures and traditions. The only relevant historical accounts are those found in the Chinese dynastic histories, yet these contain few references to money in Eastern Central Asia. This study therefore depends almost entirely on the archaeological evidence for money found at sites in the region, in the form of coins and contemporary documentary evidence. The book is arranged in four parts. The first part presents the background to the study, the second the numismatic evidence, the third gives the evidence for money in the contemporary documents excavated at sites in Eastern Central Asia, and the concluding part brings together the data from the numismatic and documentary evidence to create a new framework for money in early Eastern Central Asia.

Book Description
ELECTRE and Decision Support focuses on the areas of engineering and infrastructure investment. It begins with some general comments about the different decision components within the project planning process - the definition of objectives, the identification of alternative courses of action, the establishing of criteria, the evaluation of alternatives and the final recommendation. The authors highlight the ability of Multicriteria Decision Aid to reconcile the economic, technical and environmental dimensions of the projects for its planners. They emphasize the complexity of this process, illustrating the importance of identifying the stakeholders within it, as they greatly influence the definition of the decision criteria. A brief case study illustrates these different aspects. Following a comparison of Cost Benefit Analysis and Multicriteria Decision Aid, the introductory chapter sets out the structure of the book, with four subsequent chapters devoted to the methodology of ELECTRE and three outlining case studies involving different versions of ELECTRE. The chapters concentrating on the ELECTRE methodology first give an overview of the main MCDA methods before presenting the ELECTRE method in detail. Each chapter answers the following questions: (1) In what context should the ELECTRE methods be chosen? (2) Which version of the methods is most appropriate to apply to a given problem? Another chapter deals with a critical and delicate problem within MCDA - how to adequately assess the role played by each criterion in a given decision problem, and how this translates into an appropriate weighting for it. Each one covers a different civil engineering discipline and each uses a different version of ELECTRE. The final chapter on methodology presents some accessories which, when used with ELECTRE, can greatly enhance its usefulness in practice. This book is outstanding in many respects. I am convinced that the simple, clear and concise style of the authors will make this book accessible to very many readers. No important aspect of the subject is neglected, and the concise nature of this book does not hinder its originality. Last but not least, the manner in which the case studies are described allows the authors not only to demonstrate the validity of the approach and procedures presented, but also to help the reader understand how to apply them in an effective manner. Taken from the Foreword by Bernard Roy, University Paris-Dauphine
