Highly recommended self improvement book.......2004-03-29
Author, Charles Lambert, Ed.D. brings together current research on motivation, personality types, psychology, physics, and the martial arts into a cohesive whole to help the reader change their life. For each part he includes various exercises to illustrate the points and help the reader understand exactly what is happening. This is all organized into five "Modules" for the reader to work through to achieve the desired results.
The first module deals primarily with mental rehearsal and cognitive hygiene. Cognitive hygiene is his term for cleaning up the clutter in the mind related to negative self-talk. Dr. Lambert does a phenomenal job of describing the problem of self-talk and providing a positive, workable method of dealing with it. It is amazing that he can deal with this subject so well in just a couple of chapters when whole books have been written about it and have not done as good a job.
Module two is on focusing and concentration. Again, this is an excellent treatment of the subject and includes several exercises to help you learn better focus and concentration. The author's background in the martial arts shines through strongly here as he blends ancient focus philosophies and modern techniques.
Of the remaining modules, module three covers various ways of applying the skills learned in the prior modules. Module four focuses on using the martial spirit, persistence and motivation to achieve your dreams. This includes a strategy for enjoying your life on a daily basis and keeping yourself motivated over the long term. Module five is a short section basically designed for coaches, managers, and anyone else who needs to motivate others.
"Your Inner Edge!" is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking to change their life, improve their business, improve their self-image, or otherwise improve their life.

Symantec Act! remains one of the most popular personal information managers around. Using Act! 4.0 provides comprehensive reference and tutorial material on this versatile piece of software. They begin by showing you how to get started with Act! in a hurry, explaining how to set up a new user profile, enter data, and access the program's various features. They explain conceptual information, such how a relational database differs from a flat-file database, but only where an understanding of such information enhances the reader's understanding of Act! The book also shows how to enter and retrieve database information, how to import information from other applications, how to make labels for mass mailings, and how to use the Act! word processor and other productivity features. The authors explain how to customize Act! to suit your particular way of working-from customizing Act!'s interface to creating templates for letters, reports, and the other documents you generate with Act! Coverage of Act!'s advanced features helps you get up to speed on synchronizing databases, accessing Web sites, and more. --David WallBook Description

Practical Wisdom from an Experienced Pro.......2002-11-09
Ian, who is so respected by fellow management consultants like myself, shares his wisdom on a myriad of topics important to anyone in a leadership role. The author's insights and advice are based on practical know-how gained from years of relevant experience as a consultant to management and from working as a professional inside organizations.
This book serves as a valuable quick reference for leaders and those who coach them. But my firm recommendation is to read the book from cover to cover and digest what is being said before filing it your reference stack. You don't know what you don't know.
Ian's writing style, humor, examples, and sharing of personal experiences make for an easy and enjoyable read.
It takes more than One Minute to be an effective leader.......2002-10-21
The antithesis of "management flavor du jour," Ian Jacobsen's "Leadership at Your Fingertips" is a handbook every manager can use as a handy reference guide. The author first succinctly describes the emerging organizational ethic of work as a source of meaning, and leadership as "the art of inspiring people to undertake an adventure in the pursuit of a common goal." Like an insightful and caring mentor or coach, he then guides the reader through the process of building or rebuilding an organization and ensuring its short-term health and long-term success.
The book is organized to invite browsing as well as to address specific challenges, with focused guidance on topics such as "Getting Results from a Virtual Team," "Performance Reviews That Help Bring Out the Best in People," "Confronting Lying," and "Working with Someone You Don't Respect." Within an orderly, systematic framework, he advises on topics as diverse as diversity, terminations, becoming an excellent communicator, and maintaining personal focus and balance. Under "Navigating Organizational Politics," he describes eleven "political games," nearly all of which I recognize from my own experience both as an employee and a manager. Numerous checklists and worksheets are included for step-by-step guidance, self-assessment, and team feedback.
Unlike management books that give inspiring but general advice (for example, advocating honest communication), "Leadership at your Fingertips" describes specific practices and language employees and leaders can use to create an effective organization. For example, in the section entitled, "Communicating unwelcome news," Jacobsen outlines a protocol for communicating unwelcome news. Without such explicit agreements, many organizations fall victim to the tendency to shield leaders from bad news. Here's how he sets up the context with his clients:
"'During the course of working with you, there is a chance that I will learn about information that you need to know and that may be upsetting...When I come across such information, what is the best way for me to communicate with you about it?'" But he does not leave the reader to stumble into a bad-news situation. "When I learn of disquieting news, I state: 'You may not like what I have to tell you, however, you need to know about this. Is now a good time?'" (p. 155).
Jacobsen establishes a blueprint for leadership with integrity, both within individual topics as well as in a chapter devoted specifically to building credibility. Although his tone is practical, his approach to every topic conveys respect for the awesome seriousness and responsibility of leading an organization. I would have liked the author to include a reference list (not just an index) with suggestions for additional reading for those seeking greater depth on specific topics.
"Leadership at Your Fingertips" would be an excellent companion to Jim Collins' "From Good to Great," a remarkable research-based analysis of a dozen or so companies whose historic performance literally went from years of mediocrity to a pattern of sustained growth. The first element in this pattern of success was what Collins terms "Level 5 Leadership." In every "Good-to-Great" company, he writes, "Level 5 leaders channel their ego needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company.... they are incredibly ambitious - but their ambition is first and foremost for the institution, not themselves." (p. 21)
The leaders Collins describes are not flamboyant, charismatic types. They are serious, committed, humble individuals who shun the limelight and often decline to take credit for their accomplishments - although they accept responsibility when mistakes are made. Although Collins says he is not sure whether Level 5 Leadership can be learned, Jacobsen's advice is certainly consistent with the portrait of leadership Collins has painted.
If you aspire to Level 5 Leadership, and/or want to build an organization that exemplifies Level 5 Leadership in everyday transactions, consider keeping "Leadership at Your Fingertips" - well, at your fingertips, and available to every manager in your organization.
