4 out of 5 stars Responsive Author.......2000-04-28

Huff's little guide is a bit dated, but the booklet has some good sources and ideas for persons wishing to start a home business. I like it that the author is willing to give me new information and answer business questions when I e-mailed her at CLBestHBB@ivillage.com. She cares for her readers.

1 out of 5 stars Directory of Home-Based Business Resources.......2000-04-05

The book consists of 34 pages of generic information; nothing specific here. For example, the author lists a few books about setting up and running a home business. You can get a more complete list of books on Amazon.com and you actually get a summary of what the book is about. Instead of purchasing this book, open the yellow and white pages of your phone book for trade, professional and governmental organizations, and go to the library and ask the librarian about information regarding the type of business you are interested in. Also included in the book is a very short list of small business software programs which we have all heard of. The software is listed along with the company's phone number and that is it. For information regarding the software, the author tells you to call or write the company. Why didn't the author just tell you to go to the computer store and ask for advice or maybe read another book? The first recommendation the author makes on how to choose the best computer for your business is to contact a computer consultant by "looking in your local telephone directory's Yellow Pages." I am not making this stuff up. Per the author, for a list of comunication specialists, "check your local Yellow Pages business direcory." Don't waste your money on this small book of information resources you already knew about. I think we all have already heard of the Yellow Pages, the White Pages and the library.

    5 out of 5 stars A REFRESHING VIEW.......2000-11-03

After reading several "pro-active" books on online business, it is refreshing to finally find a book that doesn't paint a too rosy a picture of the future of online commerce. The message of this book is: you can make an income from the Internet - supplemental income, at least - but will probably not become a millionaire. The Internet is not here to drive existing businesses out of business, and hence can't claim to take their share of the market and give it to Internet entrepreneurs. It is a very informative book that, as other readers have mentioned, gets your creative juices flowing. The graphic layout of the book leaves something to be desired, however, and some of the URLs are outdated.

    1 out of 5 stars Birdcage material.......2000-07-19

This author is one of those get-rich quick schemers who is using the profits from this load of hogwash to finance his soon-to-be-released informercial making the same bogus claims. Everyone knows there is money to be made on the Net; what we don't know (and subsequently desire to know) is HOW. This book offers a bunch of lame ideas that any dim-witted fool could come up with while reading through the classified section of an income opportunity type magazine. Get real. There appears to be absolutely no original thought work put into this book. Do yourself a favor...if you really want to MAKE money...don't throw it away on this fodder for birdcage bottoms.

4 out of 5 stars Only those who dare truly live.......2000-02-25

This is a great book for those who have no idea of how the Internet works. This book explains the online business world in plain English -- especially good for beginners and foreigners (e.g. Russians). This is a book of business. And if you want to learn about PCs, operating systems and Inernet you'll need additional literature.

Folks, we are living now in a global village with a common marketplace. But this book is too overoptimistic if you really beleive to squeeze some money out of the Internet and get rich soon. But try! And then try again. Only those who dare truly live.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and stimulating.......1999-12-16

This book offers much needed information to the Internet rookie. It is good for those who have no idea how to go about making a living out of the Internet, but if you have some experience in e-commerce/Internet business you should get a book that looks into the matter with greater detail. Ironically, one such book is the author's own "1 BUSINESS 2 APPROACHES (HOW TO SUCCEED IN INTERNET BUSINESS BY EMPLOYING REAL WORLD STRATEGIES)" which I also read and consider a much better book. I suspect that the first part of "121 INTERNET BUSINESSES YOU CAN START FROM HOME" is just a summary of that book.

If you would seriously consider wanting to be an Auto Loan Broker, an Online Handwriting Analyst, A Toner Cartridge Remanufacturer, an Online Astrologer, or would like to have a Virtual Cemetery, then this book is for you.

Thanks to the song and movie by Kenny "The Gambler" Rogers, most of us now understand that "you've got to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em." This axiom can be applied around a conference table as well as a card table. In The Poker MBA, Jeffrey Gitomer and Greg Dinkin take this concept to the extreme by drawing a world of business advice from the popular pastime. "There is no better training ground for business than a poker game, where your ability to measure risk and make split-second decisions determines whether you cash out a winner," note Dinkin, an MBA-carrying columnist for Card Player magazine, and Gitomer, a writer and sales-and-service consultant. The authors use simulated hands and real tournament settings to illustrate how both pursuits relate in strategy (reading the competition, keeping cards close to the table), technique (acting on prior knowledge, maintaining sufficient cash), and starting anew (choosing a setting, selecting proper partners). Sprinkling the book with quotes from the likes of Dale Carnegie, Sun Tzu, and Peter Drucker, they stress that success in each undertaking is largely determined by discipline, skill, and cunning, and they recount a variety of proven applications from cards that could prove equally effective in commerce. --Howard Rothman

        Book Description

The world of poker is the real world. Risk and reward are measured every second of the game. The same is true in business. An MBA is a nice credential, but the first step to business success is knowing how to read others, when to bluff, and when to walk away—no matter how high the stakes. The same is true in poker.

In The Poker MBA poker professional and MBA Greg Dinkin and bestselling author Jeffrey Gitomer show you how to apply the skills acquired at the poker table to all levels of business. By using the principles outlined in this book, you will achieve an edge over your competition and learn skills that aren’t taught in a traditional business school program. Shrewd poker players and their business counterparts are not born that way—they learned their craft, and you can, too.

There is no better training ground for business than a poker game, where your ability to think strategically and make split-second decisions determines whether you cash out a winner. A world-champion poker player like Amarillo Slim and a world-class businessman like Bill Gates each possess the same set of skills. Both men are:

        * Strategic thinkers
        * Shrewd decision makers
        * Adept at reading others
        * Able to recover from a loss
        * Good enough actors to “fake it” and win—they can bluff

Whether you are an intern, a department manager, a salesperson, an entrepreneur, or the CEO of a major company, basic poker skills can be used to add to your business success. By understanding winning poker strategy, you’ll learn how to read people, close deals, negotiate contracts, motivate employees, build a brand, create customer loyalty, and make day-to-day business decisions that will contribute to your bottom line.

The Poker MBA takes you inside the high-stakes world of poker to show that winning at poker and winning at business are one and the same. Through the lens of poker, readers will learn sophisticated concepts such as expected value, regression to the mean, and discounted cash flows—all in a format that is entertaining and easy to understand.
If you see things from the perspective of others, the odds will fall in your favor, and you will be a winner in the long run. This book shows you how to use the traits of a poker professional to become a better risk taker and decision maker in order to profit more in business.

        A poker book? Sure.

        A business book? Absolutely.

But more important, The Poker MBA is a money book. Read it and you will improve your ability to think and execute so that the odds stay in your favor and you leave the game a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Interesting Read.......2006-11-30

It's really a shame that The Poker MBA doesn't get mentioned more than it does. It's a great read for everyone. The lessons go beyond poker and business and extend into the realm of everyday life. I give a copy to all my new interns and even to others as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Great compairson of poker to business.......2004-06-21

One of the greatest so called business strategy books often cited is Sun-Tzu "The Art of War", a treatise on warfare which has been adapted to the business world given that the arena of business is muhc like warfare. It is not surprising at all that the game of Poker also can be used to draw lessons and strategies in the business world.

I am a poker player, option trader and businessman and I found the book did an excellent job of showing the fun, intrigue and skill of poker and how it is played and how we can learn to use those same skills in negotiations, management and making investments. The book is written with great little stories and examples with special highlights of kep points and chapter summaries of diferent issues. If you love Poker, then you will love the details the book covers on what skills the pros use in bluffing, playing their hands, and reading their opponents. You will also enjoy how the authors show the use of those skills in business dealings and how relevant and useful those skills are.

To the reviewer who criticized the book in its discussion of poker and business, I think the reviewer missed an excellent point of hte book. Business is NOT a chess game where two people with equal resources (same pieces on the baord) deal with each other and the individual's skill level determines the winner. In chess, everything is out there on the board and your emotion plays no role in affecting your other opponent. for example, one side cannot seem more desparate at the beginning of the game before the pieces have been moved.

However this is not true in the real world. In business negotations, parties do not have the same resource to compete with. Parties are also coming from different emotional states. One side may be very desparate to get a deal doen while the other has enough money to wait out the deal and see if something better comes along. The individual skill in such settings is how you use your resources and emotions and play with the hand that has been dealt to you. This is poker at its finest.

If you have a good hand, you still need to analyze what your opponent has and how he or she is betting. But what if they are bluffing? Don't we bluff in business deals as well. The same pshychology that goes into learning your opponent and determing if they are bluffing you based on teh card showing is the same skill we need to sit across from someone at a negotiation table and determine what they are offering and what we can offer. It is also true in managing people and handling investments. The skills of POKER are very transferable to the business world.

THis book does a great job of showing how the wonderful skills of poker can be used in the business world and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. After just reading it once, it already got my mind thinking a different way when I consider future business proposals, negotiations or just dealing with co-workers on business issues.

        5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2003-04-28

As both a stockbroker and a poker player i found this book to be quite fascinating.. it does a great job of using poker philosophies in business.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating read on the strategy of business & poker.......2003-01-05

This book is well written and fun to read. The analogies between poker & business are undeniable and insightful.

        1) Know your opponent. Don't assume that they think like you, often they don't.

"Bad players play their own hand. Good ones play their opponent's hand first, then worry about their own cards." (pg 15)

        2) In negotiation (and poker), remember three rules:
        a) don't give up something without getting something in return
        b) keep a poker face (e.g. Boxers are trained to smile after being hit - to show their fortitude)
        c) let your opponent feel like they are winning (so they will do business with you again)

        3) The answer is rarely black/white. The answer is IT DEPENDS. Advanced poker players think on many different levels.

        4) Don't gamble. Do your homework and know the odds. Take calculated risks. If possible, be the house (not the player) by creating the system that other people use and pay for.

        5) "Information has value. Just as you wouldn't give away cash, don't give away ideas - unless they contribute to you or your organization."

"It's who you know and who knows you. Find out the people of influence that you need to know, and earn the right to meet them." (pg 89)

        6) ". . .the minute you achieve success, people will be coming after you. The best way to guard against it is to keep your success to yourself. (pg 92)

        7) Don't put yourself in the situation where you HAVE TO win. The urgency of the situation puts you at a disadvantage.

        8) Poker is a zero-sum game, but life and business are not.

        9) Pump it, or dump it. In poker ". . you typically should either raise the pot (pump it) and take control of the hand or fold (dump it) and get out entirely. Just calling is an option, but rarely the right one." (pg 107) The same applies to business, stick to your strengths. 80/20 principle.

        10) Be tight and aggressive. For poker, play only a few hands, but play them hard. For business, focus your investments.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-07-26

As a poker player and businessman, I found this book to be both extremely enjoyable and useful. The analogies are terrific, and the lessons to be learned are money. I plan on buying copies for my managers. I have often believed that many of the skills I use in poker are useful in business; this book confirms it! A must read!

I read the book hoping to find some new ways to addressing the problems I face while introducing new technology to my organisation. Some of the approach are quite standard but at least I know that the things I am doing is not too far off.

Would recommend this to the managers, especially those who do not have IT background as the author explains the terms clearly. However, if more case studies were available, it would have been much easier to grasp the concepts. The author could have gone down to more details.

I did not think this book was that useful in that it does not reach any techniques but rather it allows you to glean ideas from mistakes that companies have made. It presents different cases from the real world but coming from a background of no marketing experience, I did not find this technique all that useful.

3 out of 5 stars Great book with a difficult language.......2004-05-10

This is a great book, however, author's use of "difficult" language makes it a hard reading for students. The point of this book should entirely be to emphasize on facts, rather than to showcase author's verbal capabilities.

4 out of 5 stars Bold Retailers and Innovative Products spiral in flaming.......2001-12-06

I took a few technology marketing courses in grad school, and became moderately interested in the process. When I saw "Marketing Mistakes" (1976) for sale at a thrift shop, I snapped it up.

This is actually interesting stuff for anyone interested in the growth and death of businesses, not just for marketing majors.

The eleven case studies describe how a retailer (e.g., Montgomery Ward, which finally augered in last year, and Korvette, a discount chain I barely recollect), product (Du Pont's Corfam, an artificial leather), or grand old toy company (A.C. Gilbert) became moribund or outright crashed and burned.

There was a lot of nostalgia value in these for me. The names and histories evoked memories of advertising campaigns and jingles. Particularly poignant: The terrible last years of A.C. Gilbert, the august maker of chemistry sets and erector sets. They diluted the company name and ruined its reputation by expanding into girl's toys, infant's toys, and cheap discount-market items. Their decline was amazingly swift.

There are lots of lessons here for budding business folk, and for others an opportunity to understand why your favorite stores and products sometimes disappear.

                    Book Description

If a company changes a design after a product launch-and not during the concept stage-implementing the changes will cost 1,000 times more. Six Sigma, the near-perfect rate of only 3.4 defects per million opportunities and the management strategy to which Jack Welch attributes GE’s phenomenal success-is on the list of all successful organizations. Even with excellent Six Sigma implementation, most companies are able to achieve only Five Sigma, which is not enough in today’s ultracompetitive marketplace. For the first time, leading quality expert and author Subir Chowdhury presents Design For Six Sigma (DFSS), a revolutionary five-step process that takes a company all the way to Six Sigma.

3 out of 5 stars A good place to start with DFSS.......2006-09-19

I would tend to agree with most of the reviewers on this book; it is a good primer for people that have not been exposed to DFSS, or for someone that has been away from DFSS for a spell and need a refresher. It is certainly worth the $12.

It is a good book, well structured and well-written. Chapter 4, "Identify and Define Opportunity" is well illustrated and explained - the "House of Quality" proves that this is not the "only way to achieve Six Sigma", as it is an illustration of the correlation between the who, what, where, when, how and how much of an initiative - the mantra of most process improvement methodologies.

What this book does really well, is bring home the point that you must design the end of the process - control - to make a process deliver what it should - performance & quality. Improvement for a reason.

This is a good quick read for management that wants a broad understanding of DFSS. However if you are looking for a book with substance and a lot of application info, consider "Design for Six Sigma : A Roadmap for Product Development." By Kai Yang and Basem EI-Haik.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for Managers and Executives.......2005-11-21

This book by Quality Guru Subir Chowdhury is EXCELLENT PRIMER for managers and executives. As Mr. Chowdhury has been credited in the prestigious Industry Week magazine for introducing this new book and popularizing DFSS in the world.

I loved this book's easy style of writing and STRONGLY RECOMMEND it to anyone who wants to know what is DFSS and its applicability.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-06-11

Design For Six Sigma by Subir Chowdhury is the timely book on the topic. This book is about DOING RIGHT at the first time. This book is about FIRE PREVENTION rather than Fire Fighting. If American corporations want to lead the world, they MUST adopt DFSS. And to understand this complex topic, MANAGERS and LEADERS MUST READ this book. Take Chowdhury's advice very seriously. The book explains the common misconceptions about the topic and its usage of tools. By writing this valuable book, Chowdhury filled the gap for the first time.
Definitely Chowdhury's bestseller THE POWER OF SIX SIGMA is a 2 hour easy read story book, which is enjoyable and fun reading. Even though this book is written in business style, still it is fun reading. Chowdhury's style of writing excites the reader on the process.

Six Sigma Corporate Executive Champions from Caterpillar, Johns Manville, Merrill Lynch, Sunbeam, and Dow Corning highly endorsed this book. After finish reading the book, I understand why all of these Six Sigma devotees are so high on this book.

Thank you, Chowdhury!!! We look forward to your NEXT MASTERPIECE!!!

If you are serious about Six Sigma or DFSS, READ THIS BOOK. I strongly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars OK intro for total novices but teaches you virtually nothin.......2003-07-26

That book is good for a coast-to-coast flight. Has virtually no substance, can't learn anything from it. Has some value for novices. Misassigned quotes, incorrect dates, off the cuff graphs, fluffy fluff.
Borrow it from a library, do not buy for you bookshelf. If you have a backwards looking manager, buy it for him as a gift.

2 out of 5 stars Of no interest to Black Belts looking to implement DFSS.......2003-04-03

This book may appeal to middle management or executive level managers who are taking a first pass at DFSS and are not familiar with Six Sigma in general. Frankly, this book is a waste to time if you are looking for a meaty how-to on how to implement design for six sigma at your company. The author keeps telling the reader about the power of DFSS but lacks the substance to get you there. It is written as if it were a lengthy abstract to another textbook.

If you want to buy a gift for your boss--you're all set.

If you want a useful reference volume on DFSS look elsewhere.
