2 out of 5 stars An important topic treated too lightly.......2002-12-28

Really, IT is facing a big transformation from cost center through service provider to (hopefully) business partner. However, this one ends up with some interesting points here, some good concepts there (more than half are quotes from famous schalors such as Porter), and followed by some cases description (it's not qualified as study). I suggest authors should fit the content into one article and save both our time and money.

So the bottom line: For those who could implement the concepts already, this book provides no add value; for those who couldn't, this book can't help you, either.

5 out of 5 stars Keep the Focus on What it Takes to Achieve IT Success.......2002-08-17

This book was suggested reading for my masters degree in business management. As a former project leader and current manager in IT this book is priceless. Making technical, leadership and communication work together in partnering IT is the key. All too often IT is seen as a separate entitity as opposed to the vital asset that it is. Getting that handshake between IT's role and the business end of your corporation is an investment all successful IT centers make.

5 out of 5 stars Best practices in customer-focused IT management.......2002-07-28

Although the title implies a focus on IT portfolio management, the book goes into the core of IT management. For the IT manager or CIO this book is one of the most coherent and practical guides to what you need to do in order to deliver service and support in a cost-effective, mature manner.

The underlying theme is developing a value-based partnership between IT and the business process owners that IT supports. This is introduced and developed in Chapter 1 (Introduction), and is placed within the context of Porter's value chain. This chapter also covers value alignment as a guiding principle. Chapters 2 through 4 expand upon the concepts by explaining consequence-based thinking (a powerful technique for examining initiatives), organizational factors and issues in the form of matrixed resources and business/IT alignment, and value management.

Chapter 5 is particularly valuable because it shows how to transform the goals and objectives from the first four chapters into a strategy. The tactics that support the strategy are discussed in the subsequent chapters: drilling down into the small picture (Chapter 6), organizational details (Chapter 7), human capital management (Chapter 8) and investing in values (Chapter 9).

The final chapter, CIO responsibilities, and the appendices provide a strong foundation of guidelines and tools. I thought the appendices were particularly valuable, especially A (Sample Business Case Template) and (C) Desktop Development Standards and Procedures). Other material in the appendices includes (B) Personal Productivity Services Organization Overview and (D) Systems Development Contract.

There are two additional books that will nicely complement this one, and I recommend reading them after this one in the following order: Smart Business by Dave L. Chapman and Barry Sheehy, and Building Operational Excellence: Strategies to Improve It People and Processes by Dale Kutnick and Bruce Allen.

This IDC study provides a review and analysis of the trends around how small and medium-sized business (SMB) professional services are being supported, sold, and delivered. This study also covers the growing integration between vendor services organizations and channel partners and includes an overview of the activities of three key vendors in this area: IBM, Microsoft, and Cisco.

"A shift is under way in channel strategy that has the capacity to change how SMB professional services are supported, sold, and delivered. This shift can create new and expanded market opportunities if vendors align their services organizations well with current market trends and partner needs." — Paul Edwards, director, Software Partnering and Alliances

                  Book Description

"A must read for anyone interested in creating educationally sound campus environments. This book provides both a comprehensive review of environmental theory and practical strategies for enhancing student learning."
--Nancy J. Evans, associate professor and coordinator, Higher Education Program, Iowa State University

"Practitioners and students of all ages will greatly benefit from reading this synthesis of learning environment research and theory. The book draws on an impressively broad array of literature, and yet is organized for practical use."
--Will Barratt, associate professor of counseling, Indiana State University

Many books explore the effects of environments on people, but there are few that examine the complexities of campus settings and how they contribute to student learning and success. Educating by Design fills the information gap by providing a comprehensive model for creating student-friendly and learning-supportive campus environments.

Authors C. Carney Strange and James H. Banning draw from decades of research and experience to present an integrated framework for assessing and understanding academic environments. They describe the key concepts defining effective person-environment interactions and examine how these principles work through four different environmental components: physical, aggregate, organizational, and socially constructed. They also discuss the four conditions for successful learning: inclusion, safety, involvement, and community. Filled with engaging anecdotes and practical examples, this long-awaited volume helps academic administrators and student services professionals to plan effective programs and build supportive learning communities.

5 out of 5 stars Analysis of principles and forces at play.......2007-08-21

In this book Dr Karrass is discussing the principles of negotiating. There many things to take into account other than just power, even though power is obviously the most important single factor. Topics include the results of some experiments in negotiation, analysis of factors like who makes the concessions first, the role of motivation and sef-esteem, the importance of preparation, sources of negotiating power, perceived power vs real power, basic principles and some special cases of power, etc. The author has obviously given much thought to what makes a good negotiator. I recommend all of his books highly, starting with this as an introduction.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and Not Useful.......2006-03-10

I am the CEO of a medical device company. I've bought and sold scores of companies, products and licenses. While I've done an awful lot of negotiating, I always want to learn how to do it better.

Unfortunately, this book didn't help me very much.

The book is extremely boring. It goes on an on, yet never lays out a coherent negotiating strategy. Every 20 pages or so, it lays out a complex chart that is impossible to follow, let alone understand. It provides many negotiating examples. But, most of them involve Purchasing Departments or country-to-country foreign policy-related negotiations.

In an attempt to make credible points, the author often quotes negotiating "research." Many of the research designs he cites are so subjective and uncontrolled that no reputable business journal would want to report on them. It doesn't really matter though since most of the conclusions the author pulls from this "research" are very obvious. The few ideas from the research that sound genuinely new and intriquing are rarely developed adequately as the book meanders on.

In its favor, the book stresses the need to aim high when negotiating. That's great advice. The book also notes how confident people usually make the best negotiators. The book also made an inriguing point about negotiating with aggressive parties. You want to alternate between being tough and soft, not just one or the other. That's a great point and, in a rare moment of glory, the book does a very good job of developing this point.

However, if you're gearing up for a big negotiation and you want to get some useful negotiating advice beforehand, you won't get it from this book.

I have reviewed over and over again this material since 1987 and it never gets old. We don't need a lot of words here, if you want to be a better negotiator get your hands on as many of the Karras programs as you can. You will never regret it

4 out of 5 stars Negotiation in life........2005-03-13

The author makes the point that negotiation is not just for the buyer and/or seller. It is for everybody. Husbands negotiate with wives. Children negotiate with their parents. Workers negotiate with their bosses. To be an effective negotiator, you need to know yourself and your wants, your opponents wants and needs, and organize and plan your negotiation. In this way, you can learn to have negotiations and agreements that satisfy the wants of both you and your opponent. Ineffective negotiators will not meet their needs and become unhappy.
This is a great book to read to learn more about yourself and how you rationalize your decision making. Negotiation is indeed a great tool in everyday life (home and business). I commend the author for writing on this topic. This is a rare book that will help the reader with both his family and business. The only negative is the author putting much too much focus on theories when simple stories would suffice. This is why I gave this book a four star.

5 out of 5 stars The negotiating game.......2000-03-24

This book is excellent and really gets to the heart of the very nature of negotion. It is both insightful, and practical. I reccomend this book strongly and give my compliments to Chester L. Karrass!

                    Book Description

This book covers the organization, leadership, tools, practices and culture of intelligence. It reveals a powerful framework comprising new instruments, platforms and breakthrough concepts to address intelligence issues facing professionals and decision-makers, at the national and corporate levels, post September 11. Armed with a wide variety of real-life examples and road maps from business, government and the military, the author demonstrates how the framework can be applied to win customers and allies, seize opportunities, anticipate threats, shield assets from adversaries, and gain insights into the mindset of stakeholders, by legal and ethical means. The content is based on Harvard University Global System™ management road maps pioneered by the author Alain Paul Martin.

The failure to act on valuable intelligence is legion. About half of the book addresses this issue with new instruments for intelligence analysis and interpretation. A full chapter focuses on anticipating and managing surprise events, and another covers the application of the issue-incubation cycle, as an early warning system. Neglecting this cycle can result in undue risk exposure and flawed decisions. In addition, acting on valuable intelligence requires the commitment of a team, with members playing complementary roles. Otherwise, too many important ideas, intelligent trails and even great goals and missions are abandoned. The book examines the power, status and role of the catalysts of intelligence-led change. It also introduces new intelligence tools used to analyze the perceptions and behavior of consumers and other stakeholders.

The book is suitable for general audiences. Learning about intelligence can help each of us make wiser choices, work better and be a more informed and accountable citizen. Technical terms are explained thoroughly. Real-life examples about people and important issues will be fun to read, talk about, both at work and to stimulate discussions and give your staff or students a primer on intelligence.

All in all, this is an excellent, timely and easy to read book with entertaining, vivid examples and breakthrough instruments, most of which are not available elsewhere. As illustrated by the following testimonies, this book is highly recommended for managers, professionals, educators and students in business, government and the military.

4 out of 5 stars Fun to read. Good to grow customer-service sales........2003-04-25

The stories featured in A. P. Martin's Harnessing the Power of Intelligence are fun to read and talk about, at work and at home. I have used some of them to alert my customer-service team about hidden risks and untapped opportunities. We have been applying the ideas of the first six chapters (Part I) for about three months. Our interactions with customers are yielding better results. We are now moving aggressively to prevent tampering with our information assets as noted in the section titled "How Good Organizations Lose Intelligence".
Four of my high-school educated supervisors, who read the book, found Part I a down-to-earth eye-opener, and right on target, for making wiser choices and avoiding costly errors. They, however, thought Part II would be more applicable to middle and senior management. A drawback: the cases in the chapter on Psychographics lack the detail necessary to be useful.
I have also read C. S. Fleisher's Strategic and Competitive Intelligence. Both books represent, in my opinion, two different, credible and complementary approaches to intelligence-based decision-making. Except for some references, there is virtually no duplication of content. A big bonus!

                    5 out of 5 stars A masterful work.......2003-04-05

Alain Paul Martin gives us a new, non-traditional, and thought-provoking guide to intelligence gathering and strategic planning. This book is must reading for decision makers. Its incisive analyses, practical framework, and real-world examples provide valuable lessons that can be immediately put to use as we cope with our ever-changing world. Mr. Martin deserves our congratulations and our gratitude for this masterful work.

5 out of 5 stars Turning Intelligence into Value.......2003-02-21

"Ninety percent of the information used in organizations is internally focused and only ten percent about the outside environment. This is exactly backwards." -- Peter Drucker

As usual, in one pithy phrase, management sage Peter Drucker captured the central problem facing organizations in uncertain environments -- they look in the wrong place. In volatile times, humans tend to hunker down in the cocoon of the controllable. Effective leaders embrace such times as an opportunity for greatness, when the prepared organization can jump ahead of ostrich-like competition.

Yet, few management advisors opine on how to combat these human tendencies and systematically scan, analyze and act in uncertain environments. Michael Porter's classic works on Competitive Strategy and Competitive Advantage did dispense advice on competitive intelligence gathering, but did not attend to the conversion of intelligence into commercial advantage. Alain Martin's new book "Harnessing the Power of Intelligence" compiles tested processes which create such value.

Martin's frameworks are based on research at American Express, Boeing, Dell, DuPont, GlaxoSmithKline, and Microsoft as well as application of his ideas in businesses, government, and the military. The book has the most up to date, and complete list of intelligence sources. For example, Martin cites the University of California at Berkeley "invisible web" project, which has shown that search engines only document about 15% of the business intelligence available publicly, because the vast majority of it is either not in a standard hypertext format or not linked to a public domain name (the silent campers). His framework on issue incubation, shows that large scale issues go through a relatively predictable process of incubation and development. Many leaders make the mistake of getting on an issue too early or too late. The issue incubation process delineates ways to recognize the progression of topics, and provides advice on if, when and how to intervene. Martin also has a tool called, Factional Analysis that helps a manager analyze who is likely to influence a volatile situation (from allies to adversaries). This tool is much richer than the traditional stakeholder analysis for it includes roles that do not fit in the normal economic calculus. For example, he includes "fanatics" in the analysis -- people whose sole purpose is to disrupt.

A leader can take the advice in this book and use it to guide outward looking intelligence, assess the current state of issues (or do a triage on a surprise event), and then take concerted action.

At points, the book does suffer from the same weakness of Porter's books in that its desire for completeness, the text often has a "list-like" feel. But, on balance this book provides a framework full of tested tools to turn uncertainty into value.

5 out of 5 stars Serious Book on Competitive Intelligence.......2003-02-13

I have read countless publications on strategy and competitive intelligence. Since I was often disappointed, I was hesitant to buy the new book "Harnessing the Power of Intelligence" and commit precious hours to study its content. But I quickly changed my mind after glancing over the long list of testimonials from well-respected intelligence experts and executives who highly recommend the book. It is now clear to me that author Alain Paul Martin has distilled the lessons of his extensive field experience to craft a practical framework that has been successfully applied in the private and public sectors.
Apart from the first Chapter, which I skipped, here is my impression about the rest of the book.

Chapter 2 "Building A High-Performing Organization" offers tips on the role of chief intelligence officers, issue managers, intelligence collectors and other scanning resources in an intelligence-centric organization. The section on intelligence culture deserves a greater coverage.

Chapter 3 "Building Intelligence Capital" starts with a brief discussion on scanning but the competitive-intelligence road map is a real gem.

Chapters 4 and 5 on intelligence platforms, search engines and the invisible Web are relevant to a wide range of occupations and activities beyond competitive intelligence. Just by applying the tips in the Brain Stem-Cell Case Study, I got my money and time worth within a week of reading Chapter 4.

Chapter 6 "Intelligence Security in Business and Government" does not provide new material to intelligence experts but is a good primer, filled with examples, for managers.

Chapters 7 and 8 examine the process of opportunity and threat incubation through the lenses of Martin's powerful paradigm. The illustrations suggest that the instrument is already used to capture new markets, and anticipate and manage various risks. The appendix on the Mad-Cow issue in Britain supports the framework and adds credibility to it. It is written by Dr. Brian Morrissey, a veterinary scientist who led government R&D on a host of complex national and global issues related to food and health protection.

The ideas and tools described in both Chapters 9 and 10 are the most advanced I have ever came across on stakeholders' analysis. Chapter 9 offers novel tips to identify the players who can make a difference in managing projects or reaching deals. It also sheds a new light on the role and power dynamics between these players. Chapter 10 helps readers map the positions and perceptions of the stakeholders, a pre-requisite for strategy formulation. Chapter 11 is a basic introduction to psychographics and VALS. Chapter 12 completes the book with concluding remarks about the application of intelligence to our personal lives.

The book is highly recommended to managers and students in military colleges, business and public administration. Chapters 7 through 10 will be of great interest to intelligence analysts who are constantly in search of new ways to connect the dots. I hesitate between a rating of 4 out of 5 stars for expert readers and 5/5 for managers. Actually, the framework alone is worth 5/5 and is without match in the world of competitive intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative Ideas and Road Maps Welcomed in Japan.......2003-02-09

Alain Paul Martin's "Harnessing the Power of Intelligence, Counterintelligence & Surprise Events" is a great pleasure to read. This practical book is clearly based on extensive research and fieldwork in competitive intelligence in America, Europe and Japan. For over a decade, Japan has been shifting from large-scale manufacturing to a knowledge-based economy, and moving production facilities to Asian countries. The competitive-intelligence method and road maps described in this book can help managers fast-track projects and new-product development, and succeed in this new environment.

As a scientist who has made the transition from managing R&D in a global company to educating graduate students in management, I recommend Martin's book to entrepreneurs, scientists and fellow educators. I also agree with Harvard Professor Mark Thompson who states: "Alain martin has deftly incorporated, adapted, challenged, and complemented the insights of Fuld, Porter, Sun Tzu, and others to achieve a superb practical guide to the strategic and tactical management of institutional information."

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Surprise.......2005-06-14

I really didn't expect to find many patterns I would want to make in this book, but there are a ton of great ideas! One thing I love is that there is such a variety. There are some for babies, some are great for kids, some are feminine, and there are a lot that are very neutral or even perfect for a man. There is also a nice variety in skill levels which is great, because that way you never get bored. The yarns are easy to find or to substitute. Most are either worsted wt or chunky and there are several sport wt. The ghans are photographed nicely too, so that you can get an idea of how different color schemes look with different decor styles.

What I didn't expect from this book was the quality of the afghans that I found. I truly thought this would be a fluff-type, I'm-so-popular-so-buy-my-book crochet book. I was greatly surprised and found it a delightful and interesting book filled with lots of crochet designs that will either stump you and make you want to throw the book across the room (guilty as charged) or it will make you go across the room, pick up the book and challenge yourself to make some really great afghans that your family will pat you on the back for and make them say great things about you! (I like that part!). This book is not a disappointment!

4 out of 5 stars A great book for a more advanced crocheter........2000-05-31

I do not recommend this book if you are just beginning to crochet. While the instructions are fairly clear, the patterns are a bit more difficult and appear to be geared to the intermediatte crocheter. Also, if you are like me and do not enjoy(or have time for)much assembly of your afghans, I would suggest trying another book as the majority of the patterns in this book require whip-stitching and such to complete the afghan.

If you are past the beginning stages of crocheting, this book has several beautiful and fun patterns for both practical and display use. I have made two of the afghans and while they took time, they were beautiful once completed. A good book to add to your collection once you feel you are ready for a challenge.

This book is very easy to understand, the directions are written clearly and the photographs of the afghans themselves are absolutely beautiful. It has inspired me to make all of the afghans featured in the book. I also like this book because there are some very cool afghans to crochet and I would not be embarrased to show them off to any of my friends who are still in the 22-28 yrs old range. This is a lot of fun just to look at. I would also recommend any of the other Vanna White crocheting books as well. They are all put together very well.

                          Book Description

The Great Depression was the worst economic catastrophe in modern history. Not only did it cause massive worldwide unemployment, but it also led to the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany, World War II in Europe, and the tragic deaths of tens of millions of people. This book describes the sequence of policy errors committed by powerful, well-meaning people in several countries, which, in combination with the gold standard in place at the time, caused the disaster. In addition, it details attempts to reduce unemployment in the United States by Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, and in Germany by Hitler's National Socialist economic policies.
A comprehensive economic and historical explanation of the events pertaining to the Depression, this book begins by describing the economic setting in the major industrialized countries during the 1920s and the gold standard that linked theory economies together. It then discusses the triggering event that started the economic decline--the Federal Reserve's credit tightening in reaction to perceived overspeculation in the U.S. stock market. The policy bungling that transformed the recession into the Great Depression is detailed: Smoot Hawley, the Federal Reserve's disastrous adherence to the real bills doctrine, and Hoover's 1932 tax hike. This is followed by a detailed description of the New Deal's shortcomings in trying to end the Depression, along with a discussion of the National Socialist economic programs in Germany. Finally, the factors that ended the Depression are examined.
This book will appeal to economists, historians, and those interested in business conditions who would like to know more about the causes and consequences of the Great Depression. It will be particularly useful as a supplementary text in economic history courses.
Thomas E. Hall and J. David Ferguson are both Professors of Economics, Miami University.

                          1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste your time.......2004-05-06

This was a very hard to read, boring book that outlines the same basic principles for hundreds of pages. Don't bother - there are much better books out there.

5 out of 5 stars Rigorous scholarship, accessible and enjoyable read.......2002-05-20

I have never submitted a "reader's review" to Amazon, but have to add mine here after noting the one negative review below. All the other positive reviewers have it right. This book hits the mark and does exactly what it appears to be designed to do. It is accessible for a broad spectrum of readers, while maintaining a rigorous scholarly standard. And, amazingly, it is an enjoyable read, for both scholars AND graduate and undergraduate students (and maybe the intellectually curious non-fiction reader?). I hope the one rambling (and somewhat odd?) negative review will be dismissed by Amazon visitors. In my opinion, this is a book which should be read by anyone who wants to understand the complex forces and historical context which resulted in the Great Depression.

2 out of 5 stars An irritating mish-mash.......2001-04-10

If you have no idea what happened to the world economy in the two decades following WW1, then this little book is a great primer. It contains a lovely chronology of events, discusses in a simplistic way how the gold standard actually worked, how the real bills doctrine impeded effective monetary loosening and how Roosevelt prolonged the depression. It's a (mostly) monetarist view and easy to understand at that.

On a second read though, 'The Great Depression' becomes very irritating; for three reasons....

The first is its changing view of the causes of decline and recovery. It starts out monetarist but ends up closer to the Austrian view that government intervention and socialism prolonged the recovery. You can't be both, although the authors try very hard.

The second problem is the use of history. Many historically minded authors have made a big issue of the vicious Versailles Peace Treaty and its role in destabilising the international payments system. Hall and Ferguson hardly mention international issues. Instead, they waffle on about Hitler's evil labour policies, but forget to mention their effect. Huge capital flows left Europe for the New World in the mid-1930s and these played a very significant role in boosting US money supply and spurring recovery.

The third problem is the book's very simplistic economics. At the heart of the problem was the issue of real exchange rate adjustment amongst Gold Standard members. The authors make no attempt to explain the extent of the adjustment problems when members faced either hyperinflation or balance of payments deficits after 1918.

Countries facing BOP deficits with newly enfranchised labour forces were in no position to use traditional means of real exchange rate adjustment - i.e. deflation - to bring their currencies and payments accounts back into line. Social unrest was everywhere. Impossible strain was placed on domestic economies as interest rates went up. And when Austrian bank, Bank Kredit-Anstalt, failed, the international payments system fell apart and asset prices collapsed. No one had the guts to raise rates to hold currencies within their trading ranges.

Hall and Ferguson gloss over the international angle as if it was irrelevant. They could at least have tried to explain why they thought it wasn't important or didn't play a central role.

All told, I'd recommend this book to anyone coming across this fascinating period for the first time. But there are much better books out there. Also, parochial books with constant references to us and ours when referring to the US and its institutions are really tiresome to non-US readers.

Two stars for the technical bits, the chronology and the details of Roosevelt's New Deal.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Summary.......2001-03-29

Hall and Ferguson do an excellent job of summarizing the mainstream view of economists on why the Depression happened, and those views will surprise some. Was the Depression caused by some structural defect in Capitalism? "No," say Hall and Ferguson. It was due to a combination of economic ignorance, confusion, and incompetence in the Federal Reserve System. The authors do a wonderful job of explaining how the conventional wisdom of the day, the commercial loan theory of banking, led policy makers into a series of blunders that seem incomprehensible today to anyone who knows basic economics. As for the New Deal, Hall and Ferguson argue that except for deposit insurance and gold policy, most of it was irrelevant or counterproductive and contributed only to slowing the recovery after 1933.

If you want to read only one book and still understand why the Great Depression happened, read this one.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful summary of events leading to The Great Depressio.......1999-11-01

Hall and Ferguson offer a great review of the events leading to and prolonging the Great Depression. This event was experienced around the world and this books explains why. As a student of Macroeconomics in today's world, it is fascinating to go back in time before the term "macroeconomics" was in existence. Poor policy choices and the desire to hold onto the Gold Standard outline the events leading to this worldwide tragedy. A wonderful summary of history and economic policy than anyone can follow.

5 out of 5 stars NLP For Telephone Sales.......2003-04-25

I recently switched fields from direct in-home sales to an inside B2B Sales rep (not telemarketing!) and this book has been a great read as well as a fountain of ideas and creativity!

The author offers sound advice on how to create rapport with the person on the other end of the phone. This is difficult since we cannot (yet anyway) see the person we're speaking with. You read in modern sales manuals about matching or mirroring body positions and postures yet few to none of these guru taught books say squat about how to do this over the phone! Enter Sharon Drew Morgan to the rescue!

Typical face-to-face communication is 7% word selection, 38% tone and inflecton and 55% BODY LANGUAGE. However when you're on the phone, Morgan points out that when you throw out the Body Language, your voice tone and inflection is 83% and word choice is a mere 17% important!

Morgan also offers some solid strategies to get and maintain rapport and she explains the "We Space" concept quite well. If you work in inside sales such as advertising, catalogs, etc., this book will be a beneficial boon for you to get, study and apply.

5 out of 5 stars Wow , what a great model for phone sales.......2000-02-09

This book is a breakthrough with doing business over the phone. It is informative and detailed in the productivity that it can achieve. I keep the book nearby when I make calls and use the references constantly. My clients now buy from me instead of me selling. This book is a must for all who are in the search for a competitive edge.

                                Book Description

This program is for working women who are fed up with the male dominance in their business or social organization. This is a program for women who want to break into the "good old boy" network for a greater chance at getting promoted and having a voice in the future of their organization. This program outlines the techniques for making more logical and objective business decisions. A female supervisor or "informal leader" who wants to be part of a more logical decision-making process can use this program workbook. Phase I of the workbook sets the tone by explaining that group decision-making will be the focus, however many of the processes can be used for individual decisions. Phase II reviews eight decision-making processes and invites the reader to select one to use at work. Phase III presents refinements to the processes in phase II where more objectivity and logic are desired in the decision-making process. Examples are brainstorming and how to select the best alternative. Phase IV outlines factors that are present in all business decision-making environments. This includes the political, social, and personality factors. Individual versus team decision-making is reviewed. Phase V presents options for special decision-making. Examples are strategic planning, and quality improvement teams. The appendix contains examples and blank work sheets for decision-making situations.

You are NOT asked to be less feminine, but merely to use provided techniques to influence men to respect your logic and objectivity. Benefits included in the program are: (1) Reviewing a variety of decision-making processes, understanding when each process should be used, and how to apply these processes with the males in the organization. Many of these processes can be used in your personal life, (2) Being able to implement the basic decision-making techniques in a team/group environment. This is because work teams are now a standard work unit in many organizations, (3) Learning how to apply refinements to the basic processes where increased objectivity is desired. Examples of these refinements include brainstorming and how to select the best alternative, (4) Knowing how to plan for the different factors in the decision-making environment for more successful final decisions, (5) Having a variety of examples and blank forms for easier application of the processes, (6) Having the aid of a support system to assist in the learning process. Step-by-step encouragement is offered at the web site for each phase of the program, and interactive communication with the author is offered in using the techniques with specific males, (7) Building confidence in your new abilities, which should reduce work stress and improve the feeling of "wellness," and (8) Learning these techniques with an easy-to-follow 59 page workbook with "do-it-now" steps and worksheets, in the self-paced privacy of home or office.

With complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) providers broadening their national lobbying efforts and gaining ground in many legislative districts, guidelines for the industry could be changing for years to come, which makes The State Guide to CAM Specialties a must-have for those involved in the industry. An annual, definitive guide to the legal compliance issues relevant to fourteen license levels of CAM practitioners, this publication will assist insurance providers in determining which CAM and nursing services to offer (or stop offering) their patients and which practitioners to recruit to best provide those services. State-by-state breakdowns of specific practice guidelines clearly outline what services practitioners can and cannot legally deliver to their patients. Physicians interested in integrating CAM treatment into an already established practice - either by practicing the services themselves or hiring a CAM provider - also will benefit from the material in this well-organized volume.
