This book is excellent. It really defines the role and job of a special education teacher. In fact my principal was so impressed with it that he ordered it for all the special education teachers in my building. Another principal also ordered it for her special education teachers.

It's been a while since I read this book. Though I'm a self-help junkie, and it's good to stop reading and start doing, it's also good to have a fundamental list of your favorites that you re-read once or twice a year. This book is on my re-read list, along with TRLT by Scott Peck, and Resurrection by Neville. What I can remember about the book is how the author, especially Danny likens the challenge of their past careers to grabbing your life and just doing it. One thing that sticks in my mind is how he says that it just ain't enough to post a picture of your dream house on the fridge. You really have to take action to get it.

          Book Description

Since the invention of double-entry bookkeeping, managers have judged a company's worth by sales and profits. Now, Richard J. Schonberger, the architect of the worldwide Just-In-Time revolution, reaches beyond "financials" to redefine excellence -- and reveals, with new benchmark data, how pioneers become dynasties.

Schonberger's pathbreaking new research reveals that, from 1950 to 1995, while "financials" dipped and soared repeatedly, industrial decline and ascendancy correlated perfectly with inventory turnover -- one of two key nonfinancial indicators and a bedrock measure, along with customer satisfaction, of a company's power, strength, and value. In this immensely readable book, he captures these new metrics -- the true predictions of future success -- in 16 customer-focused principles created from self-scored reports supplied by over 100 pioneering manufacturers in nine countries. Armed with new world-class benchmark data, Schonberger redefines excellence in terms of competence, capability, and customer-focused, employee-driven, data-based performance.

For front-tine associates to senior executives, Schonberger has written manufacturing's action agenda for the next decade. This book will be indispensable reading for manufacturing and general managers in all industries, as well as for pension fund managers, institutional investors, stock analysts, and stockbrokers.

          Customer Reviews:

          2 out of 5 stars What's the point?.......2004-11-24

Mr. Schonberger hoists the flag of what he calls 'Customer Focused Principles'- with all due respect to Covey's 'Principles' -and waits to see who salutes. He is still waiting.
With much name dropping, plenty of abbreviations - see, I know the jargon, many cited 'conversations' - see I am scholarly, and many random and pointless narratives about various companies - see, I am really scholarly and connected, Mr. Schonberger manages to waste the readers time while managing to obfusticate the principle of Total Quality Management and Lean Manufacturing. I came away from reading the book saying 'So what is the point'.

2 out of 5 stars Good and Not So Good Ideas; No Focus Whatsoever.......2003-07-03

Schonberger hits on several strong manufacturing ideas in this book, but overshadows these good points with a severe lack of focus. One comes away from this book with lots of buzzwords floating around in one's head, but no idea where to begin applying any of them, or what form such an application would take.

The mantra of the book appears to be "do everything," when what a lost manufacturing manager needs is help on what are the (very few) key points of control in a system, how to identify them, and how to use them to powerful effect.

The author would have you believe that "customer service" should be the goal of production. Nonsense. Customer service is a very important tool that is a means to an end: cash flow. If cash flow could be best guaranteed by ignoring customer service, then companies would be foolish to do otherwise.

As it happens, customer service is a vital key to production, but only so far as it directly or indirectly supports the financial engine that drives a company. Evidence: it would be trivial to design a production system that supports the customer better than any in the world and that loses all viability in month.

This book gets a couple of stars due to the presence of a few good thoughts, but the author seems to have no clue what to do with them, or which are most critical.

For better results, go straight to the source with Deming, or get some focus with Goldratt.

5 out of 5 stars Codifies manufacturing excellence.......1999-04-25

When Dick Schonberger first showed us a glimpse of the research that was going into this book, I could not wait to see "the real thing." This book is, like all his work, an important and major examination of what makes a manufacturing organization excellent. Built from "the numbers', as well as years of observations, Schonberger's work allows anyone - consultant, practitioner, teacher, executive - to understand the critical points at which a group defines its capabilities. HIs comprehensive References and Bilbliography show that he gets around; his overall vision shows that he sees where good process is headed. Read this book for a measured look at manufacturing progress over the past ten years or so.

            4 out of 5 stars Good Basics.......2002-11-22

I am a recent born-again knitter, having started again after 35 years of never touching a knitting needle! I forgot everything I had ever learned. Once I re-learned how to cast on, I found this to be a good reference book for the rest of the basics.

Abbey begins with all kinds of needles, regular and "special needs", then proceeds to the extra equipment like counters, stitich holders, ring markers, etc.

The next chapter covers all types of yarns, man-made and wools that include vicuna, cashmere, and alpaca. Also included is a description of how yarns are made and the history of yarn.

A really valuable section was the part on abbreviations since every pattern uses them extensively.

All basic techniques are covered: casting on, yarn over, increasing and decreasing, casting off, cross-overs, measuring, assembling and finishing.

The illustrations are good if no-nonsense, but I am glad I have a friendly knitting/yarn store nearby to demonstrate for me!

I was fascinated with the large section about knitting with ribbons, but I have a long way to go before I am proficient enough to do this gorgeous technique.

The final section was devoted to a huge variety of pattern stitches which I may someday be able to do--with lots of practice.

4 out of 5 stars A good, clear, solid reference.......2002-07-07

I bought this book many years ago when it was first published, but only recently have begun to appreciate it. After a hiatus from knitting, lasting nearly 20 years, I have taken it up again. I have bought some of the newer references to review the more advanced stitches and techniques, many of which I'd completely forgotten, but I have found this book, originally published in 1971, to be more complete and clear than any of the newer books I have. The text is good in explaining the techniques, and the illustrations are outstanding! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it contains none of the glossy, color illustrations or projects that characterize the newer references and which most of us have come to expect. As noted in another review, this is a no-frills reference; but the information is solid, and I'm sure I will be consulting this book often.

4 out of 5 stars Reliable, no frills knitting reference.......2002-04-29

First, a warning. This book has absolutely no frills. No patterns, no color pictures, just a lot of good kntting advice. Also, since it was written in the 70s, some of the knitting techniques are given different names than what a modern knitter is used to. For all this, the book is a wonderful addition to a knitter's library.

It is a book of a "knitter's knitter", I agree that it is not for a total beginner. The basics are rushed through in favor of more advanced techniques. There is a wonderful section on ribbon knitting and a very well researched chapter on various yarns, their origins and history.

Most of all, there is a section on knitting terms translated from other languages. Included are British terms, French, German and Swedish. This is a great help when dealing with the great number of wonderful knitting patterns available from other countries. (The very poular German magazine Rebecca, for example, though it comes with a translation booklet. Then again, if you ever lose it...) I consider this section a very valuable source.

Last of all, there are many fascinating stitch patterns to be tried, two handed fair isle knitting explained (though other books explain this technique too) and tips on argyle knitting.

The book is full of good information and you simply can't go wrong. Every knitter needs a good general reference book (or ten!) and this one is certainly going to be on my shelf.

            4 out of 5 stars A Good Basic Reference.......2002-04-22

This was one of the first books I bought when I decided that I needed some reference books. I still turn to it regularly, especially for the pattern designs in the back. This book provides a good overall reference and covers the basics that everyone should know, especially a beginner. I don't know if I would want to teach myself to knit from this book, although it does cover the very basics. I especially appreciate the breadth of the book and the pattern reference which is a good starter reference, rather than buying a second book. My first knitting book was the Leisure Arts "Learn to Knit" booklet and this book would make a good companion to that for a complete beginner. For the price I think it is one of the best overall references for a beginning or relatively inexperienced knitter. For a more advanced knitter, or one who is adventuresome, I recommend Montse Stanley's "Knitter's Handbook" although that does not have a stitch pattern guide.

                          Book Description

FORT RILEY AND ITS NEIGHBORS is a story of soldiers trying to save money and civilians trying to make it. Fort Riley stands today overlooking the Kansas River because army quartermasters in the 1850s thought that small steamboats could deliver supplies cheaply there. Civilians came to help build the fort and stayed to bid on the quartermaster's contracts for feed and fuel. Townspeople kept a covetous eye on Fort Riley's land and its resources, and they voted bond issues to build short-line railroads in order to get competitive freight rates from transcontinental carriers. The history of Fort Riley and its neighbors typifies the relations that evolved between the American people and their government throughout the American West. The settlers' approach to federal authority, at once supplicating and conniving, has persisted and thrived and become the national attitude.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read for students of early Kansas history........1998-10-03

Dr. Dobak has addressed an area of western history that is normally overlooked by the casual student, i.e., the synergistic relationship between a frontier military post (in this case, Fort Riley, Kansas) and the nearby communities (Junction City and Manhatten). The book covers the timeframe from when Fort Riley was founded (1853) until it was firmly established as a permanent army base (1895). This well-researched book draws heavily upon records from the National Archives and contemporary newspaper accounts. The statistics are a little overbearing at times and there is a tendency to be repetitious, but otherwise, this is a very informative book.

                          Book Description

With the dot-com revolution, an entire new breed of book--the technology/commerce title has emerges as the pioneer's guide. Discounting the initial-sales spike for this title, demand for Net Results has been growing, particularly over the last 14 months (coinciding with the increased attention paid to e-commerce). Net Results has received superlative reviews (see the book's Amazon webpage reviews as an example); the consistent theme in the comments is that the book is comprehensive; full of real-world advice; written by authorities of exceptional qualification; and has advice that is not easily outdated, reflecting an impressive understanding of and vision for web marketing issues of the near future. Simply: Net Results is a proven winner. This book is a walking tour of what to do and what to avoid, hosted not by a professional writer (as many competitive titles are), but by experts who rely on their own advice for continued success in their own dot-com businesses.

3 out of 5 stars Good Info - but got outdated in a hurry.......2002-11-21

Bought this to read over the weekend. Was a very good read, but what I found amazing is at least 1/3 off the web resources they list are either dead links or offer a totally different services than what was discussed in the book. Great for basics, great ideas - but they really need to update the book (which I would buy)

5 out of 5 stars Cool Info, Empowering.......2002-07-29

This book is well written and contains a lot of great content about Internet marketing. It was written by three CEO's whom have made their own success. I would say that its focus is more from the serious business perspective than for the armature home business newbie looking for some "how to?". But still this book was definitely worth my time. It was easily worth my 12 dollars! This book has many references which will really help out and all the theory is backed by statistics making all the data very convincing. I am sure that if any of those dot com's had this data, there would be more of them still around :)

5 out of 5 stars Great book for mercurial times.......2001-03-17

One of the hardest things about being successful on the Internet is keeping up with the pace at which the playing field keeps changing. I found this book to be extremely well-written, and more importantly, presents information in a way that's not dated by the time you've read it. It's good, simple, common-sense advice for what works. Loved the case studies. It's an invaluable resource for entrepreneurs who can benefit from others' experiences.

                          5 out of 5 stars Net Results.2.......2001-02-23

There are many titles that deal with the topic of web marketing. Net Results.2 stands head and shoulders above the rest. It addresses the complexities faced by both novice and experienced marketers and provides solid, understandable advice for achieving success at either level. Great case studies help pull the advice into context and give the reader insight into tried and true methodologies that really work. The real beauty of this book, however, is that it provides AFFORDABLE advice for how to garner online success and build traffic. I believe that many of the now failed dot.com startups would still be around today had they heeded the advice available in Net Results.2.

5 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Marketing a Web Site.......2001-02-09

NetResults.2 is an overview of what is necessary to market a web site. Nine chapters explain things from Investment Goals to Public Relations. Each chapter has pictorial examples of the explanation and a Resource section at the end of each chapter. The book is printed in an easy-to-read font, large enough to make reading a breeze.

The Content section contains seven pages, an appendix of Internet Resources is nine-pages and the index section is seventeen pages long making it user-friendly. On each cover is an extra "turn over" so you can "bookmark" where you stopped reading and as an added incentive, the book cover is plastisized so you can read and drink your coffee without fear of spillage!

                            Book Description

What do you really know about your competitors, and potential competitors? What are the real threats your business faces in the next two years? What do your competitors know about you, how did they find out about it and how can you stop them finding out more? In many ways the challenges and risks faced by modern managers are not that different from those which governments deal with. But, whereas political decision-makers have long relied upon their intelligence agencies to guide, or at least clarify, their thinking with evidence and analysis, most executives have little or no experience with the process or products of intelligence.

Managers for the most part operate in an intelligence vacuum, relying upon their personal networks of information sources and, more dangerously, a wide array of unchallenged assumptions about their companies, their industries, and their markets. Rarely do you meet a manager able to answer the questions: What are your competitors trying to discover about you? And how are they doing it?

This report will equip managers with the necessary frameworks to:
o Develop a clear understanding of the role and value of intelligence in all elements of the strategy process of their organizations
o Initiate the creation or upgrading of in-house intelligence and counterintelligence programmes
                            o Identify key intelligence topics
o Use intelligence 'products' to minimize risk and achieve competitive advantage
o Distinguish between tactical and strategic intelligence, and in turn better appreciate the critical differences between operational effectiveness and strategic positioning
