ABOUT THE TEST
Who Takes the Test and What is it Used for??
Any American secondary school student with English as a second language or limited English proficiency who has had at least two years of high school study in the United States can take this exam.
The English Language Proficiency Test is used to measure your reading and listening skills in English. Unlike English test that focus on grammar and language structure, the ELPT uses everyday-life examples to test a student's ability to function in an English-speaking environment. The test is used by colleges and universities as an indicator of a student's ability to use English in life situations. It can also be used as a measure for academic placement. Students entering the workforce can use the ELPT to demonstrate their ability to understand written and spoken English.
Who Administers the Test?
The ELPT is developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The questions for the ELPT are developed by language specialists who follow standardized procedures which ensure a high quality of work. All questions are reviewed by many people, revised as necessary, and then are administered in trial test situations, before being compiled into a test format. According to ETS, the tests are then reviewed, using specific procedures, to ensure that they are free from cultural bias and that they will properly measure student's knowledge.
When Should the ELPT Be Taken?
The ELPT should be taken by American high school students who have completed two to four ears of training in an English as a Second Language program or an English enrichment course. The examination should be taken prior to graduation from high school.
When and Where is the Test Given?
The ELPT is administered twice a year, once at SAT test centers and once at participating high schools. The first test administration date is in November at SAT test centers. The second administration date is in April at participating high schools.
To receive information on upcoming administrations of the exam, consult the publication Taking the SAT II: Subject Tests, which can be obtained from your guidance counselor or by contacting:

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
What Do I Study First?
Before you do anything else, you should take the first practice test which appears after the two review sections. After you complete this test, you will be able to determine what areas are causing you difficulty and should be studied first, so that you can strengthen your weaknesses.
After you have thoroughly studied the areas with which you are having problems, you may want to retake Test 1 to gauge your improvement in these areas. When you feel comfortable with the areas which have previously caused you difficulty, you should then begin reviewing and preparing for each section of the ELPT.
When should I start studying?
It is never too early to start studying for the ELPT, the earlier the better. You should start studying as soon as possible so that you will be able to learn more. Make sure you take the first practice test before you start studying can help you strengthen your problem areas before you run out of time to study. Last minute studying and cramming is not an efficient way to study and does not allow you to learn the material which you will need to know for the exam.
How else can I improve my English speaking and writing skills while preparing for the test?
In addition to using Test 1 to determine your problem areas, make sure you study all of the reviews. The reviews will cover the information you will need to know for the exam. You should also test yourself by completing as many of the practice tests as you possibly can.
Besides using this book, there is one way you can familiarize yourself with written English - READ! Reading will help you improve your writing skills because you will have become acquainted with correct structure and phrasing in written English. You should read newspaper and magazine articles and advertisements. Read the college admissions material and college catalogs of the schools to which you are applying. You should also read books of interest to you. Just make sure you read, read, READ!

Customer Reviews:
Silly advice, incoherent ramble, uninspiring, plain awful.......2005-10-28
This is like a tastless and overcooked minestrone soup (it gives you gas and stomach cramps, but no nutrients or energy), a hodge-podge mix of simple, often silly little issues and ideas, anything authors could connect with negotiation, no matter how losely!
Video, voice mail, checking your counterpart's horoscope (honest!), furniture, fax machine, sex, smoke, music, lawyers, laptop computers (all actual subtitles),you name it, it is all here, in this incoherent, silly mess. Some stuff is even repeated verbatim on various pages! A double insult!
Example #1: under sources of power, the authors list only 3: power(?), information and time. And that takes half a page and that is that. Hardly unorthodox stuff, highly superficial. Hey, power as a source of power, brilliant!
Example #2: Food (subtitle) Hunger is a very primal motivator. ... In a sales contest, the losers take the winners out for dinner. The winners eat steak, the losers eat beans.
Firstly, when something is primal, how can it be "very". It is like saying "this book is very first on the list of titles to be avoided!"
Secondly, now I know why there is so much hot stinky air in many negotiations! Those losers ate beans ...
Verdict: A blatant and transparent attempt to capitalise on the popularity of Guerilla Marketing books. I don't want to waste more of my, and more importantly, your precious time reviewing this mess. Did I waste my money buying this? I did. And I am not happy! I even tried selling this book on e-bay, but nobody wanted it. Smart bidders. Avoid like a bird flu.
Guerrillas always speak the truth.......2003-06-12
Guerrilla Negotiating provides a quality insight into effective negotiating tactics. The author teaches and advocates the following quality virtues: empathy, listening, fairness, and compassion. The virtues build upon these core belief system as a foundation for guerilla negotiation. This philosophy of doing business is based upon time, energy, and imagation. It is called philosophy because the guerrilla seeks truth and speaks the truth. Setting truth as the highest aspiration allowing the guerrilla access to information before the masses which can be used for gain.
The guerrilla improves proficiency in the areas of word association, using an active voice, qualifiers, amplifiers, softeners, minimizers, directors, authority builders, trace words and phrases, imagination triggers, option degenerators, spotlight phrases, emotive directors, responsibility directors, presuppositions, comparitives, and linkages. The author emphasize the importance of good communication skills and how power words can change mental understanding of concept and context. The author differs communication into two styles: One for the internal listener and one for the external listener.
Probably the best part of the book was a chapter titled, "How to win on price". Guerrillas know how their customer feels about their prices. Guerrillas know happy customers know what value they receive for a price. For instance, buyers don't stay up all night worrying how much they paid, instead, they worry what they bought won't do the job. Buyers want performance and Sellers want profit. Guerrillas know that this cycle must be maintained for their business to survive. Guerrilas try to avoid negotiating on price. I think price negotiating is a lossing game because often times the seller does know when to walk away and often they get caught in continual price battles and in some cases forced to accept lower prices.
So back to communication, the author suggest 10 ways to improve your presentation: 1. Discuss specific benefits your counterpart gains 2. Show exclusive superior features and don't waste your time on the basics. 3. Project that you are reliability and dependable. 4. Position what you have to offer as the right price 5. Demostrate the time is right to decide no you now. 6. Use proof statements to support your position 7. Support your case with visual aid (visuals and discussion increase memory retention) 8. Present and emotional appeal. 9. Dramatize your stories 10. Include a demostration.
Negotiating primer....not much more........2002-09-26
Being in the professional negotiation game, I thoroughly enjoy reading books which describe and tutor the subject. Although the current market is lousy with negotiating treatises, there are a few that stand out. Fisher and Ury's GETTING TO YES seems to be my favorite, one I return to time and again. However, I believe it healthly to step outside conventional wisdom and somewhat static norms to expand one's knowledge base. Although I had no idea of the content, quality or readability of GUERRILLA NEGOTIATING, I took a flyer on it as it "looked" like it might be of some interest.
Authors Levinson, Smith and Wilson have been working together for some time now promoting the "Guerrilla" books, seminars, tapes, etc. and have been quite successful, commercially. Although this is my first "Guerilla" book, I know of their successes and common acceptance within many business circles. However, I don't judge a book or theory based on the opinions of others so, of course, I had to buy this book to determine if it had the content described in the hype.
The easy answer is that yes, indeed, this book contains the basics of negotiation theory and time-tested schemes and strategies. The problem I had with GUERRILLA NEGOTIATING was its complete lack of fluidity and cogence. Its almost as though the authors "bulleted" the book and a ghost writer took their words verbatim without the benefit of explanatory offsets. This book does very little to describe complex situations with offered solutions and options. Remember, when reading a non-fiction book AND if one is a serious reader of non-fiction, the reader will be looking for that ONE gem within the book to add to his/her repretoire. This book is basic in nature and lacked the ability to truly explain the negotiating process. Without an explanation of the framework and processes, a new negotiatior will be totally lost. And, if one is attempting to put to work the Guerrilla tactics, they will most likely present their case in a staggered, illogical, and perhaps, unprofessional manner as the authors failed to bring together the process of "beginning-to-end." This is my main gripe about the book.
To say that the book is not "Guerrilla" in nature would be a dramatic misstatement. The authors present a variety of tactics to move negotiations along including, well, a water gun. Yep, a water gun. The authors posit that if negotiations are bogged down or if you are having a difficult time moving a decisionmaker, bring a water gun to the table and threaten (or begin) to shoot him. Now, in a sales setting and depending on the sophistication of the other party, this "might" work. In a professional setting, this is tantamount to death. Lack of common sense given the facts and circumstances of a particular situation can be the death knell of a pending transaction.
Nevertheless, I cannot say this is a bad book. The book presents the materials necessary for the new negotiatior and, even some level of information for the seasoned negotiator. It is interesting that once a negotiator establishes a style, he/she just looks for ways to enhance that style. This book could fill that role.
Bottom line....if you're new to negotiating, this book will provide "glimpse-level" insight into the process. Don't look for the proverbial outline, its not there. The book doesn't present the reader with a process toward successful negotiations or even negotiation theory for that matter. On the other hand, the book does present the reader with a trove of summarized negotiating nuggets that will most likely be beneficial to many initiates. Further, the book provides summary resource materials.
CONTENT = great; READABILITY = poor.
everyone in business should be forced to read this book.......2002-06-04
The overall theme of the book is excellent. Negotiations are not a zero sum, winner take all exercise. A truly successful negotiation is one in which both (or all ) parties leave satisfied and in better shape as a result of the agreement than they would be without it. Too many people in the business world take the old track and think that they need to win, and that everyone else must lose, a mindset that is distructive for themselves, customers, suppliers and anyone else they do business with. That is why this book is a must read. It also supplies examples for increasing the size of the pie before dividing it, ways to recognize predatory negotiators, how to defend against their strategy, and most importantly what YOU need to do to prepare for and conduct a successful negotiation.
Guerrilla's are the way to go!.......2001-01-16
I picked up this book because I work in the automotive sales industry, and I have been very impressed with everything that is contained in its quick-to-read pages. It is filled with ideas for anyone who is ever in any type of sales or negotiating situations, which is really everyone. The anecdotes are fun to read and filled with practical ideas, and the insights into human psychology are astounding. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE!!

Speed to Market is a must-read, easy read........2000-10-26
It's a pleasure reading a book that uses everyday language and minimizes the use of trendy buzz-words. The seven chapters are divided logically and go from the general to the specific. This allows the reader to capture the essence of the message without reading long passages before getting to a point. The reader can visualize his own job shop and pick and choose which solutions are pertinent.
Mr. Bozzone's experience and knowledge are evident throughout the book. His viewpoint brings a dimension and a dynamic quality which allows the reader to benefit from the many "real-life" examples peppered throughout the pages. The many models and illustrations help the reader understand the concepts and operational strategies that improve job shop performance.
From a training perspective, Speed to Market provides a sound basis for developing programs that would help people at all levels to understand the intricacies of managing a job shop. The book is an excellent tool for constructing a curriculum that would benefit experienced managers who need to re-think their current situation, as well as people who are new to the job shop environment.
It is clear that owner-operators and managers of job shops would be well served by having their people understand and use the concepts and information presented in this book.
Speed to Market is a "must-read". Speed to Market is an "easy read". Speed to Market should be on your bookshelf! Speed to Market should be on your bookshelf!

A gem...dubfounding in it's Practicality.......2000-10-26
Speed to Market by Vincent Bozzone is one of those books that is dumbfounding in its practicality. It makes you wonder why more how-to books aren't written this way.
Speed to Market is a refreshing and unique book on "how to cut lead time and increase profits in job shops and custom manufacturing environments." Not only is this one of the few books available on this heretofore ignored topic, it is written as a step-by-step manual for designing and running a profitable job shop, incorporating detailed structure and process elements as they relate to the bottom-line. Actual client studies help make this book even more pragmatic.
Once you read this book, you realize that Vince Bozzone really is a rare expert in job shops and process improvement design.

Book Description
Business owners, consultants, free-lancers, and other entrepreneurs are all looking for easy-to-implement, cost-efficient ways to go up against the big guys. They can now get tips from an expert -- Debra Koontz Traverso -- an entrepreneur herself who coaches others to success. This book gives them a powerful equalizer for winning business that would traditionally go to players with bigger staffs and established reputations.
Despite the splash created by big budget ad campaigns, the fact remains -- big business can't always do the job. Its Achilles heel? One-size-fits-all service coupled with often inexpert sales help. Outsmarting Goliath helps small businesses defeat larger competitors.
This book shows how a single phone call, a cleverly crafted letter, an impressive catalog, a winning ad, or a skillfully prepared face-to-face presentation can influence customers to abandon big brand name products and services and embrace small business products and services that better address their needs. With these proven how-to strategies, small upstarts will capture more clients and challenge the Goliaths!
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2001-04-24
Debra Koontz Traverso presents a compilation of tips telling the entrepreneur or owner of a small business how to compete with established companies as well as other start-ups. Traverso includes a few personal examples, although this is mostly a how-to guidebook. Much of the advice may seem familiar to those who have read similar books or attended small business workshops, but Traverso does manage to throw in a few pointers that make you stop and think. For example: Stand up while you talk on the phone - it will increase your energy level. (Try it: It really works!) In addition, the book offers guidance on creating the right image, partnering with outsiders and family members, making the most out of mundane daily activities and marketing on a limited budget. Top executives may want to skim this to learn how start-ups and small businesses are striving to compete with them, but we [...] recommend this book primarily to entrepreneurs and small business owners who don't want to stay small forever.
Big bang for the buck.......2000-10-25
This book has gems on every page. Lots of practical tips and tools that can be put to immediate use. Plus it's a great, quick read. Light, tight, bright, and useful; full of great examples. Traverso sure knows her stuff.
A complete guide to small business image development.......2000-07-21
"Some entrepreneurs view their smallness as such a negative thing that they hardly make an effort to gain lucrative corporate clients. But even if yours is a one-employee home-based business, you can make it appear larger and give big firms confidence in your ability to do the job, according to (the author and this book). It's all a matter of image. . . (the book) is replete with instructions for self-assessment to determine your current business image and how to enlarge that image. . . . . In an easily read style, 'Outsmarting Goliath' is a complete guide to small business image development." --Carol Celeste, The Network Journal
Amazing Insight!.......2000-06-04
"The author's amazing insight into the needs of independent merchants in this time of accelerating change in the market place is remarkable. Suggestions for achieving performance and a more competitive rivalry with mammoth companies are many and valuable. This is not just a good read, but a handbook for coping." --Harold E. Hicks, The Book Shop, Inc.
Wish I had sooner.......2000-05-17
This book has many great ideas for the small business person that I wish I had before I started my business. For example, just how to pick a name for the company or how to look like a big company without spending a fortune. The book provides examples from people who have done it and adds credibility to the content. I recommend for all businesses but especially fo the smaller business and one person operations.

She is also an adjunct professor at Harvard University where she lectures on communications and crisis management. Previously, she worked as a reporter, editor, and public relations specialist.
Don Taylor, co-author of Up Against the Wal-Marts
This book has it all. Common sense ideas you can use right now, technology tips for the future, and an easy-to-read, motivating style. Outsmarting Goliath is a must-read for every small business owner who doesn't want to stay small.
comments: I have played a lot of sports going through school and each of my coaches at all levels have always stressed fundamentals and then gone on to teach advanced theories and plays . In reading Outsmarting Goliath I am struck with the degree to which the author has gone to stress the fundamentals of a healthy small business, and then moved on to add tremendously helpful, simple and yet sophistocated ideas. Bartering! What a great idea I would have never thought of. I bartered to get a new phone system with voice mail and it cost me less than 1/3 of the purchase price, and there was no tax! Her down to earth and sometimes funny anecdotal accounts of small business owners who have tripped or succeeded have provided me with a treasure trove of wonderful tips and ideas, some of which I have already implemented. I will add more over time.

Book Description
The Historian's Wizard of Oz synthesizes four decades of scholarly interpretations of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel as an allegory of the Gilded Age political economy and a comment on the gold standard. The heart of the book is an annotated version of The Wizard of Oz that highlights the possible political and monetary symbolism in the book by relating characters, settings, and incidents in it to the historical events and figures of the 1890s, the decade in which Baum wrote his story. Dighe simultaneously values the leading political interpretations of Oz as useful and creative teaching tools, and consolidates them in a sympathetic fashion; yet he rejects the commonly held, and by now well-debunked, view that those interpretations reflect Baum's likely motivations in writing the book. The result is a unique way for readers to acquaint themselves with a classic of children's literature that is a bit different and darker than the better-known film version. Students of history and economics will find two great stories: the dramatic rise and fall of monetary populism and William Jennings Bryan and the original rendering of a childhood story that they know and love. This study draws on several worthy versions of the Oz-as-Populist-parable thesis, but it also separates the reading of Baum's book in this manner from Baum's original intentions. Despite an incongruence with Baum's intent, reading the story as a parable continues to provide a remarkable window into the historical events of the 1890s and, thus, constitutes a tremendous teaching tool for historians, economists, and political scientists. Dighe also includes a primer on gold, silver, and the American monetary system, as well as a brief history of the Populist movement.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Classroom Source.......2006-08-13
Ranjit S. Dighe's coverage of Baum's Wizard of Oz as an allegory is well designed as a teaching source for Populism.
I found his chapter on the historical background of this period very helpful in understanding this complicated period. More importantly, the chapter that includes the original story with annotations that identify the symbolism is exactly what a researcher is looking for. References to Littlefield's interpretation and Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech makes this book a complete source for introducing this parable to history or economic students.

The 1, 2, 3's of treatment Planning.......2007-09-05
This is a real helpful book to have in the human services field especially, now with all the changes that are occuring. I would highly recommend it, not only for therapist, but also any other person who works closely with clients.
Practical Support Par Excellence.......2007-05-14
As a Graduate level student not yet in an internship with access to professional documentation formats, this is a lifesaver. Ms. Johnson has provided solid formats also for some short-term work topics that can be adapted to a wide variety of approaches and styles. I thank her and you for providing this service.
Somewhat Disappointed!.......2007-03-22
This book was not as helpful as I thought it would be. It does not do what the title suggests. 1-2-3s of Treatment Planning suggests that it explains how to do treatment plans. At least, that is what I thought. It does not explain how to do treatment plans. It just has a lot of information, somewhat irrelevant for me.
Clinical Guide for Therapists.......2006-11-11
Excellent book for therapists who need intervention ideas and documentation guide as well.
Incredible Resource.......2006-08-13
This book is priceless in my eyes. It has earned its price countless number of times. This book includes everything from Psychoeducation handouts, treatment plan information, assessment, administrative paperwork and much more. I have used this book on a daily basis in my clinical practice and continue to refer to it regularly. The amount of work put into this book is enormous and I appreciate every bit of it. Thank you Sharon and i look forward to more workbooks, etc . Im sure anything you create will be magnificent.
Highly, highly, highly recommended.

Book Description
As managed care companies gain increasing control over the mental health care market, many psychiatrists not under contract with a managed care plan have been excluded from significant numbers of potential patients. As a result, psychiatrists must pay more attention than ever before to practice management and other business-related issues. The Psychiatrist's Guide to Practice Management provides psychiatrists with important advice on how to make their practice capable of entering agreements with managed care organizations. This important guide identifies key areas (including financial, regulatory, promotional, administrative, and geographic issues) that must be considered in order to adapt the practice to make it more appealing to managed care companies. An additional chapter covers physician networks and alliances that compete directly against managed care organizations. It also provides crucial advice for psychiatrists who wish to develop a private practice based on traditional fee-for-service and private pay plans.
By using this handy guide, psychiatrists can build a thriving practice inside or outside the managed mental health care system.

Customer Reviews:
Good overview and basic resource........2000-11-27
I bought this book for a presentation in a graduate level class regarding the role of managed care in the provision of mental health services. This book provided a good starting place for understanding the history of managed mental health care, ethical issues in managed mental health care, and the basic managed health care system in the US. If you want a basic, easy-to-read overview, this is your book. If you already have an understanding of the basics and want a more detailed analysis of managed mental health care, you may use this book as a starting place for your research. For the price, this book is a useful reference.
