Customer Reviews:
Useful for studying. Works best when used alongwith a Phone/PDA software.......2005-11-20
The flash cards help a lot since they are quite effective in learning. However, they are somewhat of a pain to carry. Consider using along-with GRE Tough Words application (available at Handango) which works on almost all cellphones and does the same in a much more convenient form factor and can be used whenever you have a few spare minutes.
Not Impressed.......2000-10-24
This book contains around 900 different words. It is organized as flashcards in a bookform, with 3 words on every page. If you are disorganized and always lose your flashcards, I guess that this is the book for you. However, I was disappointed at having a lot of semi-flashcards that where too soft to be cut out, and that I could not organize as I wanted. Moreover, I found that many of the words were too easy (almost one third) even though I am not a native speaker. So native speakers must find this level ridiculously easy. The book claims to be "interactive". With that word it refers to a line beneath each word where you can feel free to write your own definition. Then again I just guess that my definition of interactive is disparate to the others definition.
Too Basic and Too Floppy.......2000-10-20
The level might be appropriate for the some non-native speakers. But many of the words are way too easy for most people who went to college (this include words like ethnic, exemplary, passive, ideology, profound). Don't buy this book if you want flashcards. It provides you with flashcards in a book version which the authors thinks is beneficial: you don't lose them, you have an index, etc. Since the paper is too soft, you can't cut them out and use them as regular flashcards. If you like this book version idea and if you English is mediocre, well, only then I would consider buying this book.

Explains key ideas.......2004-08-04
With globalisation being an increasing fact of life in many economies, people studying management issues may want to check out this text. A very up to date analysis of how to compete in a global marketplace. From deciding strategic issues like whether to outsource a corporate function, or perform it inhouse. And, if outsourcing, on what basis to decide on picking such a supplier.
The issues raised in the book are not easy to deal with. It does not make light of the complexity of succeeding. Hitt does a good job of explaining the key ideas.

Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2005-03-30
This book is a series of short essays about the elements that contribute to good advertising. The 22 "laws" are really not laws at all. Each one is an informative, inspirational article about a particular point in advertising's creative or management process. Separate contributors wrote each of the 22 "laws." Author Michael Newman identifies each writer as an accomplished ad industry pro. As a result, this book offers some good examples of ads from a worldwide perspective, which is especially important since the industry seems to be floundering globally. The essays are short, often interesting, but sometimes unevenly focused. Some contributors took their assignment more seriously than others did, and a few should never have even made it into the book. But we think most advertising professionals will find something inspirational here.

Book Description
The virtual organization is a form where only what is used has to be paid for. It has the capability of the real organization, but does not itself have the tangible facilities and permanent employees that is the traditional way of meeting the requirements of customer. It is a concept which gives flexibility, lower overall cost, and reduces the capital needs of a business. It is equally applicable to new and established businesses, and can provide both with a means of achieving success in business development and renewal.
Like others in this series, this book provides a practical guide for managers and entrepreneurs. It shows how those with vision and energy, who do not have the facilities of a large traditional company, can nevertheless achieve success, with no competitive disadvantages. The book shows how to expand and grow without enlarging the organization, and how to gain access to competences without employing more staff.
Well illustrated with case histories and examples, the book reflects the experience of the authors in actually applying the concepts they write about. Checklists and questionnaires are provided where they are helpful. Practical experience is supported by research, and the result is a practical guide to setting up and managing this new form of organization.
'Bo Hedberg is again out in front and leading us into the future of management. Managerial insight and advanced technology are making it possible to create coalitions with the advantages of both markets and hierarchical organizations. In this book, Hedberg and his colleagues explain how these coalitions work and what they need to work best'. William H. Starbuck, ITT Professor of Creative Management, Stern School of Business, New York University
'Professor Hedberg's and his colleagues' pioneering work in identifying and highlighting what makes virtual organizations tick is very timely. The competitive environment in financial services requires that highly motivated professionals voluntarily share their best ideas and dreams with their leaders to ensure customer satisfaction. The authors have rightly identified this crucial point in our success story.' Jan R. Carendi, Senior Executive Vice president, Skandia AB and Chief Executive Officer, Skandia Assurance & Financial Services.

Book Description
For decades, policymakers at all levels of government have struggled to meet citizens' demands to contain the costs of health care, expand access to coverage and services, and maintain quality. Legislators' efforts to fix the current system have produced many counter-productive responses. Consumers have little freedom and few choices in purchasing health care. Empowering Health Care Consumers through Tax Reform offers a solution to this problem by proposing a system that provides a dynamic and competitive marketplace in which consumers make their own health care decisions. This book examines the option created by the intersection of health policy and tax reform.
Health policy analysts, economists, employer group and union representatives, physicians, and political leaders examine the crucial link between two major domestic policy issues to explore a revolutionary idea: that health-care costs can be contained and access to care vastly expanded by joining health care reform with tax reform. The contributors describe the distortions in the health care system caused by our current tax policy and paint their vision of a vibrant and responsive free-market system.
This vision of tax reform coupled with health reform is offered as a win-win scenario for consumers, the medical profession, policymakers, and the future U.S. health care system.
"This book shows how tax reform can lead to more appropriate and more affordable health insurance. It is worth careful reading by our policy makers and by anyone concerned with health care in America." --Martin Feldstein, Professor of Economics, Harvard University and Former Chairman, President's Council of Economic Advisors
Grace-Marie Arnett is president of the Galen Institute, a public policy research organization based in Alexandria, Virginia, that focuses on health and tax policy.
Customer Reviews:
No Demagoguery, Just Common-Sense Solutions.......2000-09-07
Health care reform has been a prominent issue in this year's presidential election and will be a top priority for the next administration. In spite of the campaign rhetoric, however, a political consensus armed with concrete solutions has remained elusive. The largest push for health care reform has come from liberal Democrats. They claim that working Americans fork over too much money to a health care system that is low in quality and leaves too many out in the cold. To some extent, these critics are correct. Health care costs have been surging for years and there is a disturbing number of Americans who do not have insurance. These trends are especially alarming with the graying of the Baby Boom generation. Unfortunately, the shortcomings of our health system have become an excuse for more government intervention in the economy. Nearly all of the reform proposals in Washington insist on tighter government control over an industry which wields the power of life and death - literally. The new power would then rest in bureaucracies possessing the compassion of the IRS and the efficiency of the post office. For those Americans who support reform but suspect the ability of Washington, this book will raise your conscience and offer real solutions. The theme is that shortcomings in our health care system do not imply that the private sector can not work in this part of the economy. The authors point out that, surprisingly, the private market has never been given a chance to work here. Health care is actually the most regulated industry in America. The authors suggest that instead of imposing more regulation and adding more levels of bureaucracy, policymakers should take a more original approach. They recommend reforming the tax code by injecting an ounce of capitalism and a pound of reality to the system. One specific reform would be to eliminate the peculiar rule that employer contributions to group health insurance doesn't count as taxable income for employees. This tax ruling, an historical accident arising out of World War II, has created a strong incentive for the private health insurance market to be organized around employment-based groups. This preference, according to the authors, is at the root of the many of our problems. The policy distorts the health care marketplace. It undermines cost consciousness by disguising the true cost of medical care. Insufficient health care is subsidized. Further, the current law discriminates against the self-employed, the unemployed, and those whose employers don't offer health insurance. This subsidy, worth close to $100 billion a year, is highly regressive: It provides a generous subsidy for the chief executive of a company and little for a young couple struggling to make ends meets. The authors suggest that the $100 billion should be returned immediately to citizens in the form of a tax credit, deduction, or voucher for purchasing health insurance. By giving consumers more direct control over their health coverage, it would enable them to force change through the market rather through the political system. This reform would give individuals more choice and create new incentives for a consumer-driven market that is more efficient and more dignified. Of course, eliminating the employer subsidy and other reforms aren't a panacea. There are trade-offs involved; some Americans may lose privileges while others gain. But the authors are confident that these policy reforms would cut costs and increase coverage while also removing Washington from another area where it doesn't belong. Clearly, public education is needed. The stalemate over the issue will not continue indefinitely. Either Washington will create more meddlesome and burdensome federal health programs or it will fix the distortions in the private market, as advocated in this book. In this life-and-death matter, the political judgement is much in doubt.

Book Description
Baumer and Poindexter’s, Legal Environment of Business in the Information Age, 1e, is the legal environment text for the 21st century. In the next few years, many of the laws that comprise the legal environment of business will change, and the pace of the change is likely to be quick. Because of the growth of information technology, many legal issues have emerged and are occupying center stage. Baumer/Poindexter targets future managers who will be dealing with information technology in some way, and reinforces the latest trends in business education by providing a similar experience with law. Legal Environment of Business in the Information Age places an emphasis on the manner in which regulatory law deals with changes in technology, and devotes significantly more attention to E-Commerce contract law and legal protection of intellectual property.

Insightful; useful; interesting.......2001-06-22
No one knows Woodrow Wilson as the late Athur Link knew him. Link, a Princeton historian, was chosen to edit The Papers of Woodrow Wilson, perhaps the largest collection of presidential documents and references ever assembled. From 1963-93 he and a team of researchers cataloged the collection. Toward the end of the project, Professor Link had an extended conversation with journalist James Robert Carroll who recorded, edited and presented the result in this fascinating short volume.
Link shares many insights with Carroll. We learn that Wilson typed many of his own letters; that most of his speeches were not written in advance, so that staff members had to scrambled to recreate copies afterward. Wilson taught himself shorthand, facilitating note taking. Link believes Wilson sustained small strokes very early in the century and that his obstinacy over accepting modifications to the World War I peace treaty stemmed not from ideological animosity toward Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and others, but rather from typical after match symptoms from his major stroke of October 2, 1919. He contends also that Edith Wilson did not make policy decisions for her ailing husband. Rather, she regulated who could see him and for how long, in an effort to provide him maximum rest and a calm atmosphere.
This book is not only interesting, but also useful for students of the presidency and for learning about the work techniques of a famous historian.
Fascinating behind-the-scenes view.......2001-01-01
A fascinating behind-the-scenes view of Woodrow Wilson's life and afterlife, via a freeflowing conversation with Arthur Link, the late great Wilson biographer and editor of the amazing Wilson Papers. Link knew more about Wilson's life than anyone - perhaps more even than Wilson himself - and here he tells engaging and revealing stories about Wilson's rise from scholar and college president to New Jersey governor and president of the United States, culminating in his heroic fight for the League of Nations in 1919. We get rare glimpses of Wilson's childhood, loves, marriages, his intellectual life, and the impact of illness - including a series of strokes - on his presidency well before his dramatic collapse at the height of the League campaign. Link also describes his own leading role in one of the greatest editorial feats of all time - the nearly 70 volumes of the Wilson papers - documents written by, for, and about Wilson - which give us as complete and rounded a picture as we have of the life of any president - indeed of any human being. From their modest origins in the late 50s, when Link had little inkling of the scope of the task he'd rather casually undertaken, to their waxing with the publication of two massive, brilliantly annotated volumes a year, to the end in the early 90s, with the image of Link at his desk editing the last volumes almost singlehandedly (and by hand! - no computers), Link tells us in entertaining style how it was done, both the careful planning and the serendipity - including the thrilling discovery of a lost trove of papers from Wilson's childhood and early career in a forgotten upstairs closet of his Washington house. Tedium at times there was, Link acknowledges, but his unflagging enthusiasm and devotion shine through this conversation, as does his admiration, tempered by real discernment and almost infinite knowledge, of Wilson's character, achievements, and legacy. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in history and in how it's made - how leaders live it and how scholars write it.

Opens Your Eyes.......2004-01-12
I want to preface this review by saying I grew up at the same time of Mark's fight and in the neighboring town the Hoyles' crusade ignorance took place. I remember hearing everything that was being said about the family and read everything being written about Mark's story.
Jay Hoyle's story of his beloved son Mark was the first book that ever made me cry. Written from his perspective, Jay Hoyle does an incredible job of telling his family's difficult story in a small, unknowing town. Mark was one of the first people in southeastern Massachusetts to contract AIDS, and not much was known about the disease at the time. The family had to battle an entire town and region for acceptance, but their story took a backseat to Ryan White, who became nationally known for his battle against society at the same time. The Hoyles' story is inspirational and touching and will make anyone who reads it question their thoughts and beliefs on certain things in this world.
"Mark" is a wonderfully touching account of a family's struggle with a disease many people knew little about. Jay Hoyle holds nothing back in this memoir and the family's story will inspire anyone who reads it. From the first time Mark started getting sick to finally receiving the fateful diagnosis, the Hoyle family stuck together and expressed nothing but unconditional love. Mark's battle with the disease was difficult, but he and his family kept nothing but optimism alive. The chronology of Mark's down-turn is sad and it made me wish a cure for this horrible disease was found.
