Best book I have read on constructivism and standards.......2006-07-24

The authors got it right in the first edition, but this new edition is extraordinary. Marlowe and Page address every important issue in relation to developing constructivist classrooms and give teachers the support they need to believe in themselves.
If you don't read anything else this year, get this book and read chapter 5 on standards and assessment. It cuts through the nonsense of mandates and will leave you saying, "At last, someone put it in writing." See for yourself! It's a must have book that will continue to be the bible for constructivist practice.

I have spent a lot of time looking for a book that I can actually use in my classroom. This is it. It contains checklists that helped me immensely in my attempt to make my classroom more democratic and more focused on active learning. With state standards being implemented in most states, this book is a must read. It clearly shows how constructivism is the foundation for the standards in all of the disciplines.

The best book I've ever seen on the subject for teachers........1998-07-12

This is the only book on constructivism that I have ever seen that is designed for teachers as opposed to academics. While it is clearly scholarly, it is highly practical and contains a wealth of useful, creative, and exciting ideas for teachers to put into practice tomorrow in their own classrooms. Their is a glowing endorsement on the back cover from Alfie Kohn, one with which I wholly agree, who notes that the book presents highly effective and engaging strategies to help students find meaning in their educational experience. The book is filled with self-assessment checklists, strategies for helping parents and administrators understand what constructivist teaching is about, and useful questions at the end of each chapter for helping teachers design their next steps. There are wonderful chapters on technology, dealing with issues surrounding classroom diversity, and helping students make the transition from chalk and talk, drill and kill classrooms to the kinds of learning experiences which will truly be lifelong and meaningful.

This creative book of paper and fabric beads is amazing. Most of the necessary tools and supplies can be found around the house. Ann explains fabric basics - types, colors, textures - for those of us who are fabric-challenged. Technique guidelines are given with examples (paint, embroidery, wire, paper, etc.) and the results are endless. Her range of ideas of what to do with the beads, once made, is incredible.

Working with Tyvek (the material FedEx and USPS Priority envelopes are made) caught my eye right away. How many beads can be made using a yard of fabric? Unbelievable! I love the possibility of making contemporary holiday beads using a lot of cute Christmas pattern squares.

In a few hours I made some fabulous fabric bead toppers for cocktail stir sticks! I love this book :o)

Book is filled with marvelous photographs and some fantastic ideas for easy to do beads. My little girl (7) had fun making beads from scraps of paper, and then stringing them for her "back to school bookmark".

I find it hard to believe all the glowing reviews of this book and can only assume these reviews are written by friends of the author. I needed a good reference for this topic and followed the recommendations and I was extremely disappointed. This is a shallow book that does nothing for the true student of this topic. I believe that the author wants to become a celebrity more than help ordinary people he professes to help. I also wondered if this book is self-published and now can't help but wonder if the author could get a business publisher interested in this work. Does anyone out there know anything about Literary Press? I feel cheated and angry and will be sending the book back.

Learning Means Retention.......2004-11-21

In today's world learning means retention and connecting with the material at a deep and meaningful level; only to creating the right balance leads to enduring "greatness."

I found Eric Schiffer's book to be a starting point for understanding and prioritizing those factors that may contribute to success. What I found most useful from this book were the stimulating ideas that served as the foundation for honest introspection.

Here are some of the questions I asked myself after reading this book:

What are your "Emotionally Charged Techniques?" Why do you spend time on anything but them when you want to pay attention and retain new learning material?

In what areas are you most un-emotionally charged? Do you strictly adhere to the internal systems of your workplace?

If not is this because you do not trust the learning systems, because the systems are too overburdening, because of laziness, because you never really questioned the usefulness of these systems, etc.?

What percentage of time do you give to developing new emotionally charged techniques ? Is this a conscious balance or did it just happen this way? Is this the correct balance?

Are you driven by fear of competition or an intrinsic compulsion to create?

I gave this book 5/5 stars because of its conclusive and enlightening description of the Emotionally Charged Knowledge worker.

One thing really great about this book, aside from its clarity, rigorous methods and good writing style: Eric Schiffer's apparent joy of discovery. When he and his team "kick around" the dimensions of leadership that produce truly great "Emotionally Charged" organizations, you feel as though you are at their table, delighting in the hard-won insights they've discovered.

I'd love to be at that table, unintimidated by mountains of data, sifting through it to determine the core truths about why American business is the exciting thing it is.

As you learn here, there are peculiar combinations of intelligence, forcefulness and even luck that propel businesses to greatness, but clear emotionally charged learning and hard work are crucial ingredients.

My thanks to Eric and his team for making an enormous contribution to the story of American business.

I purchased this book after hearing about this book on the best sellers lists. All I can say is it was so fun to read and plain fascinating. I shared it with my family and have asked our company to try and get Eric Schiffer to speak at Warner Brothers where I have worked for seven years. What an amazingingly obvious yet sophisticated slant on a subject that has been around since Plato first utilized it. I highly recommend this book!

A Brilliant Read.......2004-11-19

I found this book to be extremely useful. Eric Schiffer's view is that the main function of a leader is to manage the nexus between desired skill and learning in ones people. He outlines practical techniques to do this that are simple to implement, and may seem obvious to some, but will result in measurable performance improvement in your business. Your staff will be happier with clear goals and Rewards linked to Performance, communication will improve, and things will get done. Most companies I have seen, be they large or small, have a big gap between what the Board is trying to do strategically and what people actually do day to day. There are many examples of companies whose strategies sounded great but never really happened, resulting in catastrophic loss of value (eg the AOL Time Warner merger) and all because people were unable to learn or take in the training they were given. This is the only management book out of hundreds I have read that tells you how to fill this gap, and make your business achieve its strategic goals through learning. Others here have mentioned Jim Collins. While Built To Last and Good to Great were interesting case studies of successful large companies, they gave me nothing that I could implement immediately in my business. Eric¹s book let me bring world class business practices into my small company.

I was asked to review an early draft of this book. I'm really glad I did! Like many other people, I'm recently retired, need to stay tuned to the stcok market so that I can keep my "nest egg" wisely invested, but would much rather be outside playing golf, tennis, etc. I want to enjoy every minute of of each day, and the last thing I want to do is study and play the stock market! So, I don't, or at least not nearly as much as I should.

This book was exactly what I needed. I learned a lot more about mutual funds than I had expected to learn and it was written so that I could easily understand it. Subsequently, I'm making changes that will simplify and improve my investment strategies and will allow me to play golf without that little voice in the back of my head telling me that instead, I should be sitting at my desk studying the "market"!

If this all sounds familiar and you can relate to what I'm saying, then read it! You'll be glad you did!

Finally a book on mutual funds that I can understand.......2002-10-06

I really don't know much about investing. I even avoided those type of courses in college (majored in the life sciences). But I realize that now that I'm a home-owner and making money I need to do something about my future. I'm not a big fan (at all) of the "For Dummies" series of books, so I wanted something a little more informative but personal. While browsing the books I came across this book and found the layout appealing. With chapter names like "Understanding Mutual Funds: The Nitty-Gritty Details" and "Seduced by the Dark Side" I thought this would hold my attention. Upon browsing the first few pages of some of the chapters I also realized that the author took care to write for a varied audience, which I appreciate since this subject somewhat scares me. All in all: job well done! I have read the book from cover to cover and I even made notes in the margins and bookmarked some of the pages. I'm ready to start investing, and I'm much more confident now! Thanks!!
