          This paper aims at giving empirical content to the Basu and Weil (1998) [Basu, S., Weil, D.N., 1998. Appropriate technology and growth. Quarterly Journal of Economics 113, 1025-1054] theory of growth, in which localized innovation, assimilation of spillovers and differences in speeds of capital intensification yield diverse patterns of international convergence and divergence. The contributions of these sources to labor productivity growth are quantified for a sample of countries, using data envelopment analysis techniques. Regression analysis shows that the observed patterns were mainly driven by processes of creating spillover potential through capital intensification. Assimilation appears to be much slower than assumed in Basu and Weil's model.

              Description:
              Avoiding dangerous climate change is likely to require policies to mitigate CO"2 emissions that are substantially more ambitious than those currently being considered. For such policies, the issue of endogenous technological change becomes important, both to estimate the overall costs and to identify the intertemporally cost-effective combination of mitigation options. In this paper, we first discuss the recent literature that evaluates the potential for endogenous technological change to reduce mitigation costs, and the efforts to incorporate endogenous technological change into pre-existing integrated assessment models. Then we formulate our own integrated assessment model, the Model of INvestment and Technological Development (MIND), which allows analysis of the relationship between specific mitigation options and the costs of ambitious climate protection objectives. Our model reveals two important results. First, the incorporation of technological change in a portfolio of mitigation options can reduce the costs of climate policies substantially. Achieving the ambitious policy goals necessary to avoid dangerous climate change becomes feasible without significant welfare losses. Second, the different mitigation options are of different importance in achieving climate protection goals: improving energy efficiency becomes too costly as a major mitigation option in the long run. In the long run, fossil fuels have to be substituted by renewable energy sources because a backstop technology with the potential of learning-by-doing has the strongest impact on reducing the welfare losses due to climate protection. Furthermore, Carbon Capturing and Sequestration can allow for further reduction in the costs of climate protection and can postpone the need to transform the energy system from a fossil-fuel-based one to a renewables one.

                This paper explores some of the main elements behind poor productivity performance in Latin America under neoliberal reforms. I argue that free market reforms addressed only some of the elements shaping productivity growth, while neglecting others that are complementary and necessary for increases in productivity. A means comparison of different indicators for Latin America and a comparison income group shows that Latin American countries demonstrate, on average, poorer performance in technological capabilities, secondary enrollment rates and infrastructure. More activist government policies need to address these issues, if productivity is to rise in the future.

                    This is a wonderful book for both children and adult. (except sort of discouraging to see little kid skating that well and doing all the hard moves, like jumping a ramp.) There are great skating maintainence section and all the basic moves.

                          Pearce & Robinson have put together a very informative book with very current issues that managers today are dealing with.

                          2 out of 5 stars An Unpleasant Overview.......2003-11-13

                          I used this book in a graduate business class, and found it to be generally unpalatable, as did the rest of my class. My problem is largely in the self important, stilted writing style which is particularly notable in Chapter 3 under ecological factors (in which some popular, but scientifically questionable, theories seemingly influence the author's thinking detrimentally). As an aside, but a very distracting one, the layout of the book is absolutely horrid. There are numerous inserts, fact boxes, exhibits, and case studies scattershot throughout the book seemingly at random, which substantially breaks up the text. Additionally, many of the text boxes and examples involve copious texts and backgrounds in blue ink, which I am sure raised the production costs of this already very expensive book needlessly (not providing increased value to the end user...you would think they would read their own book).

                          Largely the chapters are enormous lists with overly wordy jingoistic explanations. The section on "SWOT Analysis" is particularly annoying. It tries to sound like it is based on highly scientific principles, whereas, in reality, it is still a bunch of subjective value judgments. (Guesses, mostly, in actuality.) The terminology rarely cuts through to the central point, making the book enormously long and unwieldily. Likewise, it is very difficult to look up things as much of the information is scattered in seemingly illogical places.

                          Overall, I obviously did not like this book, but gave it two stars despite it's faults due to some of the interesting case studies it contains. There are some excellent, thought-provoking cases examined. Unfortunately, there is insufficient discussion of these cases, which would have proven beneficial. The case studies aren't totally unbiased, either, as they largely are lifted directly from 'Business Week' (whose name and logo even appear on the cover) so is 'Business Week' didn't think it important, there is probably a dearth of information in the book on that subject.

                          1 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Class...........NOT.......2000-06-12

                          This book is as jaded and contrived as Dr Peirce's class. There is only one chapter worth reading #7, the rest of the book serves absolutely no value. Furthermore, I agree with the previous reviewer that Dr. Peirce makes some very strong statements in his class. However, why didn't the put them in his book? I guess other professors in the field would have laughed at him. Do not buy this book..........and save yourself 15 weeks of torture by not taking his class at Nova............MBA99

                          2 out of 5 stars Required reading for a Class.......1998-11-27

                          This book is a good general overview of strategic management but lacks well thought out insight into what makes a strategy successful. For example in class Dr Pearce calls SWAT analysis worthless. If that is the case then why doesn't he say that in this book? Furthermore, chapter 7 is the only worthwhile chapter in the book. But even then it lacks sufficient depth to be useful to a student or practitioner of strategic management.

                          Strategic planning as a process is nicely presented in this well written textbook. As an instructor of strategic planning at the master's level, I find the students like the book and cases and are able to create competent strategic plans using the process described. Very good resource book; one I have kept on my reference shelf.

Following an introductory chapter which sets the stage for the discussions that follow, the author addresses the concepts of the multinational company as formulated by idealistic advocates and vehement adversaries. Rubner shows that populist perceptions of the power of multinationals are of relatively recent vintage and derive from a variety of sources including religious and trade union leaders, politicians, businessmen, and academic theorists. The second section explores the actual day-to-day realities that govern the operation of multinationals and examines such issues as the inhospitability of host countries, the inability of large bureaucratic organizations to react quickly to changing conditions, and the hypersensitivity of multinationals. Finally, Rubner looks to the future, evaluating the revised strategies of Western multinationals regarding overseas investments. He concludes that the power of the major transnationals is diminishing--along with the legends that gave birth to that perception.

                                  One of my marketing classes is using this book. I have experienced so much PAIN reading this book that I have to give it a 3 star to release my frustration. The chapters are extremely long. The overall concept of the book is good. There are also interesting facts and exhibits, but sometimes the book keeps repeating itself. For example, in Chapter 16 Sales Promotion, the authors talk about consumer franchise-building promotions. The same concept appears later on in the chapter over and over as individual paragraphs. I understand that a lot of the marketing concepts are interrelated, but they can be expressed much more efficiently.

                                  This book is theoretical and full of examples of applied theories of advertising. It is presently being used at an AACSB accredited University in the Marketing department and students do enjoy it because of its current content and entertaining format.

                                  I have just completed reading Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing communications Perspective by Belch and Belch. I found it to be the best source of information available on this topic. The text is extremely comprehensive, yet very interesting to read. At my job as a marketing director, this book is invaluable. I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to develop an integrated marketing communications plan. I will also suggest it to my advertising agency.

                                  I found the soft cover cheaper originally but to my knowledge there's no difference between the two. The book ties advertising, pr, promotion, etc. together well all while giving real world examples with several illustrations and such. It's fairly easy to read and comprehend unlike other high-level marketing books.

                                              I enjoy Ray's work. His book walks you through the financial planning process and clearly illustrates how it is done right. The first step of the process is factfinding and educating. The second is suggesting solutions. Ray's mastery of the process shines through and provides enough information to help you get started with your own plan.

                                              This is an excellent book for the beginner to the more sophisticated person to consider when managing your retirement funds. Ray gives thoughtful insight into the potential investment strategies for three different "buckets of money". The difference in the 3 buckets is the time horizon the funds will be needed and the various amounts of investment risk that could be assumed in each time period.

                                              His plan makes amazing sense and I have utlized it successfully in my personal retirement plan (I am 46 & retired) and my mother's (who is now 70 1/2). I have listened to Ray's business talk show for the past several years and also seen him speak at a free weekend morning seminar in Portland, OR. His personal judgement and that of his "brain trust" is safe, sound and easily followed.

                                              I have purchased this book for myself and multiple family members/friends for their consideration. It has always gotten favorable reviews. I just purchased his newest book, "Ready..Set..Retire: Financial Strategies for the Rest of Your Life". I am anxiously awaiting it's delivery for any new information he has to share!
