    Book Description

Competition for the best teaching jobs is becoming more intense. Since publication of the first edition, when it was mainly the most desirable schools that were deluged by applications, the economic climate has made the teacher market more competitive across the board, and is changing hiring practices.

Now extensively revised, this book maintains its place as the most up-to-date book available on job hunting for teachers. The authors cover changes in the educational marketplace; the new mandates about standardized testing and public reporting of student achievement–and what they mean for applicants; how new certification standards and schools’ requirements affect career changers; the growing acceptance of on-line applications and electronic portfolios; and provide additional advice for teachers applying to change schools or districts.

This is also the only guide written by school administrators. Offering the insights and experience of two authors who do the hiring, it details a step-by-step program for taking charge of your teaching career.

How to Get the Teaching Job You Want enables you to:

    * Match your unique talents to the needs of a particular school
    * Craft effective cover letters and resumes, using models that address the specific needs of college graduates, teachers changing schools, returning teachers and career changers
    * Make effective on-line applications
    * Leverage your achievements as an experienced teacher–or, for graduates or career changers, student teaching, substitute teaching, volunteer work or content knowledge–into a job offer
    * Locate jobs on-line and discover valuable information about schools, including test results, educational philosophy and names of key administrators
    * Design a portfolio in book or electronic format to showcase your abilities
    * Practice interview skills using 100 questions taken from real job interviews
    * Apply proven strategies for a variety of interview formats, including high stress interviews and performance interviews
    * Address controversial questions during interviews

This book covers procedures for applying to elementary, middle and high schools; public, independent, and parochial schools; as well as international and boarding schools. Anecdotes recounting the experiences of real candidates looking for jobs illustrate key points. Access to the authors’ web site ensures that you will stay current in a changing job market.

This is a vital book for teachers and aspiring teachers who want to achieve their career goals. It will also be invaluable for guidance counselors, psychologists, librarians and other school professionals.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-08-10

I bought this book and "Teacher Interviews" at the same time. I thought they were both good. Each book provided me with information and helped me to refine my cover letters and resumes. After I bought these two books, I was called for an interview from the first school district I applied to. I am now in the third round of interviews for that district. Especially helpful in this book was the four most common errors of cover letters. I have started a database of "scripts" to insert into my cover letters or resume based on the needs of the school district to which I am applying which matches my accomplishments with their needs. I also liked the organization ideas that "How to Get the Teaching Job You Want" recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent resourse.......2006-04-24

When I first began my search for a permanent teaching job, I picked up this book. I found it extremely helpful in constructing a teaching resume. The trouble with the standard resume format is that the rules do not apply to the teaching profession. After following their guidelines for my resume, I was granted an interview with the school I now teach at. This book then prepared me for the barrage of interviews that followed and I, thankfully, knew what to expect. This book was definitely an asset. What better testimonial than someone who has secured a teaching job by using it?

    3 out of 5 stars Interview Info........2005-05-13

This book is helpful if you need to know how to organize your job search and keep track of documents. It contains a list of interview questions (but that is available on the internet). Since the book is written by administrators it would be helpful if they would give an idea as to the answers administrators want to hear, unfortuneatley the book falls short in this area.
The other area the book could improve on is demonstration lessons, what administrators are looking for. I am sure this varies from school to school but it would still be helpful to hear more about the demonstration lesson phase of the interview process.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Teachers Who Want a Job!.......2002-06-15

I bought this book knowing that the authors worked in the schools as administrators. They were in charge of hiring and firing. This would help me to know what is expected of me when looking for a job. The book is filled with important information and tips. It not only covers the basic resume and cover letter but how to make it stand out! They mention what you should wear to an interview and how to answer some difficult questions. They provide internet links to popular job links for educators. The book includes how to create a portfolio, how to sit, some frequently asked questions, and tons of interview questions.

This book is recommended on every education web site that I have been to recently. I have found this book helpful in presenting me in a good light and as a unique employee. After using this book, I just received a call for me to have my second interview. This book is a must for every teacher seeking a job today!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST-HAVE!!!.......2002-02-15

This book is a must-have for ALL prospective teachers, whether one is a recent college grad, teacher switching districts, or a career-changer. It is written by two renouned school administrators who give a wealth of inside tips for making onself the best possible candidate, regardless of what the situation is. I was amazed at how thorough the book is - every question and concern I had was answered in-depth in these pages. How to Get the Teaching Job You Want includes worksheets for candidates to self-reflect on their teaching philosophies, and forms to record research on each school's background. By using these forms, candidates can write an attention-grabbing cover letter and resume which will match their strengths with the school's needs. Drs. Feirson and Weitzman also provide a number of useful Web sites that will provide information on a school's economic background, student body, state test scores, etc. Best of all, they provide step-by-step procedures for how to locate information on each of these sites. Truly helpful is the "Top 100 Interview Questions" that is sure to prepare a candidate for any interview, no matter how grueling. Feirson and Weitzman explain how to create effective portfolios (even digital portfolios) and how to refer to photos as evidence during your interview. Furthermore, they include a list of questions YOU should ask interviewers to show genuine interest in the school. Lastly, Feirson and Weitzman include a glossary of educational jargon that up-to-date candidates should be familiar with. If you are seeking an educationally-related job, give this book a thorough read ASAP. If your competition reads it and you don't, you will be at a significant disadvantage.

5 out of 5 stars A First Rate Job Hunting Guide for Prospective Teachers.......2001-04-24

Having just read through over 100 resumes for one social studies teaching position ("more applicants than jobs" category, according to the authors), I can tell you that this book is a must-read for prospective teacher candidates. It offers a treasure trove of real-life, up-to-date, and valuable advice for job seekers, ranging from resume writing, how to interview, and where to find on-line information about school districts across the country. This is an extremely valuable and worthwhile guide for recent graduates, career changers, and even school administrators looking for competent and qualified teachers. I highly recommend it!!

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Practical.......2004-06-03

Who is George Colombo? As a book reviewer, I can't tell you. There is nothing in his book that offers an author profile, biography, or credentials. I'm often inspired to read books because of the qualifications that give the author authenticity and standing to present ideas for my consideration. Without this knowledge, I was handicapped, but was attracted to the volume partly by the title, and partly by the subtitle.

The word "killer" implies to me that the strategies or tactics presented in the book will equip me to dominate the competition. Customer CARE, rather than the customary use of the word SERVICE, also caught my attention. The subtitle referring to "customer service that will double and triple profits" validates that the author recognizes the relationship between taking care of the customer and taking care of the bottom line. Unfortunately, acknowledging that critical relationship is missing from most how-to books in this field.

The 25 chapters of this book are organized into four sections: The One Critical Factor for Success in the 21st Century, Laying the Groundwork for Killer Customer Care, Implementing Your Killer Customer Care Program, and Keeping Your Killer Customer Care Program on Track. The titles of the chapters alone will stimulate and remind you of things that must be done, and will guide you to practical tactics and illustrations of the techniques. The organization of the book, presented in the table of contents, makes this a good book to read from cover to cover, as well as an easy-to-use reference tool. A comprehensive index adds to the value.

Colombo emphasizes his position that service is more transaction-oriented, compared to customer care that implies a long-term relationship. While that position is stated clearly, the distinction is not carried through with an obvious emphasis in the text. The same deficiency occurs with the "killer" concept: the word "killer" is used in the text, it is applied more as a contextual theme, rather that a differentiating factor. The book does not compare traditional customer service with killer customer care as it could to make the concept really come alive. Opening comments suggest the book is intended for senior executives, yet the unusual size of the book and cover design are atypical for what would appeal to executives.

Killer Customer Care is filled with valuable tactics, including important management considerations such as measurement and teaching of the concepts. It will be a worthwhile read for owners of small and medium-sized businesses seeking approaches to building long-term relationships with customers. It's definitely a management book, rather than one to be read by the people on the front line who are most responsible for generating the kind of customer care that establishes and sustain lifetime-value loyalty. This book will also be valuable for managers of franchises, dealerships, and branch locations of larger companies. It portrays the role, and how to support it, in ways that will equip managers to carry the message to their people.

5 out of 5 stars A Business Book that Matters.......2004-02-13

Solid instructions, simply put--it's a winning formula that George Colombo has followed to perfection in this book that deserves a place on the bookshelf of any executive charged with turning one-time buyers into long-term customers.

Colombo doesn't depend on esoteric formulas or exotic inspiration; everything in this book is based on in-depth knowledge of business as its conducted in the real world. The ideas presented should be Business 101 for building a company, but too many owners and managers neglect the basics until it's too late.

If taking orders from occasional buyers is all you want to do, then this book isn't for you. But if you want to build a genuine long-term business relationship with good customers, Colombo's lessons will be useful every step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas - Easy Read - Bargain at Twice the Price!.......2003-12-15

Having owned two companies and working in a customer support area before that I can say that is book is full of concepts and tactics that really work. This book is not just about customer service in its classical form, but about all of your interactions with your existing and potential customers. I was amazed at how much George was able to teach me, a seasoned veteran. I pride myself on providing a fabulous customer experience and there are so many things in this book that I had never considered before. A big difference in this book than other business books is the fact you can take bits and pieces of the ideas and integrate them into your business right now. It is not a all-or-nothing approach. I dig it. Worth the time you'll invest in reading. The format is great too. Sidebars make for an entertaining read and show application. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Easing My Pain, Killing Me Softly With This Pitch.......2003-11-13

George Colombo's third book hits paydirt. His ideas are tested and true. His presentation is clear, direct, concise, easily importable, and stems from the the street smarts of this apostle of common sense. The lay-out and design are clear and attractive. The sidebar material teases out the most relevant material for busy managers and jumps off the pages as a tutorial for busy people. I'm already looking forward to George's fourth offering. Try it... it works!

        5 out of 5 stars Finally, a business book that's readable.......2003-10-27

I read this book over the week-end and will be changing some things around the company on Monday. I have to compliment the author on crafting a business book that's fun to read. Few people do this. I like the way it's laid-out -- it gives the reader a lot to read without having a text-heavy look.

Cool stuff. I'll be saying Delta Principle at every opportunity (MacDonald's "Gourmet Cafe" comes to mind).

This book deserves to be thought of as a classic in its field. We should be grateful that we live in a time of computers and books such as this one that they make possible.

The book is very well organized. One can start a project or task from the book without reading the whole book -- every step is detailed and well illustrated. There are enough examples of useful items to encourage beginners, and to stimulate the more experienced quilter or fabric artist. It is delightful to the senses, and every fabric artist should have it.

            Book Description

A public policy is no more than a statement of intent until, and unless, it is successfully implemented through often complex administrative processes. Chief among these is the budget process, through which a policy can be either promoted or suppressed. In the management of the national forests, as in many areas of federal policymaking, the budget process includes an array of organizations and suborganizations in both the executive and legislative branches, each with their own values, incentives, and agendas. The interplay of these powerful forces and its impact on the resources of our national forests is the subject of this masterful new book by V. Alaric Sample. Sample studies the difficulties that have occurred in integrating the results of strategic planning under the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act (RPA) of 1974 and the difficulties that can be expected to occur in implementing the national forest plans prepared under the National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976. As a basis for determining what those corrective measures are and how successful they might be, the external political environment of the Forest Service, as well as the agency's internal dynamics, are discussed in detail. The study begins with a critical examination of budget trends for the Forest Service over the past 25 years. On a program by program basis, each year's budget is analyzed at each point in the political process to reveal the changes made by the Secretary of Agriculture, OMB, and the House and Senate appropriations committees. The results are displayed against Forest Service strategic plans developed under RPA to determine the consistency between planned and actual budgets and program levels. To get a better sense of the internal dynamics and external environment of Forest Service budget development, the budget for a single fiscal year is followed, from its initial stages on five case study national forests to its final approval as Forest Service appropriations. The budget is then followed through two additional stages: the allocation of funds back to the local national forest level and the reporting of expenditures at the end of the fiscal year. The lack of integration between the Forest Service planning and budgeting processes has important implications for the implementation of national forest plans and, more broadly, for the carrying out of various reforms of the National Forest Management Act. Practitioners and students of public management and policymaking will find this study to be a clear and thorough illustration of general principles, developed in the context of current administrative theory, that apply to the implementation of public policies at all levels.

2006 July, Now the search engines market is changed.

There have only Google (42%), Yahoo (28%), MSN (13%), AOL (7%) and Ask (5%) Search Networks in the upper market. But there still have the small companies are working: MIVA and Kanoodle.
Of course, market shares are higher, but quality visitors are lower. Quality Clicks are very importance for every advertiser, so Yahoo and Google must find the ways to catch the quality visitors in every seconds and hours.

Re: Local searches for Yahoo / Google - it still have the good future and development in Hong Kong. Actually, there have many advertisers in Hong Kong or from Mainland China.

Baidu, Alibaba, Sina and Sohu are mainly concerns in Local China only. No doubts, there have many B2B sites or portals for helping the SME Business on promotion in the very different ways on marketing. e.g. exhibitions or online helps.

As you see that PCCW and NWT - are quiet aggressive on their business promotions on Yahoo HK and MSN HK.
