5 out of 5 stars Show me the Money.......2000-07-24

"You may be worth a lot more than you think - or at least more than what's in your paycheck," begins this manual on one of the most important aspects of entering a new position: salary negotiations. As explained in the introduction, many people do extensive research and preparation when searching for a prospective employer including, creating the perfect resume, slaving over a creative yet targeted cover letter, and practicing the spontaneous-sounding answers to tough interview questions. However, the necessary preparation for salary negotiation, the last and potentially most important step in accepting a new position, is most often neglected. Dynamite Salary Negotiations is a helpful guide through the salary negotiation process for anyone thinking about changing jobs, from the entry-level high school person to a high-level executive.

Dynamite Salary Negotiations focuses on money, specifically how the reader can most effectively position himself to receive the highest compensation for a particular position. This book is especially useful because it openly discusses the traditionally secretive process of salary negotiation. In the United States especially, discussing one's salary and how he/she negotiated his/her last salary is a cultural taboo; therefore, it is very difficult to learn from others how to develop this skill. In contrast, many people will give you tips based on their experience about how they successfully engaged in a job search or how they performed in an interview. This book uses a direct style to compensate for the gaps that our culture has created allowing the reader to develop skills and techniques that will help him/her with the last step in accepting a position.

As with any negotiation, preparation is the key element for success. Nine chapters out of the twelve in the book focus on preparation, specifically the meaning of salary, myths, compensation trends, knowing your worth, rules for success, responding to ads and applications, communication tips, and resources to help the reader value his/her experience. This preparation is the most important aspect of salary negotiation. The authors state, most people are probably under compensated by 10-20% and cheat themselves by failing to do two important things concerning their value, "They fail to understand and calculate their true worth and they fail to properly negotiate the highest possible salary" (Krannich, 2). It is impossible to know these two things without proper research and preparation.

The authors successfully use bullet points, lists and examples as supporting information within the book. In chapter two for example, the authors discuss several myths about salary negotiations. This section is extremely important because the taboo nature of the topic invites incorrect assumptions and conclusions that can negatively affect the uninformed job hunter. The juxtaposition of myths and realities creates a framework that is easily understood and non-threatening for the reader. Presented in this way the myths can be dispelled without making the reader feel incompetent or stupid. One of the most interesting myths is, "I'll have a better chance of getting the job if I don't ask for much money; I don't cost as much as other candidates" (Krannich, 17). As the authors explain, "This is the `penny wise pound foolish' mentality of extreme bargain shoppers who transfer the same mentality into the job market" (Krannish, 18). He proceeds to explain that employers are not searching for a bargain but want value in prospective employees.

Once the myths and realities of salary negotiation are discussed, the authors turn their attention to issue of the reader's worth and calculating it properly. This part of the book is useful because as the authors explain, "if you don't know your value before applying for a position, you may well apply for the wrong job as well as under-value or over-value yourself" (Krannich, 48). This is one of the most difficult tasks a job seeker must do but is critical to finding the right position. The book leads the reader through a well thought out path that separates a person's value, based on experience and skills, and the position's value range. The author's give several suggestions that can help determine personal and position value including reference books that focus on salaries, Internet addresses, companies that compile salary information, and other tactics that can be useful for this type of research. In addition, the book has a useful worksheet that can assist the reader in determining his/her value range based on the research conducted. The authors conclude this section by stating, "One of the best ways to kill your financial future is by being both unprepared and unrealistic about your future salary when asked about your `salary requirements' or `salary expectations'" (Krannich, 73).

In chapter eight the reader is finally ready to read about the negotiation process. The part of the book that is focused on the actual negotiation is relatively small because so much of the process is based on the person's value determination. Once the reader has identified his/her value, the actual negotiation process is relatively easy. The authors give several negotiating techniques and examples that are helpful to people interested in negotiating with a new employer as well as someone who is interested in negotiating a higher salary in his/her current job. In addition, the authors make several suggestions regarding how to handle salary objections from a potential employer, such as "your figure is not in our budget" or "others with similar qualifications and experience don't make that much in our organization" or "your salary history doesn't really justify such a large salary increase" (Krannich, 145). The open discussion of this topic is extremely helpful for people who are interested in learning how to negotiate a better salary.

Throughout the book the authors also discuss compensation packages. These packages, that can include medical care, dental care, childcare, vacation, sick days, etc., are increasingly an important part of salary negotiations. The authors mention the importance of valuing both salary plus benefits when comparing different employer compensation packages. In addition, the book discusses ways of negotiating more benefits to balance a less than expected salary for a specific position.

Fewer than 200 pages, Dynamite Salary Negotiations is an excellent manual to prepare people for one of the most difficult yet incredibly important phases of accepting a new job. The authors successfully present the material in an easy to read format that can be useful to anyone who will be negotiating a salary. Moreover, the use of bullet points, lists, formulas, and worksheets create a more interesting reading experience than the use of prose only.

              Book Description

This reader will provide an introduction to the basic theories and concepts in the area of collaborative strategy as well as an overview of current evidence on alliances. Alliance research has become something of a cottage industry, with scores of recent articles on the subject. Thus, one aim of the book is to provide readers with a road map of where to start for some of the most important perspectives on collaborative strategy. The book begins with articles presenting a broad picture of alliance research. Each of these pieces individually provides a solid and helpful literature review and introduction to the topic. The book then considers economic perspectives on alliances, which examine the question of what prompts firms to enter into collaboration with others, and when alliances are suitable relative to alternatives such as internal development and acquisitions. The third portion of the book takes up real options, an emerging perspective which is currently popular in the strategy field as a whole, and has likewise changed how one thinks about alliance motives and what determines the usefulness of short-lived collaborations for parent firms. This section offers the pioneering piece as well as some empirical evidence relating to the prospects for this new perspective on alliances. The book then considers learning perspectives on alliances. This section begins with work examining learning within individual alliances and the competitive processes that shape the dynamics of inter-firm collaboration. It then proceeds to address the question of whether firms can develop an alliance capability in general and through accumulated experience in particular. The concluding section introduces readers to relational perspectives of collaborative strategy.

              Book Description

Although Libya and its current leader have been the subject of numerous accounts, few have considered how the country's tumultuous history, its institutional development, and its emergence as an oil economy combined to create a state whose rulers ignored the notion of modern statehood. International isolation and a legacy of internal turmoil have destroyed or left undocumented much of what researchers might seek to examine. Dirk Vandewalle supplies a detailed analysis of Libya's political and economic development since the country's independence in 1951, basing his account on fieldwork in Libya, archival research in Tripoli, and personal interviews with some of the country's top policymakers. Vandewalle argues that Libya represents an extreme example of what he calls a "distributive state," an oil-exporting country where an attempt at state-building coincided with large inflows of capital while political and economic institutions were in their infancy. Libya's rulers eventually pursued policies that were politically expedient but proved economically ruinous, and disenfranchised local citizens. Distributive states, according to Vandewalle, may appear capable of resisting economic and political challenges, but they are ill prepared to implement policies that make the state and its institutions relevant to their citizens. Similar developments can be expected whenever local rulers do not have to extract resources from their citizens to fund the building of a modern state.

5 out of 5 stars The best Political Economy Analysis of Libya.......2001-11-21

I lived in Libya for two years and worked as a UNDP officer there. Having had first hand knowledge of this country I have found few books better than Vandewalle's Libya since Independence. Not only is it an informative text about Libya's socio-economic development it is also a study of the distributive State and the very negative consequences that oil wealth can generate if mishandled. Vandewalle deals with Libya since its independence in 1949 and the political, social and economic transformation that occurred from then to the present. The text notes that the regime that was established as a result of the 1969 revolution has made great efforts to distribute the wealth accumulated from oil production among the population while promoting large scale development projects in infrastructure, education and ISI industrial development. By far the largest single development effort has been the multi-billion dollar Great Man Made River (GMMR) project designed to facilitate irrigation for agricultural production along the Libyan coastline. According to the UNDP adequate standards of living have existed for the majority of the population as a result of an extensive program of welfare spending that has included the provision of state provided basic services and subsidies for many consumer products.
Although significant, Libya's development, both before and after the Fatih Revolution, has been almost entirely patronized by the state. Whereas the government intervened in all sectors of the economy, including import and distribution, there has recently been an effort to transfer some of that responsibility to the private sector. The sharp decline of crude oil prices in the mid 1980's hurt the State's distributive capacity and made it necessary to curtail spending and adopt a measure of economic reforms to stimulate greater private sector involvement in the economy. However, the reforms have only effectively served to retract the distributive network welfare system of subsidies and services that had been one the Government's principal sources of legitimacy with the population, while economic liberalization has not contributed to the creation of a viable and productive private sector. The failure of these reforms has highlighted the institutional shortcomings of the regime that enacted them.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!!.......1999-06-05

We just used Libya since Independence in one of my middle east classes at NYU, and I just loved it. I never knew much about Libya except for what I read in the newspaper, and this was quite an eye opener. Deepened my interest in the Middle East immeasurably. And the opening line--a Libyan proverb--is astonishing in its simplicity and farsightedness. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Libya for over a decade.......1999-06-05

A remarkable piece of work. Libya remains one of the countries in the Middle East we know little about, and Vanderwalle's account is one of the best ever. It pretty much replaces whatever has been written about the country during the last 10-15 years in most academic and popular publications. It is scrupulously honest about Kaddafi's politics, and shows as no other previous account how the current Libyan leader extended many of his predecessor's policies. Well written and accessible, despite somewhat a somewhat daunting theoretical chapter. A definitive analysis of Libya since independence.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Libya so far.......1999-04-21

An amazingly comprehensive and insightful study of Libya since 1951. Goes far beyond all the hyberbolic statements the Kaddafi regime AND the United States government have made over the years by systematically putting the Libyan political experimentation in the context of Third World development. Judicious and careful, Vandewalle's access to Libya has produced what is perhaps the best book on this difficult subject in this decade. A real contribution to the study of Libya and to middle eastern studies in general.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on Libya in a decade--THE definitive analysis!.......1999-04-17

Having just ordered Vandewalle's book for my seminar and lecture course, I can only wish this insightful account of Qadhafi's revolution--and its link to the Sanusi kingdom's attempt to avoid creating a modern state--had been available much earlier. It is easily the most sophisticated analysis of the country ever written, and the thoughtful application of a modified rational choice and institutional literature to the puzzle of a seeming absence of state-building in Libya is first-rate and clearly demonstrates how political scientists/political economists can integrate theoretical concepts and factual material in a provocative fashion. In addition, Vandewalle writes extremely well, in a fashion that makes the theoretical material accessible even for non-specialists. This book is a real tour-de-force, recommended to anyone interested in North Africa and the Middle East and the problem of state creation in the region.

Another book which lucidly discusses these issues is "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made" by Colesberry & McLean, in the chapter, "Coffee! Costa Rica's First Revolution."

I recommend both books for enlightened reading!

5 out of 5 stars The idea that coffee wreack havoc in our society is wrong.......1999-08-28

Costa Rica Before Coffee is a book that clearly states that the myth of the land-holding self-sufficient peasant isn't true. Many Costa Ricans believe that before coffee our country was a paradise in which everybody used to own land and where there were no discrepancies in the society. With elegance, statistics and history; Lowell clearly expalins that coffee helped reinforce the democratic model in Costa Rica instead of undermining it.

                Book Description

Radio Active tells the story of how radio listeners at the American mid-century were active in their listening practices. While cultural historians have seen this period as one of failed reform--focusing on the failure of activists to win significant changes for commercial radio--Kathy M. Newman argues that the 1930s witnessed the emergence of a symbiotic relationship between advertising and activism. Advertising helped to kindle the consumer activism of union members affiliated with the CIO, middle-class club women, and working-class housewives. Once provoked, these activists became determined to influence--and in some cases eliminate--radio advertising.
As one example of how radio consumption was an active rather than a passive process, Newman cites The Hucksters, Frederick Wakeman's 1946 radio spoof that skewered eccentric sponsors, neurotic account executives, and grating radio jingles. The book sold over 700,000 copies in its first six months and convinced broadcast executives that Americans were unhappy with radio advertising. The Hucksters left its mark on the radio age, showing that radio could inspire collective action and not just passive conformity.

5 out of 5 stars lively and provocative book.......2005-04-09

Media historians have assumed that advertising existed to incite and direct consumer desire for products. Kathy Newman instead shows how commercials inspired listeners to use their consumer power to shape radio programming.

While the first part focuses on theories and methods of audience research and consumer activism, the final three chapters closely examine both organized consumer protest and more personal interactions between individual listeners and radio producers. These stories will particularly appeal to readers because Newman tells them in part from the point of view of lay Americans, relying on fan letters and newspaper reports of listener demands.

As someone who makes a living working with CEOs and owners, I always enjoy the chance to find out what and how they think. You have to hunt a bit, but this book contains some wonderful quotes and perspectives from some very dynamic people. Keep in mind that when they wrote their words of wisdom, they had no idea whether they were addressing George W. or Al G. It is a quick read that is worth reading, especially at this reduced price. Well...I was always curious to know what is going on between top managers and CEO's. This is a pretty good chance. It also brings forward all the main aspects of management and proprietary (...or not) managerial actions. Very interesting.
