I've seen a lot of books on home based business and this one's the best. It is jammed full of articles on direct sales and network marketing as well as in depth stories about top performers in the field. A must read! The information contained in the book is already helping me make money from the internet here on Maui.

I, as a student, was utterly dissatisfied with the content from this product. Since STAR testing was around the corner, I wanted to prepare myself and benefit from test-taking strategies. When I flipped through the pages, I realized how much the material was irrelevant compared to the district tests that I take every now and then, throughout the school year. Apparently, it did not at all cover 9th grade material and did not set the bar high enough. However, I am sure it can match elementary to middle school standards. It is unbelievable and absurd how the publisher can actually dare to distribute this straightforward material. When I took the STAR test, I noticed 95% of the practice questions (given in the workbook) were not at all alike compared to the real deal. As a student who reviewed the workbook and took the real test, I urge you not to purchase this ridiculous book or any books from this publisher.

This book does not seem to even meet the requirements of ninth grade standards. It is horrendous for them to even say that it will help any ninth grade students to meet requirements. The math that is covered is only Algebra I level. For the students in 9th grade that are taking Geometry or Algebra II, this is insufficient material. Also, this book offers mediocre review questions on writing and reading. It covers only material learned in elementary school and middle school. The reading comprehension is much too easy and is at a 6th grader level.


I would never recommend this book to anyone. It is an entire waste of money and efforts. Please do not purchase this book because it is not beneficial to anyone except for the publisher.

This is a very good book - it is in bite size sections that you can read, even one a day, to learn some techniques to get a YES from people who have the option to say NO to you.

Many of the MNCs use this book for their senior managers to learn new skills - so it works.

At twice the price, this book is definitely worth buying.

I collect books on negotiation and used to teach it at college level in connection with real estate classes. Give and Take is the best book I know of on negotiating tactics as opposed to theory. It is an alphabetically arranged list of dozens of strategies and ploys used by real negotiators. It is similar in this regard to Gavin Kennedy's excellent Pocket Negotiator (Economist) and David Churchman's Negotiation Tactics. Give and Take is most suitable for those involved in business and sales negotiations. I own several copies and carry one around with me in my car. Unless you're in an academic setting or a professional negotiator, this book is the one to buy. It has made me a lot of money.

I have 2 major complaints regarding this book. First, the title is completely misleading. The book contains strategies for SALES people. I agree that there may be strategies that sales people use that may be employed by other business people, yet I hardly agree that this constitutes "The Complete Guide to Negotiating Strategies and Tactics."

Second, the organization of this book is horrendous. It's exactly like reading an Internet newsgroup. There are no chapters, but instead one or two pages on each "tactic or strategy." There is no attempt at categorizing the information. And like a newsgroup, the noise to signal ratio is ridiculously high. While you may find golden nuggets of wisdom, you will spend precious time digging for them. Best of luck if you ever want to refer to them again.

Look elsewhere for a good book on negotiation. My copy just went into the garbage, maybe you can look there.

This book gives anyone a great guide for negotiating in business. It thouroghly goes over hundreds of negotiating tactics. A must read for anyone in business. Also good for personal negotiations.

      This is a lovely book, filled to the last page with wonderful ideas. I was lucky enough to have inherited my mother's table loom and am just now beginning to do a little background research on weaving before tackling the rather daunting equipment my mother left me. I found this title among those I was browsing and decided that it would be a good place to start. There are several techniques which are mentioned also in Weaving Without a Loom, another book I would recommend for beginners, but Monahoghan and Joyner's book goes several steps farther. Burningham introduces paper weaving, but these authors show visual techniques, similar to Escher's style of tricking the eye, introduce modifying frames, interwoven photos, and basket making to their repertoire. They show stick weaving, but introduce the use of straws to make the process smoother and color changes to add interest to the bands.

      I was particularly impressed with the depth with which they showed techniques, particularly in tapestry work with colors added to create pictures. The Japanese braid work was also interesting as was some of their beading information. I particularly enjoyed the brief discussion of plaid and undertook the weaving of a small square which I used to make a passport bag for a friend going to London this summer.

      This book contains instructions for creative and enjoyable weaving projects. Instructions are clearly written and are well illustrated. Supplies required are easily available.

      The title makes it sound as if it is a children's book (YOU can weave), and in some ways it is written as a child's book. But instructions are all addressed to a teacher of children. As a result, the book suffers slightly from a mixed identity.

      Mixed in with the illustrations of completed projects done by students are photos of weavings done by knowledgeable weavers using different types of looms than those used in the book. These weavings are much more impressive in appearance than the children's weavings (logically so), but it can lead to disappointment if the reader thinks this book will enable him/her to produce items like those shown.

      This book is a great resource for the development of lessons for children in the 9 - 14 age range. I used this to prepare a lesson for a home school group. The children really enjoyed the process as well as the end product. This book is full of "do-able" projects with a topic which otherwise can overburden young people with tedium. I would, however, recommend that the teacher practice the projects with the materials to be used. For instance, poster board is too thin for the activities in which a cardboard loom is used.

                For the most part, Brazil’s forests were not harvested, but annihilated, and relatively little was extracted for the benefit of Brazilians, a tragedy perhaps worse than deforestation alone. Fruitless Trees aims to make sense of what at first glance appears to be the senseless destruction of Brazil’s incomparable timber.

                The forests have always been Brazil’s most striking natural resource, and the Portuguese colonists anticipated enormous returns from its harvest, since Brazilian timber was more abundant and superior in quality to anything known in Europe, North America, or even Portugal’s East Indian possessions. This work investigates the relationship between Portugal’s colonial forest policies and the successes of the colonial venture, showing how forest law shaped the fortunes of the timber sector and promoted or obstructed colonial development. Timber was the steel, oil, coal, and plastic of the early modern period, and the effectiveness of its extraction affected nearly every branch of the colonial economy.

                Challenging previous scholarship that simply ascribed the destruction of Brazil’s remarkable forests to the Europeans’ voracious greed and inherent hostility to the forest, the author argues that we must delineate the extent to which tropical timber was put to advantageous ends, and explore precisely why so large a proportion of Brazil’s timber was incinerated rather than converted to colonial wealth.

                Although Brazil exported substantial quantities of timber to Europe, the total amount fell far below expectations. The author attributes this in part to several ecological and geographical factors including the lack of common stands, the preponderance of timbers too dense to be floated inexpensively downstream, and the dearth of safe ports and navigable rivers. But the most significant factor in timber’s unexpectedly poor showing was the Crown’s effort from 1652 to monopolize Brazil’s best timbers.                           Dick presents a very detailed view of his own experience making successful campaigns, making sure that customer information is never overused. Instead of making regression analysis using neural networks, he just asks the information to his clients, because a fact that you already know always will be better than the information you infer.

                          Very useful if you are working in United States, but is not as much useful here in Peru were I live, because the patterns on reading letters are different. I recommend it very much.

                          Mr. Shaver uses over a dozen powerful examples of proper database marketing with privacy assured for consumers being marketed to. Three primary cases produced record profits for MCI, MMD, and others while assuring consumer relevance. If more direct marketers read this, and employ its' practices, we will cut down on marketing NOISE, increase more of what each customer wants, and save wasted trees in the process. A MUST READ for anyone marketing things to humans. Practical application guidelines include creative parameters; how each communication should look and what should be said and not said. Much more than a statement of philosophy...a real how-to book that can begin to be used immediately. (If you're really serious about getting rid of the Junk-mail problem).
