    Book Description

A Manager's Guide to PR Projects picks up where classic public relations textbooks leave off. It provides hands-on guidance in planning the preliminary research for a public relations project and creating a plan to achieve specific goals, guiding the reader through managing the project's implementation. It contains worksheets that can be used for a visual representation of the planning process for both student edification and presentation to clients.

The book is designed as a user-friendly guide to take the reader through the four-step public relations planning process from a number of vantage points. Intended as a learning tool for use in both the class and beyond, this book's approaches are based on real experiences in the management of communications projects designed to meet organizational goals through achieving public relations objectives.

      Book Description

This book provides an understanding not only of dyslexia but also of the broader population of weaker readers and presents information on how to help them. Understanding Dyslexia and the Reading Process presents dyslexia against a background of normal reading development, and in the context of child development, taking into account multiple factors that affect how well a child overcomes or compensates for dyslexia. Case examples are presented throughout to illustrate specific skill weaknesses. Dyslexia research provides considerable knowledge about how to help all children who do not learn to read on schedule. The final two chapters of the book deal with the history and nature of reading instruction, and how we can improve the teaching of reading in our schools. For anyone interested in reading development.

        Book Description

This fine blend of Harvard scholarship and seasoned judgment is really two books in one. The first develops a sophisticated approach to negotiation for executives, attorneys, diplomats -- indeed, for anyone who bargains or studies its challenges. The second offers a new and compelling vision of the successful manager: as a strong, often subtle negotiator, constantly shaping agreements and informal understandings throughout the complex web of relationships in an organization.

Effective managers must be able to reach good formal accords such as contracts, out-of-court settlements, and joint venture agreements. Yet they also have to negotiate with others on whom they depend for results, resources, and authority. Whether getting fuller support from the marketing department, hammering out next year's budget, or winning the approval for a new line of business, managers must be adept at advantageously working out and modifying understandings, resolving disputes, and finding mutual gains where interests and perceptions conflict. In such situations, The Manager as Negotiator shows how to creatively further the totality of one's interests, including important relationships -- in a way that Richard Walton, Harvard Business School Professor of Organizational Behavior, describes as "sensitive to the nuances of negotiating in organizations" and "relentless and skillful in making systematic sense of the process."

This book differs fundamentally from the recent spate of negotiation handbooks that tend to espouse one of two approaches: the competitive ("Get yours and most of theirs, too") or the cooperative ("Everyone can always win"). Transcending such cynical and naive views, the authors develop a comprehensive approach, based on strategies and tactics for productively managing the tension between the cooperation and competition that are both inherent in bargaining.

Based on the authors' extensive experience with hundreds of cases, and peppered with a number of wide-ranging examples, The Manager as Negotiator will be invaluable to novice and experienced negotiators, public and private managers, academics, and anyone who needs to know the state of the art in this important field.

        5 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking, well-organized guide.......1998-10-13

This book strikes a great balance between negotiation analysis and real-life application, two aspscts which I believe whoever wants to pursue a good commend of negotiation can not do without. I particularly appreciate authors' dedication to provide lively examples to articulate the key points. I highly recommend this book to serious and enthusiastic readers interested in the facinating field of negotiation.

4 out of 5 stars Effective, but tests your patience.......2004-03-11

Essentially, a quality reference book. I'm a remodeler and general contractor in Madison, WI. I've used this book to establish budgetary figures for homes I buy, renovate and flip. Being accurate with this book means being patient and flipping back and forth to find every little detail, but the time pays off - Means brings me in at or just above my actual costs. Couldn't ask for much more, except the layout according to the CSI Master Format doesn't make it easy to find all the right items and numbers. Also, Means doesn't allow for things like the style, height or complexity of the roof when determining cost to install shingles - so just be careful and remember to add in that contingency at the end. And don't forget to add local sales tax, if you have to pay it. (In my opinion, this book is better than Means Residential Repair and Remodel guide - that book gives you less options. However, it is organized they way you might layout a project. It's also easier to get a final number, but you defintely have to up your contingency factor because it's not as accurate.) If you're a remodeler, buy Detailed Residential Costs and use it - it'll save you time and money in the long run.

The 2006 Edition is a worthwhile buy and pays for itself quickly. I wish I had bought it much earlier in my home budgeting process. The information is well organized in a user-friendly manner. It even has cost adjustment factors for hundreds of cities. This should help you to be prepared somewhat before you start negotiating with builders and contractors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you are building your own home.......1999-08-25

This is an excellent book for estimating the costs involved in building a new home. It provides enough detail to get a good idea on costs. It is not as detailed as some of the other books out there but for a person like myself it has proved to be an invaluable tool. And it is easy enough to use as opposed to some of the other books out there.

It Is the most definitive formula available for success in high technology.

5 out of 5 stars Managing High-Technology Programs and Projects.......2003-05-31

Archibald has done it again. This is not your normal "Xth Ed.". It is a significant rewrite of the prior edition and more importantly contains much new material delivered in Archbald's clear, concise, insightful style. This not a book with academic content or one written by a "consultant". It is writtten by a project manager whose been in the trenches with the work (read project) for over 40 years AND still is. The work contains much "true fact" and in addition several adds in areas that previously have not been addressed in ANY publication to my knowledge; an example is the addition of the material on "What an executive/manager can and should expect of his project managers. There are special notes on this subject throughtout the book. NET CONCLUSION: Grizzled or experienced, managing it or doing it or did it - you can't afford to be without it. What Archibald writes of will assuredly happen to you sooner or later; forewarned is forearmed - - - and he provides both!!

This is a great resource for all those interested in improving their project management skills. The author will guide you through entire process from organizing the project to closing it out. This book is a must for anyone involved in managing high-tech projects.

As a project manager, I am always looking for helpful resources to stay ahead of the game. This book is great go-to guide & provides a clear vision on how to manage more complex projects. I'm glad a colleague recommended it.

4 out of 5 stars Readable and informative.......1999-09-09

I have owned several books of antique automobiles, including Packards. This book is about the company itself and what lead it to its precipitous decline after WWII.

It is very readable and informative. It is one thing to read tables of sales and changing positions in the marketplace among brands, which are available in automobile encyclopedias. This book, however, explains WHY things happened. For instance, I did not know that in 1953 Ford decided to be No.1 at any cost. Ford's deep pockets were used to buy market share. GM did the same. This created a serious problem for all the independent producers, none of which were as efficient as GM or Ford.

I liked the book a lot.
