—From the Foreword by Dennis Sparks, Executive Director

How can we use professional development to provide the best teaching and learning opportunities for all students?
To increase student achievement and prepare all students to meet standards, educators must be well prepared. Teachers who know their content and strategies can open a virtual toolbox and take out what they need to help all students become successful. This thoroughly revised and updated edition of Why Can’t We Get It Right? explains how educational leaders can design, deliver, and evaluate collaborative standards-based professional development.
In this unique and indispensable guide, Marsha Speck and Caroll Knipe provide professional development designs, challenging teachers to make a difference for students and resulting in dramatically improved schools. This excellent resource contains:
- Essential questions about high-quality professional development
- Information on creating the culture for a learning community
- Conditions and processes for professional development
- Suggestions on designing your own model
- Tools for evaluating and rethinking professional development and learning
- Strategies for deepening a leader’s impact on a standards-based system
If we are to improve learning and achievement in our schools, we must also nourish the growth of educators and foster a learner-centered environment!
Book Description
Educators have puzzled over why new concepts in professional development do not always translate into improved student learning. Now this pioneering and daring book by Speck and Knipe offers new practices to raise student achievement while strongly advocating for responsible changes in the policies, structures, and operations of schools. Key highlights: - Essential questions about professional development - Focusing professional development in a standards-based system - Creating the culture for a learning community - Addressing teacher work concerns through professional development - Promoting individual growth through professional learning - Challenging districts to sustain professional growth - Designing your own model - Tools for implementing a professional development design - Evaluating professional development - Revisiting past perspectives to underscore the need for change - Facing the emerging issues and challenges of professional learning Over the years, the focus of professional development has changed from what others “do to” educators to what educators “do with” their own inside and outside experiences. This is the book that brings that new focus into sharp relief, and makes it real through insight scenarios, quotations, and tools. The result: a new perspective that helps educators face the challenge of professional learning on a deeply personal level.

Book Description
Technology will change our lives radically. Obsolescence will rapidly become a more pressing dilemma than malfunction. That will produce great uncertainty. We will need to decide between buying and leasing. Will our jobs be secure? Will our education be up to date? Will our politics reflect the times? Indeed, will we even be able to depend on religion for stability?
Anticipating Tomorrow provides non-technical setting on much of the technical paraphernalia which is emerging and altering familiar patterns so dramatically--from jobs, to communities, to entertainment, to religion, and to retirement. The material presented will contribute insights and strategies to endure in the new era. It is a catalog of new options rather than a list of new commandments. It emphasizes the ascendant feature of this century is impermanence while stressing durable planning. Anticipate Tomorrow details viable choices which prevent the Age of Information from becoming the Age of Anxiety. The decisions are still yours.

"An Important Book for Educators".......2005-01-17
"Anticipating Tomorrow" invites the reader to examine a blue-print of life for Americans in the 21st century. The book engaged my interest, but the chapter: Education, the Democratic
Autocracy was especially insightful to me, an educator with over 40 years experience, both on the college and secondary levels. I found M. Blickstein's analysis of America's educational system accurate, sound and meaningful. His prescription for change is "on target." I feel this book is important for educators to read. Frances S. Dubner, Ph.D.
Anticipating Tomorrow .......2004-12-15
This is a very well-written book that is both thoughtful and thought-provoking. Blickstein displays an excellent knowledge of modern technology, and how it affects both how we live today and what we can expect in the near future. His research is exemplary, and his careful use of statistics is easily understood. As a retired academic, I particularly appreciated the chapters on education and retirement. This book is hard to put down.
Brave New World.......2004-09-10
Five years ago did you think you would be using your cell phone for text messaging? Were you using your computer as a source of recorded music? Were you concerned that information encoded in your credit cards could give away the whole store if the data found their way to the wrong hands? Blickstein's book is about the effect of technology on our lives. The changes we know of are the foundation of the book, but its thrust is on the changes we have yet to see. Blickstein has an enormous wealth of knowledge that he brings to bear on the subject. Equally important, he has the vision to describe the way things will be, not in the distant future claimed by sci-fi, but in the immediate future and a few years beyond.
The chapter headings show the book divided into distinct aspects of our lives: Medical, Religion, Community, Politics, Education, Jobs, Retirement, Entertainment, and Networks. In each of these, we are told what to expect and why. A small sampling: Machines in our homes to monitor our health and less need for invasive surgery, decentralized control of mainline religions, an increase in the transient population with concomitant effect on geographic political lines, many if not most blue-collar jobs entailing abstract problem solving, and on and on for hundreds of specific effects of technology.
This book can be recommended for anyone interested in "living and making a living in the 21st Century," the book's subtitle.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Textbook.......2007-03-25
This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the technical and economic aspects of various facets of air transportation including commercial airlines, charter operations, corporate services and other related businesses such as leasing company operations and fractional ownership. The reader gains insights into the areas where costs can be saved and revenues enhanced. For example, the author presents various strategies to minimize fuel usage and hence improve the bottom line.
The book is well written allowing it to be accessible to people working in various specialties in the air transportation business that have opportunities to learn about economic air transport operations. Among the subjects covered include aircraft maintenance economics, various aircraft financing options enabling managers to evaluate those most beneficial for their business and revenue enhancement strategies. The reader will be pleased to learn that environmental issues are not forgotten.
Overall, a useful and helpful book for managers in the air transportation industry who need to learn how to minimize costs, improve revenue and thus enhance profits.
Too much, too little, need more -- focus.......2003-12-13
The title is misleading. I searched through every chapter to decipher how to make a profit with passenger, cargo, and/or other areas of air transportation. It covers a tremendous amount of information like aircraft configurations and technical designs. Unfortunately, and all so common, lots of problems given about aviation; but few solutions offered about profit strategies!
Each chapter technically covers an area of air transportation, but even the short chapters are not extensive enough. Only the most fundamental elements are written. There is not enough pertinent information delivered for the reader to absorb a firm understanding about air transportation.
The problem is that this 500 page book covers an awful lot of technical material. He selectively crammed it all into 500 pages. Some important elements are missing. The title of the book should be more concise about which audience the author wanted to attract, and spread all his great information into two brilliantly-written volumes.

Book Description
William T. Loomis examines all surviving Athenian wages, salaries, welfare payments and other labor costs to determine what people really were paid for various kinds of work and allowances. These determinations, in turn, enable the author to cast a new and authoritative light on three controversial questions: Was there a "standard wage" in Athens? Were there periods of inflation and deflation? Did Athenians have an "embedded" or a "market" economy?
Individual chapters critically examine each surviving wage or other payment in thirteen job categories, including public office holders; soldiers and sailors; priests, oracles, and seers; overseers, architects, and other salaried construction personnel; and prostitutes and pimps. Three additional chapters then consider whether there was a "standard wage," inflation and deflation in Athens, and the implications of these conclusions for the hotly debated question about the nature of the Athenian economy.
This is the first comprehensive study of Athenian labor and welfare costs since August Böckh's Die Staatshaushaltung der Athener (1886). An updated critical study has been much needed, to take account of the greatly expanded evidence (Aristotle's Constitution of the Athenians, more than a dozen other papyrus texts and hundreds of inscriptions), and the uneven quality of the sources. This collection allows William T. Loomis to argue--contrary to prevailing scholarly opinion--that there never was a "standard wage" at Athens.
"This volume will be a significant contribution to all studies of ancient Greek civilization." --Alan L. Boegehold, Brown University
William Loomis is Visiting Professor of Classics, University of Michigan.

Excellent Academic Dissertation: not for the casual reader........2001-12-07
This book is definitely not for the casual reader.
As a student of Ancient Greek history it has been invaluable in providing a comprehensive guide to the types of professions, wages and the changes over time but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone other than those with a good knowledge of Ancient Greece or students. The book itself is completely referenced and well structured for academics and students. Classical Greek is a necessity as much of the primary evidence is reproduced in Greek and is not translated.
It is not a book that you can just pick up and read, but it is a most useful reference guide for this basic economic information.

great.......2007-02-13
I rescue dogs. I normally do o.k. in finding good homes but I had to do better when I got up to 9 and could not find homes for them. I bought this book. Studied the technique. Now I have families fighting over who gets my dogs. Great. It's all in the presentation. These are examples.
more poetry and pictures than instruction.......2002-12-06
Let me begin by saying that I am a HUGE fan of the Wizard of Ads trilogy. I found them inspirational, educational, and fascinating to read. I noticed a drastic improvement in my writing techniques because of them. This book, however, I did not enjoy very much. The opening chapters are reprints of ones in the previous books followed by pages of photos with submitted stories behind them. While some of the captions were great to read, I found myself quickly bored and never quite made it to the end. I purchased the book under the assumption that it was in same genre of the trilogy rather than a coffee table book- which, admittedly was my mistake- but it just wasn't for me. On a positive note, having an example of the techniques never hurt anyone; and all the proceeds go to charity.
No text, no techniques... just pictures and captions.......2002-09-14
A total waste of money! I believed the subtitle of this book: "... Techniques..." There are no valuable or original techniques here, and next to no explanations about how to write.
If you're looking for how-to on writing, DO NOT get this book.
The Magic Man - Wizard of Ads - Roy H. Williams.......2002-04-29
If you haven't read a book by the Wizard yet, you really should. Once you start reading you'll never want to stop. It covers some of the concepts that exist in the other Wizard of Ads books such as "Seussing" "Being Monet" and "Frosting" as well as more concepts and then a plethora of "literary snapshots" to accompany black and white photographs. It is not only another book I wouldn't want to live without for information purposes but it also manages to stir up creativity and emotions through the writing. It also reminds me of a magazine I once had a subscription to, The Sun.

Book Description
Stochastic models are everywhere. In manufacturing, queuing models are used for modeling production processes, realistic inventory models are stochastic in nature. Stochastic models are considered in transportation and communication. Marketing models use stochastic descriptions of the demands and buyer's behaviors. In finance, market prices and exchange rates are assumed to be certain stochastic processes, and insurance claims appear at random times with random amounts.
To each decision problem, a cost function is associated. Costs may be direct or indirect, like loss of time, quality deterioration, loss in production or dissatisfaction of customers. In decision making under uncertainty, the goal is to minimize the expected costs. However, in practically all realistic models, the calculation of the expected costs is impossible due to the model complexity. Simulation is the only practicable way of getting insight into such models. Thus, the problem of optimal decisions can be seen as getting simulation and optimization effectively combined.
The field is quite new and yet the number of publications is enormous. This book does not even try to touch all work done in this area. Instead, many concepts are presented and treated with mathematical rigor and necessary conditions for the correctness of various approaches are stated.
Optimization of Stochastic Models: The Interface Between Simulation
and Optimization is suitable as a text for a graduate level course on Stochastic Models or as a secondary text for a graduate level course in Operations Research.

Super Easy to Understand.......2005-09-17
I am taking Medical Coding classes. The book we have @ school is completely Hard to understand. And oddly enough our teacher teaches out of this book, "Glencoe Medical Insurance: Coding"... Therefore, I bought it. I recommend this book over any others if you are trying to get the hang of the "whys and hows" of coding.
The title of the other book that is required by my school and also is the Super Extra hard to understand one... is Icd-9-Cm Coding Handbook, Without Answers 2004 by Faye Brown...
