It has the best lay-out & breaks down everything in the simplest way. I haven't been in high school for 8years and this book totally refreshed (& probably even taught) me on 95% of what appeared on the SAT.
Get this book if you need to know HOW to do the problems. Get another book or look online if you want to know about the extremely debated "techniques" for improving your scores based on not what you know, but on how you alocate your time during the test.
The best of a bad bunch!.......2002-08-01
Because the SAT tends to be very complicated and detailed as an exam and so most study guides tend to almost TRY to reflect this in the complex layout of their books. This study guide is different from all the rest, as it has a simple layout, a brief introduction with some oh-so-useful tips for both English and Math sections and then it divides each English section into the 3 sections within it (1 analogies; 1 definitions; 1 sentence completion etc) and the same with the Math.
After each of the 6 sections it has practice questions. Then at the end it has 3 practice SAT papers.
This is great; it's really well laid out and it's concise. There's no complicated language to get past from the author (the SAT's language is difficult enough!) and it's not as bulky and long and off-putting as other SAT guides, which are often more difficult than the exam itself. If you need a top grade, there's no book better than this one.

What makes this book unique is the way the author tackles organizational politics head on, and the sage advice given to deal with it. These comprise the main theme of Part I's first three chapters, which address the business environment, how to bring order out of chaos and engaging change. The final two chapters in Part I cover risk management and customer satisfaction - two main critical success factors for any project, but are especially important in organizational change projects.
Part II starts with a chapter that is boldly titled "Acquiring Political Skills and Building Influence" and segues into another topic that most PM books sidestep: "Building Teams with Borrowed Resources". If you've ever attempted employing matrix management or virtual teams you'll appreciate the advice given in this chapter. The author also gives an excellent discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of self directed teams, which may be ideal in theory, but are not easy to achieve in practice. Chapter 8 in this part is a well written piece on project selection techniques, which reflects the author's approach that is better documented in a book that he coauthored titled "The Project Office".
The remainder of the book is focused on traditional PM techniques, including estimating, outsourcing considerations, earned value (now part of the PMI PMBOK), and project metrics.
If you are involved in organizational change projects this book is the best resource because of the way it combines organizational change management with traditional PM techniques.

In The Doomsday Myth, Charles Maurice and Charles Smithson show that although doom merchants have been predicting imminent collapse from resource shortages as long as civilization has existed, no nation has ever fallen because of the depletion of a resource. They also show that government intervention has not been the solution to these crises. Instead, freely functioning markets with individuals acting in their own self-interest have eliminated shortages, and averted doomsday. The free market theme is the same one used by Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations in 1776, but the need to restate it for new generations is urgent. The authors concluded that a resource-based doomsday will arrive only if we suspend the functioning of free markets.

Basically the premise of the book--that where there is a shortage, the price of the good will rise and cause either conservation, a search for substitutes or a search for more of what is in shortage, is basic economic theory. But how this is illustrated is absolutely fascinating--the authors look at a series of historical 'crisis', from oil (modern age) to wood for fuel (16th Century England, and the subsitution of coal, which helped make England a powerhouse, literally) to a shortage of wood timbre for ship building in ancient Greece (forced a new design for ships), to, in a specutacular climax--the shortage of flint in prehistoric man's world! (and how it was overcome, namely, either recycling or searching for more flint).
The authors score points blasting the "doomsday environmentalists" (e.g., Rome Club environmentalists) who are always preaching only limiting demand without realising that supply can be increased where there is incentive, and for being Cassandras. These doomsday types typically focus on market failures such as Tragedy of the Commons and try to generalize from that unique failure, but I digress.
My only criticism is that the book is so seemlessly written and logical you almost suspect the facts are made up or glossed over--especially the speculative last chapter on prehistoric man, where the evidence surely is sketchy. But don't let this dissuade you from reading this short and sweet book.
BTW, another economics book for non-economists that has a paradoxical message that I highly recommend is the new book by William Easterly, "The Elusive Quest for Growth".
