Book Description
The US Dept. of Education, in conjunction with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently unveiled a $50 million effort to expand research on early childhood cognitive development. A key issue identified requiring more information and research was the education and professional development of educators. Along these lines, Doug Greer has prepared a book discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using state-of-the-art science instruction materials.
The book provides important information both to trainers of future teachers, current teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. To trainers there is information on how to motivate, mentor, and instruct in-service teachers to use the best scientifically based teaching strategies and tactics. To in-service teachers, there is information on how to provide individualized instruction in classrooms with multiple learning and behavior problems, school interventions to help prevent vandalism and truancy, and how curricula and instruction can be designed to teach functional repetoirs rather than inert ideas. To policy makers and supervisors, the book discusses how to determine the effectiveness of curricular innitiatives toward meeting mandated standards in national assessments.
Doug Greer was recently awarded the Fred S. Keller Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education by APA for the research and application of the material covered in this book. School programs incorporating the material used in this book have produced 4-7 times more learning outcomes for students than control and baseline educational programs (see www.cabas.com)
The book provides research-based and field-tested procedures for:
* Teaching students of all ability levels ranging from preschool to secondary school
* How to teach special education students in the context of a regular classroom
* Best practices for all teachers to teach more effectively
* Means of monitoring and motivating teachers' practices
* A comprehensive and system-wide science of teachingpost modern-postmodern!
* Tested procedures that result in four to seven times more learning for all
students
* Tested procedures for supervisors to use with teachers that result in
significant student learning
* Tested procedures for providing the highest accountability
* A systems approach for schooling problems that provide solutions rather
than blame
* Parent approved and parent requested educational practices
* Means for psychologists to work with teachers and students to solve
behavior and learning problems
* A comprehensive systems science of schooling
* An advanced and sophisticated science of pedagogy and curriculum design
* Students who are not being served with traditional education can meet or
exceed the performance of their more fortunate peers,
* Supervisors can mentor teachers and therapists to provide state of the
science instruction
* Parent education can create a professional setting for parents, educators,
and therapists to work together in the best interests of the student,
* Teachers and supervisors who measure as they teach produce significantly
better outcomes for students,
* Systemic solutions to instructional and behavioral problems involving
teachers, parents, supervisors provide means to pursue problems to their
solution,
* A science of teaching, as opposed to an art of teaching, can provide an
educational system that treats the students and the parents as the clients.

Designing Teching Strategies.......2007-03-18
SMART! Nicely written and very clear language. Public school systems could learn alot from this book!
Most important text since Cooper, Heron, & Heward.......2006-03-31
This text explains EXACTLY how to make the everyday practice of teaching with ABA work BEYOND the one-to-one home program for a single student. It is the most comprehensive extension of "what to do and how to do it" since Cooper, Heron, & Heward's "Applied Behavior Analysis."
What Dr. Greer dubs the "ABA Systems Approach" springs from the university informing comprehensive application of behavior analsyis to schooling settings (CABAS schools). However, the text can also stand indepenent of that special environment; and its contents are immediately applicable to individual practitioners in home and community settings.
Chapters summarize advances in practice and current research in verbal behavior; creating literacy and mathematics curricula for students who need ABA methodology to learn; and how to supervise other professionals in advancing their ABA and research skills.
Especially useful are tables that translate students' performance trouble into potential repertoires that may not be fully taught or reinforcement contingencies that may be lacking; and team actions that would remedy those problems.

Customer Reviews:
This book is useless.......2005-06-21
It is badly written and has no central theme.
Plus at $14 for a little paper pamphlet that is 18 pages long?
I sent mine back for a refund - How do they get away with this incompetent writting?
Neat booklet focuses on ends aspect of mission statements.......2000-06-11
John Carver is well known for his PolicyGovernance formulation of the role of non-profit boards. Under this, boards formulate four types of policies: ends, executive limitations, board-staff linkage and the governance process. Carver sees mission statement as the top level ends policy. Not everyone would completely agree: many mission statements go well beyond this, to include some discussion of means, corporate values and so on. That said, ends are invariably a key element of mission statements.Subject to this possible limitation, this booklet is short and to the point, and includes a helpful checklist of characteristics of good mission statements, which is useful to any organisation embarking on a mission statement exercise.

Debriefing economic theories.......2005-03-09
Histories of economics are generally crippled by one or another ideological vice, or else misunderstandings of the development of theory, almost an arcane pursuit. This comprehensive history of economic thought gives a critical look at the mainline, the development from Smith to the the marginalists, with everything else draped around that, and the result is refreshingly clear, though charges of bias are inevitable. One problem is that economic theory is beset with cleverly complicated fictions, and those who believe them become confused experts. The slightly distanced perspective here is usefully insightful, taken as a broad canvas.
Pseduo-science.......2003-01-11
If ever the science of economics was raised from it's dismal beginnings by powerful prose and concise critics, this book surely does not add to effort. Rather, Hunt drivels on for pages about Marx's moral and philosophical complaints, while Smith, the founder of economics receives hardly a nod. This book attempts to critique by ignoring the best arguments of it's subject, then proceeds to propogandize the reader with no mention of competing views. The author's floundering is less critical and helpful in the history of economics and more a manifesto of philosophical tunnel vision.
Should the author choose to honestly revise this book, it's benefit to students and the economic field will be found in a deep and penetrating treatment of an entire history. Critical views and competing views of each figure and doctrine would abound on its pages.
As it stands now, it's a mixed attempt at a call for revolution, a philosophical manifesto, and most deceivingly, a sorry excuse for a so called "critical" history.
Strong on Some Points - But an Unfair Treatment Overall.......2002-12-23
This book is subtitled "A Critical Perspective"; I think "A Biased Perspective" would have been much more fitting.
Mr. Hunt, a leading theorist on Marxian economics, has compiled a survey of the greatest economic thinkers since Adam Smith. He digs into this rich history with a sharp realism, seeking to explain the motivations behind today's neoclassical tradition. At many points he is insightful. But ultimately, he fails to consider his own motivations in writing the book. The result is a very one-sided analysis of a dynamic subject, which leaves the reader with a bitter aftertaste in the mouth.
The primary methodology Hunt employs is Critical Realism. He seeks to debunk the theories of those in the neoclassical tradition by attacking them personally. It does not make for a very convincing analysis. First of all, Hunt is very uneven in where he applies his scalpel. Writers such as Bastait, Malthus, Riccardo, and J.B. Clark are supposedly "discredited" by their class sympathies, writers in the Marxian tradition (and Marx in particular) are incredulously excused.
When Hunt does engage his opponent on a theoretical level, he is much less than fair. He tends to set up hollow straw-men as his targets, strike them with an obtuse and unwieldy club, and declare himself the victor. The subtleties and complexities a serious theoretician enjoys are nowhere to be found in Hunt's "critical" analysis.
To point out these problems is not to say that Hunt's book is of no value. It absolutely is. In the places where Hunt shines, he does an excellent job - offering broad and historical perspectives on why economics is the way it is today, and how it could be different. The reader is bound to walk away with a much more critical and thoughtful perspective of modern capitalism.
Nonetheless, this does not excuse the serious problems of bias this book contains. A person interested the subject would do better to search out a more objective introduction and then to return to Hunt's book for a taste of the radicals' perspective. I give this book three stars due to its mix of the good and the bad.
The Truth is out about Neoclassical Economics, its bunk........2000-02-21
E.K. Hunt's book provided an excellent as well as indepth portrayal of the development of economic thought. The book explains in throrough detail the various points of origin for economic theory and the two roads that have been taken most prevalently since the time of Adam Smith. The strength of the book lies in its analysis of modern mainstream theory and the documentation of its shortcomings. E.K. Hunt exposes the weaknesses of mainstream economics while at the same time offering an explanation for its continued study in the face of its theoretical inaccuracies. Mainstream economics carries on because it is on ideological friendly terms with the existing economic system. Regardless of the flaws in mainstream theory, and in capitalism in general, the continued reproduction of the economic system relies on the ability of those "scientists," whose responsibility it is to study the system, to provide a theoretical framework consistent with the reigning system. Without a scientific basis for its defense, the economic system and the economic elites benefitting from the system would have a hard time defending the results of a much less than perfect market economy. In the future I suggest reviewers of this book take the time to closely analyze the functioning of the capitalist economy before writing a review based solely on a seminar class. However, for many I suppose ignorance is bliss. Thank goodness E.K. Hunt doesn't view the world from the perspective of one's head in sand.
The Radical Economist as a Punchline.......1999-06-04
If you've ever wondered why Radical Economics has become a laughingstock, this book is the place to start. Wild-eyed exploitation theories combine with convoluted and contradictory explanations of economic phenomena. The author wastes his time and yours lambasting everyone from Carl Menger to Paul Samuelson. Conveniently enough, the repressive slave states of the Soviet Union and the PRC are exempted from the same type of withering contempt reserved for modern capitalist systems. Mass murderer VI Lenin, who butchered more people than Hitler, is held forth as an outstanding intellectual and economist (he was neither). The point of no return in the book is reached when Piero Sraffa's 1966 work on the production of commodities is trotted out as the definitive and devastating proof that capitalism is a sham. Sraffa's feeble attempt at rescuing the labor theory of value from extinction is treated by the author as holy writ. Sraffa constructed a highly simplistic model of economic production in which minor details such as risk, rates of return, depreciation, incentives, etc. cease to exist. The author establishes a straw man ("neoclassical economists claim that factor inputs are rewarded based on their marginal contributions"), and then trots out Sraffa to refute this obviously simplistic claim. How trite. I was forced to read this work as part of a Senior Seminar in 1987, and it has provided great amusement value. BTW, you'll love the author's obsession with the word "devastating" and his need to emphasize Really Important Points by placing every other sentence in italics.
Customer Reviews:
wonderful history, wonderful historian.......2003-04-17
The book is very interesting. Mr. Galbraith reports that history of Economics was very different in U.S.A. because of unexplored frontiers and free land. Also he says that Welfare economics doesnot become irrelevant due to the policy of free trade and balanced budgets. He also reports that competition in industries is a rare occurence due to their tendency of concentration. He has due regard for economists like Milton Friedman although he is evidently admirer of Keynes. Being witness of economic history for three quarters of the twentieth century his observations carry the merit of truth and wisdom. A very interesting book indeed.
An amusing history of economic thought.......2002-02-07
Galbraith presents an amusing, insightful and slightly opinionated view of the history of economic thought. Conservatives may dislike his occasional goring of their sacred cows, such as Adam Smith and Milton Friedman. Particularly Smith, one of the most commonly cited experts by those who have never read his works and have only a limited perspective on economics. Several quotes from the writings of Adam Smith are used to illustrate that he was no believer in the kind of free market economics touted as his legacy. Liberals are likely to enjoy the mild but entertaining debunking of these prophets of the religion of laissez faire economics. Aside from the asides, the book is an even-handed overview of the foundations of modern economics. It provides learned insight into the major figures of economics and a few minor ones. A clear perspective on the theoretical and often shaky underpinnings of the sometimes dogmatically supported theories underlying economics is presented in historic context.
I read this book immediately after reading Robert Heilbroner's "The Worldly Philosophers", generally considered to be the classic of this genre. The Heilbroner work provides more historic but less philosophic context for the theories of the primary figures in economics. Overall, the Galbraith book is more thoroughly researched and thought provoking.
A Devout Fan.......2000-06-05
I have been a fan of Mr. Galbraith's work for over 12 years. I stumbled across his work when I was completing a paper that had more to do with a social topic rather than economics. I find Mr. Galbraith to be both the devil's advocate, the objective ear, and the voice of clarified reason all at once. I like the historic approach he takes in this perspective. Without history and the scaffolding of information, it makes it difficult for one to understand the newness of individual economic fads. Each generation tends to think everything as we know it has always been this way. It is important to understand how human growth and ingenuity helps to shape and reshape all ideas, and I like his attention to the intangible of 'ethics'.
Galbraith's ideas are old - he touts Japan's economy - ha!.......1997-10-11
Economists like Galbraith are laughable. Their economic ideas are nothing more than fads, unlike Adam Smith's classical economic philosophy - a model that seems to gain more credence as the years pass, not less. Near the end of the book Galbraith touts Japan's economy as one the U.S. should more closely emulate. I doubt he would write so foolishly had he penned this book more recently. As a history of economic thought, this book was merely adequate.

Book Description
One day, a clever marketer seizes upon a brilliant solution to get consumers to buy his product, even though it is lethal. Through his research, he has learned that many people in his target market are fascinated by the American cowboy. He proceeds to put the cowboy front and center and make the product an essential but secondary part of that cowboy's appearance. It works, but what is it? Why did it work? How can it work for you? What the clever marketer did is called Dreamweaving. It works because people are dreamers. People are looking for things that satisfy their needs beyond food, water, and shelter. People want security and safety, a sense of belonging, and to be their very best. They are willing to pay for what they feel accomplishes these things for them. What this means for your business is that you need to be your customers' dreams. To gain market leadership, your products need to satisfy needs beyond basic necessities. Your products need to be part of their lives. Whether you are an entrepreneur, a widget maker, a marketer, or an individual looking for a new job, this is the book that explains how you can become a Dreamweaver. Simple and effective, Dreamweaving can help you get to know your customers, reach new ones, demonstrate the impact of your products on their lives, gain and keep people coming back for years to come, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Dreamweaving Success.......2005-10-26
Wow! Dreamweaving is a very easy, quick read packed with great sales & marketing tips. I've been in radio sales for a long time, and picked up a lot of new, useful information. I then passed the book on to not just my sales staff, but to my on-air, and promotional staff. After reading the book, we feel we will be able to take care of our advertisers a lot better by addressing their needs & helping with their creative message. It also made us look at how we market our radio station. We did make some sales too, and I'm sure we'll make many more!
Marketing at its best!.......2004-03-24
The concept of dreamweaving has changed the way I think about the marketing I do. As a bank mareting director for a community bank in Alabama, I have found this to be the best and most valuable thing I do in any day of the week, month, year. Any marketing expert would agree that ANY advertising results are often difficult track directly back to the specific expense. But after embracing (which is truly what you must do to make it work)dreamweaving in Spring 2001, our community bank has grown tremendously with 2003 being one of the best years we have ever had. The promises the book makes are not "hype". They are happening at our bank! Employees that are involved love it. Non-profit organizations have stopped asking for money and started asking for radio time! REALLY! I'm not kidding! Our advertising budget has not increased. In fact, the first full year that we began dreamweaving, we spent 25% less than budgeted. The budget has not increased, though two new branches have been built and marketed since dreamweaving began. If you are to embrace dreamweaving, you will get immediate feedback, no doubt. However, you must go the long-term with it. Many radio stations asked us at first, "Well, how long are you going to do this campaign?" The answer: It's indefinite. It will not end. We will ALWAYS do it.
A wonderful read.......2004-01-14
I manage two radio stations and recommend Dreamweaving to every marketing consultant. This easy to read book makes sense! The content reviews the basic principles of marketing and is a simple guide to your success. You must read it!
Inspiring and practical.......2003-08-17
Every hour of every day we consumers suffer a barrage of advertising, each shouting "bigger, better, new, improved." Our eyes and ears are so afflicted by claims and counterclaims that we soon learn to filter out the noise.
How then, can the creator or vendor of a product of service hope to gain the attention of potential customers and turn that attention into sales?
"To millions of talented businesspeople," says marketing consultant Michael Chandler in DREAMWEAVING: The Secret to Overwhelming Your Business Competition, "SALES is a four-letter word."
What he means, is that just because someone has a talent for business doesn't make them equally skilled in selling their product or service no matter how convinced they are theirs is the best thing since cable TV. The very thought of facing a reluctant consumer and convincing them they should spend their hard-earned cash on THIS instead of THAT gives them heartburn.
Fortunately, says Mr. Chandler, the most successful sales campaigns aren't. They don't sell anything. Rather, they focus on what the customer needs and wants and simply alerts them that the very thing they're looking for is RIGHT HERE. This is the fine craft of Dreamweaving.
"Dreamweavers don't think in or out of boxes," he explains. "Dreamweavers think in circles . . .Dreamweavers understand how people feel, how they think, and what makes them tick. They know what makes people excited and what bores them to tears."
And how to these amazing folks know all of this? Quite simple. They don't talk, they listen. In this era saturated with mass advertising, they don't try to out-shout the competition. Instead, they seek out the needs of their prospective customers and fulfill them. Successful marketing, he advises, is solely a matter of how the customer perceives the product. So, the wise marketer focuses on determining which images and ideas will allow his or her potential customers to personally relate to the product.
"Listen to what your customers want. Then give it to them," Mr. Chandler says.
Does it work? So far, if the examples Mr. Chandler provides are any indication. And we're talking banks, where the difference between one and the next is negligible at best when it comes to services. He has consulted with several banks that have seen their assets and customer base skyrocket simply because they have offered their paid radio advertising time to promote public events and fundraisers. Why? Because the residents of the communities they serve stop thinking of them as "the bank" and start considering them neighbors, friends, people who'll come through when they're needed.
Written in a pleasant, ironic style that entertains as well as educates, DREAMWEAVING offers advice that can be used by businesses no matter how small or large. The principles Mr. Chandler relates are also egalitarian in that they can be adapted to just about any kind of business you'd care to mention, and his focus on customer relations rather than hard sell is refreshing in itself. He honestly admits many are put off by what they consider the "touchy-feely" aspects of his premise, but that doesn't faze him a bit. The important thing is, it works.
It's a Strategic Asset!.......2003-05-29
I recently accepted a marketing position at a community bank and one of the first books my boss asked me to read was this one - Dreamweaving. This has been one of the most eye opening marketing/communication stratagies that I have seen or heard of in a long time! It makes sense, is simple, and can be the most strategic asset for your bank or business. Dreamweaving builds an emotional bridge between your business and the community. It allows you to focus on the relationship with people first, and then the product. I think that we have placed too much emphasis on the product and that banking/business marketing is the 'same old thing!' Everyone already knows that your bank has checking accounts and CD's - why bother telling them? Invest your time (and money) into relationships. This book is a MUST for anyone and everyone who has a business and wants it to genuinely stand out from the rest - we're talking Top of Mind Awareness!

Book Description
In all walks of life, at some point in time, we all use the process of problem solving. We all talk about it, we all use it, but chances are we all mean different things by it. Six Sigma and Beyond: Problem Solving and Basic Mathematics organizes the topic and provides a structured approach based on the scientific method. Specifically designed to address the issue of cognitive functioning this volume provides a generic approach to problem solving. The Six Sigma methodology demands that problems be resolved in such a way that both the customer and organization benefit. Not a bad expectation. In this book, the author addresses what a problem is and systematically defines the process of resolving it. He stresses the importance of the team - people power - dedicated to solving a specific problem - process power - and how this combination leads to efficiencies that please the customer and enhance the bottom line. Identifying the problem is only half the task. The next step is to resolve it. This book gives you a detailed rationale and a theoretical explanation of the problem solving process. It focuses on problem solving from a quality perspective and addresses key concepts in team dynamics. It provides an overview of the basic tools of problem solving. In addition, the author introduces the Global Problem Solving (GPS) process. This strategic program brings the focus of quality programs back to eliminating mistakes, waste, and rework. The book highlights the basic mathematics used in all phases of quality control. It introduces each mathematical concept, gives an example, and proceeds with several exercises that demonstrate the solution. With Six Sigma and Beyond: Problem Solving and Basic Mathematics you get the techniques and statistical tools to go beyond theory to real-world applications and take quality management to the next level.
