    Book Description

Public concern over sharp increases in undergraduate tuition has led many to question why colleges and universities cannot behave more like businesses and cut their costs to hold tuition down. Ronald G. Ehrenberg and his coauthors assert that understanding how academic institutions are governed provides part of the answer.

Factors that influence the governance of academic institutions include how states regulate higher education and govern their public institutions; the size and method of selection of boards of trustees; the roles of trustees, administrators, and faculty in shared governance at campuses; how universities are organized for fiscal and academic purposes; the presence or absence of collective bargaining for faculty, staff, and graduate student assistants; pressures from government regulations, donors, insurance carriers, athletic conferences, and accreditation agencies; and competition from for-profit providers.

Governing Academia, which covers all these aspects of governance, is enlightening and accessible for anyone interested in higher education. The authors are leading academic administrators and scholars from a wide range of fields including economics, education, law, political science, and public policy.

4 out of 5 stars Governing Academia From Many Perspectives.......2005-12-25

Ehrenberg has assembled an array of writers to describe and prescribe what they believe to be the saving grace of higher education.

I found the book most helpful doing research on shared faculty governance and the influence of the for-profit sector of academia. However, it would also benefit those working on projects related to senior and mid-level academic administration, including collective bargaining.

Supporting data was sufficient but slightly outdated in some of the chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Business Novel!.......2006-08-14

I have met Ross and read his book, both are wonderful. The book is written as business novel, perhaps the greatest of all teaching formats. In his book you will learn the principles of successful negotiating using the PRAM model. However this book is not meant to be read, but to practiced.

1 out of 5 stars Things We All Should Consciously Undrestand.......2005-07-03

All the things we all should have always known about the other side of a negotiation but never did.
These ideas will ease your whole attitude in negotiating and will make it a pleasant and much more rewarding experince.

4 out of 5 stars Excellant principles for forming win-win relationships.......2001-01-16

This is a very good book explaining the basic principles of negotiation to reach agreements that result in gain for both the parties involved. In the modern world, relationships are becoming brittle and it is increasingly difficult in the world of business to reach a good agreement that lasts long. This book explains why to focus on the wholistic picture where we negotiate not only for what we need but try to see that it results in a benefit for the other party involved. To achieve such agreements, we need win-win thinking, knowing the people with whom we are negotiating, creating long lasting relationships and maintaining the relationships. These principles are explained in a simple and very convincing language in this book. Written as a very simple parable style, this book is a must for all those involved in the process of negotiation in their daily conduct of life. For those who want to learn the basic principles of negotiation for their future, this book offers excellant treasure in very simple language

              Book Description

With all its hopes of a more just and materially prosperous world, development has fascinated societies in both North and South. Looking at this collective fancy in retrospect, Gilbert Rist shows the underlying similarities of its various theories and strategies, and their shared inability to transform the world. He argues persuasively that development has always been a kind of collective delusion which in reality has simply promoted a widening of market relations despite the good intentions of its advocates.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A concise and penetrating history of "development" practice.......2007-09-04

Rist's clear-eyed history of the development enterprise as practiced by the West is a graduate-level dose of reality about a field that chronically underperforms in relation to its goals. Rist isn't pessimistic, but simply realistic about the failures of the standard development models. Development as Truman and others envisioned it was a noble enough enterprise, but clearly it hasn't worked, even in its own terms. This is not so say, however, that it hasn't had major impacts on rich and poor alike. Rist teases out the implications of development (or should we say, "development"?) as practiced and suggests that a complete rethinking is in order to reach anything like the goals developers say they want to achieve. The writing style is a bit windy (primarily because the book is translated from an apparently rather poetic original) but clear enough if the reader is patient. Any advocate of "straightforward," "standard" development in the South would benefit from a few hours working through the arguments here before taking on another "development" project.

4 out of 5 stars Good for "Beginners".......2000-04-23

This book was chosen as a required reading for a course I took about Globalization and Development. Having no prior knowledge about this topic, I felt that the Rist book provided a good introduction to the topic for "beginners". However, the tone tends to offer a pessimistic view of the situations presented.

                  Book Description

"The book makes an interesting and substantive contribution to the field of advertising directly, and also to the entire field of marketing communications or promotion. John Philip Jones presents a new and informed perspective that supports and underpins the need for advertising that works rather than emotive rhetoric that obscures its purpose and function."

--Philip J. Kitchen, University of Hull, U.K.

"This is a much needed text that puts misinformation to rest with strong evidence to disprove it. Most texts simply show how ads are developed, media plans are implemented, and lots of beautiful advertisements. This book shows how advertising can be and should be effective."

--Jan S. Slater, Ph.D., Ohio University

The workings of advertising have always remained a bit of a mystery; until about 1960 virtually nothing of the effectiveness of advertising was known. There was even some doubt about whether advertising worked at all. In the absence of facts, theories were developed up to fill the vacuum. These were soon developed into doctrines, which became widely followed—fables that became fashions. Not many of these theories were ever subjected to harsh scrutiny based on factual knowledge, mainly because there was not much factual knowledge available until recently.
John Philip Jones, bestselling author and internationally known advertising scholar, has written a textbook to help evaluate these advertising “fables” and “fashions,” and also to study the facts. He uses the patterns and trends revealed by the accumulations of data from cutting-edge research to illustrate the occasional incompleteness, inadequacy, and in some cases total wrongheadedness of these fables and fashions. Each chapter then attempts to describe one aspect of how advertising really works.

Unlike most other advertising textbooks, Fables, Fashions, and Facts About Advertising is not written as a “how to” text, or as a vehicle for war stories, or as a sales pitch. Instead, it is a book that concentrates solely on describing how advertising works. Written to be accessible to the general public with little or no experience studying advertising, it makes the scholarship of an internationally renowned figure accessible to students taking beginning advertising courses.

Fables, Fashions, and Facts About Advertising is ideal as a core or supplemental text for courses in marketing, communication, journalism, and related disciplines. This volume should also be useful to the tens-of-thousands of business people whose careers are directly or indirectly concerned with advertising.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The leading thinker.......2003-12-30

There are very few books in the field of communications that bridge the gap between marketing theory and the realities of creative development. This is one of the few, and it is John Philip Jones' best book yet.

The author has the advantage of having worked in the industry, on both sides of the Atlantic, plus he has the inclinations of an academic so he digs deeply into the theory of consumer behavior and markets. He challenges much of the established dogma of the industry and does so concisely and convincingly.

I have a couple of niggles. One is that the author sees advertising as being the way to build a brand image whereas promotions is synonymous with discounting, which of course erodes brand value. This is a simplistic perspective that was advanced by ad agencies in the 1970s and 80s. Promotions if well-conceived are invaluable at generating trial and can build brand image. (Early marketers like Claude Hopkins never recognized a distinction between advertising and promotion).

The second niggle is with the discussion of creative research. This subject is a minefield because most testing of creative is done clumsily. The testing methodology that Jones claims to work needs to be explained more completely and the evidence for it being effective should be laid out.

Jones is a leading thinker in the field and this book is his best - so if you want to make your advertising work harder - you should get it.

4 out of 5 stars A Primer on Preparing Your Book for Publication.......2006-01-31

This book will show you the basics of publishing, with an emphasis on how to produce the final product. Whether you are self-publishing, or need to communicate intelligently with your publisher, this book will be of great use.

Its strengths are in explaining the editorial, production and design process. It is less strong in explaining marketing. It contains a glossary which is very good, and directions which will help you continue to educate yourself.

The Romans had an expression ----ultum in parvo---much in little.
Hemmerly's slim volume fits that description. A publishing pro first and self-publisher second, she has assembled much useful
information---some of it unique---in {\it Unlocking the Secrets of Publishing}. Topics covered include book packagers, (she is one), forming a publishing company, prepress, printing and binding, CIP etc., BISAC codes, bound galleys, press kits and dealing with reviewers. The appendices are helpful without being overwhelming in length, and include coverage of professional contacts, early reviewers, media contacts in some major markets, and finally a useful glossary that is heavy on printing technology terms.

The book itself is a good advertisement for her work, unlike some
others we have reviewed. And by its utility we are reminded of another compact but extremely useful book, David Li's All by Yourself Self-Publishing which after seven years in print remains one of the truly valuable contributions to the self-publishers bookshelf.

In short Hemmerly has assembled the necessary facts in sufficient
detail without wasting much paper, ink or reader's time. The more we browse in it the higher it ranks on our personal publishing bookshelf.

                          5 out of 5 stars Secrets Revealed.......2002-08-21

This is a good basic introduction to the exciting world of self-publishing. The author covers forming your publishing company, copyright, prepress, printing and selling. Since she worked in the production department of a large commercial printer, her advice on printing is particularly good.

Sylvia serves as an officer in both writing and publishing organizations and she is a consultant to the publishing industry. She generously shares her experience and wisdom.

The 38 pages of resources and the glossary of terms alone are worth the price of the book.

As a publisher, author of 28 Books, 109 revised editions, six translations and over 500 magazine articles as well as a consultant to the book publishing industry, I recommend this book to both authors and publishers....

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide, an excellent gift!.......2002-03-04

For any writer considering publishing independently, Sylvia Hemmerly's Unlocking the Secrets of Publishing is not only a simplified guide to independent publishing; it is a friendly introduction to the process.

Books that describe an industry often seem to be written in a secret code that frightens newcomers away, but Sylvia Hemmerly's book invites you in and introduces you to the world of self-publishing in an encouraging way. Her information is well organized and attractively presented. This book is filled with solid basic information and helpful hints.

If you are ready to take the leap and get your work into print, this should be your first guide. If you have a friend or family member who is an aspiring author, this book would be a perfect gift!

5 out of 5 stars Will save money, time, and aggravation.......2002-02-12

In Unlocking The Secrets Of Publishing: Simplified Guide To Independent Publishing, author Sylvia Hemmerly offers the novice writer an informative tour of the complicated world of publishing and along the way explains clearly and definitively how to form a publishing company, as well as how to produce an attractive, marketable book. Hemmerly explains the critical importance of editing, cover and interior designs, how to work with designers, printing and binding, adjusting page counts for pricing purposes, and binding methods. A vitally important section is devoted to reviews -- how to get them and what to do with them once you have them. Indeed what Hemmerly has to say about book promotion, publicity and marketing will prove indispensable for any aspiring small press publisher or self-published author seeking to operate at a profit. Enhanced with appendices of publishing resource contact information, including reviewers and media, it is an invaluable addition to any "how to" reference collection on publishing in today's competitive and rapidly evolving marketplace, Unlocking The Secrets Of Publishing will save money, time, and aggravation for those new to the small press publishing field.

Has good sounding recipes. Anxious to try the creme fraiche recipe. However, when I went to the index just to look for scones, I found that scones were mixed in with all the other recipes, and you need to know the name of the one you're looking for. A list of all the scones in one place would be much more convenient. Do intend to try some of the recipes.

I found this book in a library many years ago. After trying several recipes, I decided I needed to own it. Every single recipe was fast and easy (especially if done in a food processor) and made me look like a domestic goddess! At least three of my friends have bought this book as a result of the scones I've made for them. I also like the book of Pancakes and Waffles by Elizabeth Alston. If she ever writes a book entirely on small meals for two, I'll be first in line with cash in hand!

5 out of 5 stars Easy, perfect scones and shortcakes.......2000-10-17

After tasting yummy scones with creme fraiche and berry preserves at a high tea in London, I borrowed this book from a friend and tried several recipes. Breakfast Berry Shortcakes (p. 18) are the best ones I've very eaten, although sinfully laden with butter. And I've never before found a recipe for creme fraiche (p. 19), so much more delicious on scones than plain whipped cream. The raisin scones and simple sweet scones lived up to the ones I ate in Britain. There are complete directions and discussions with each recipe.

                            Book Description

A controversial, irreverent, and often amusing guide to the art and science of technical analysis

Taking a non-biased, scientific approach to the subject, Dr. Jay Tadion exposes many of the most cherished myths and preconceptions in the field of technical analysis. And in their place he offers a refreshingly original and empirical approach to this increasingly popular area of finance.

JAY TADION, PhD, (Pully-Lausanne, Switzerland) formed his own company, Research and Industrial Instruments Company, while still studying at Kings College. Spurring the company into a world leader, Tadion has taken an active role in managing his own investments and shares his insights as a consultant to major banks and currency funds.

All that I got out of reading this book is the idea that the author is a smart, successful person. I haven't the slightest clue as to how anything contained in the book can be used in my (or anybody else's) trading. Also, it is much less than an entertaining read. Avoid like the flu - unless you are a masochist, or have trouble sleeping!
