In this general history of the development of rockets and missiles, Chun traces the technology that made "attack from beyond the horizon" possible. A former missile launch officer, he focuses not only on the development and employment of the ballistic missile--from early German V-2 use to today--but on their subsequent impact on national strategies, doctrine, force structure, and politics. The development of ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads had a profound impact on superpower rivalries and structured international relations for decades. The advent of the ballistic missile changed the way nations believed war was to be fought in the future. Ballistic missiles (land based and submarine-launched) are now global in scope. Accordingly, the book covers Russia, China, North Korea, South Asia, and the Middle East. It details actual use in combat, as well as current countermeasures and future missile defense systems. The ballistic missile is still a relevant weapon system. Advancements in miniaturization, spread of technology, availability of weapons of mass destruction, desire to gain strategic advantage among rivals, and other concerns have stimulated the growth of interested parties that either have or are able to build ballistic missiles. Tracing the development and issues regarding such missiles serves as a primer on these complex systems, and explains why international parties are still concerned about their proliferation.

Chun better study some basic physics........2007-08-10

By page 17 one will already be frustrated by many misleading sentences. Examples: Chun states multiple times that the ICBM escapes earth's gravity (Page 2, Page 6). On Page 17 he states "The earth's rotation pulls an object such as a missile toward the center of the planet." Hmmmmmm.

If the technical content of the book is so off, how does one know if the historical and other aspects of the book are accurate?

While several dedicated facilities for space surveillance are in operation around the world, Australia s Over-The-Horizon Radar (OTHR) network has some potential for this role. The OTHR operates in the HF band and is constrained by the propagation effects of the ionosphere. A spherically stratified ionospheric model and a model for a nominal OTHR antenna are developed that allow calculation of path propagation, power distribution, and clutter returns. A software-based radar receiver processing system is modeled to determine detection probabilities and the minimum detectable radar cross-section of targets in typical low earth orbit (LEO) trajectories. The high clutter power levels, coupled with long target ranges and high velocities, mean that range-Doppler tradeoffs have a great impact on the resulting detection capabilities. While the system as modeled has the potential to provide some coverage for LEO targets, operational constraints mean the necessary conditions for detection of space targets would rarely be met while the system is involved in traditional OTHR tasking. Further, the long wavelengths and large antenna beams mean the accuracy of any positioning information is low. The Australian Defence Force is investigating the development of a space surveillance system. The methodology is a key issue in the development of any complex system and there is currently no standard or widely used methodology in the realm of multiagent systems. MaSE covers the entire software lifecycle, starting from an initial prose specification, and creating a set of formal design documents in a graphical style based on a formal syntax. The final product of MaSE is a diagram describing the deployment of a system of intelligent agents that communicate through structured conversations. MaSE was created with the mention of being supported by an automated design tool. The tool built to support MaSE, agent Tool, is a multiagent system development tool for designing and synthesizing complex multiagent systems.

Traditionally, the cost of conducting cancer clinical trials has been supported by a combination of research sponsors, institutions, and third-party payers. However, health insurers and other payers are increasingly reluctant to reimburse for direct patient care provided as part of a clinical trial. These policies--driven in part by a perception that patients enrolled in trials incur substantial additional costs--might impede efforts to enroll patients in clinical trials. Yet there is little evidence regarding the costs of treating patients in clinical trials.
