          Book Description

A Practical Guide to Using the Balanced Scorecard performance drivers Nils-Goran Olve, Jan Roy and Magnus Wetter Since the groundbreaking work of Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton, the concept of the Balanced Scorecard has achieved increasing popularity in the business world. Previously, many organizations had built their business objectives around financial targets and goals that bore little relation to a long-term strategic vision. Typically, this leaves a gap between the development of a company's strategy and its implementation. The business scorecard, however, provides a more 'balanced view' by looking at not just-financial concerns, but also customers, internal business processes, and learning and growth. But it is not just a system of performance measurement - by focusing on future potential success it can be used as a dynamic management system that reinforces, implements and drives corporate strategy forward. In this book, the authors draw on their extensive experience with scorecard projects to provide a step-by-step method for introducing the Balanced Scorecard into an organization. This is done through the use of some of the most important practical examples in existence, with case studies from ABB, Coca Cola, Electrolux, British Telecom, Nat West, Skandia and Volvo. The desired strategic control system using scorecards that is presented focuses on creating and communicating a total comprehensive picture to all members of the organization from the top down, a long-term view of what the company's strategic objectives really are, how to make use of knowledge gained through experience and the required flexibility of such a system to cope with the fast-changing business environment. This book will provide senior and operational managers, consultants and business academics with a comprehensive view of emerging Balanced Scorecard practice supported by both business advice and a theoretical foundation. Reflections on the relations between the Balanced Scorecard and other areas, such as TQM, information systems and intellectual capital and knowledge management are also made. Business Strategy

Performance Drivers provides a comprehensive explanation of the balanced scorecard system, which is designed to help companies measure and improve their performance. More importantly perhaps, the book also includes an honest assessment of the balanced scorecard's shortcomings and weaknesses, along with suggestions on how you can improve the effectiveness of your own system and increase its chances of success. The writing tends to the dry, which might be a result of the translation from its original Swedish. Nevertheless, we from getAbstract strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the intricacies of the balanced scorecard.

          Absolutely a Practical Guide

3 out of 5 stars Timely book, time consuming style and read!!!.......1999-04-28

This book comprises a consultant's accumulated accumulated knowledge from applying the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) to a range of client problems and businesses. It uses a rich panoply of actual cases, analysis and frameworks to develop its arguments and demonstrate how appropriate and adaptable BSC is to today's business. However, whilst the form of today's business is lean, and concerned with pace and execution, the style of this book is often cumbersome and slow to realise its points and conclusions. In summary, there are rich seams of applied knowledge in this book, but the mining of those seams is unnecessarily time consuming. Minus at least one and half points for my efforts! Callum Morrison

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for the balanced scorecard applications.......1999-04-14

In this groundbreaking study Nils-Goran Olve, Jan Roy and Magnus Wetter (CERPO Management Consultants, Stockholm www.cerpo.se) introduce step-by-step the balanced scorecard applications into organizations with case studies from ABB, Coca Cola, Electrolux, British Telecom, Nat West, Skandia and Volvo. As stated by Olve et.al. in some of these cases the balanced scorecard was introduced primarily as a method of "operational control".

This study presents practical guidence for the balanced scorecard applications in some areas like performance measures, management control, business strategy, strategy development, strategic planning, strategy implementation, knowledge management/information systems, intellectual capital and TQM. I highly recommend this excellent study to all executives who have strategic vision.

For a different point of view about the balanced scorecard applications see "Emotional Capital/Kevin Thomson".

                  Book Description

This book explores the causes and nature of the industrial revolution through a comparative study of the main wool textile manufacturing regions of England. Based on extensive archival research and including several new or little-known sources, it addresses many of the current debates in economic history and eighteenth-century studies by examining how the interplay between merchants, markets, and producers shaped the pace and character of economic growth during the eighteenth century. Particular attention is paid to the rapid growth of product innovation and the export trade as both of these factors affected evolving structures of marketing and production.

4 out of 5 stars Solid brand basics engagingly written.......2006-05-10

There's not a lot that's new here. This is good brand basics for beginners or for those who need a brush up. It is very accessibly written. The examples are clear, concrete and valuable. It's free of the irritating `brand' jargon that is so pervasive in many other books on the subject.

                  4 out of 5 stars Captivating Read.......2006-04-07

As creative director of KREMEDIA: Experts in marketing, branding & design, it is imperative for myself to ensure that my business obtains higher knowledge from more experienced people in my field. D'Allessandro's book was highly inspirational and motivating, focussing upon information about the brand as a whole and drilling into elements that in many cases, one would not take into consideration. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A clever and humorous read for the average econ student........2005-01-02

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I'm an economics student Santa Monica High School and when assigned a book report on the subject, I found most of the other books I was considering full of jargon and code words that made them confusing and somewhat daunting for me to pick up. Such is not the case with Brand Warfare. It's is extremely engagingly written, very lucid, and full of funny stories. The book also works because Mr. D'Allesandro is a major-league character and has a remarkably dynamic outlook on the world for a guy who runs a life insurance company. I'm probably not the target audience for this book, but I found it to fun and insightful and well worth the time.

                  5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2004-12-12

This book is excellent! I can't ever think of any other way to explain how to build the killer brand.

5 out of 5 stars Every Business Person Should Read This Book. Powerful........2004-02-17

While this is a short book and easy to read, it does not lack substance. Being in advertising and marketing, I know the value of a brand. But as D'Alessandro points out in his book, branding is the business of everyone in an organization.

This book would be of value to a CEO of a large organization and all of its employees or the owner of a one-person shop and all advertising people. Branding, after all, is something everyone is responsible for. It is not the exclusive domain of the ad agency.

The book shows how a large, well-known brand can lose market share overnight to an Internet start up. There is much in this book that will be of great value to you if you want to be a well-respected brand --- whether you are a big business or a one-person brand.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for all health care participants........1999-09-11

I enjoyed the authors attempt to predict the future of health care which is unpredictable and which is provoking considerable anxiety in the medical field. While I'm not sure I agree with all the author's points, he presents interesting arguments supporting his forecasts. I shared this book with my colleagues, and they not only enjoyed it, but were willing to discuss many aspects of the book. The book does ignore the balance budget act, and doesn't address differences in regional variation in health care. I intend to read it again as soon as I get my copy back. This book can make a strong impression on its readers, especially physician readers, and it can provoke long conversations.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting observations on industry directions........1999-02-03

This book has thought-provoking comments on the future configuration and incentives in the industry. Klenke is a clear beleiver in Star's 80's observations, but so are many who are watching his predictions come true.

The book drags at times but, overall, a must read!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional perspective about health care industrialization........1998-06-17

This is a well thought out viewpoint about one of the last to be industrialized market sectors. It provides new and provocative viewpoints about an industry which is full of growth, alive with change but smitten with anguish as it touches nearly all humans in very personal ways; all around the world. Bleeding Edge is also a business book, with current and timely information about some of the most dramatic changes in health care since '95. The book is not a history of health care, thank goodness, it is a view into and reasoning for, the continued revolution of the health care sector. This book is a "must read" for everyone doing business in health care as either a provider or supplier. Many lessons to be learned from this piece and an easy read chocked full of bits and pieces of data and sound bites for forward thinkers. Well worth the investment!
