Customer Reviews:
Excellent source for upper Midwest business information.......2000-03-27
The Corporate Report Fact Book contains information about a number of publically held, privately held, and non-profit companies in the upper Midwest. It provides detailed information about the companies, and about over six hundred individual business leaders in the region. This book is an excellent resource for would-be employees or investors.
It provides address (both physical and online) for the companies, as well as details about revenue, number of employees, type of business and financial information such as balance sheets for publically held companies. The information is also available online, though in not quite such detail.
The 1999 version is very easy to use, and changes made in the 2000 edition make it even easier. Information is clearly documented (so it's easy to tell what you're looking for and at.) It gives all sorts of detailed stock and financial information for publically-owned companies, and is therefore an excellent resource for investors. The information about kind of industry and other details are great for prospective employers. I can see it alos being very useful to companies or businesspeople wishing to make contacts with companies in a given industry.

Book Description
A major work of history, The Great Tax Wars is the gripping, epic story of six decades of often violent conflict over wealth, power, and fairness that gave America the income tax. It's the story of a tumultuous period of radical change, from Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War through the progressive era under Theodore Roosevelt and ending with Woodrow Wilson and World War I. During these years of upheaval, America was transformed from an agrarian society into a mighty industrial nation, great fortunes were amassed, farmers and workers rebelled, class war was narrowly averted, and America emerged as a global power.
The Great Tax Wars features an extraordinary cast of characters, including the men who built the nation's industries and the politicians and reformers who battled them -- from J. P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie to Lincoln, T.R., Wilson, William Jennings Bryan, and Eugene Debs. From their ferocious battles emerged a more flexible definition of democracy, economic justice, and free enterprise largely framed by a more progressive tax system. In this groundbreaking book, Weisman shows how the ever controversial income tax transformed America and how today's debates about the tax echo those of the past.
Customer Reviews:
Historical, but a little dry. Leaves out some important arguments........2007-09-14
I was hoping for more out of this book based on it's description.
It does go through the history of the Income Tax in the US from it's earliest appearance through it's present form - but it glosses over the actual legality of the tax, the underhanded method by which it (and the Federal Reserve) were thrust upon us, and the larger and very unjust distribution of wealth question.
I feel the author is entirely too accepting of the whole income tax idea and almost writes from a position of "loving" the income tax. He tells the story of its life.
He completely ignores the question of whether the 16th amendment was actually ratified by the states, and how such an amendment, were it actually ratified in the first place, could be accepted as law since it contradicts two very specific Constitutional prohibitions of un-apportioned taxes.
It left me more than a little dissapointed - though I suppose he got the names and dates correct - it's hardly a complete history of the Income Tax in the US.
There are better, more comprehensive, and more lively books on the topic available. Unless you want to read them all, I'd go for another one before this one.
The "Great" Tax "Wars".......2005-07-29
This book was weak. Mr. Weisman's account of the income tax in America is elementary. This book is more a story of the major players then an account of the facts and events. Moreover this book does not tell the complete story (Weisman omits the very ownerous tax levied during WWI on the upper tax brackets). If you are interested in reading a book about economic history in the United States avoid this.
Fantastic economic & political history - Civil War to WWI.......2005-07-23
Steven Weisman has provided us with a history of how the income tax transformed American politics and economics starting with the Civil War and running up through the Woodrow Wilson administration.
Although the history of taxation is not a well known or well loved subject, Weisman does a very good job of integrating the history of income taxes, tarrifs, and corporate taxes with the economic, political, and social history of America.
Weisman starts with the introduction of the income tax during the Civil War, exploring taxation in both the Union and the Confederacy (a topic which I have never seen explored before). As part of his study, he explains why the income tax, although partially successful in paying for the war, should have been expanded further during the conflict to prevent the economic misfortunes that beset the government at the conclusion of the war.
Minimal attention is given to taxation or economic policies during the Grant administration, and Presidents Hayes, Garfield and Arthur are hardly mentioned at all. McKinley & Roosevelt are the topics of the next major section of the book, where Weisman does a great job of explaining how McKinley's programs transitioned into the Progressive income tax reforms introduced by Theodore Roosevelt.
The congressional battles over the tax, along with the involvement of the Supreme Court (in fact, the court invalidated the income tax in 1895), makes the book very interesting reading, as the author gives the reader a comprehensive picture of the relationship between the three branches of government as related to taxation.
Weisman continues to provide a comprehensive picture of taxation up through the first world war and the Wilson administration, with an epilogue that takes us up to the current day.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has the slightest interest in economic, political, or taxation history of America.

Book Description
The Mississippi's major waterfall played an important role in the development of lumbering, flour milling, and hydroelectric power in Minneapolis. The revised edition contains more than 50 photographs and a new epilogue by the author describing the commercial development along the waterfront since the 1960s.
Customer Reviews:
An in-depth history suitable for readers.......2005-09-27
I recently visited (Summer 2005) the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis, which is in the remains of one of the flour mill buildings on the west side of the river. I had no clue about Minneapolis's origins as a milling power (both sawmills and flour mills), since the flour-milling heyday ended in the 1930s, and the last flour milling on the west side occurred in the 1960s, before I was born.
The book covers the the time from the discovery of the falls by Father Hennepin in the 1600s, and looks at the events which led to their development as an industrial powersource that didn't end until the middle 20th century.
It is pretty wordy, but well-written, and a reader will feel rewarded by the in-depth knowledge of the area. There are some pictures and maps, but they are not the meat of the book.
If there's one thing against the book, it is age. It was originally written shortly after the west-side milling operations ended, and at the time was titled _The Waterfall that Built a City: The Falls of St. Anthony in Minneapolis_. This, the revised edition (which I have), was written two decades later, but a lot changed in the area, so that some businesses and buildings referred to in the final chapter no longer exist in their locations. Even the last mill on the west side, the Washburn "A" mill, was mostly destroyed by fire in 1991, after the book was written.
This would be a great book for someone who loves industrial history, urban history, or the Twin Cities area.
A wonderful, indepth account of St. Anthony Falls!.......2003-03-11
This is an extraordinarily detailed account of the St Anthony Falls cataract with all the names of it's founding father's, companies and buildings that rose and fell around the whole area. This is a must have for anyone who is interested in the history of the downtown Minneapolis/Gateway/Falls. Having worked in one of the buildings that was talked about in the book for the better of five years I have come to appreciate the wonderful history of Mill City as it once was. I highly recommend this book, especially given the fact that the brand new Mill City Museum will be opening up in May 2003.

Customer Reviews:
Very good marketing book.......2007-09-22
I found this book in my local library and was pleasantly surprised by all of the great ideas. I read a lot of marketing books, and this one ranks very high on my list because the tips are concise, practical, and there's so much to choose from. Each of the 101 chapters is just a few pages long and at the end there is a list of resources if you need more information. I especially liked the info on writing articles, letters to the editor, and your own column. The chapters on creating or sponsoring awards, contests, or events were also informative.
This book was published in 1999, so a few chapters need an update (i.e. internet marketing). But overall, I highly recommend this book. I will be purchasing a copy for myself and using it for reference in the future.
GREAT BOOK!.......2006-09-30
This is a great book packed with useful information. Easy to do, low-cost and effective techniques will get you to the top. Warning: Success requires action! Just do it!
Quick, Easy and Applicable.......2006-08-12
This book is a quick read packed full of great ideas. While none are unique or amazing in and of thmselves, they really spark your imagination and help you think about your marketing differently. Of course no business is going to be able to use all of the suggestions, smart businesses will figure out ways to use as many as possible. I try to pick this book up at least once a month and read a section. Whatever it says, I try to find a way to use that to promote my business or one of my clients. As far as I am concerned, this is a must read for every business owner!
21 out of 101.......2005-10-22
Most of 101 ways to promote yourself comes off as filler. While all of these are ways to promote yourself, an individual would realistically be able to use 21 of them. The others seem to not apply, or are so obvious and logical. But Pinskey does cover alot of ground and as a reference to trigger some idea or things to thing about, it may still be worth the price.
From 101 to #1 Is The Only Way To Promote Yourself.......2005-05-23
Raleigh Pinskey, makes it nearly impossible for you to fail in promoting yourself using this book unless maybe by chance you apply the following three methods
1.) You accidently put this book in a corner and can't find it.
2.) You close your eyes and can't remember where you put it.
3.) You use this book as a hat rack.
Well I didn't try anyone of the above techniques because I was too busy trying to read this book.
Raleigh is truly a Viz-ability coach who knows her stuff. On page 76 she tells you to "Sponsor A Contest", pg 212 she informs you to use Testimonials, pg 21 put your picture on a business card and promote yourself some more and last but not least she gives you 98 fresh, interesting, exciting other ways to get started on your self promotion mission.
Pinskey provides all the little bitty tid bits necessary for you to move from the rank and file of the average into the upper board rooms of the highly exalted. Pinskey's book roars with detailed steps and a caring that you rarely see in a tell-all-book like 101 Ways To Promote Yourself.

Thousands of Practical Promotional Tips.......2006-06-15
John Kremer is a genius. There, I've said it. His book, "101 Ways to Market Your Books: For Publishers and Authors" provides a treasure chest of 1,000's of practical possibilities of you to get out there with your book.
I found "101 Ways to Market Your Books" so stimulating, I had to put it down, knowing I'd come back to it time and again to dip back in to it. This is a book to skim, study, and take notes on more than one to read straight through.
I heartily recommend it for anyone who has just self-published there own book--and, especially their first one as they are learning the ropes of promotion and distribution.

Book Description
At a practical level, mathematical programming under multiple objectives has emerged as a powerful tool to assist in the process of searching for decisions which best satisfy a multitude of conflicting objectives, and there are a number of distinct methodologies for multicriteria decision-making problems that exist. These methodologies can be categorized in a variety of ways, such as form of model (e.g. linear, non-linear, stochastic), characteristics of the decision space (e.g. finite or infinite), or solution process (e.g. prior specification of preferences or interactive). Scientists from a variety of disciplines (mathematics, economics and psychology) have contributed to the development of the field of Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) (or Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), Multiattribute Decision Making (MADM), Multiobjective Decision Making (MODM), etc.) over the past 30 years, helping to establish MCDM as an important part of management science. MCDM has become a central component of studies in management science, economics and industrial engineering in many universities worldwide. Multicriteria Decision Making: Advances in MCDM Models, Algorithms, Theory and Applications aims to bring together `state-of-the-art' reviews and the most recent advances by leading experts on the fundamental theories, methodologies and applications of MCDM. This is aimed at graduate students and researchers in mathematics, economics, management and engineering, as well as at practicing management scientists who wish to better understand the principles of this new and fast developing field.
