Ok, so I browsed this book in the library, but I just can't wait to get one of my own! I met Sharon Draper recently and as a student teacher she offered me the best advice I have gotten so far. "Don't let anyone talk you out of being a teacher!" I have read a lot of her young adult literature, and I just love her. Meeting her only cemented the fact that she truely deserved the title of National Teacher of the Year.

This book is wonderful. It's great for encouragement both to the veteran teacher and inspiration for the beginning teacher. The chapter titled "Candles" is a must read for all teachers who are beginning to wonder why they teach. This would make a great gift for anyone involved in education.

Obvious Information - useless excersizes.......2005-09-09

This book is dull and is filled with frivalous "facts," such as some people are "hard core toughies." It's full of such un-intelligent dribble. Another example, a chapter about playing "good cop, bad cop." Save your money and buy something a little more interesting and enlightening.

The negotiator as pain-in-the-rear.......2003-01-31

Overall, this book is good, but much of it is unoriginal and some of it raises doubts about the author's grasp of practice. For a start, Dr Volkema falls back on the tired "dual concerns" model of conflict style, with its blend of concern for the self and the other. The model is okay, but it has become a cliche, like win-win etc. For good reasons, many authors (excluding Dr Volkema) have at least come to reject "compromising" (moderate concern for both self and other), one of the five distinct (doubtful in itself) styles that comprise the standard model. "Avoiding" is also suspect as a style, especially as defined by Dr Volkema: "avoiding not only the issues but the other party or parties and negotiation itself." Surely you do not use a negotiation style if you avoid negotiation itself. Here and there, the book contains silly examples and advice. For instance, if you don't mind being a pain in the rear, and need to satisfy your ego, take Dr Volkema's advice to go to a restaurant and "negotiate" a dish that is not on the menu. (Make sure you send back the wine.) Don't try it in Paris. He claims that a request to check in for a domestic flight at an international counter "is likely to be met with the utmost receptivity." On what planet? He advises us to insist on negotiating only with those who are authorized to close a deal and sign a contract. Don't try it in China. Dr Volkema has a friend who is presented as a good tactician because he takes out a book and makes people wait until he has finished reading. Unlike the other blather-mouthed tricks suggested by Dr Volkema, that one should keep you quiet while you feed your ego. But, don't try it anywhere.

Theory is kept to a bare minimum, advice is practical and applicable and the idea of including short negotiation simulations (to do with your friends/family) is a stroke of genius. If you're thinking of selling your house, buying a car, or just getting a tie (ok, make that a pair of socks) thrown in next time you buy a suit, get THE NEGOTIATION TOOLKIT. It's fun and it will save you money.

Simple, to the point & no blah-blah. The content is very well presented. Quite useful as a step-by-step guide to improve your negotiation skill. The things mentioned is not rocket-science . To me, if I can fully practice what the books mentioned, I believe I would be a very good negotiator already. However, it will take some time, a lot of practice & self-reflectio though.

In the Introduction, Wallace suggests that certain enduring business principles are analogous to a lighthouse which helps ships (and their captains) to make their way through dangerous situations. These principles provide entrepreneurs "guidance and safe passage as they navigate their way through the tight straits of the economy and successfully dock their ships at the port of entrepreneurial success....The purpose of this book is to provide guidance and understanding on the underlying business strategies that impact black entrepreneurial success in America." In fact, most (if not all) of the 52 principles can be of substantial benefit to anyone. Wallace organizes his material within four Parts, suggesting a program which has a one-year timeline:

Principles of Entrepreneurship Preparation [Weeks 1-13]

Principles of Building Entrepreneurial Success [Weeks 14-26]

Principles of Entrepreneurship Maintenance [Weeks 27-45]

Principles of Self-Actualization [Weeks 46-52]

As Wallaces explains, these various principles are introduced to the reader through "short, heartwarming true stories that were shared with me by successful black and minority entrepreneurs over the past twenty years. Each has an accompanying principle to be meditated upon for a week." Each of these stories illustrates how an individual was introduced to the principle and how she or he was able to leverage the event to help achieve a specific goal. Following each goal is a technical analysis of the pertinent principle.

One of the books greatest benefits is derived from a "Wisdom to Take Away" summary at the end of each chapter. For example, here is a portion of one of four mini-commentaries provided at the conclusion of the chapter devoted to Week 1: "Despite the difficulties, all of us are endowed with three types of assets: time, talent, and treasure. All of us are provided with 24 hours in each day to embrace and utilize these assets." Wallace is quite correct when suggesting that an entrepreneurial venture shares much in common with a voyage. Hence the appropriateness of the lighthouse metaphor. While reading the book, encouraged to think in terms of the one-year timeline while urged to focus on significant details in appropriate sequence, the reader really does have the feeling that Wallace is his caring as well as knowledgeable navigator. I suggest that those who share my high regard for this book also check out Marc Allen's Visionary Business. Both books share much in common (eg thoughtful, well-written, practical, and reassuring) even as they approach similar subjects from somewhat different perspectives. For those (regardless of race or gender) who are about to begin or are now embarked on an entrepreneurial "voyage", the two books are essential resources.

I don't like Cookbooks without or only a few Fotos. I like to see what I choose to cook. THIS BOOK IS GREAT !!!! Each Page a Color-Foto, lot of Infos about the Food, great Recipe's, understandable written ( my english ist not perfect !). I like to cook with items in my Pantry. If you cook not only Hamburger you will have the most ingredient's at home. Some Fish is hard to come by but they mostly not my taste, so it's not so bad at all. Of course, you will never find a Cookbook you like ALL Recipe's but I have a lot to cook 'til Christmas from this book.

I have known Scott for many years and his material keeps getting better and better. I am proud to be a trader right now in NYC and things have gotten rough since 9/11. But this book helped me earn over $500,000 in net worth to this day. I recommend this book to anyone that has ever been interested in the trading enviroment and who wants to make money fast!!!

Not a futures trading book at all.......2002-06-11

To my very surprise, this book is nothing about trading, but the opinion of senior Exchange executives about the future of Exchanges. If you are a floor trader, you might be interested to know what technology, globalization and govt regulations will affect your job. Otherwise, you will find this book of zero value. The title is definitely misleading. It should be management of the futures exchange, categorized under business management.

I like the way Scott put this book together. It's easy reading and very educational. The people in this book are truly the people who put futures into play. I really enjoyed Leo Melamed's foreword, and the comments by Hal Hansen.
