    Book Description

    This universally recognised publication contains a broad compilation of energy supply and consumption statistics for more than 100 non-OECD countries and regions, including developing countries, Central and Eastern European countries and the former USSR. Data are expressed in original units and in heat content. Historical tables for both individual countries and regions summarize data on coal, oil, gas and electricity production, trade and consumption as well as main energy and economic indicators since 1973. For the first time, the 1998 edition includes historical series of biomass consumption by country, by region and for the world; these series are based on available data and, when these are unavailable, on estimates. Each issue of the publication includes definitions of products and flows, notes on the individual countries and conversion factors from original units to common energy units. (Similar data for OECD are available in the IEA publications Energy Statistics of OECD Countries 1995-1996 and Energy Balances of OECD Countries 1995-1996.)

      5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2003-05-12

      The book takes the basic schmooze and networking and shows some basic ways to increase your schmooze

      5 out of 5 stars Fresh new perspective. Great context for daily action........2002-04-21

      Despite the unusual title, this is a very powerful book. I found that an odd word (Schmooze) can speak to a lot of what we do everyday to not only be successful, but also enjoy the process. This book presents that as a lifestyle, a way of living that can then increase the trajectory of success and enjoyment.

      There are useful anecdotes and exercises. It is also a fun read. They should probably charge more.

      4 out of 5 stars Schmoozin's Great.......2002-01-05

      With the tremendous emphasis on technology and impersonal internet sales, the concept of the "schmooze" is fascinating. It has wonderful application to both personal and business situations. I think it's part of the more kind and more gentle environment that we live in since 9/11.

      While easy to understand the concept of schmoozing, this book makes it simple for people who are not naturally outgoing and interested in others. It is truly amazing how much we can learn by being friendly and listening.

      Ty has struck a nerve in everyone that is too busy, in too much of a hurry. If we take the time to interact with those around us, our lives will become enriched, and so will the lives of the people with whom we schmooze. Schmoozing becomes natural and sometimes profitable.

        Book Description

        Inventors, business people, programmers and other professionals often possess confidential information that gives them an advantage in their field. The sad reality, however, is that a secret can be leaked, obliterating any benefit it provided.

        Protect yourself and your business. Armed with Nondisclosure Agreements, you have the step-by-step instructions and legal forms you need to safeguard your trade secrets, even if they reach the wrong hands.

        Written by attorneys who specialize in intellectual property, this book guides you through the development of a nondisclosure agreement, explaining the "fine print" so that you can keep your information confidential. Nondisclosure agreements can be tailored for every type of situation, including:

        * employers maintaining employee secrecy
        * inventors keeping their gadgets under wraps
        * businesses licensing their secret technology
        * programmers beta-testing their software
        * marketers protecting customer lists
        * and many more

        The book provides a thorough, easy-to-follow analysis of trade secret law and nondisclosure agreements, including an explanation of how trade secrets are created and who owns them. Includes over 15 forms as tear-outs and on CD-ROM.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Applies to all businesses, but especially consultants.......2002-05-12

        This book is applicable to all businesses and industries, but my review is from the perspective of an IT consultant. In my profession we've all signed a nondosclosure agreement at one time or another, and we frequently make presentations or provide information that discloses trade secrets, or business-sensitive information to clients and potential clients.

        This book contains a clear explanation about what you should be protecting with a nondisclosure agreement and does so in detail. The author clearly explains how to protect youself from both employees and competitors, as well as from potential business alliances (contractor/subcontractor, suitors in a merger or acquisition to whom you expose sensitive information, and clients to whom you make presentations and reveal processes and other sensitive information).

        Key topics of importance that this book covers include:

        * How much protection an NDA affords you.
        * Remedies available to you in the NDA is violated.
        * Alternatives to NDAs.

        It also covers non-compete agreements and their limitations, especially in certain states, and gives example NDAs for specific situations such as beta testing, customer data, etc. The accompanying CD ROM provides fifteen sample forms that can be used with little or no modification (although I recommend that all be checked by an attorney who specializes in intellectual property law and is familiar with nuances of the law in your state).

        Book Description

        Score the paper, make a cut, and give it a fold; that’s gupit-gupit, the art of creating amazing three-dimensional sculptures. The name comes from Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines, and it means “cut cut.” Master Ben A. Gonzales, a native Filipino, illustrates all the techniques in this unique collection of paper animals—and both kids and adults will love constructing them. It’s easy: Each creature is made from only a single sheet, directions are laid out in a straightforward manner, and the nice large patterns proceed logically from simple forms to the more complicated. (The number of stars next to each project gives the level of difficulty.) Choose from a butterfly, bear, kangaroo, swan, squirrel, Tyrannosaurus rex, whale, and many others.

        5 out of 5 stars Great even for kids.......2007-01-19

        Paper, Scissors, Sculpt! has good pictures that you can trace onto paper which you can then cut, score and sculpt. The various shapes are rated from easy to more difficult, in that order, so that you can learn as you progress. The instructions are clear.
        My 4-1/2 yr. old granddaughter was able to make a snake and a bat with little help from me. She was thrilled with the resulting snake (and added glittery eyes).
        Though I haven't had time to make many of the animals I'm looking forward to working on the more advanced designs.

        5 out of 5 stars Paper, scissors,sculpt - a grrrrreat step-by-step book!.......2006-12-01

        Paper, Scissors, Sculpt is an awesome book for all ages! It's way easier then origami and it takes almost no time at all. In this book, you can learn how to quickly make a snake that curls naturally or giraffe that actually supports itself...all with regular paper! Whats more, is that for each project you need no more than one piece of paper.

        Anyone should seriously check out Ben A. Gonzales book for some amzing rainy-day (or any day) fun!

        - JJ, 11

        5 out of 5 stars For the absolute beginner.......2006-09-13

        This book assumes you know nothing about sculpting. It is in larger print and clear diagrams for each step and technique. The basics are given along with a photograph of each tool, optional tools and supplies. The projects to make are in order of difficulty and rated with one to four stars. Several patterns range from a simple snake to a complex stegosaurus. Each page has a full scale pattern along with a picture of the finished sculpture followed by clear diagrams and instructions. This is great for kids and a classroom. There is a gallery of even harder ones pictured for those daring to create their own patterns and copy them on their own.

        Book Description

        This book discusses the main topics of the public-social choice literature of the past 40 years. Separate chapters discuss various applied public choice questions such as rent seeking, the growth of government, the rise and decline of nations, political business cycles, why people vote, and the nature and extent of redistribution. The book details normative issues in public choice, including Bergson-Samuelson social welfare functions, the Arrow and Sen impossibility theorems, the work of John Rawls, John Harsanyi, James Buchanan, and Gordon Tullock. This book is a major revision of Public Choice, containing eleven new chapters in addition to substantial revision and expansion. Separate sections containing proofs of the most important theorems have been added. It is appropriate for both graduate and undergraduate courses in public choice economics and political theory, or as a supplement in courses dealing with related questions such as public finance.

        4 out of 5 stars Highlights important issues.......2003-08-29

        I used this book quite heavily for my Masters degree in philosophy and public policy. Mueller's book is well cited in a wide variety of literature which is a testament to its importance.

        He gives a basic albeit technical overview of many policy issues, and he relies heavily on mathematical contructions. Of most interest to me as a philosopher are his later chapters on justice and rights, where he discusses very intelligently the thoughts of John Rawls, Harsanyi, Nozick, Sen, etc.

        5 out of 5 stars A good introductory primer for political economy.......2000-08-12

        This is a good introductory book for political economy. This may or may not be as good as the same author's "Perspectives on Public Choice" but it does cover most issue areas in the Public Choice subdiscipline in the course of its sections. I think that this was the main coursebook for my first political economy class when I was in college: definitely, if you're going to buy one book on public choice, buy the other one (hopefully buy them both!!!) Then get some Mancur Olson too.... he's a lot of fun!

E-Marketing . . . Cybermarketing . . . the terms keep multiplying, just like the number of websites. Most marketers aren't succeeding. But a few are. The difference? It's a matter of using the "same old rules" in a totally new environment, one that's dynamic, immediate, and unforgiving. 5 out of 5 stars Two years old and still a classic.......2000-04-06

        Must admit I was hesitant after seeing the previous two reviews, but am a happy camper now.

        This is my bible for crafting emails and editing Web sites. And it's a great gift for friends just getting into e-marketing.

        Although two years old, the concepts haven't changed and the examples still apply.

        1 out of 5 stars I'm Very Disappointed........1999-02-25

        Like one of the readers said, "I bought this book because of the posted reviews." Unfortunately, it's well below my expectations. The author is a good writer, however, I don't think he has much experience with email writing. He used very little examples in the book and spent an entire chapter to define common Internet terms such as "Bit" and "Browser." It appeared to me that this book is put together without much experience with the Internet. Two other books: "Words that Sell" and "What's the Big Idea?" are much, much better. I'm returing CyberTalk for a refund.

        3 out of 5 stars This book is not focused, though it has some good stuff........1999-01-01

        In the preface, the authors say that they intend to write this book about "selling by email" (not about selling on the web). The intent of this book is not fully communicated by its title. So make sure you buy what you want to read.

        I do not find the chapters about "selling by email" particularly interesting and convincing, perhaps because it was not the reason I bought the book. It has a chapter in glossary format explaining what is "Browser", "Bit", "Byte", "Home page"..., things that need not to be explained in a book that already is too thin and has too much white space.

        The only serendipity is chapter 8 about "Banners" which is related to the web and has nothing to do with email. The authors give an insightful distinction between a banner and a link, and provide examples to improve the description of a banner. This book stays on my bookshelf because of this chapter.

        5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Approach For Creative Online Writing!.......1998-09-27

             Remember the old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words? How true it is. A good picture or graphic image can speak volumes. They can add a lot of appeal, class, and convey meaning through any Website. Words can be used to make an impact as well. In the business of online marketing the selection and use of good words, grammar, and sentence structure can result in a more fruitful online presence. Herschell Gordon Lewis and Jamie Murphy have written Cybertalk that Sells to provide us with some dynamic insight into how we can communicate more powerfully and successfully online.

        Book Description

        Gilboa and Schmeidler provide a new paradigm for modeling decision making under uncertainty. Case-based decision theory suggests that people make decisions by analogies to past cases: they tend to choose acts that performed well in the past in similar situations, and to avoid acts that performed poorly. The authors describe the general theory and its relationship to planning, repeated choice problems, inductive inference, and learning. They highlight its mathematical and philosophical foundations and compare it to expected utility theory as well as to rule-based systems.

        Download Description

        Gilboa and Schmeidler provide a new paradigm for modelling decision making under uncertainty. Unlike the classical theory of expected utility maximization, case-based decision theory does not assume that decision makers know the possible 'states of the world' or the outcomes, let alone the decision matrix attaching outcomes to act-state pairs. Case-based decision theory suggests that people make decisions by analogies to past cases: they tend to choose acts that performed well in the past in similar situations, and to avoid acts that performed poorly. It is an alternative to expected utility theory when both states of the world and probabilities are neither given in the problem nor can be easily constructed. The authors describe the general theory and its relationship to planning, repeated choice problems, inductive inference, and learning; they highlight its mathematical and philosophical foundations and compare it with expected utility theory as well as with rule-based systems.

        3 out of 5 stars No improvement over Keynes's analogical decision making.......2005-10-17

        Gilboa and Schmeidler(GS)put forth what they claim is a new approach to decision making under uncertainty(Keynesian Uncertainty and/or Ellsbergian Ambiguity).The Case-Based Decision(CBD) approach is based on the use of analogy,similarity and induction.Decision maker's choices are based on the degree of analogy(positive and negative) with past cases stored in their memory.Actions are implemented that worked well in the past.Actions that were judged not to have been successful in the past are avoided.CBD is thus self correcting over time since decision makers can learn from experience based on the recollection of past events stored in their memories.GS's basic model is composed of two parts-memory and similarity.These two parts could be described as the basis of all analogical reasoning,which is pattern recognition.The decision maker has stored in his memory a set of what GS call triplets.Each triplet is composed of a decision problem,an action,and an outcome.Each new problem the decision maker faces is dealt with by the use of an index ranking each feasible action from low to high.The index is a weighted sum of the outcomes that have occurred in the past whenever a particular action was chosen.The weight is determined by a similarity function that measures the similarity between the new problem(case) and all the other relevant past problems(cases).A number of different possible similarity functions are put forth.Every one of these functions is additive with respect to the content of the decision makers memory of all past cases.An entire chapter is devoted to presenting an axiomatic foundation for similarity functions. The major criticism of this book is their omission of the work done in this area by John Maynard Keynes in 1921 in chapter III and Part III of the A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP).GS confine their consideration of Keynes's earlier work in this area to the following one liner."It should be mentioned that similar ideas were also expressed in the economic literature by Keynes(1921),Selten( 1978),and Cross(1983)."(2001,p.33). Keynes didn't just express"similar ideas"in the TP,which is not part of the economic literature,although much of Keynes's analysis and modeling in the TP can be applied in economics.Starting in chapter XIX of the TP,Keynes constructs a formal technical analysis of analogy in terms of propositional functions .There are two basic parts to this analysis,past experience(GS's memory)and degree of resemblance(GS's similarity).Based on an analysis using his concept of 'generalization',Keynes arrives at conclusions and results that parallel most of the conclusions arrived at by GS.One severe point of disagreement that Keynes would express would be the GS concern that the similarity functions must be additive .Additivity for Keynes would be a special case that could be attained only in the limit.In general,similarity functions will be sub additive and/or qualitative. My recommendation is that this is an excellent book for those readers who have never read the TP.However,those readers who have already digested chapters III,XVIII-XXIII of the TP will gain little additional understanding of inductive reasoning using analogy, construed as pattern recognition based on degrees of similarity,from reading GS.

          Book Description

          Case-based reasoning (CBR) has received a great deal of attention in recent years and has established itself as a core methodology in the field of artificial intelligence. The key idea of CBR is to tackle new problems by referring to similar problems that have already been solved in the past. More precisely, CBR proceeds from individual experiences in the form of cases. The generalization beyond these experiences typically relies on a kind of regularity assumption demanding that 'similar problems have similar solutions'.

          Making use of different frameworks of approximate reasoning and reasoning under uncertainty, notably probabilistic and fuzzy set-based techniques, this book develops formal models of the above inference principle, which is fundamental to CBR. The case-based approximate reasoning methods thus obtained especially emphasize the heuristic nature of case-based inference and aspects of uncertainty in CBR. This way, the book contributes to a solid foundation of CBR which is grounded on formal concepts and techniques from the aforementioned fields. Besides, it establishes interesting relationships between CBR and approximate reasoning, which not only cast new light on existing methods but also enhance the development of novel approaches and hybrid systems.

          This books is suitable for researchers and practioners in the fields of artifical intelligence, knowledge engineering and knowledge-based systems.

            Description:
            We describe four broad characterizations of subjective probability calibration (overconfidence, conservatism, ecologically perfect calibration, and case-based judgment) and show how Random Support Theory (RST) can serve as a tool for representing, evaluating, and discriminating between these perspectives. We present five studies of probability judgment in a simulated stock market setting and analyse the calibration data in terms of RST parameters. The observed pattern of calibration varies with the outcome base rate and cue value diagnosticity, as predicted by case-based judgment. A similar pattern of calibration is found in real-world judgments of experts in various domains. Case-based RST-defined as RST with stable parameter values-provides a parsimonious account of the substantial changes in calibration performance observed across different judgment environments.

                      Book Description

                      Why is there no national health insurance in the United States of America? This question became popular again when President Bill Clinton's Health Security Plan of 1993 proved to be a failure. Throughout the twentieth century, every attempt to enact a national health insurance program failed. The majority of the working population is covered by private, employer-based health insurance, the elderly and welfare poor by the government programs Medicare and Medicaid of 1965, while a growing number of Americans remain uninsured.
                      This study focuses on two important decisions that have shaped American health care policy: the exclusion of national health insurance from the Social Security Act of 1935 and the shift of focus from a health insurance program for the working population to a hospital insurance program for the elderly and the welfare poor. Based on presidential archives and the papers of social security policymakers, this study examines the incremental strategy to achieve health insurance coverage for all Americans. The result is a compelling history of political compromise that will be of interest to both the scholars of the welfare state and the scholars of American ideology and exceptionalism.
