Hi! I borrowed this book from a professor at a class I was taking. At first I was disappointed; I was looking for some concise information on teaching in the block schedule. Instead, I found this book to be a broad resource containing much educational reference material (such as Bloom's taxonomy, Gardner's multiple intelligences, etc.) as well as an excellent in-depth overview of teaching in the block schedule. The format of the book is interesting, too. The chapters are laid out using the analogy of putting on a play. You'll have to look at it to see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2004-05-19

If you're in the same industry as me don't waste your time buying or reading this book! If you're in another idustry, state or country it will be the most valuble knowledge you will ever gain.

4 out of 5 stars Useful But Takes Work.......2000-11-16

This book provides a framework for negotiation. It seems to be in line with the Harvard "Getting to Yes" model. The implementation requires some effot, but seems to reflect the latest thinking on the subject. I highly recommend this book for anybody who wishes to negotiate from a framework rather than winging it. Some of the material is obscure and somewhat mechanical in the interaction process it describes. But with effort, it can be incorporated into your business knowledge.

        Book Description

After World War II a select number of countries outside Japan and the West--those that Alice Amsden calls "the rest"--gained market share in modern industries and altered global competition. By 2000, a great divide had developed within "the rest", the lines drawn according to prewar manufacturing experience and equality in income distribution. China, India, Korea and Taiwan had built their own national manufacturing enterprises that were investing heavily in RandD. Their developmental states had transformed themselves into champions of science and technology. By contrast, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico had experienced a wave of acquisitions and mergers that left even more of their leading enterprises controlled by multinational firms. The developmental states of Mexico and Turkey had become hand-tied by membership in NAFTA and the European Union. Which model of late industrialization will prevail, the "independent" or the "integrationist," is a question that challenges the twenty-first century.

              Book Description

A practical guide to winning the public relations war in business

In The Court of Public Opinion is a lively and practical guide for anyone involved in high-stakes litigation. Given the increasingly litigious, media-saturated business environment, companies and high-profile individuals need protection-not just in the courthouses, but in the court of public opinion. Using examples from many of the most famous cases in the past several years, In The Court of Public Opinion contains real-life strategies that CEOs, lawyers, and other executives can use when they find themselves in a high-profile lawsuit. James F. Haggerty, one of the nation's leading attorney/PR pros, offers advice on public relations strategies that will help businesses and individuals save their reputations as well as their livelihood.

James F. Haggerty (New York, NY) is an attorney and CEO of the PR Consulting Group in New York. He has been working with legal and litigation issues for more than fifteen years and has been involved in many high-profile legal disputes, including the Ronald Perelman/Patricia Duff divorce and the Screen Actors' Guild strike against the advertising industry. His writing on communications issues has appeared in The New York Times, the National Law Journal, and PR Week.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars it takes one to know one.......2003-05-20

Jim Haggerty's book is just what the doctor ordered for these post Enron, Andersen, Healthsouth days where corporate responsibility has become an oxymoron. As a practicing lawayer and public relations pro, Jim bridges the gap between what companies think they should say when a crisis occurs, what PR firms typically counsel their clients to say and what the law permits. This is MUST reading for anyone working in Corporate America today. And, it's fun reading for the casual reader. It makes for a grerat plane ride companion.

5 out of 5 stars An incisive, informative and entertaining read.......2003-05-08

This work is a must-read for any executive with direct responsibility for shaping public perception of their company and any attorney who must navigate a court system that has, like it or not, become increasingly media-driven.

In The Court of Public Opinion features an engaging mix of real-world examples and solid communications strategy. Mr. Haggerty provides a clear and decisive action plan that can be adapted to almost any litigation situation, and offers examples of common mistakes that both attorneys and executives make in the face of media scrutiny. His style is engaging and entertaining, making the book a fun, fast read. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Smart, Incisive Guide to "Media Age" Litigation.......2003-04-30

Haggerty's book is a 'must-read' for any professional concerned about protecting their business' hard-won reputation in the face of high profile litigation. The author's real-life case studies showcase many intriguing cases that were tried in the media prior to being tried in the courts! Through an engaging mix of case studies, analysis and personal stories, Haggerty provides insight into how media coverage is used as a powerful weapon in the litigator's arsenal, and practical advice on how to leverage public relations as part of your litigation strategy.

              5 out of 5 stars Perspective from a PR-Legal Pro.......2003-04-27

Jim Haggerty is an ace public relations professional and legal consultant. He successfully conveys in his new book the heightened role communications management plays in affecting the outcome of a litigation. Simply put, lawyers, business executives and even professional investors need to be more strategic about the communications aspects of legal disputes.

In the Court of Pubic Opinion provides much needed perspective into how thoughtful lawyers and their clients manage legal communications and media relations. Haggerty, who I have worked with closely, rightly suggests that outside and in-house attorneys representing either plaintiffs or defendants, who believe they can "finesse" the press without the necessary tools, may be allowing their egos to undermine their legal expertise. Court battles will never look the same after reading this accessible and often humorous book.

                Book Description

This book gathers together research from three key application themes of modelling in operational research - modelling to support evaluation and change in organisations; modelling within the development and use of organisational information systems; and the use of modelling approaches to support, enable and enhance decision support in organisational contexts. The issues raised provide valuable insight into the range of ways in which operational research techniques and practices are being successfully applied in today's information-centred business world. Description:
This paper deals with the problem of modelling in a formal way the concept of excess profit. A common idea is that excess profit is an unequivocal concept, being the difference between profit and costs, where all types of costs are taken into account, included the opportunity cost, i.e. the profit the entrepreneur would obtain if she invested in another business. This paper aims at showing that this difference is not univocal and that different approaches may be followed to give voice to such a notion. It turns out that two different interpretations are possible. The one existing in the literature is well described by Preinrich (1938. Annual survey of economic theory: the theory of depreciation. Econometrica 6 (1), 219-241); Edwards and Bell (1961. The Theory and Measurement of Business Income Berkeley, University of California Press) and, more recently, in the financial literature, by Stewart (1991. The Quest for Value: the EVA(TM) Management Guide, HarperCollins, Publishers Inc.). The interpretation here provided gives rise to a different way of modelling the notion of excess profit. While the existing models are tied to the financial literature, the model here presented is more akin to a microeconomic perspective. The paper focuses on the formal relations among the various models and necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the integration of all models in the systemic framework here adopted.

                      Book Description

Since the late 1908s many US states have sought to incrementally reform their health insurance markets. The intent of such reform has been quite straightforward: to ensure access to affordable health insurance by addressing insurer practices perceived to be exclusionary. In the light of this, a compelling public policy issue is whether these efforts to address disparities in the population's access to health insurance have been successful.

This volume provides a critical assessment of the current state of knowledge on insurance market reforms that is accessible of the current state of knowledge on insurance market reforms that is accessible to both policymakers and reserachers. The contributions provide a critical evaluation of empirical research findings, applied methodologies, and policy implications associated with state reform of small group and individual insurance markets.

With contributions from internationally respected health economists, as well as industry, regulatory, and consumer representatives, this book will prove to be a useful read for all those with an interest in the economics of healthcare.

                        Description:
The past decade witnessed major changes in state laws governing the sale of health insurance to small employers. States took measures to restrict insurers' ability to distinguish between high and low-risk customers because of concern about the low rate of coverage among workers in small firms, the high prices in the small-group market and the absence of federal health reform. Using both individual-level and employer-level data, I test predictions about the effect of reforms on the employer-provided health insurance market. I estimate these effects for small firms and their workers using large firms and their workers in the same states, as well as large and small firms and their workers in non-reform states, as comparison groups. I find the reforms decreased the rate of employer coverage on average for workers in small firms by less than two percentage points. Within small firms, low-expenditure individuals experienced a larger decline in the rate of coverage through their employer, while the coverage rate of high-expenditure individuals rose slightly in some specifications. There is also evidence that comprehensive reforms increased premiums slightly for small employers, and that most of this increase was passed on to workers through higher employee contributions.

                            Description:
A specific focus for state regulations of the small group insurance market was to increase offers and stabilize premiums for firms with high-risk workers. We examine the effect of reforms implemented from 1993 through 1996 on the likelihood of employer sponsored insurance coverage. We find that packages of reforms that included both guaranteed issue of some products and some form of rate variance restriction had significant positive effects (4.5 percentage points) on ESI coverage for high-risk compared with low-risk workers within small firms and a small negative effect (-1.7 percentage points) on low-risk workers in small compared with large firms. The mechanism for these effects was an increase in take-up, rather than offer. Reform packages that included both guaranteed issue of all products and rate variance restrictions had similar effects overall, although they did not meet criteria for significance. These effects seemed to act through increased offer rather than take-up.
