I am a recovering lawyer. That said, as an entrepreneur, my partners always look to me to keep an eye on things legal, and this book has been my greatest ally in the effort.

The author and I share the same views about contracts: they should be clear; as brief as possible (without leaving out anything necessary); and in plain English.

This book will be a tremendous resource for anyone preparing a contract and for anyone reviewing a contract. You will find a wealth of hints, including plenty of examples of BOTH good and bad contracts and clauses, in addition to the fine commentary on the many types of contracts. In addition, the organization is very useful, with chapters focusing on the major types of contract businesspeople are likely to see. The chapters covering general subjects (including "Clauses. . .Standard and Dangerous") are good guidance for lawyers and excellent introductions for non-lawyers.

My battered copy saw so much action I had it rebound!

El presente texto tiene su origen en asesorías y talleres realizados en diversas empresas, con el objeto de apoyarlas en la implementación de procesos de mejoramiento de la calidad y la productividad a nivel operativo. En tales asesorías y talleres se utilizaban propuestas metodológicas de varios autores en materia de análisis y solución de problemas, aplicación de las siete herramientas estadísticas básicas utilizadas por los círculos de calidad y las llamadas «nuevas siete» herramientas y otras que vienen del campo de la ingeniería industrial y el desarrollo organizacional. Sin embargo, no obstante la utilidad de aquéllas y los logros alcanzados, el autor decidió en 1988 elaborar una metodología más adaptada a nuestra situación que reuniese los siguientes atributos:

Adaptada a problemas específicos de calidad y productividad.

Aplicable a los problemas medianamente complejos que se presentan a nivel departamental y de gerencia media para facilitar la estrategia en cascada del desarrollo de un proceso de mejoramiento. Ser lo suficientemente sencilla como para lograr en corto tiempo su uso en todos los estratos de la empresa.

Con tales características, surgió la primera versión 1988 del Manual de pasos y técnicas para el mejoramiento de la calidad y productividad a nivel operativo y departamental, el cual hemos utilizado y aplicado en casi todas, las funciones de la empresa, desde ventas hasta suministros, desde investigación y desarrollo hasta seguridad industrial, y en empresas diversas: servicios, alimentos, químicos, metalmecánicas, etc.

La aplicación nos ha demostrado que esta metodología certeramente nos conduce a resultados en dos vertientes:

1) la que se aprecia con mayor facilidad, la de disminución de desperdicios, errores, retrabajo, tiempos, costos, etc., y

2) la que sólo las organizaciones que han tenido la oportunidad de aplicarla pueden valorar: la de motivación, el acrecentamiento de la iniciativa individual y en equipo, a través del reforzamiento que significa el logro, el saber que se puede, el "lo hicimos").

Siendo la segunda vertiente la que permite el crecimiento permanente y el mejoramiento continuo, hemos querido mejorar y profundizar el manual a la luz de la experiencia vivida luego de múltiples aplicaciones, incorporando mejoras no sólo en el aspecto técnico y metodológico (los pasos y herramientas) sino también incluyendo las observaciones que, surgidas de la experiencia, facilitan su uso y permiten allanar la diferencia entre el conocer y el hacer. Por ello en cada paso y su secuencia y en cada técnica, además de decir el porqué darlo y las actividades a realizar, hemos incluido recomendaciones sobre desviaciones a evitar, indicaciones sobre el tiempo esperado de las sesiones y énfasis a realizar. También hemos incorporado algo que marca la diferencia con muchos manuales y cursos actualmente existentes en la materia, se trata de ¿cómo desarrollar un proceso en una empresa que conlleve a la aplicación por parte de la gerencia de la metodología de mejoramiento de la calidad y productividad permitiéndole aprender-haciendo?

This book consists of silhouettes and photos of various pottery forms. Very interesting design resource.

However, a better buy would be Neal French's "The Potter's Encyclopedia of Color, Form and Decoration: The Comprehensive References for Today's Ceramicist". It includes the exact contents of this book, along with Constant & Ogden's "Potter's Palette", along with some pages of additional decoration photos. (For that reason I'm giving this one only two stars).

....but I was a tad disappointed with the slight bias towards forms with lids and handles. Despite this, the book is a great guide for beginner and intermediate level pottery enthusiasts (using either hand throwing and coiling methods)as it contains a lot of ideas to make your next project! A good book to have if you are just starting out and want to break away from the traditional shapes of bowls and pots.

... well illustrated with photos of every type of shape and form... a picture book for potters! A fun reminder of forms often forgotten when busy producing a "type" of piece. Broken down into seven sections; including holloware, flatware and decorative, and further sub-sectioned by pages specifically for lids, handles and feet... each page has a color-coded technique key, as well as a photo example and drawn example of each shape or form. This well layed out and easy to follow book is a definite asset to any potter's library. Also includes term glossary.

In the midst of a US Presidential election, with the economy playing a major role, you can hear much todo about downsizing and offshoring. For a different take, try this book. Lee discusses not the US, but Taiwan. And over the period from the 1980s to the 1990s. Unlike current American ruminations about outsourcing Information Technology and call centres to India, this book mostly discusses manufacturing jobs that vanished in Taiwan. Over the period in the book, software and cheap communications were not a factor in the changes.

The book focuses also on female workers and their travails when laid off. The Taiwan manufacturing base of the 1970s and 1980s provided many with their first cash incomes and a means of entering a modern and relatively cosmopolitan lifestyle. At least, compared to a typical earlier alternative of subsistence farming.

Lee discusses whether the meaning of work changed, and if there was actually a diminishing of the work ethic, as remarked by some commentators of the time. The book gives a good view of Taiwanese society, and how it coped with massive change.

This book was just okay for me. I had a lot of information on Sales Kits and was looking for new information. I didn't get much from this book.

Be careful if you want to order this product because Amazon has not existence of it, although it is offered in 2 or 3 weeks. I placed my order in March (two months ago)and never arrived. Finally Amazon cancelled my order. What can I do?

Novice or expert this is a great guide.......2005-10-26

Don't be fooled by the title. This book is a complete guide to building high quality proposals. What appeals to me the most are the pages relating to selling value. Sales Proposal Kit for Dummies incorporates not only the building basics, but what material is necessary to build the perfect proposal. The templates are great, easy to use and more importantly, easy to understand. This book is must have for any sales library.

Poor proposal structure with good elements.......2005-08-02

With the fantastic reviews I had high expectations for this book, and was sorely disappointed. The advice given in the book is worthwhile, encompassing and I found good concepts, yet was also disappointed with the lack of things like bid/no bid processes. The test for any proposal advice given is how good the final proposal is. This is a guide that results in a narcisistic self focussed proposal that has an outdated look and feel.

In my oppinion "Persuasive Business Proposals" from Tom Sant is far superiour, and has been the basis for proposal processes in companies from GE, Boeing and downwards.

You can get good elements from this book, but don't use Bob Kantin's templates. If you do the work make sure you end up with a good updated proposal template in the end. This is not it!

Practical and Easy to Use.......2003-12-16

Finally, a book on proposals that doesn't just talk about the elements of a good proposal but, instead, walks you through the steps necessary to develop a great proposal. The value of the book lies in pulling it out and working through it as you write (or in my case redesign) a proposal. The author does an excellent job of explaining what should be accomplished in each section of the proposal. The book comes with a CD full of forms and materials, though I found the content in the book of much higher quality and value. This one's a keeper.

The core themes of this book are:
* that change is constant and continuous innovation the only viable response
* that successful innovation requires 'an holistic approach that aligns strategy and vision, process, leadership style and culture to the innovation ambition'
* that there are many ways to start on the journey, but the journey never ends. Innovation is ultimately a way of life.

The text is made up of sound advice, well arranged, and interspersed with short essays by experts in the field (such as Gary Hamel and Costas Markides). Each chapter ends with a summary list of 'anchor points'.

There is a good last chapter of suggested further reading.

A Must Read for anyone creating an innovative organisation!.......2003-06-09

This book takes great guru speak by interesting people like Gary Hamel and Costas Markides and adds to it insightful commentary by the author. Bettina von Stamm is not just an editor of all this wisdom; she is obviously expert in her own right, drawing on deep experience to navigate the reader through the "endless sea of innovation challenges". As entertaining as it is helpful.

Very rich book on how to make your company more innovative.......2003-05-04

I'm an innovation and strategy manager in The Netherlands and I've read many books and articles on the subject. This book stands out, because it offers a huge amount of information, best practices, thoughts, dilemma's and paradoxes on the subject. The author is responsible for running the Innovation Exchange Initiative at London Business School at wich Innovative companies exchange information. This position garantuees she can tap into the latest insights on innovation.
The book also has contributions from great thinkers on Innovation, like Gary Hamel, Costas Martides and so on.
I'm preparing my MBA dissertation on the subject of Innovation and this book offered the best insights so far.
Mind you: this book is NOT an easy to follow 5-step guide to innovation walhalla. You really have to think for yourself!
My overall opinion: highly recommended.
