Critical Starting Point for Global Transformation.......2007-09-17

I respectfully encourage all serious reviewers to avoid the video review option. The video review sacrifices both rapid scanning of diverse views, and the ability to create added value from automated text search.

edutopia is a true gift to humanity from the George Lucas foundation. I consider the book and the DVD to be a superb starting pointfor the necessary global transformation.

This is a superbly crafted multi-media teaching tool that every teacher, parent, and administrator will learn from and be strengthened by.

My only disappointment is that the book's sponsors and authors focused so narrowly on just the USA and how the wisdom in this book might be applied within our existing academic and vocational infrastructure. My own focus is on the five billion poor who do not have the time for 18 years of rote education. Simply by subsidizing cells phones and creating a global network of 100 million volunteers using Telelanguage.com, we could offer free education to the five billion poor, and our own population, "one cell call at a time." Education is the only way we can create stabilizing wealth--this excellent book set its sights too low.

Great Resource for Educators.......2005-09-13

This is one of those text books you have to keep. It's not expensive enough to be a text book in the first place. It has lots of great references to websites teachers should make use of. I've been passing the website information on to my computer literate teaching friends.

This is exactly what it promises to be --a very informative description of the best learning contexts that are being built with new technologies. Rather than celebrating the technology it focuses on the relationship between and among people and the way in which new forms of information and communication are reshaping these relationships.

If you want to think beyond the two covers of a book and 4 walls of a classroom, if you want to redesign schools and their communities as places of serious, playful learning in social contexts, this book will push your thinking. Yes, this book (and the 11 short movies) celebrates learning. No, this book is a not a critical examination of research that validates the learning outcomes although, for some of these projects, such studies exist.

A "success story" has value because it shows us how people have come to work together to create projects that push the boundaries past the routine. The purpose of these stories is to not simply to inform. We need stories like the ones in this book to inspire us, to energize us to move beyond what is now, and to realize that each of us can and should be thinking about what can be.

I use this book in my graduate courses to expose students to the range of project-based learning applications of technology, the evolving role in technology in assessment, the ways in which communities have become more involved in education and how communication technology is reshaping professional development into a continual everyday process. While a consistent philosophical and theoretical position underlies the examples, students need to abstract the principles.

The range and choice of stories is excellent but the stories are brief. Personally, I would have preferred a single spaced book with twice the information on each of the projects and examples. But in a multimedia connected world, stories can link to web sites, videos, and more extensive information on the Edutopia site and on the web. Celebrating success may not fit the critical stance that some take toward the work of education, but with all of the challenges, it is inspiring when people connect.

Worst Teacher Education Text I Have Read.......2002-12-07

This book is nothing but George Lucas' personal tribute to the technology that made him a superstar. This book is filled with rhetoric, unsubstantiated claims and lots of full-color pictures. It does not have any use for someone in a teacher education program, as it reads more like a coffee table book. The included CD-ROM is the icing on the huge cake of b.s., and goes to show, once again, that if you are rich and famous, you can publish anything.

Good patterns and book design.......2007-09-22

If you crochet or both knit and crochet,you should be pleased with these patterns. The majority are for crocheters and,although the designs are traditional,there are quite a variety. This book is not for people who only knit or are looking for trendy designs because there are few of either. I especially liked the categorization for patterns (e.g., "easy stripes", "timeless classics")and the spiral binding is great (wish all knit and crochet books would use it).The graphed designs are generally well done. All in all,the book is worth the price.

Despite the negative reviews, I ordered this and am not disappointed. Of the 60 afghans, less than 1/3 are for knitters but crocheters have a nice assortment. The spiral binding which lays flat is great. The book has no introduction, no learning pages and also no attributions to the designers. Five of the big yarn companies have contributed all the patterns but I've been checking their websites and haven't found any of them around. Each pattern has one page of instructions and one very pretty page in color of the afghan. I really want to knit Go graphic which begins in the center of a square and works out with M1 stitches for 5 colors altogether. Another center start square also knit is Nursery throw.Octagon afghan also knit is an interesting one being done in octagons and squares. The crochet afghans have some interesting items also: Amish blocks is very attractive as is Harlequin diamonds and Prairie star. Floral water lily is a nice one in afghan stitch with a pretty embroidery worked after. Autumnal harvest done in a variegated with yellow and cream colors also, is very bright and attractive. There are several ripple and granny afghans to choose from.
Two unusal afghans are commemoratives, one for police and one for firemen and they need duplicate stitch or embroidery added. All of the afghans appear to be quite easy to make.

and a few to knit (16 out of 60 are knit patterns). As a knitter only, the few patterns in here that are knit are uninspired, the yarn choices blah at best (it IS nice to see some low to mid range yarns, but some of the choices are horrid), and I can get most of these patterns online for free. I am mostly peeved at the large amounts of publications out there that claim to be knit AND crochet, but turn out to be mostly crochet......I'm glad I picked this up at the library and didn't waste my money

Not for knitters.......2005-07-07

This book is a disappointment. I knit. I do not crochet. If there are 60 afghans in this book, there are probably no more than 10 or 15 for knitters. I don't know the exact number because they are not organized or identified in any way. You have to thumb through the book one by one and look for whether it calls for a needle or a hook.

The designs are uninspired. The yarns all look the same. Someone said it has a discount-store look to it, and that describes it very well. Actually, I've seen better designs at the discount store.

The one knit design I found interesting was photographed in a close-up, so you could only see about 12" of a large afghan with a big pattern repeat. Who would want to knit a 60" afghan without first seeing a picture of the whole thing?

The nice wire binding doesn't make up for what is, or is not, between the covers. "Under Cover" underperforms. There are lots of better books out there.

Pedestrian; very disappointing.......2004-10-25

I'm coming off a Trisha Malcolm high with her brilliant Vogue Crochet Scarf book. Because of that, I was felt doubly let down when I reviewed this book. I find the patterns very dull and worse, the large % of big "motif" or seasonal patterns amateurish. I read the entire book at a bookstore and found only one crochet block (a hexagon) worth note... and I was able to memorize that. I can't emphasize enough that this is a book you should see before buying. I'm sure glad I did.

FINALLY!!!.......2007-06-22

I bought a lot of books about crystals and minerals and all of them seemed copy-cat to each other, and a bit out of touch or sometimes too far from where we stand in THIS WORLD. Many of them sound like as if they were "guru" or masters of some kind without case study or their own experience. It is very frustrating the way many authors use certain words such as "psychic" and spiritualism in every page! Michel Gienger's crystal power, healing book is so different from all other authors. His approach to crystal healing is logically explained, easy to understand chemical components of minerals and how and why it works, practical and down to earth, even spiritual part is more based on how the change of our minds can change our lives by the aid of crystals, and not that crystals change our lives automatically. And photos are so beautiful that because of his book and its photos I bought so many crystals and minerals. Thank you Michael!!! I recommend his book to everybody who is interested in crystal power!

Must Have.......2007-03-08

If you've ever wonder why crystals and rocks effect you the way they do or if you are confused by all of the books out there that don't tell you how they arrived at what sometimes seems like arbitrary attributes...buy this book. This is a must have for any crystal healing reference library. Not your usual fare. "Crystal Power, Crystal Healing" supplies the missing pieces for working with rocks and crystals effectively. It explores why crystals have the effect they do..from their mineral classification and crystal structure to the actual chemical make-up....and how that effects their spiritual and healing properties.

WOW!.......2006-06-19

This appeared along my path for research for a book of my own because it scratched the surface of some topics that no other book even begins to contemplate. This book is thoroughly well researched, full of experiential knowledge, and elevates crystal healing to a new level. It is concise and simple enough for anyone to explore, but it is a great resource especially for the newer breed of crystal co creators that are emerging.

I cannot strongly reccomend this book enough to everyone!

Pretty Thorough.......2005-09-06

This is an excellent reference for crystal collectors, particularly those who are interested in the metaphysical properties of minerals and gemstones.

What makes this book unique is that it incorporates several elements into one volume. Many books that I have encountered describe crystals with the assumption that you know what they look like or they have pictures and geological data but do not describe the use of crystals. This book does all of these things.

There are colored photos and, when possible, more than one version of a crystal is depicted so that you can see what the different forms look like. If you are new to the study of crystals, this is an invaluable resource because it helps you to identify crystals through pictures and through its mineral properties, so if you are a "rock hound" you can still get a lot of benefit from this book.

The only detriment to this book is that it doesn't include more crystals! It covers many of the popular gemstones like amethyst, quartz, hematite, and agate, so you will still get great use out of this book. I only wish it was twice as long so that more minerals could be represented.

I also am also glad that this book is readily available on the internet as it took me a long time to find this book in the bookstore. Though it is spectacular, I haven't seen it in many mainstream bookstores, so when you see it, get it, in case you don't see it again!

In depth and easy to understand.......2005-03-06

I agree with all other reviewers that this is an incredible guide to crystals. This is my first book so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I'm so happy with it, I wouldn't want any other.

I love the way the author classifies crystals into eight categories according to their structure. My favorite part of the book, surprisingly, is "Discovering the connections between crystalline structures and lifestyles." I have an interest in psychology and classifying people into personality types. I never read a more accurate description of my personality with a lot of relavent advice.

Questionable value.......2001-05-06

I approached this book as someone looking to enter the advertising field on the business side. Having read fifty pages or so, I'm not very happy with it. The writing style uses confusing wording for what should be simple statements. Consider this classic: "In the post-future-shock era, contingencies are more common than uninterrupted progress" (pg. 58). Or "In a database-driven organization, salesmanship can slowly give way to the recitation of fact" (pg. 18). Eh? Sadly, one of the authors is supposed to be an authority on direct marketing--one would assume that he could at least write clearly. Also scattered throughout the book are assertions, such as "A theory of marketing (that has great validity) is that marketers can't make a mistake by overflattering their targets" (pg. 33) that are mentioned once and never supported, examined, or referred to later. The authors seem to assume that the audience will believe that assertion and others based upon the audience's own prior knowledge of the field. Also, some ad campaigns are mentioned as being faulty, without saying why.

Overall, I don't reccomend this book.

Excellent Resource.......2000-04-26

AdAge does it again. The nations best source for the ad trade puts out another great resource. This book is full of survival techniques for the aspiring and seasoned ad pro.

Crisis management that understands politics.......1999-09-02

I'm reading this book for an article I'm writing on crisis management. So far, this is the most helpful book I've read. Instead of being simply a list of prescriptions and platitudes, this book is very helpful in understanding the political dimensions of business crisis, particularly with respect to what the authors call "activist groups." I am very impressed with the even-handed treatment of corporate and activist group interests. Sometimes the authors do not seem as politically astute as they should be, but on balance this is a valuable book for any organization that must confront and responsibly respond to outside demands.
