    Book Description

The award-winning first edition of The Promise of Mediation, published ten years ago, is a landmark classic that changed the field's understanding of the theory and practice of conflict intervention. That volume first articulated the "transformative model" of mediation, which greatly humanized the vision of how the mediation process could help parties in conflict. In the past decade, the transformative model has proved itself and gained increasing acceptance. It is now being used in such diverse arenas as workplace, community, family, organizational, and public policy conflicts, among others.

In this new edition, the authors draw on a decade of work in theory development, training, practice, research, and assessment to present a thoroughly revised and updated account of the transformative model of mediation and its practical application, including

This volume is a foundational resource on transformative practice, for both readers of the first edition and new readers - including mediators, facilitators, lawyers, administrators, human resource professionals, policymakers, and conflict resolution researchers and educators. More generally, this book will strike a chord with anyone interested in humanizing our social institutions and building on a relational vision of society.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Valuable New information for Mediators.......2005-05-11

This newly revised edition of The Promise of Mediation offers a wealth of new information on the priniciples of transformative conflict intervention. Many readers may not be aware that the revised edition actually contains almost entirely new material, reflecting new understandings of transformative mediation that have developed since the publication of the first edition. Bush and Folger offer new specifics for practice in the transformative framework of mediation through a carefully analyzed case study, in which we can see details of the "small steps" of conflict transformation. They also discuss the impact that the transformative movement has had on the field as a whole, and debunk some common misconceptions about the transformative framework. I have especially enjoyed the last chapter, which addresses, more completely than anything in the first edition, the deep underlying values that have led to the articulation of a transformative vision for mediation, and looks at possibilities for the future of the field.
This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone interested in mediation, conflict, or just the interaction of human beings.

5 out of 5 stars A Huge Step Forward in the Art and Science of Mediation.......2004-11-17

I'm grateful to the authors for the significant advance in mediation thinking that this book represents. This new edition has the potential to move the entire field toward a deeper, more powerful understanding. With the original edition, and again with this one, Bush and Folger have provided great clarity to a topic that, until now, has been muddled. While other mediators and writers succumb to the pressures of conflict and become part of the problem, these authors instruct us on how to remain true to the most important principles that lead to deep healing of human conflict. If I had the need, I would only hire a mediator who had read, studied, understood and embraced this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book on strategy.......2002-10-11

This book gives some very interesting views on strategy and could be read as an alternative to the great gurus like Porter, Ghemawat, Mintzberg, Markides and others. This book has been written by a professor of LBS, and although it is an easy read it also covers aspects of the economics of strategy (e.g. the role of value added), similar to the book "Economics of strategy" by Besanko et al.
What I liked especially is the discussion of the basic sources of competitive advantage: there are only four! Innovation, Architecure (of the company and its external relations), Reputation, and strategic assets.
The rough outline of the book is:
Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the basic structure of strategy and the role of value added. Chapters 2 and 3 cover the relationships between companies (e.g. cooperation and coordination). Chapters 5 to 8 discuss the three sources of competitive advantage (architecture, reputation, innovation), as well as the role of strategic assets. In the chapters 9 to 17 several special issus (e.g. M&A, Pricing, Positioning) are discussed. In chapters 18 and 19, the author draws together the discussion of the preceding chapters and gives advice how to develop a strategy.
Very good is also the discussion of the history of strategy at the end of the book.

In 100 Years of Wall Street, Charles Geisst (author of Wall Street: A History) takes us on a tour of one of America's most storied institutions. From the early bucket shops at the turn of the century to Maria Bartiromo of CNBC, Geisst, with the help of a collection of pictures, charts, cartoons, and stock certificates presents an entertaining look at the remarkable changes that have transformed this small corner of New York into the cornerstone of the world's financial markets.

      Book Description

Financial ups and downs are only part of the 20th century saga of Wall Street. The street symbolizes the historic triumphs, failures and excesses of capitalism, but it has also been the scene of great human achievements and epic tragedies. Like America itself, "The Street" has shown almost boundless optimism and tenacity in the face of adversity. It has also revealed a surprising weakness for foolishness along with an unpredictable capacity for bursts of genius, innovation and success. That is why 100 YEARS OF WALL STREET, the story of the world's financial center, is also the story of our American century from our first uncertain steps on the international stage to the responsibilities and challenges we face as the sole superpower at the end of the millennium. The expert and occasionally bemused guide to the story is Charles R. Geisst, who is renowned as a historian, best-selling author, financial scholar and corporate consultant. He is also a gifted storyteller who reveals how the smallest details produce crucial shifts in the big picture. With wit and profound insight, Geisst takes the reader behind the scenes to explain how powerful personalities and unexpected developments created the financial, cultural and social events that helped shape our world. We are the heirs of Wall Street's phenomenal achievement, but it has also fueled runaway greed. It has contributed to growth while scrapping large sectors of the economy. Is the market "fair" or "just"? What do such questions really mean? Geisst dramatically brings to life a world that can only be fully understood by following its secret deals, monumental transactions, colorful characters, earth-rattling market collapses and exhilarating highs. There are 200 photographs and other illustrations 100 YEARS OF WALL STREET, many of them rarely reproduced. They portray famous crises, the day-to-day grind and, above all, many of the human beings who toiled, schemed or created wise reforms at the center of global financial activity. The careers and personalities of the century's wealthiest men -- Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Morgans, Milkens, Boeskys -- become an important part of Geisst's fascinating history. On the one hand, there were the Titans who shrewdly built their investments into vast fortunes and just as cleverly built solid public reputations. In contrast were the high-rollers and outlaws who fell off the tightrope, winding up as suicides or bankrupts or convicted felons. Decade-by-decade, with the most important dates highlighted, 100 YEARS OF WALL STREET is a deftly crafted introduction to the compelling true story of "The Street." It is also a rich source of little-known anecdotes and new insights for anyone who invests or works in today's financial climate. Geisst places the present in the context of a century of chaos and corruption, leadership and huge losses, insider trading and ticker-tape parades. His unforgettable scandalous tales, hilarious anecdotes and legendary rumors have never been reported in the Dow Jones average. With market levels at astronomical highs, no one can question the powerful role played by Wall Street and its movers and shakers today. For an engaging and solidly researched account of its century-long grip on American history, 100 YEARS OF WALL STREET earns a permanent place in the library of anyone who wants to understand the background of today's bull market and the wide range of possible scenarios for the future.

It was a very quick and refreshing read for me. Always nice to see short descriptions with vivid pictures.

4 out of 5 stars The Ideal Gift for anyone who likes Business History.......2004-10-02

100 Years of Wall Street is a beautiful decade-by-decade look at the history of "the street." Written by the well-known business author Charles R. Geisst, it is a sumptuous black-and-white exploration of Wall Street history. This may be best thought of as a companion volume to his other book (Wall Street: A History) as while that book concentrated on the characters, colorful and despicable, who created the financial world of today, the narrative in this book is a brief overview of the trends that occurred across a century, accompanied by a series of well-chosen photos. There are a number of charts that supplement the well-written narrative. If you know anyone with a deep interest in the financial markets, that engine of American commerce, this will make an ideal gift.

5 out of 5 stars most vivid picture of the street.......2002-03-27

I enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the headlines. Very educational and informative.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting.......2001-07-06

This book, rich with wonderful old photos, gives a concise history of the last 100 years of the financial culture that has come to be known as Wall Street. A good blend of text, photos, and charts make this book interesting to the non-financial reader.

The author divided the book into decades and each chapter outlined the changes that occurred over those years.

At the beginning of the last century, Wall Street was known for its lack of financial regulation regarding trades. Scandals and outright swindles abounded. Four years after the Crash of 1929, FDR's administration passed nationwide banking and securities laws to make sure that this kind of disaster did not happen again.

Unfortunately, the real and distasteful inner workings of Wall Street were revealed in the Senate hearings. An SEC commissioner called investment bankers "financial termites". This knowledge scared investors away for the next 20 years.

In the early 50s, investing became popular with middle class investors for the first time in a generation, and mutual funds were developed after being gone for 30 years.

The 60s brought the birth of the modern mergers and acquisitions business in the U.S, and the days of small brokerage firms were coming to an end.

The 70s brought extensive reforms concerning commissions while the 80s were the years of junk bonds, insider trading scandals, and the savings and loan crisis.

The author called the 80s the decade of greed and the 90s the decade of boom. The Internet has brought about a totally new way of trading stocks and has made up-to-the-minute financial news available to everyone.

The changes in the last 100 years on Wall Street have been phenomenal, mirroring the technological changes in our society.

      4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-02-17

Charles R. Geisst's enjoyable book chronicles Wall Street in the twentieth century. He effectively captures the feel of the various boom and bust periods. The clear, informative text is supplemented with incredible black and white photographs of each period's key events and people, making it very evocative and intriguing. We at ... recommend this book to anyone - not only someone in business - who wants to learn about Wall Street's history. It would make a great gift for anyone who works in the financial industry or for a young person who is interested in how money works.

                    Book Description

Previously available only in an out-of-print Swedish edition published in 1955, Henry Bengston's firsthand account deals with what historian Dag Blanck calls the "other Swedish America."

Swedish immigrants in general were conservative, but Bengston and others—most notably Joe Hill—joined the working-class labor movement on the left, primarily as Debsian socialists, although their ranks included other socialists, communists, and anarchists. Involved in the radical labor movement on many fronts, Bengston was the editor of Svenska Socialisten from 1912 until he dropped out of the Scandinavian Socialist Federation in 1920. Even after 1920, however, his sympathies remained with the movement he had once strongly espoused.

5 out of 5 stars How To Sell Effectively.......2005-05-21

This great how-to book covers the entire sales process. It is a valuable tool for all sales people, both new and experienced. It was published in 1996. Really, nothing much has changed in sales since then.

5 out of 5 stars The only sales book you'll ever need.......2000-08-22

This outstanding book spells out all the critical areas of knowledge and skill needed to sell successfully. If it is possible to learn to be a top salesperson from a book, this would be the book. Sales is a tough game and this book can help smooth out the rough spots. The specifics on opening, closing, and handling objections and problems are especially helpful. Great for all types of sales and salespeople.

5 out of 5 stars A practical, effective sales book for everyone.......1999-02-07

The book is full of tips and techniques from opening the call, to handling that difficult customer, to staying in touch with those that didn't even buy from you!. It is so well organized, it makes finding what you want extremely easy. At first, I figured it was just another how-to-sell book, but after both novice and veteran salespeople told me about it, I had to see for myself. Now, I keep it in my attache and refer to it often.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written DoE primer that has broader audience than health care.......2006-12-25

Although applicability of Design of Experiments (DoE) is periodically mentioned in this text, health care is not discussed much until the eighth chapter of nine, and by that point the inexperienced reader ahould already know that DoE can be used for far more than just health care problems - Sloan points out the wide applicability of DoE in his preface, and I mention this because the title of the book is a bit misleading. One interesting characteristic of this work is that the teaching sequence was inspired by a designed experimentation course at the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. At the start of each chapter, learning objectives are laid out, and there is some overlap between each chapter to reinforce the learning process. After Sloan argues his case that "logic supports the use of math and science in health care and in every aspect of business management", and that "a well educated person uses the language of science, statistical reasoning, on a daily basis", he offers a brief history of DoE followed by a discussion of gestalting quality. The performance of an ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) is then discussed step-by-step - even though modern statistical software will perform these steps automatically, Sloan seems determined to make sure the reader understands the background behind this process. Simple mathematical formulas are presented very clearly. Throughout the central portion of this book, experiments performed by a fictitious company, Corrugated Copters, are used to discuss qualities and comparing qualities. Introductions to factorial and fractional factorial experiments are then presented, and Sloan prefaces this discussion by pointing out that "trial-and-error learning makes the sequential and iterative acquisition of knowledge an expensive proposition", and that "if you think an education is expensive, try ignorance". Although brief, this discussion is well written, especially if the reader is attempting to understand some of the finer details behind DoE design using such statistical tools as MINITAB. In the ninth chapter, "Summing it Up", Sloan lays out the steps that he suggests the reader use if they choose to promote the use of science and statistical reasoning in health care. Overall, this book is very well-written, and the author's enthusiasm for the subject matter is very apparent. Note that this book is currently available free of charge as a PDF document download at the author's evidence-based-decisions website.
