The Leadership Challenge and Encouraging the Heart

The key to becoming a highly effective leader is to develop powerful habits of mind!

The best leaders use multiple frames or lenses to view common challenges and to solve their most difficult problems. Through a series of dialogues between a novice and a master teacher, and between a new and a seasoned principal, best-selling authors Bolman and Deal demonstrate how framing—and then reframing—challenges brings clarity, helps to anticipate problems, and leads to more comprehensive and powerful leadership strategies.

The four frames most commonly used by teachers and administrators are:

By reframing situations, educators ultimately gain more confidence and certainty in their decisions, and reduce the anxieties that can arise with difficult choices. In Reframing the Path to School Leadership, Bolman and Deal provide an optimistic view of what can go right in schools today, and what possibilities lie ahead for classroom and school leadership!

4 out of 5 stars Great book, quick read!.......2007-01-20

Bolman & Deal's Reframing the Path to School Leadership is an interesting read. They use four frames of reference--the political frame, human resource frame, the structural frame, and the symbolic frame--to discuss leadership, both on the classroom and school level.

They use a fictional cast of characters that includes new and veteran teachers, and new and veteran principals. At first I was wary of the fictional narrative, but I found it interesting and it kept me reading. At the end of each chapter, which includes a number of fictional scenarios on familair themes (beginning of the year, discipline, tracking, special education), there is a discussion part that I found very helpful.

I'm a beginning principal, and I found this book informative and enlightening. It's also written for teachers, and I think I would've found the book just as useful if I'd read it when I was still in the classroom.

Mr. Fombrun is the reputation expert. In this book he and Mr. Van Riel do a great job of ilustrating corporate reputation in simple and clear terms. The use of graphs, examples, metrics, and references to other authors makes the content very credible and useful. This book serves as a guide for quickly applying the concepts of reputation to any organization. It's very easy to read. Don't expect deepness, it's more of a excellent introductory text for those unfamiliar with the topic of corporate reputation.

5 out of 5 stars What Your CEO Needs to Know!.......2003-10-04

Finally something I can use to convince my CEO that reputations can and should be managed! The book provides a comprehensive overview of the critical success factors of reputation management and discusses a number of interesting case studies to underline key points. Though its a complex subject the book reads pretty easy and I could relate most of it to my daily work as a communications professional. To me, the bottom line is I can now start a discussion in my firm about the need for managing reputation and use solid arguments based on both research and other companies' best practice. It seems that being able to explain what drives reputation and who should be involved in managing it is half the work...

Britain, France, And The Financing Of The First World War is a scholarly study by Martin Horn (Associate Professor in the Department of History, McMaster University) of the flow of money during the First World War. Professor McMaster demonstrates how the financial ability to arm and feed vast armies was crucial to the Allied victory, and that Britain and France fought not only to win and survive, but to bolster and preserve financial strength on an international scale. A meticulously researched and persuasively presented study, Britain, France, And The Financing Of The First World War is a seminal study and a welcome addition to academic library collections.

              Book Description

Recently nominated one of five finalists selected for the 2005 Berry-AMA Book Prize for best book in marketing!

"Tellis has done a remarkable job. He has brought together an amazingly diverse literature. Unlike some other sources that claim to be able to measure the effects of advertising, Tellis's thoroughness and ability to understand and convey results of various experiments and statistical analyses helps the reader to separate the wheat from the chaff. Any student of advertising, whether new to the field or a seasoned veteran executive or researcher, should read this book."
--Alan G. Sawyer, University of Florida

Effective Advertising: How, When, and Why Advertising Works reviews and summarizes an extensive body of research on advertising effectiveness. In particular, it summarizes what we know today on when, how, and why advertising works. The primary focus of the book is on the instantaneous and carryover effects of advertising on consumer choice, sales, and market share. In addition, the book reviews research on the rich variety of ad appeals, and suggests which appeals work, and when, how, and why they work.

The first comprehensive book on advertising effectiveness, Understanding Effective Advertising reviews over 50 years of research in the fields of advertising, marketing, consumer behavior, and psychology. It covers all aspects of advertising and its effect on sales, including sales elasticity, carryover effects, content effects, and effects of frequency. Author Gerard J. Tellis distills three decades of academic and professional experience into one volume that successfully dismisses many popular myths about advertising, such as:

              * Advertising has a powerful influence on consumers and often generates consumer need

              * The effects of advertising persist for decades

              * If an ad fails initially, repetition will ensure its ultimate success

              * Ads need only one to three exposures to succeed

              * Advertising by argument is the most effective method

              * The best ads are unique and original

              * Advertising is very profitable

Tellis then provides alternatives and establishes the following truths about advertising:

              * Advertising is vitally important for free markets, but its action is subtle and its discovery is fragile

              * The effects of advertising are short-lived

              * If ads are not initially effective, repetition will not make them more effective

              * Scientific principles can show which ads work, though firms often ignore advertising research and persist with ineffective ads

              * Advertising by emotion may have the most effective appeal

              * Templates can yield very effective ads

              * Advertising is often unprofitable

Effective Advertising will be an important addition to courses at the graduate or undergraduate level in advertising, marketing, communication, and journalism. It will also be an invaluable reference for professionals and researchers working in these fields.

              4 out of 5 stars 5 for content, 2 for style.......2004-09-17

This book is full of extremely valuable information, but it's written in a very dense academic style. I wish the author had gotten a ghostwriter to help make it easy and enjoyable to read. It has far more meat than just about any advertising book I've read (and I've read a lot). What it lacks, ironically for a book about the business of communication, is the skill at communicating that. i.e. It's steak without the sizzle. What I would love the publishers to do for a second edition is: get a much better title, a much better cover (this one is appalling and boring), ask a good marketing/popular writer to make it palatable for the every day reader, and you might potentially have a hit on your hands. The content itself is first class.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating for lay people seeking to learn more.......2004-06-04

Effective Advertising: Understanding When, How And Why Advertising Works is an absolute must-read for professional and aspiring advertisers and marketers. It very candidly and straightforwardly presents the theories, principles, and techniquest of advertising, including findings from marketing studies in the late twentieth century concerning advertising intensity, elasticity, frequency, content, and more. As fascinating for lay people seeking to learn more about the commercials that bombard daily life as it is for students and professionals making a living spreading word of their products, Effective Advertising is a thorough, no-nonsense explanation of the nuts and bolts of how messages can be spread and leave a mark on human psychology.

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical business book.......2006-08-26

Don't pick up this book and expect it to be a typical business book. There are no long drawn out discussions of what a mission is and why it is important. You will not find 200 pages on the theories behind what makes a good vision statement and why. If you flip through the pages, you might actually think you have picked up a children's book by mistake. There are lots of simple pencil sketches and big print. The chapters are short - most topics are discussed in one or two pages. For that matter, the book is short - only 130 pages.

But don't let the seeming simplicity of the book fool you. This book says more in just a few words than any other book about vision and mission statements I have ever read. Dr. Bilanich uses simple language and easy to understand examples about how an organization can take the vision off the piece of paper it is written on, and bring it to life within the organization.

Using an easy to follow format, "Using Values to Turn Vision into Reality" guides the reader through creating a vision, communicating the vision, and then using the organizational values to actualize the vision. Dr. Bilanich then provides a considerable amount of detail on how to recognize when the organizational processes do not line up with the values. He also devotes several chapters to leaders - explaining how leaders can help themselves and their employees make sure they are acting in a manner that lives out the values and helps the organization move toward achieving its vision.

Some readers will probably not like the simplicity of the book. They will feel there is not enough substance to do justice to the topic. While I agree that there may be better books on how to develop a mission and vision, I do not believe that you can find a better book, written as concisely, to help you implement your vision throughout the organization. As someone who has read many books on how to develop and implement a vision and mission statement, I appreciate the brevity of "Using Values to turn Vision into Reality."

Dr. Bilanich has pared the topic down to the essentials and written a book that can be read in a few hours and implemented immediately. I would recommend this book to anyone that is struggling with how to begin to incorporate their values into their organization or perhaps is wondering why they are not getting the results they hoped for.
