              Book Description

Richard Miniter skewers the sacred cow of market share and debunks the conventional wisdom that corporate profits rise as you grab more territory in the marketplace.

Market share is the fool’s gold of modern business. In reality, companies that maximize market share end up minimizing profits, while their smarter rivals earn higher returns. Three times out of four, on average, the most profitable firm is not the one with the largest slice of the market. Yet the myth of market share continues to hobble and kill great companies, while smaller competitors dig out real profits. Executives, entrepreneurs, investors, and regulators will learn why megamergers often fail, brand extensions wither, and stocks tumble. The Myth of Market Share also reveals a positive and proven strategy for transforming a company into a profit leader.

Richard Miniter recounts many cautionary tales of great companies that refused to change—and outlines the practical plans of those that changed and flourished. Managers and investors will profit from knowing why Dell prospers by treating market share as a benchmark, not as a goal. Executives and entrepreneurs can retool their strategies by examining the case studies in this book, including Ryanair, an upstart Irish air carrier that transformed itself into the world’s most profitable airline; International Paper, a manufacturing Goliath that tried to buy success; Boeing, the plane maker that pulled out of a steep dive by jettisoning its market share strategies; and DaimlerChrysler, the carmaker that stalled when it tried to be all things to all people.

By providing a road map for persuading doubtful colleagues and leading a company to profit leadership, The Myth of Market Share is an entertaining, historical review and leadership tutorial, delivering proven strategies for generating long-term profits and sustainable growth during these uncertain times.

4 out of 5 stars Definitive guide on the concept of "Market Share".......2006-09-04

The theme of this book can be summarized in pg 15 as follows: "Market share should simply be seen as a by product, a secondary effect, of pursuing a company's core mission. Market share is not an advantage by itself. It is the result of a sustainable competitive advantage, not the cause."

To support his core message, the author, using plenty of secondary research data and case studies (Dell, Ryannair, Sony, Daimler Chrysler, Microsoft, Boeing, Visa....), hit hard on the "Market Share" myths, including:-
              - Leadership = Market Power
              - Size naturally creates higher returns
              - Economiies of scale kick in
              - The experience curve improves efficiency
              - Quality management (good staff attracted by size) leads to growth

Furthermore, insightful discussions are made on why myths persist, why profit leaders beat market leaders, and of course, exceptions owing to networked markets.

Definitely a very resourceful book for those who needs to write a thesis on the topic or to make strategic decisions for any company. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for those exploring Consumer Products.......2006-03-05

I have over 15 year experience in the food and beverage industry. Market share in the malt beverage industry is very competitive. The standard measure for judging success with in the segment has always been market share. I have represented the largest brewer to some of the smallest. In representing many specialty and micro brands, market share was not as important to retailers and distributors as profitibility. This book details the impact of distribution, marketing, pricing, merchandising, customer service, branding and many other concepts. The book is full of examples from all types of companies. It is a great refresher and also can give you different views on rewriting your resume or brushing up for interviews.

4 out of 5 stars Bigger is not always better!.......2003-06-10

Heard the taped version of THE MYTH OF MARKET SHARE by
Richard Miniter, which presents an interesting concept that says that
being the biggest player in a market doesn't mean that you will make the
most profits . . . in fact, the opposite is often true; i.e., the
bottom line is that size does NOT automatically lead to profits.

According to Miniter, there are three types of companies in every line of
business: the profit leaders, which make the most money; the market
leaders, which have the largest share of the market; and everyone else.
And the goal, at least as it seems to me, should be to become the
profit leader. Such a company doesn't go in for the dangerous
discounts that sap the strength of its brands in pursuing market share.
It avoids foolish mergers for the sake of size. And it focuses on the
customer, rather than on the competition.

The above might seem easier said than done, but real-life examples
(Mobil, Roche Diagnostics, Dell, etc.) so how this can be accomplished.
As a result, I liked the book and would recommend it, if just for the
conclusion which drives home this key marketing point:

In contrast, companies that are profit leaders can usually survive and
gain a larger share of the market--as long as they continue to focus
on giving the customers precisely what they want, at a profit.

3 out of 5 stars good concept, mediocre writing.......2003-02-21

The concept is a good one. Too many times we hear that a sale must be won or the competition will get it (regardless of profit). Unfortunately, those executives who need Mr. Miniter's message the most will probably never hear or understand it.

Unfortunately for the book, the author's writing style is mostly surface gloss and generalized facts and figures that "supports" his points. He cites numerous company examples, but I walked away with the feeling that each one was much more complex than he leads the reader to beleive and there were many more variables to the success or failure being presented as "evidence". I have little doubt that he has a good point, but I don't think he backs it up very well.

Case in point: On Page 94, he talks about the Smart car and questions why Daimler would venture into the small car market with such an introduction. Actually, they did not create the car, a small independant maker did and they acquired it. The story of this independant car maker and Daimler's insistance in buying them out would have made more interesting reading and could have added to the depth of the book.

                  Book Description

Here is a comprehensive guide to the incorporation of computer simulation in all levels of the planning function of an organization. Writing for managers of planning, planners, and programmers, the author enables readers to gain an overall understanding of the potential role of simulation in planning, to apply simulation to their own particular needs, and to translate planning concepts into computer instructions. Nersesian demonstrates that for manager, planner, and programmer alike, simulation is not difficult in concept nor complicated to put into practice. The author argues that simulation is a necessary activity in a planning environment characterized by uncertain futures and rapidly changing conditions. The book is organized into separate chapters, each of which acts as a case study of an aspect in the use of simulation. The synopsis that begins every chapter provides the manager of a planning operation with an appreciation of the general application of simulation to one facet of planning. The chapters themselves focus on particular situations which might befall a planner within the general application of simulation to the planning process. Special appendices--designed to aid programmers who have not had much previous experience in setting up simulation programs--follow each chapter and provide descriptive material and the applicable simulation program. As a comprehensive yet easily understood guide to the benefits of utilizing simulation in the planning process, this book will be an invaluable resource for planners, corporate executives, and programmers.

From the supplier: Vermont League of Cities and Towns Dir of Group Services Thomas LoPizzo acquainted attendees of the Public Risk Management Assn's 1992 public agencies conference with the cost advantages and disadvantages of medical benefits pools. Since medical benefit program administration accounts for only 8.5% of total costs, the small administrative savings that pooling provides can be wiped out by the 91.5% medical claim costs. While the size of a pool is not limited, it requires 3,000 employee members for a balanced cost/claim ratio, whereas insurance companies can provide services to smaller employers.

I quit my job as a technician at Particle Measuring Systems in Boulder with reservations. I enjoyed the work and the people but felt I was not communicating well with certain engineers. Lizard (code name for one of the engineers)loaned me a wonderful book, though. It's called Pursuit of Passionate Purpose by Theresa Szczurek. That last name reminds me of the author of Flow -- Csikszentmihalyi. The Pursuit of Passionate Purpose deals with a topic Thomas Jefferson discussed: the battle between the heart and head in making decisions. I encourage everyone to read this book.

The book contains a practical method to support people in effecting the changes they are seeking. The stories of various people interviewed by the author are really interesting and inspiring.

I had been sitting on the fence finishing my book. After reading Pursuit Of Passionate Purpose, I realized no one was going to finish the book but me and I didn't have forever to live my dreams. Each day that went by that I didn't do what I loved was a lost day. The book provided the push to discipline myself, focus my day, and live what I love. After reading the book, I finished the pieces I need to sell my book. But I loved the process of living my dream each day that I wrote. Thank you Theresa.

4 out of 5 stars Good text and pictures. Other books are better........2005-11-23

`The Cook's Encyclopedia of Spices' by English authors, Sallie Morris and Lesley Mackley appears, on the surface, to be a very attractive and informative book on spices and how to use them. Unfortunately, it stumbles on a couple of important points and it is up against some first class competition.

It's primary shortcoming is that it limits itself to only spices and does not deal with what most people on both sides of the Atlantic would call herbs. I consider this a shortcoming because the authors include many recipes for `spice mixes' which are mixes as much of dried herbs as they are of spices. The Cajun spice mix, for example, includes dried thyme. The barbecue spice mixtures include dried marjoram. And, the `Old-fashioned Philadelphia Spice Powder includes both dried basil and dried thyme. The coverage is even more confusing in that the book does cover both bay leaves and fenugreek leaves. By virtually everyone's definition, any leaf used in cooking is an herb, not a spice.

A second annoying shortcut is that the articles on spices are arranged in alphabetical order by their scientific name. Sacre Bleu! I am all in favor of stressing the importance of knowing the scientific names of plants giving us culinary products, but arranging things by scientific name which no one except a biologist is likely to know is foolish. The authors repair their error somewhat by giving us a table of contents in common name order, but who wants to take two lookup steps when one should do.

A third annoyance is the fact that almost half of the book is dedicated to recipes that use spices. In a very attractively photographed book with decent text on its subject, this is a total waste of space, especially for someone who has even the most modest collection of cookbooks. Virtually every savory recipe uses herbs or spices of some sort. If you include salt as a spice (which the authors do), virtually every recipe on earth, with the possible exception of Tuscan bread, uses a spice or herb. I would want a good spice book to give a good selection of spices mixes, but if I want a recipe, I would simply not bother going to a book on spices before going to a book on French cooking or fish cooking or fast cooking or fastidious (See `Cooks Illustrated' or Alton Brown) cooking.

The shame of it is that the authors have gone to great lengths to provide the book with very good illustrations and very decent text on the spices it covers. In fact, I get the sense that the authors have overdone it a bit with the color pics. For the spice mixture recipes, they provide little pictures of each and every ingredient, over and over and over again. It also manages to cover a fair variety of spices, although not as great a variety as its competition.

The best competition I have seen recently is Tony Hill's `The Contemporary Encyclopedia of herbs & spices' which covers a lot more different species and does it with an entertainingly personal look at the world's condiments. Another excellent volume is Jill Norman's `herbs & spices, the cook's reference'. Of the two, the second is better for the creative cook and the first is better for the armchair foodie / reader. Both have excellent spice mix recipes and they complement one another so well I suggest you get both books.

                              Pretty, but not highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed, and still enjoy, this book! I was looking for a book with spice information to have available for my customers - and this book fit the bill. The book has a "clean" look, with clear descriptions of the many spices included in it's pages. I found the information to be thorough, and the pictures are fantastic!
This book is loaded with information on individual spices, but it also gives recipes for spice combinations as well as recipes from breads to desserts that include a variety of spices that are both common and a little more exotic.
"The Cook's Encyclopedia of Spices" had what I was looking for, and then some, without being overwhelming.
I feel that any chef, or weekend cooking warrior, would find this book helpful.

                                          Book Description

The book for people who aren't investment specialists, but want to invest like a Wall Street whiz kid.

The average person collects bits and pieces of information about investing--a company that's doing well today, an industry on the upswing. But that's not enough in the complex, hyperspeed world of investment today. That's why the 60 Minute Investment Planner is a perfect place to start--a place where readers can go to draft an investment plan themselves, instead of spending countless hours with a high-priced financial advisor.

Written by a Wall Street professional at one of America's leading investment firms, the 60 Minute Investment Planner gives readers the tools they need to draw up their personal investment profile. After completing an easy, step-by-step outline, readers are guided through a detailed but manageable summary of the investment options available. By the end, even the most financially bewildered can recognize just the combination of stocks, bonds, money market and mutual funds, and advanced equities they need. A handy series of worksheets and questionnaires throughout the book insures that when readers do go to financial advisors, they arrive with a clear idea of what they want to do with their money.

Strategic Acquisitions: A Guide to Growing and Enhancing the Value of Your Business is for business managers, rather than "deal makers", and explains why strategy, people, and financial performance are the keys to successful acquisitions. This book will show business managers how to identify a viable acquisition, how to evaluate the likelihood of a smooth corporate merger, how to efficiently combine management and labor teams, and how to absorb the new company without jeopardizing the existing corporate culture.

                                                  Book Description

Born blind in one eye but never accepting a handicap, Peter Richards chose a hard life as a gas main layer on the south coast of Britain. This is Peter's story in his words. It is a compelling story of a working man whose words show the complexities of an ordinary person. His darker side is balanced by humor, wit, and a way with words that goes with sharp intelligence. Interwoven with this fascinating narrative of work is Peter's articulate account of his personal life-of marriage and raising children in cramped housing, insecurity, bread-winning, friendship, love, and fighting, of his passions for sea fishing and gardening.
