5 out of 5 stars This 2003 CLEP Official Study Guide has a lot of substance! .......2007-04-20

Though only used copies of this CLEP Official Study Guide are sold it still has a lot of substance. If you have ever done IT or worked as a secretary in an office before, than the knowledge you gained there plus the review in this guide for the CLEP Info Systems and Computer Applications exam should be more than enough to get a passing score on that CLEP test. For other CLEP exams this book can be used to supplement other study guides such as CLEP History of the United States I (REA)- The Best Test Prep for the CLEP Exam (Test Preps) and CLEP History of the United States II (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the CLEP (Test Preps). This is an excellent resource for sample questions for all the CLEP exams. Whether or not the information in thie CLEP Official Study Guide 2003 Edition will be enough to help you pass any particular CLEP test depends on your prior backround knowledge of the material being tested in the corresponding CLEP test.

1 out of 5 stars Other books are better!.......2003-05-14

While it is true that this book does contain some sample questions, so do other books available on Amazon. Several other books are much, much better than this one. The sample computer test information is free at collegeboard.com. If you are well versed in your area of study, then this book may help with sample questions.

However, if you need to study and can not afford to waste money with every clep book, that this is the wrong book for you.

If you have limited funds, and want a better study guide, purchase "Cracking the Clep" Princeton Review. You get alot more information for your money.

Other books that are better than this one are the Comex books and the study books from REA.

All of these books are available on Amazon, and will do you better than this book. If you can afford to buy every book, and need a comfort zone, than by all means, get this one too.

Just don't expect any of the questions in this book to actually be on the test. They won't. You need to either know or learn the concepts that the questions represent.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless CD - Why Did They Bother?.......2003-02-22

While this book does a good job of covering the questions and subject matter of the 34 CLEP examinations, the fact that the administration of the exam is now computer-based creates a desire for practice experience that simulates the actual test environment. Students who select this book expecting that the accompanying CD-ROM will include such simulated practice exams will be in for a major disappointment, however, because the CD contains little more than a canned orientation to the computer interface. The publishers don't help much by adding a somewhat vague description of the CD's content in the text; and on the actual CD there are menus that go through subject areas and subject exam titles, but they all lead to the same generic tutorial that has nothing to do with the subject content!! It's like you're being conned. For the 2004 edition, the College Board should make a simple choice: omit the CD (and drop the price of the book) or put real practice exams on it.

                      3 out of 5 stars CLEP 2003.......2003-01-07

I found this CLEP guide to be somewhat helpful. One good point is that it prepared me for the actual test format. The CD is not very useful - it basically just shows you how to navigate the computer-based CLEP exam.

                      3 out of 5 stars CD was a disappointment.......2002-12-04

While the tests appear to be comprehensive in the book, the CD was a total disappointment. There are no sample questions on the CD at all, only a tutorial for taking a multiple choice test on the computer.

Another disappointment was the lack of relation between the results on the practice tests and what is necessary to pass the tests. While the book has shown me a couple of areas I need to study, I don't feel it is preparing me to take the tests.

                      Wish me luck!!

In a democracy, the problem of fair division of goods is fundamental. It is, for example, what's lurking behind contemporary discussions of affirmative action, divorce law, and even of Medicare and Social Security. Its flip-side problem--burden-sharing--which is implicated in such issues as taxation and the draft, is likewise central. The authors, one a political scientist, the other a mathematician, start with an analysis of the well-known cake-cutting paradigm of "I cut, you choose" and gradually soup it up into a model capable of accommodating situations in which there are more than two parties, or more than one good. They emphasize division procedures that are not only proportional (that give each of n claimants a 1/n share of the good), but that also have the psychological property of being "envy-free"; that is, producing allocations in which each participant thinks (often wrongly, obviously) that he received the largest portion.

                      Book Description

Cutting a cake, dividing up the property in an estate, determining the borders in an international dispute--such problems of fair division are ubiquitous. Fair Division treats all these problems and many more through a rigorous analysis of the well-known cake-cutting procedure.

Steven Brams and Alan Taylor accomplish something quite interesting and worth paying attention to. They move concepts traditionally treated in policy debate and law with simple hit-or-miss human judgment and discretion into concrete analyzable mathematical processes. In the more than ten years that I've worked on the mathematics of child support, I have not yet been so convincing that such a transformation from subjective into objective is possible. Let the games continue!

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource, easily read.......2000-07-25

This was easily the book I referred to most in my Master's paper on fair division. It covers a lot of topics, including envy-free and equitable division, fair division by auctions, and fair division by elections. The authors devote a chapter to their favorite method, the so-called "combined procedure" that is equitable, envy-free, and Pareto-optimal for two players and would be invaluable to any divorce lawyer.

For those accustomed to reading mathematics or economics, this book is readable. For the layperson, it might be a little bit too technical in spots. While it has many practical examples, it isn't really a fair division manual for the do-it-yourselfer. But it's as close as you're going to get, for now.

                      Book Description

This "Six Sigma" book is at once a novel with a very human storyline, and a straight-forward, easy-to-read textbook. The novel is a creative, semi-autobiographical work which takes the reader through a six sigma implementation process filled with realistic, and perhaps familiar, work situations and characters. The textbook explains in easy-to-understand terms, the technical principles and strategies behind six sigma-level achievement and performance. It includes a quick-reference Q&A section, as well as a glossary of six sigma and other statistical terminology.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for the Experienced.......2006-11-06

"Six Sigma: Understanding the Concept, Implications and Challenges" is a great book for those experienced using the Six Sigma methodology. It is not a statistical tools reference book, but is classic in its masterful description of how to successfully deploy Six Sigma. The historical content in the second half of the book is valuable as well. The book even tackles the "1.5 sigma shift" contoversy. A very worthwhile read for Black Belts and Master Black Belts who have experienced the struggles of attempting to implement Six Sigma.

Ok, so every now and then I ignore what may be a helpful book review, and get burned. After reading this book, I wish that I had heeded the advice of others posted here. This book will be of little value to anyone looking for serious info concerning six sigma. I did not find the "novel" approach used by Perez to be useful in any way. I also was offended by the blatant marketing that takes place at the end (sorry to ruin the ending for everyone). Take my advice--spend the >$ on other authors (Breyfogle or Pyzdek), who do provide the "meat" of six sigma. You won't be sorry...trust me on this! I've seen more useful six sigma pamphlets!

4 out of 5 stars Six Sigma in Silicon Valley.......2000-08-14

I believe Mario Perez-Wilson wrote this book to show the novice how to start the trip to achieving Six Sigma. He uses a real life example to teach the concepts that can be used in any industry. I have used the principals in this book as well as those from the courses he teaches with great success. I did not have to get a "Black Belt" or pay "Cowboy Consultants" huge fees to bring my processes to Six Sigma. I followed his road map. I cannot recommend it enough if you are serious about improving your companies' bottom line.

1 out of 5 stars Six Sigma is the way to go, but not with this book!.......1999-07-20

I have just finished reading Mario Perez-Wilson's 396 pages of Six Sigma consulting propaganda. In fact, an entire chapter is devoted to promoting Advanced Systems Consultants-Perez-Wilson's consulting firm-as the best, if not only, way to achieve Six Sigma in an organization. A memorial to the overarching ego of Mr. Perez-Wilson, "Six Sigma: Understanding the Concept, Implications and Challenges" is repetitive, poorly edited, and gives only enough information about Six Sigma to allow the reader to engage in cocktail party small talk.

4 out of 5 stars A novel way to Six Sigma.......1999-07-09

"Six Sigma: Understanding the Concept, Implications and Challenges", gently and in a novel way, takes the reader to understanding the importance of applied quality techniques in today's industry. Mario Perez-Wilson demonstrates how each "opportunity of error" in a complex manufacturing or administrative process can mount into disastrous cumulative consequences, if each opportunity is not reduced to zero. Armed with statistical methods, it is possible to achieve zero-defective products in processes involving mass productions in the order of the hundred thousand units, and this is what SIX SIGMA does. Like in the electronics industry, there are also many other processes in which it would be impossible to control the release of a flawless product or service if not counting with the power of a tool such as Six Sigma. This book clarifies concepts and introduces a new approach for those who must deal with quality issues, productivity, customer satisfaction, and profitability.

                      Book Description

"For 21st-century success, you can't afford to remain comforable," says Ball. "Nor can you survive in a reactive mode. To get ahead you have to set goals. You have to have a systematic plan for achieving them. Creating and managing a culture where you methodically grow the way you want to takes careful, persistent efforts. And, with so much change, leaders need to help people get back to time-proven methods. That's where DNA Leadership fits in. What could be more elegant and dynamic than our own cell structure or more fundamental than our own DNA?"

DNA Leadership correlates to the biological principles of cell theory and DNA. It provides a control panel leaders can use to motivate individuals to achieve common purposes and objectives. The cells in our bodies are the ultimate expression of teamwork, buy-in, and proactive pursuit of a common mission. Although each cell is highly specialized and self-directed, it must communicate with other cells and do its job flawlessly or the whole system is at risk.

It is the same in business. Only the "cells" we have to work with are not cells of humans, they are humans. The central strategy in DNA Leadership is to integrate everyone into a self-managed, self-directed, self-motivated, and self-improving system-where individuals contribute not because they have to, but because they want to.

"Most people are intelligent, but only some are successful," writes Ball. "And the best-kept secret is that successful organizations and people find and follow methods for everything they do."

The methods in this book get back to disciplined nuts-and-bolts basics in setting goals and in implementing action plans to methodically create the future. Apply a few ideas and you will get immediate results. Study and apply the concepts completely and you will substantially increase your lifetime accomplishments and the growth and profits of your business.

If you are seeking a better approach for building your company and for pursuing business and personal goals with greater results, here it is.

Dr. F. R. Bosch an apologist, researcher, and lecturer who integrates [Biblical] faith and knowledge, is a full-time university professor in Southern California, U.S.A.

There is some merit in reviewing books about leadership methods and proposals after they have been out for some time. As with much that comes and goes in the leadership and management field, one needs to be discerning. Leadership and management gimmicks and fads play themselves out in the course of their life-cycle. Nonetheless, the insights that have substance and value are the ones that prevail.

DNA Leadership appears to be the product of integrating some proven classical leadership and management theory with experience, and uses the biological DNA model to present an integrated formula. Given the interest that DNA has generated, especially over the last couple of decades, a DNA leadership paradigm can be intriguing when looking through a telescope. However, when scrutinized through a microscope it may be entirely different.

Overall, DNA Leadership gets the point across, although occasionally the analogies fall short from reality, particularly when it comes to the workings of DNA. This is sometimes a weakness when analogies are used. They fail to represent accurately what is being compared. Therefore, one must be discerning especially when analogies are used. In some instances they are made to say what the author wants to say instead of validating what is actually being said.

In some respects, DNA Leadership has selectively chosen certain proven management theories and practices, repackaged them, and introduced an edited version. This does not undermine what Mr. James R. Ball presents in his book. It serves to emphasize that absolute foundations exist in the personal as well as in the corporate worlds. It also clarifies that in spite of living in changing times, absolute foundations never change - what actually changes are their application.

Ball has simply employed the contemporary DNA vehicle to communicate what leadership and management has been teaching for the past century. The strength of Ball's book is that he used an innovative and creative vehicle to emphasize the long-tested leadership and management theories and applications that work - in spite of the seemingly convenient imprecise parallels made. The imprecise parallels do not greatly detract, but may affect the credibility of the fastidious reader. Unfortunately, some company references (e.g., Arthur Andersen) date the book, as well as may cause the reader to question the effectiveness of theory instead of the application being proposed. This brings about the self-fulfilling prophecy of throwing out the "baby with the bath water" - an unwise choice when it comes to proven leadership and management.

It may seem obvious to manage in such a way that leads to the accomplishment of the organization's goals, but sometimes that's more difficult than it would seem. Ball's book provides excellent and useful ideas and strategies to developing that style of management, one that directly leads to attaining the organization's goals, and, ipso facto, allowing the organization to set new goals. Another book that also supplies useful ways to attain the organization's goals is Guerilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine.

James Ball has a style which makes the material he is offering compelling and obviously worthwhile. Recommend this book to anyone who is trying to improve business performance or improve the quality of their personal life.

This reconsideration of the macroeconomics, microeconomics, methodology, and social philosophy of the classical economists has been a small gem on the history of economic thought, written in a way accessible to students, while having much to teach scholars. The reissue of this book twenty years after its original publication is a tribute to the enduring relevance of the questions raised during the formative period of economics and to the skill with which the author analyzes them.

I have heard a lot of good things about Thomas Sowell. I have no doubt that he is a brilliant man. And I admire his conservative/libertarian principles. But this book was so difficult to understand, I wondered what use is an abundance of knowledge if one is unable to dispense it to others? Since I have read other Sowell books, I have concluded that it is the subject matter and not the author, which contributes to its lack of readability. If you're an experienced economist, you'll probably enjoy this book. If you're a novice in economics, don't bother. Instead, I would recommend Henry Hazlitt's "Economics in One Lesson" to get an understanding and appreciation for classical economics.

                      Book Description

Keynes and the Classics Reconsidered is a collection of scholarly work re-evaluating Keynes's revolution in economic thought, both in the method of macroeconomic reasoning and in policy-making. This book brings together mostly a younger generation of economists to revisit Keynes's interpretation of the classics and its impact on macroeconomic theory and policy. There has been a considerable advance in the literature re-interpreting the classics and the early neoclassical economists. Most of the contributing authors have themselves been active participants in this reinterpretation. The participation of Robert Clower, an active participant in the Keynes versus the classics debate since the 1960s, brings a particularly significant retrospective to this fresh look at the record.
Keynes and the Classics Reconsidered will be of interest to policy-makers and economists, especially those working in the areas of macro and monetary economics.

1 out of 5 stars Ahiakpor lacks the necessary training in basic mathematics.......2004-09-21

Ahiakpor(A),as well as most of the other authors who contributed to this volume of collected essays, lacks training, even at the level of introductory prealgebra,in basic mathematics.First,(A)lacks any understanding of the tie in between the basic income( consumption )expenditure-multiplier model of chapter 10 of the General Theory, based on the Y=C+I(C=a+bY) model and its microfoundations in the production possibilities frontier(PPF)analysis, first put forward by Keynes in a letter to Richard Kahn in September,1931 and then expanded into Keynes's formal supply side analysis in chapter 20 of the General Theory(GT)in 1936 in his D-Z model. An understanding of this chapter requires two semesters(quarters)of calculus.Second,(A )and his coauthors lack a basic knowledge of Paul Samuelson's brilliant simplification of Keynes's argument in chapters two, eleven ,twelve and thirteen of his pathbreaking textbook,Economics, first written in 1948.The entire income expenditure model can be directly mapped in a one to one onto correspondence with the PPF model. However,a knowledge of intermediate algebra and basic geometry is needed .(A) appears to lack such training. This is clearly demonstrated in A's unclear and inconsistent discussion of the paradox of thrift as it relates to savings. The paradox depends on where the economy is located in the PPF model.IF the economy is operating on the boundary of the PPF and the private sector has formed a correct forecast of future expected outcomes,THEN additional savings will be transformed into additional investment. On the other hand, IF the private sector is operating in the interior of the PPF and/or is unable to forecast future expected outcomes due to innovation, technological advance or change,THEN additional savings will result in the economy moving deeper into the interior of the PPF as decreased sales leads to decreased profits, increased inventories and a decreased capacity ulilization rate of the existing stock of capital goods.Investment will decrease. The downward spiral will then spread to the consumption goods industries as workers laid off in the investment goods industries stop spending .A reverse multiplier process leads to a further cumulative decline in the economy as a whole.Third,A is severely confused about the role of "hoarding"and/or savings in Keynes's theory of liquidity preference. Cash is not withdrawn from the banking system and stuck in a mattress.Instead,a higher rate of interest must be paid to the potential hoarder in order to compensate him for his increased preference for liquidity. It is the higher rate of interest, combined with lender's versus borrower's conflicts over risk considerations, that leads to a decline in investment.Fourth, Keynes never claimed that the classical economists assumed full employment at all times. What they assumed was that there was only frictional and voluntary unemployment. Fifth, Keynes never claimed that the classicals did not have a business cycle model. They had a model based on a incorrect, temporary misallocation of resources due to businessmen making mistakes in forecasting the particular future mix of products in their inventories. These errors in demand forecasting would be temporary. This type of cycle can at best explain a mild 6 month recession that is selfcorrecting. It says nothing about the problem of investing in fixed durable capital goods over time or the fact that such investments represent irreversible and irrevocable sunk capital. The "real options"approach to capital investment in recent neoclassical type models is an indirect tribute to Keynes's pathbreaking realization that the major cause of macro failures has to do with a fixed capital stock that is always suboptimal in both the private and public sectors. The economy generally operates in the interior of the PPF.

                        Book Description

The field of economics proves to be a matter of metaphor and storytelling--its mathematics is metaphoric and its policymaking is narrative. Economists have begun to realize this and to rethink how they speak. This volume is the result of a conference held at Wellesley College, involving both theoretical and applied economists, that explored the consequences of the rhetoric and the conversation of the field of economics.

This is a collection of articles based on the speeches given at a conference on the rhetoric of economics. The approach to economics isn't mathematical this time, but literary. In this book, several authors, with different academical backgrounds (economists, lawyers, philosophers, linguists) analyse how literary critic could improve the practice of economics, and what the economists actually talk about and how they persuade. To enjoy this one, you ought to be aware of the present debate on the methodology of economics, because in this book very few consequences are extracted, most of it is arguing and refutation. Stanley Fish's article is in my opinion the more interesting one, while Weintraub's and Heilbroner's are weak. I would recommend reading McCloskey's "The rhetoric of economics" first, the blueprint for all the debate to follow.

                          Book Description

The American president is widely viewed by the public and media as the nation's single most influential political and economic figure. But social scientists have often concluded that presidential words fall "on deaf ears" or have little lasting impact on policy or public opinion. Then why did Bill Clinton make 12,798 public references to the economy during his eight years in office compared with Harry Truman's mere 2,124 during his own two terms? Why George W. Bush's 3,351 remarks during his first term? Did all these words matter?

The Politics of Economic Leadership is the first comprehensive effort to examine when, why, and how presidents talk about the economy, as well as whether the president's economic rhetoric matters. It demonstrates conclusively that such presidential words do matter.

Using an unprecedented compendium of every known unique statement by U.S. presidents about the economy from World War II through the first George W. Bush administration, Dan Wood measures the relative intensity and optimism of presidents' economic rhetoric. His pathbreaking statistical analysis shows that presidential words can affect everything from approval of the president's job performance to perceptions of economic news, consumer confidence, consumer behavior, business investment, and interest rates. The impacts are both immediate and gradual. Ultimately, Wood concludes, rhetoric is indeed a tool of presidential leadership that can be used unilaterally to affect a range of political and economic outcomes.

This cutting-edge book presents convergence in the broader marketing context but also emphasizes principles related to direct marketing. Creative strategy is a direct - and critical - extension of overall business and marketing strategy and branding. Baier-Stein/MacAaron deliver tools and strategies valuable to professionals from all areas of marketing communications, as well as general, executive-level management.
