    Book Description

In the fall of 1999, New York Times education reporter Jacques Steinberg was given an unprecedented opportunity to observe the admissions process at prestigious Wesleyan University. Over the course of nearly a year, Steinberg accompanied admissions officer Ralph Figueroa on a tour to assess and recruit the most promising students in the country. The Gatekeepers follows a diverse group of prospective students as they compete for places in the nation's most elite colleges. The first book to reveal the college admission process in such behind-the-scenes detail, The Gatekeepers will be required reading for every parent of a high school-age child and for every student facing the arduous and anxious task of applying to college.

5 out of 5 stars Great information for non-college educated parents.......2007-04-07

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it most helpful. Having no experience with the college admissions process, my husband and I felt somewhat lost in preparing our children for what would be required and/or expected by top colleges. The book gives insight into many scenarios, the brightest, the challenged, those who haven't given their best effort...and those, like our children, who were first generation. I was encouraged to read that admissions counselors consider non-college educated parents in regard to a students lower SAT scores. Although our kids both fell well within the top 10% in class rankings with highly rigorous courses of study, their SAT scores were not as impressive as their peers (who all seemed to have college educated parents). With so much pressure to perform on the SATs we were initially alarmed that our kids wouldn't get into the universities of their choice. After reading through an admission counselor's thought process as he considered an application I felt more confident that our children would be afforded a fair hearing based on so much more than their test scores. I am deeply appreciative for Mr. Steinberg's success at giving a realistic look at the process and for Wesleyan's and the many students' willingness to allow a viewing into a private area of their lives. I recommend that parents read this early in their children's high school years and buy it as a gift for their high school counselors if they haven't yet read it.

    5 out of 5 stars Must Read!!!.......2007-01-13

If you have a child embarking upon the college admissions process and has his/her eyes on the most competitive colleges in the nation, read this book. those who think that private school kids get the same education as public school kids, read this book. If you thought only athletes are recruited, read this book. this book is well written and eye opening. go get it.

    5 out of 5 stars Compelling!.......2006-02-19

What a great book...The inside scoop on the hidden world of admissions. I've worked in an admissions office before (at a highly competitive school) and this was pretty much on target.

Steinberg's narrative style was enjoyable, making this a quick, easy read. The anecdotes make you wish the book would never end, really. I even cried at one part. I want to know where the students are now that were tracked through the book!

This would esp. be a good book for any rising junior in high school...

A couple quotes from "The Gatekeepers" I found quite inspiring...

--From a HS guidance counselor to one of her students re: the entire admissions process: "If they spent a month with you and rejected you then you could feel bad about yourself. They're only rejecting a bunch of pieces of paper, not you."

--From a student's application essay: "I have big plans, but I also have contingency plans. In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou's mother advised her to `hope for the best, be prepared for the worst, and you'll be ready for everything in between'."

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2005-10-16

As a former admission officer, I found the book to be quite honest and descript. Unveiling the process behind the ever-elusive curtain, it is a book for anyone who is truly interested in how a class is shaped on a College or University campus. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and was captivated at the stories of the students.

              Book Description

For many years, the menu of strategy courses at most schools has been relatively unchanged: typically, a capstone course has been followed by one or more electives on topics such as industry and competitor analysis, the management of technology, or mergers and acquisitions. CORPORATE STRATEGY breaks this mold. It is a completely new course whose design has been honed over six years of teaching at the Harvard Business School. It presents, for the first time, a single consistent framework for the analysis of corporate-level strategy. Based on the latest research in the resource-based view of the firm and organizational economics, it develops a rigorous approach to the many important issues surrounding the scope of the firm. Starting from the analysis of how valuable resources contribute to the competitive advantage of a single business, the book progresses through the analysis of scale, scope and vertical integration within an industry, to the treatment of diversification and the management of multibusiness firms. As such, it perfectly complements those required strategy courses that develop the notions of strategy as the internal consistency and external positioning of single business firms.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better written.......2003-04-18

This text is a brief overview of Corporate Strategy--more useful to someone who already knows the subject and needs a book to brush up on the material and "pull it all together." Concepts are not elaborated very well, forcing you to read passages twice. I also felt that sentences weren't structured in a very readable manner.

Corporate Strategy, A Resource-Based Approach, is just that. This book gives the reader, and more importantly, the user, either corporate managers, small business owners or business students, the tools needed to make the strategic decisions necessary to plan for future growth. The resources used for the book are from Harvard and Yale Business Schools, as well as other great institutions throughout the world. The authors documented the tacit knowledge from the most successful global business executives and strategic planners, and composed the ideas into this short, straightforward, easy to read book. The best information gained from this book is the discussion on decisions regarding a company's Resources, Strategic Business Units, and Structure, Systems and Processes. These core components are linked to a company's Vision, Goals and Objectives. From this structured foundation, the book discusses how to form a Coherent firm with Competitive Advantage, while maintaining the proper Control throughout the organization. This book teaches the essential areas necessary to develop future corporate executives, and the decisions needed to sustain a business into the next century.

The book has some very pretty designs in it. The brand of yarn used for the designs may not be available now as some years have passed since it was written. However, the book has conversion charts for two other brands of yarn. Some of the yarn she uses there aren't some of the colors available in the other yarns. It might be hard to use one of those other yarns and the designs would naturally be different than the pictures.

John J. Sweeney, president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O., makes a rallying cry for Americans to stop the thievery of corporations by joining unions. Wages, he argues, are shrinking due to inflation and as more and more corporations downsize, their profits, stock prices and salaries for principals shoot through the roof. Drawing on his experiences as a young boy attending labor union meetings with his bus driving father, Sweeney believes that a return to unions will give workers the support they need to negotiate higher wages, restore an economic balance, and revive a sense of community and cooperation that America has been sorely lacking.

                  Book Description

John J. Sweeney and the new leadership of the AFL-CIO are committing millions of dollars and thousands of organizers to the mobilization of working people all over the country. America Needs a Raise is Sweeney's manifesto. It is a blunt yet compassionate account of the dilemmas facing American workers of all kinds: high tech and low, immigrant and native born, blue collar and white. Sweeney targets the growing disparity between rich and poor, the decline in the standard of living of middle- and working-class Americans, the overwork and unemployment, the racial polarization and ethnic animosity, and the gnawing sense of powerlessness and uncertainty that afflicts us all. He indicts corporate America too for its " lean and mean " abdication of social responsibility. He offers a way of dealing with the realities of the global economy that is more effective and humane than the downsizing of America and the sacrifice of working people on the altar of international competitiveness. John Sweeney through David Kusnet have given us a new motivation to believe that Labor unions can make a difference in the quality of life for America's working class. The greed of corporations and individuls must be controled. As long as this greed is the driving force of our economy America will never be as great as it could be. America Needs a Raise is not just a title. It is the solution to most of the problems in our working class neighborhoods. John Sweeney's book, America Needs a Raise is full of facts and figurers, but is easy to read and understand. By understanding the value of workers acting collectively to acheive a goal through collective barginning, labor unions are shown to be the solution to the need for a more equal distribution of the wealth of our nation.

Cause Related Marketing, or CRM, is an increasingly popular corporate practice that seeks to tie a company or brand to a charitable effort. Think promotions promising a percentage of sales to specific nonprofits, or advertising touting particular philanthropic programs in addition to products or services, and you get the idea. At its best, CRM aids charities (raising awareness as well as cash), businesses (associating them with authentic social benefits), and consumers (providing ways to acquire products or services while simultaneously making charitable contributions). At its worst, the process rings hollow and may actually serve to hurt the companies involved. Hamish Pringle, former vice chairman of marketing for Saatchi & Saatchi, and Marjorie Thompson, current director of the company's Cause Connection, believe any firm that's sincere can use CRM.

In Brand Spirit, they explain the way a number of such campaigns--including the American Express Charge Against Hunger, Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade, and Reebok's Human Rights Now! Tour--were developed to assist relevant programs as well as enhance corporate image. Pringle and Thompson show through these and other detailed case studies how mutually beneficial programs are devised and deployed, and what they can achieve. "Commercial enterprises will continue to see real benefits in helping ensure a harmonious balance between the stronger and weaker in society," they write, "and in structuring themselves to deliver the optimum blend of self-interested altruism to their communities." Their subsequent proposal is a solid blueprint for companies of all types and sizes that wish to demonstrate actively a genuine commitment to the concept of corporate social responsibility. --Howard Rothman.

                  Book Description

The only guide to understanding and making the most of one of the hottest trends in branding today

Nothing builds brand loyalty among today's increasingly skeptical, hard-to-please consumers like a proven commitment to a worthy cause on the part of a company. Known as Cause Related Marketing (CRM), this approach to branding has gained a great deal of momentum over the past decade, thanks, in no small part, to such recent, notable examples as McDonald's commitment to saving the rain forests and BMW's breast cancer fund-raising initiatives. Now, in the first book to explore the business benefits of CRM and its positive and negative impacts on business strategy, two experts explain the concept and fundamental principles of CRM and its place within the contemporary discourse on branding. And, with the help of numerous, fascinating, and instructive case studies, they demonstrate how marketers can harness the power of CRM to position and enhance customer loyalty to a brand, product, or service.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!.......2006-03-25

In the age of huge, impersonal corporations, it's great to see that businesses can actually thrive by giving something back to the communities they serve. I can't think of a better way to build a brand, and loyalty for that brand, than through Cause Related Marketing.

This is must reading for anyone who runs a business!

5 out of 5 stars Doing Well by Doing Good.......2001-04-02

This book is an eye-opener! Pringle and Thompson have given us a how-to manual on the art and science of cause related marketing. Solidly researched and documented, engagingly written, and replete with case studies from both sides of the Atlantic, Brand Spirit makes a convincing case for the efficacy and the ethics of doing well by doing good. No serious marketing practitioner can afford to remain uninformed about the cogent argument the book advances.

If you aren't moved to get cause-related marketing into your organisation you have ice flowing through your veins. Pringle and Thomson do an convincing job of showing the benefits and fun of having a brand with spirit. With all the lip service being paid to corporate values, Brand Spirit shows companies how to live them. Well done.

I find this book very easy to read and absorb. The ideas are practical and may very well deserve more attention. Along the lines of the theory of the Invisible hand, I think the world/society in general will be a better place if companies start thinking and implementing Cause Related Marketing. Also, as the authors relate both American and Uk case studies, it makes the book even more insightful on the subject of marketing in the international arena. Definately a good introductory reading on the subject matter.

                    Book Description

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the joint International Workshops on Trading Agent Design and Analysis, TADA 2006, and on Agent Mediated Electronic Commerce, AMEC VIII 2006, held in Hakodate, Japan, in May 2006 as an associated event of AAMAS 2006, the 5th International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems.

The 17 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from the presentations made at the workshop and include papers from the annual TAC tournament whose purpose is to stimulate research in trading agents and market mechanisms by providing a platform for agents competing in well-defined market scenarios. The papers address a mix of both theoretical and practical issues in trading agent design and technologies, theoretical and empirical evaluation of strategies in complex trading scenarios as well as mechanism design. Also covered are issues of agent-mediated electronic commerce ranging from the design of electronic marketplaces and efficient protocols to behavioral aspects of agents operating in such environments.

                        Book Description

Decisions, Games and Markets is designed to stimulate new developments in decision theory, game theory and general equilibrium theory, as well as in their applications to economics. The book is divided into three parts - Decision Theory, Game Theory, and the Theory of Markets. Though its orientation is primarily methodological, some articles are more applied. The consistent use of formal analysis and methodological individualism constitutes the unifying theme of the book. Decisions, Games and Markets will be of considerable interest to both students and teachers of microeconomics and game and decision theory.

                          Book Description

Two crucial aspects of economic reality are uncertainty and dynamics. In this book, new models and techniques are developed to analyse economic dynamics in an uncertain environment. In the first part, investment decisions of firms are analysed in a framework where imperfect information regarding the investment's profitability is obtained randomly over time. In the second part, a new class of cooperative games, spillover games, is developed and applied to a particular investment problem under uncertainty: mergers. In the third part, the effect of bounded rationality on market evolution is analysed for oligopolistic competition and incomplete financial markets.

                            Description:
In this paper the problem of developing bidding strategies for the participants of dynamic oligopolistic electricity markets is studied. Attention is given to strategic bidding of load serving entities (LSE) in these markets. We model oligopolistic electricity markets as non-linear dynamical systems and use discrete-time Nash bidding strategies. We assume a Cournot model for our game, where the LSEs decide on demand quantities and the market price is the marginal cost of producing electricity. Attention is given to a problem, where the objective functions are quadratic in the deviations of trajectories from desired trajectories and quadratic in the control deviations from the nominal controls. It is assumed that each power marketer can estimate his/her competitors' benefit function coefficients. The optimal bidding strategies are developed mathematically using dynamic game theory. We deal with games that are non-linear in the state equations. We linearize these equations for complex non-linear oligopolistic electricity multi-markets and use discrete-time Nash strategies. We show that the actual dynamic excursions from the operating point where we linearize are small so that the linearization is valid. The developed algorithm is applied to an IEEE 14-bus power system. We show that the LSEs' expected profits are higher for our method than those for other methods in the literature (F. Wen, A.K. David, Optimal bidding strategies and modeling of imperfect information among competitive generators. IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, Vol. 16, No. 1, pp.15-21, Feb. 2001.

We consider a simple game-theoretical model in which an electricity retailer and a network owner offer incentives to consumers to shift load from a peak period to an off-peak period. Using a simple example, we compare the market outcomes from collusion with those from the equilibrium of a non-cooperative game and examine the behaviour in this game when it is repeated in a situation in which agents have imperfect information.

                                  Description:
A market-based scheduling mechanism allocates resources indexed by time to alternative uses based on the bids of participating agents. Agents are typically interested in multiple time slots of the schedulable resource, with value determined by the earliest deadline by which they can complete their corresponding tasks. Despite the strong complementarities among slots induced by such preferences, it is often infeasible to deploy a mechanism that coordinates allocation across all time slots. We explore the case of separate, simultaneous markets for individual time slots, and the strategic problem it poses for bidding agents. Investigation of the straightforward bidding policy and its variants indicates that the efficacy of particular strategies depends critically on preferences and strategies of other agents, and that the strategy space is far too complex to yield to general game-theoretic analysis. For particular environments, however, it is often possible to derive constrained equilibria through evolutionary search methods.

                                    Description:
Reliable and efficient operation of deregulated electricity markets requires supply and demand elasticity. This paper presents incentive control of spinning reserves in electricity multi-markets using game theory. Interruptible load contracts (ILC) could reduce the amount of spinning reserve requirements during system contingencies such as transmission congestion. It is shown that the power utilities (PU) with ILC could increase their benefits in time-separated energy and spinning reserves markets (e.g., inter-temporal market gaming among day-ahead, hour-ahead and real-time markets).
