Eastern Philosophy with a Western Interpretation.......2006-09-28

Charles F. Haanel has written a great How-To for mind, body and life. I've studied and read many books on the topics of Yi Quan and Taoism. The Master Keys system provides a great approach to the same topic without the need to understand cultural references or worry the author transalated an idea correctly. Yi Quan and Taoism focus on many simple principles one of them being the training of stillness. Sometimes the authors or interpreters of the Eastern texts conflict with each other when dealing with methods of acquiring skills through stillness. The Master Keys simplifies the process by breaking the book down into weekly training chapters. You master each chapter individually before moving forward. This is brilliantly laid out because your not left asking "what do I do now?". For anybody interested in understanding why the mind is powerful and how to train it, this book is for you. If you've read any Eastern Texts on the subject, this book may open the doors of understanding by providing a western perspective to the same topic. This book is awesome.

Good Research, Even Though It's a Bit Dated.......2005-03-21

The Profit Impacts of Marketing Strategies (PIMS) Study grew out of a quest for general principles of strategy. The study itself began in 1972 and collected data on over 3,000 business units in 450 corporations for periods ranging from two years to over a decade.

Even twenty years after its original publication, there isn't anything quite like it. Because of the way the material is presented, you can analyze different factors operating to see how they might affect your business. You can look at Picking Profitable Markets or the Impact of Market Position on Profitability or Why Quality is the Premier Driver of Profitability and then relate the principles to your own operation.

You can do this by reading the book all the way through from front to back, or by dipping into the chapters that seem to offer you help for a current problem. If you're I doubt about where to start, let me suggest Why Quality is the Premier Driver of Profitability. It's a chapter I ask my clients to read when we're working on strategy.

A lot of the material in this book is timeless. You'll find data and recommendations that are just as valuable today as when the book was published and that will be valuable ten years from now.

There are problems, though. While some of the research findings may be timeless, the book is still a product of its time. You'll find discussions of "Portfolio Planning" methods, which were in vogue at the time the book was written. You'll find the authors using language and reacting to issues that will sound somewhat dated. Nevertheless, the solid truth and research support that exists in this book makes it worth buying.

Dated Analysis.......2000-08-28

In the 70's when the work was first done, articles appeared in Harvard Business Review and the study then was closely associated with Boston Consulting Group. Much has happened since and the book is just a rewrite of the earlier results. I suggest you get the HBR articles, they cover the material well.

No strategist should be without The PIMS Principles in their library. I have used it in numerous consulting engagements and found it to be a source of wisdom that trancends the current management fad-of-the-day. PIMS Principles explains all of the recent fads typical of the corporate boardroom in a logical, empirical way. Topics that every manager and strategist should balance, but don't, include relative market share, relative product quality, relative productivity, and investment intensity. Authors of current books on stragegic planning such as Gary Hammel recognize that PIMS put stragegic planning on the map. Even Tom Peters agrees that the PIMS team has created one of the most powerful knowledge bases ever assembled.

I believe The PIMS Principles outlines in a disciplined way the factors needed for any balanced scorecard effort and in fact could be considered the "first balanced scorecard" which was used at General Electric in the 60's and 70's.

G! ! eneral Electric's success as one of the most diversified and highly successful value creators is and can be attributed to their ability to balance the factors identified in The PIMS Principles.

A must read for anybody really interested in corporate strategy and why fads and simplified approaches rarely work.

This volume contributes to a deeper understanding of the crisis in Central America through an examination of several aspects of the region's historical development. Written by historians, anthropologists, political scientists, and a literary scholar, the essays highlight several themes central to understanding the problems faced in the region today. One is the continual role of major outside forces on development. Nearly all of the essays reflect this presence and suggest a number of distinct effects. A second common theme is the importance of native culture to the region, even though there is considerable diversity among the cultural patterns of the Central American states. Several of the essays reflect the strong class conflicts that developed between entrenched elites dating from the colonial period and the emerging middle and working classes that have begun to find organization and articulation in the twentieth century. Although most of the essays focus on individual states, collectively they reflect one of the strongest themes of Central American history and one of the most important sources of the present conflicts: the failure of the region to reunify into a strong unit following the disruption of the Central American Federation in 1840. These twelve articles suggest the complexity of Central America's historical development and that the present crises are much more than sinmple confrontations between capitalist and communist regimes. Great sales system.......2007-09-14

I am familiar with Solution Selling, Spin Selling and Strategic Selling, and I really like the Sandler system - great for sales where you are selling directly with the decision maker - works well for 5 figure software deals and as a tool on larger deals. I enjoyed this book for the system description, techniques as well as stories about the author. I would have given the book a higher score if these elements weren't all mixed in together. I would have preferred if the system was presented and then followed by the techniques as is the presentation in the Sandler training sessions and President's Club binders. Still, this is a good intro to a great selling system.

I spent 20 years in the retail automobile business (quite successfully, I might add), and am proud of the fact I always kept myself open to new ideas, different opinions, and innovative ways of selling successfully. In all of those years, I never learned ANYTHING close to how David Sandler suggests we should sell. While I was successul, I did not find fulfillment in the car business and moved to a new industry a few years ago, purchasing a national franchise. Purely by chance, the national headquarters had made a committment to the Sandler Selling System as the method they would train and support. It is a complete 180 degree turn in so many ways from what I had learned before. Because of this, it has not been an easy transition for me, but I believe it is such a completely better system of professional sales that I am committed to learning it, making it my habit, and enforcing it as the selling system in my business. I think that anyone in a position that requires them to attempt to show others their way is a better way (by the way - that is everyone in the world in some facet of their life) can benefit from learning this system. It is as equally applicable to the reluctant and uninclined salesperson as it is to the seasoned salesperson who enjoys the idea of "being" a salesperson. It will give you another valuable way to look at human interaction and how you can "do it" more effectively. I would contend that it would be impossible to read this and not gain some benefit from the contents. Then again, if self-improvement isn't that important to you, then this book probably isn't for you, and that's fine too.

I liked this book as getting to what someone REALLY wants and needs rather than the old features and benefits blah blah. Get to the PAIN! We'll do anything to avoid pain and not as much to get those benefits. Get it. Read it. Do it. OR you can keep stuggling... which is better for you?

What i liked most...

Our company will NOT sell a solution to a customer if it is not a good one. We stive for ethics and integrity in all we do. Many sales books challenge your behaviors in ways that make me very unconfortable.

This book reveals a path of sales with respect and attitude. It is clear and does not, nessesarily, warrant a change in integrity.

Yes - the sales guy can have respect!! Read it and find out how!

If you want to polish your sales skills, this book has lots of great advice. Each "lesson" is condensed into a couple pages, so it's an easy read, but still offers lots of good information. The book includes practical examples and stories that do a great job of illustrating how to apply the skills in real-life situations. There is a series of four books and they're all excellent.

Disappointed.......2005-03-18

I was really disappointed in this book. I bought it specifically for the High-Fiber recipes and it fails to tell you how much fiber is in each recipe. It gives fat content,but not fiber content. In the books title it say 150 Nutritious, High-Fiber, Low Fat Recipes, yet doesn't include the fiber content in any of the recipes. I'd like to keep track of my daily fiber intake, but I can't do so using this book. So for my purposes this book is useless.

In reading use comments about Yanni's album "If I Could Tell You" I noticed this author advertised his book. Regardless of the book's merits, I think it should be rejected due to the author being a shallow, inappropriate capitalist.

A Loving Dad Shares His Story.......2003-11-19

Jeff McAndrew tells the story of living with and loving his son Stephen, who happens to have autism. The straight-forward, open approach to a wide variety of topics should be of great help to other families dealing with this condition. I especially appreciated the addition of comments of others - parents and professionals - who also are concerned about children with disabilities. It's important to remember that interventions which are effective for one child with autism may not be at all helpful to another, and vice versa. Finding interventions that work, as well as a strong support network, can make a critical difference in a family's ability to enjoy and appreciate a special child such as Stephen.

Author Shows Vision.......2003-11-15

Jeff's book "Our Brown-Eyed Boy" will stand the test of time. Although it has some minor editing problems, the content has character and vision. This parent's insights will be respected for the honesty and love that underlies the effort. I liked Jeff's poetry and pictures of his son at the end of the book. This added a very nice personal touch. I recommend the book to parents of autistic children and to all parents. I was inspired by his honesty.
