    Book Description

"What a gift to education! By practicing the ideas in this book, school counselors everywhere can help create new descriptions and stories that will transform the academic lives and behaviors of their students."
    —Linda Metcalf, Author
Counseling Toward Solutions and Solution–Focused School Counseling

Promote students' respect for themselves and others through narrative interventions!

Narrative counseling is based on the premise that stories, rather than hard-nosed realities, shape our lives. By changing the stories that negatively label and define students, we help them open up new avenues and opportunities.

In this second edition of their best-selling book, John Winslade and Gerald Monk present even more case studies, guidance, and examples of counseling practice to help students narrate stories that "redescribe" who they are and can be. Mindful that today's busy counselors need effective and brief techniques, the authors make plain the steps with which counselors can externalize problems and draw out student self-knowledge to inform new ways of identifying and behaving. Updated throughout, this new edition offers:

Grounded in a deep respect for students, this book's principles and practices will enable students to choose for themselves the new reputations by which they'll be known.

5 out of 5 stars Just wonderful! .......2006-06-25

I have been in the field of counseling for over 12 years and this is by far one of the best books I have read. It is practical, drenched in theoretical exploration and easy to understand. The authors make their case in a variety of ways that forces you to think about how you think about labels, descriptors and how you can best help your clients in a culture that is based in labeling. Fantastic! EJW, LCPC

          2 out of 5 stars now what I'd hoped/expected.......2007-05-08

Somehow from the title I'd expected some good ways to use up one's huge collection of different wonderful yarns. Instead, I didn't like much any of the sweaters, and they seemed to be pretty yarn-specific. If you want to use up lots of odds and ends, try Kaffee Fassett.

4 out of 5 stars Love the patterns and the photos...not so much the layout.......2007-03-06

This book is a wonderful addition to my knitting library. It has a terrific focus on using up your yarn stash. Rare for me, I love at least 75% of the patterns. It has things I'd actually wear.

I do dislike the layout of the book. If you are working on a pattern from a certain chapter, you must go back to the beginning of the chapter for stitch instructions. That means that all the instructions you need for a pattern may be in 2 or 3 different places in the book. I really hate that although it is nothing that a trip to the copier can't solve. I believe all of the instructions to knit a garment should be in the same spot. It is fine to put blocking or finishing elsewhere but putting stitch directions elsewhere flies in the face of how people knit.

Otherwise, I'm a fan of the book.

          5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition.......2004-12-30

I own a staggering number of knitting books, as well as knitting software, so there is no shortage of pattern possibilities in my life. Nevertheless, this book is a worthy addition to even the most overstuffed knitting library. The approach is a series of stitches evolving into multiple incarnations at multiple related gauges. (The gauge variations are kept within a sensible range --this book won't take you from fingering to chunky for every design, nor should any pattern!) This book actually has me enthused about tackling some of the orphan projects in my stash and will be an encouraging resource on those shopping trips that end with "I just have to have this yarn -- I'll figure out what for later."

5 out of 5 stars Unique designs, beautiful projects & yarns.......2004-08-18

This new knitting book, written book by Julie Montanari, is a real find. The presentation and layout of the book is very clear, easily readable and lots of color pics, which make it a joy to browse through. Julie has selected 6 of her favorite stitch patterns and created several designs that incorporate those stitches, progressing from simple to more complex designs. Julie makes up each project in an interesting yarn fabric, discussing why this particular yarn is appropriate in this case. She then offers at least 2 variations in color and yarn, illustrating the design versatility that can be achieved through yarn experimentation.

Julie in an incredible designer, who gives the reader two dozen projects expressing her considerable ability to create unique stitch patterns, coupled with interesting yarns. Her design theory is discussed, and more importantly, clearly expressed in this collection of classic projects of mostly sweaters and vests, guaranteed to be fashionable for decades. The projects span the seasons, with several delightful summer shells, along with warmer tunics, pullovers and vests.

Julie confesses to having a huge yarn stash and sharing with her readers that passion for collecting interesting yarns. Her projects offer ample opportunity to use that stash in easily creative ways. There is a thorough discussion of yarn types, including a vast array of of novelty yarns. Julie enthusiatically encourages personal experimentation in choosing and combining yarns. Each project is shown made up in a particular yarn fabric, with 2 or 3 alternate yarns and colors shown in knit swatches, offering a variety of looks, from sophisticated to casual.

Julie offers a unique, understandable system for sizing a project, incorporating personal garment ease, and calculating yarn yardage requirements, all dependent on a knitted swatch. Each project includes a complete measurement charts and diagrams, along with very clear, easily understood guidelines for fit and project tips. Everything you need to ensure success is available and beautifully presented.

Because of her guided encouragement to expand you knitting horizons by creating your own yarn fabric, perhaps even creating your own stitch patterns, you definitely will want to add this book to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This is a truly great book........2004-07-27

I have been knitting and crocheting since I was five. I am now an intermediate - advanced knitter. This book really does combine wonderful yarn with great patterns - most of which could be knitted by a beginner. I found it inspirational. It was hard to decide which pattern to start with-they are so good.

This may be the best of the new books.

In the world of advertising, writes agency veteran Robert Solomon, superior account management is closer to an art than a science. "Account people get little or no training. They work in chaos.... Results are hard to quantify.... So much of the best account work gets done in the moment--often in private conversations, often in a quick reading of a room--it is nearly impossible to codify what makes a great account person great."

In Brain Surgery for Suits, Solomon has distilled the lessons he has learned over the years in the business and organized them into a straightforward, accessible, easy-to-digest manifesto covering the most important information account people need to know. His 56 ideas are presented in 10 punchy, fast-paced sections, and are complemented by funny, high-quality cartoons by Richard Cline. The result is a work that takes less than an hour to read, but that outlines practical, no-nonsense strategies for building and maintaining client relationships, preparing for meetings and presentations, communicating more effectively with colleagues, improving the creative product, and more. Solomon's tips and suggestions should also come in handy to sales and marketing types, as well as any professional who has to deal with clients. And although his advice will most likely not come as a radical surprise to readers, this may well be because the most important lessons are often the most obvious ones--and confoundingly, the hardest to learn. --Svenja Soldovieri

            Book Description

Account management is an ephemeral pursuit, not easily characterized by a precise skill set or checklist of responsibilities. Perhaps this is why so little has been written on account service, and why there are few sources account people can turn to if they want to refresh, refine, or confirm what they know.

"Brain Surgery for Suits" fills this need. It is indispensable for the veteran account person, for anyone new to or considering a career in account management, or anyone in between. With 56 ideas organized in ten fast-reading chapters, "Brain Surgery" outlines how to build better client relationships, work smarter with colleagues, develop more precise strategy briefs, make more effective presentations, run more productive meetings, and generally transform yourself from a capable account person into a superb one.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A new, improved Brain Surgery for Suits.......2003-10-29

"Brain Surgery for Suits" is a good book, but there's an even better one, also by Robert Solomon, that was published more recently. It's called "The Art of Client Service," and it greatly expands on "Brain Surgery." I own both books, and I've got to say "The Art of Client Service" is clearly superior.

"The Art of Client Service," includes dozens of stories that support and ilustrate the book' s guidelines for account management. None of the stories are in "Brain Surgery." There's an afterword that talks about what makes a great account person; you won't find anything like it in "Brain Surgery." There are some new chapters not included in "Brain Surgery." And there's a detailed list of books for account people, also not included in "Brain Surgery."

Like "Brain Surgery," "The Art of Client Service" is a fast read, but it's easily got twice the information. It's the same price as "Brain Surgery," so it's a much better value.

My suggestion is before you order "Brain Surgery for Suits," check out "The Art of Client Service." If you do, my guess is you'll choose "The Art of Client Service."

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Account People!.......2003-05-14

This book is a wonderful resource that gets right to the point and provides important information. I wish that every business coaching book was this enjoyable to read -- I read it in one sitting!  Although this book is written for the "Account Person," I think that it applies to anyone who has client contact, runs a meeting, or makes presentations.  I am a "Media Person," and I picked up some great pointers on relationship-building.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who works at an agency.

            1 out of 5 stars At least it's short.......2002-12-15

This book earns a lot of praise for being short, and requiring almost no effort to read. Absolutely true. It took me 20 minutes. A great big star for that.

That said, the small effort you do spend to read the book is wasted. Some of the wisdom of Solomon? Start meetings on time (#45), stick to the agenda (#46), don't mix business with pleasure too much (#4), and buy fewer, better pieces of tailored clothing (#53).

If suits think this is brain surgery, then they deserve the poor reputation they hold amongst creative people and strategic planners--the men and women in any agency who actually do the work.

"Suits" spend their days managing their colleagues--often difficult, temperamental talents. The real contribution a suit makes to the process is through his people skills. How do you develop better people skills? You become a better human being. Study the arts, the humanities, politics, the social sciences--no less an authority than Ogilvy himself recommends it. Learn to understand the big questions, so that when the time comes to understand the small ones (like why someone chooses spearmint over peppermint) you'll be more than prepared.

And just maybe you won't need advice on how to handle the vexing issue of what to wear in racy offices that let you dress casually. Solomon's advice? "...figure out a casual 'uniform' that works for you and wear that look most, if not all the time. If you need variety, change the accessories." (#55).

            Brain surgery, it ain't.

An addendum. The author emailed me and kindly offered to refund the purchase price of the book. I'd like to thank him, but decline. It would cripple the publishing industry if one expected a refund for every book one didn't like. That's why there are reviews. But I appreciate the author's courtesy, and wish him well.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for the Real World.......2001-11-20

This is a book for everyone who was ever enmeshed in a corporate boondoggle. Hilarious and candid, Ross tells horror stories from the New Economy that have plenty of relevance for the Old Economy.

Ross chronicles dot-com madness during the height of the vogue, no-profit frenzy. It was like the California Gold Rush of 1849 but with no location, no objective, no direction, no product, and no defined value - just big talk and empty promises. Nothing else I've read has captured it better. We always have to re-learn the lessons in this book. Why is it important? Well, I don't know about YOUR mutual funds and investments but mine went down the toilet this year. I'll be wiser next time.

This book is a therapy of laughter for those who have been there, eating bad food and listening to the mind-numbing drone of snake-oil salesmen. And it's a sobering warning for those who haven't. Wherever you are -- in the New Economy or Old Economy, a battle-scarred manager or fresh out of B School - this book is for you. With a catalog of anecdotes that will shrivel your privates, Ross shows what happens when you mix arrogance with buffoonery, brazenness with fear, and hysteria with money. He ties it all together with an easy-to-read analysis that is at times stunning in its insight. A great read and a great value that will leave you either laughing or crying, but never in doubt about the truth of the New Economy.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read to understand the REAL new economy.......2001-11-06

As a second-year MBA student who is interested in e-commerce and the new economy, I have read many recent books on relevant subjects. Unfortunately too often those ooks were written by consultants or vendors who purposely created unnecessary buzz words, confusions, and self-serving exaggerations that twist the truth and mislead the reader.

Well, finally here 's a book that brings fresh, unbiased, and insightful perspectives. It is written by a global e-commerce manager from a fortune 500 company, who managed his company's e-initiatives and venture capital fund. Maybe because he is very hands-on with his job, this book does not preach complicated economic theories or strategies, rather it offers real world cases and examples that makes the book simple but powerful, and abover all, REAL. It is hence very easy and enjoyable to read.

The portrayal of corporate America in this book is precise and revealing. I wonder which company the author works for. It certainly reminds me of my internship in the east coast this summer.

This book is ideal for MBAs interested in careers in start-up, consulting, and corporate America.

5 out of 5 stars A view of the real internet from the trenches of buisness.......2001-10-19

This book pulls no punches as it outlines the smoke and mirrors used to sell the internet to buisness. Brian outlines the methods used by these internet companies to obtain money and use your established company name to build their reputation, all without supplying a meaningful product. His view as a middle manager outlines the dangers company executives entertain and the burdens they place on their people when they have high expectations without understanding the true buisness model of the companies they want to partner with. See the recent writeup in the October 2001 Harvard Buisness Review.

5 out of 5 stars This book tells it like it is.......2001-08-26

Finally! A book that tells the truth about the so-called "New Economy." I'd always suspected there was more hype than reality being spewed forth by the consultants and Internet entrepreneurs. This book confirmed my suspicions. Like many other people, I've read a lot of books about the Internet and the New Economy. None of them have been as revealing as this one. The author's conversational style and humor make this an entertaining read. But don't let that fool you. There are serious lessons learned, which the author recaps in his Ten Lessons from the Front Line. His tips on how to deal with vendor phone calls alone makes the book worth purchasing. I wish I'd known about the gems contained in this book months ago. It would have saved my firm a lot of money.

Remember the last good party you attended? No, not the office mixer where the chips were served from the bag, you had to mix your own drink, and the conversational topic was the latest child-rearing theory. No, the last good party you attended, the one where there was a theme with real food and yummy drinks and decorations to match and people actually talked to you. That's the kind of party we are talking about. And sadly, that's the kind of party that is harder and harder to find-until now.

Now sorority sisters Kristina "Morgan" Rose and Deandra "Brooksie" Brooks are here with step-by-step party plans, including themes and concepts, decoration designs, menus and recipes, signature cocktails, and tips to make your event the party that everyone's talking about.

With "A Word About" specific issues such as how much alcohol to buy per guest, and humorous quizzes, rants, and Top Ten lists, the only thing more fun than this book is the party you'll be inspired to throw because of it.

Wow. And, thought "growing up" and writing a book on how to create pockets of joy every single day was extending my college giddiness as far as one possibly could!
As the President of Ohio University's Alpha Xi Delta Chapter ('84), I wholeheartedly applaud everything about this book. My book helps women to realize that every day can be a celebration, and Deandra Brooks' book tells them how to do it with style. Perfect.

As a young professional who enjoys entertaining & misses all of her friends being together all the time, this is a great book! It is full of creative ways to have a great time without digging deep into your pockets. The book is light hearted and can easily be used by anyone, but cherished by the true sorority girls!

I found that the recipes highlighted for the various parties can be mixed and matched for any occasion. Who knew I could throw a party for the Kentucky Derby? The party plans outlined in the book are easy to follow, use easy to find ingredients, and are not expensive to create. Also, the additional commentary, lists and suggestions are helpful in preparation for the party as well as making you laugh! I highly recommend this book for anyone, sorority and non-sorority girls (& guys!) alike!

5 out of 5 stars Like Rush with liquor!.......2005-11-04

I was in a sorority as a collegiate and we threw and attended some great parties in my day. As a result, I knew how to throw a great party and keep with a theme, but had some trouble coming up with ice breakers that weren't cheesy but still managed to help my guests mingle and get to know each other. Thanks to Morgan and Brooksie, I have some great ones now! I especially loved their ideas for the New Year's Martini bash (Happy New Martini!).

                                  5 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2005-04-26

I've never been a big fan of throwing one of those "cool," "chic" parties- I always thought it was too much work... but WOW have these girls made it easy... and fun!! It looks like even a non-sorority "Recovering Sorority Girl" can handle this!!
