Book Description
A long-term bestseller, this book is a pragmatic step-by-step guide to completing you dissertation or thesis during two semesters, in fifty workdays or less. It covers advisor and topic selection, proposal development, data collection and organization, available assistance, writing, and defense. The author demystifies the process and provides you with essential guidance through the rites of passage that are an integral part of completing your degree.
Customer Reviews:
I wish I had read it before........2007-04-04
This book is really encouraging. It helps you to select your advisor, committee and research topic. Then shows how to plan your project and finishing. I read it in two days and is worth the time and money.
It is very helpful to those who think that our thesis will be a new gravitation theory or the cure for cancer. It maintains you focused.
Strongly recommended for those wishing to reach a grade.
At least I'm laughing.......2007-01-10
I am one of the many who have been ABD for several years now. This book may have a very tight timeline that may not apply to all areas of study but it does make some very good points. It's an easy, enjoyable read that had me laughing. I feel much better about the position I'm in and about my ability to finally write the dissertation. I would recommend this book to anyone who is feeling run over by the process.
Completng your Doctoral dissertation or Master's thesis on 2 semesters or less.......2006-03-04
This book is excellent, it is motiviative, sensible, and plain common sense. Written in a manner to put everything in perspective.
I advise anyone writting or begining to write their dissertation or master thesis, to read it.
The writer states as we know when you are writing it is easy to keep putting things off, or procrastinating instead of using their energy to "get on with it". It is a motivation book and gives great tips on "how to" achieve your goal in the time allotted.
Excellent Overview of the Dissertation/Thesis Process.......2004-06-02
In this book, Dr. Evelyn Hunt Ogden outlines a practical, yet optimistic, approach for finishing a Doctoral dissertation in two semesters or less. She is also quick to point out that the book is essentially suited to a Master's thesis. I will point out that in programs that have de-emphasized thesis writing, instead relying on a written 'Graduate Research Project' (GRP, which also goes by other names), generally of smaller scope than a thesis, this is also very applicable.
The focus of the book is making the dissertation or thesis as painless as possible. Dr. Ogden has advised scores of Ph.D. candidates on their dissertations, and her tips are on the money. She focuses on how to strategically and tactically plan your dissertation by focusing on what suitable topics are, and particularly emphasizes how to pick your advisor and committee (if you have a choice), how to focus your topic to manageable size, how to design your study and methodology, how to minimize required changes along the way, time line construction, and preparing for the oral defense. After reading the book, I came away with a new approach to this subject for myself, and I truly believe that this book is the most useful I have read on the subject, certainly more so than most formal research methods books. Having said that, I do believe her time line is quite tight. Although it sounds plausible to complete the dissertation in two semesters, I truly believe that in most cases it may require more, particularly in some scientific disciplines where the basic research can add substantially to that time line. Nonetheless, even if it does take you longer, the techniques and tips in this book will save you countless hours if you heed their wisdom.
I was on the borderline between four and five stars as a rating for this book, and though I love the book and highly recommend it, I settled on four. The reasons for the one star downgrade ore fairly straightforward: first, the book was originally published in 1993, and reprinted in 2002, making it out of date with regard to personal computer and printer technology and methodology (for instance it recommends daisy wheel printers); and secondly, the book is largely geared to examples of educational studies (although there are a few others including biology and ecology studies) to illustrate the authors points. The large bulk of these examples involve empirical study of large populations using statistical treatments (though there are no statistics in the book itself). This is great if you are a geneticist or psychologist, for example, but it applies less to a historian or language major. She very much promotes statistical treatments of empirical data whenever possible, and doesn't delve deeply into case study type dissertations, which are very common.
Overall, this is a great book. It is concise, easy to use, and universally applicable in the vast majority of concepts discussed. I highly recommend that any graduate student buy this book and read it before starting their dissertation or thesis. It will pay for itself many times over!
Optimistic, but then, you need some optimism in this process.......2000-08-07
I waited a mere 6 months for my copy of this book and I had given up hope when a week ago the email came saying it was available. Was it worth the wait? YES! I have read almost every one of these types of books I could get my hands on (probably to procrastinate more than in search of inspiration!) and I can safely say that this book along with David Sternberg's How to Complete and Survive a Doctoral Dissertation have offered the best advice.
Chapter 1: The Doctoral Degree Facts of Life -- The Beginning Chapter 2: Researching your Committee--The really critical research project Chapter 3: Selecting the Dissertation Topic Chapter 4: Spending Money and Using the 20th Century to Your Advantage Chapter 5: Designing Your Dissertation and Preparing the Prospectus and Proposal Chapter 6: Writing the Dissertation -- Twenty Workdays to go! Chapter 7: Defending the Dissertation -- Two Hours to Doctor! Chapter 8: Celebrating, the Last Revision, Postpartum Depression
I am giving it 4 stars only because (and I hate this!) there is no Index. Each chapter is clearly outlined in the Table of Contents and each chapter has a summary paragraph at the end so if you need to cruise through and get on with it, you can do it easily (but I still miss that index!)

Book Description
Emergency Response Planning outlines the essential roles of corporate and municipal managers and demonstrates the importance of their relationships with federal, state, and local government agencies as well as public and private community sectors. Author Paul Erickson, one of the leading experts in the field, focuses on proactively planning for emergencies, particularly in the recognition and advance coordination of response to incidents instead of simply implementing emergency measures.
The book is broken out into three sections. Section 1 outlines the overall scope of comprehensive emergency planning and discusses in detail the major elements that must be addressed in an Emergency Response Plan. Section 2 examines the types of hazards and risks faced by emergency response personnel, as well as the public, in typical emergencies, and provides specific recommendations regarding the immediate and long-term health and safety of emergency response personnel. Section 3 discusses a range of issues that must be given special attention in the development and implementation of any emergency response plan including: hazard and risk reduction, decontamination, data and information management, monitoring strategies and devices, terrorism, and the training of emergency response personnel.
* Helps you to develop and implement an Emergency Response Plan
* Provides specific recommendations regarding the immediate and long-term health and safety of emergency response personnel
* End of Chapter summaries and questions provide concise information on learning objectives and a review of important concepts

Introduction to Emergency Management, Second Edition (Butterworth-Heinemann Homeland Security)
ASIN: 012241540X |
Book Description
Emergencies wreak havoc on businesses and governments on a daily basis. Whether it is a hurricane pounding a coastal community, a terrorist attack on a company's headquarters, or a hazardous chemical spill at a local school, the results can be loss of life, health, and property. How can you prevent or reduce the effects of such occurrences? By planning ahead.
Emergency Response Planning is designed to help corporate and municipal managers quickly understand their roles in proactive and reactive emergency management. Author Paul Erickson shows how to develop partnerships with federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as community groups in order to prevent, prepare for, and respond to natural disasters and manmade emergencies.
Emergency Response Planning provides essential information to help you comply with government regulations, design an emergency response plan, train personnel, use the proper safety equipment, safeguard information systems, and resume normal operations after an emergency as quickly as possible. Book Description
It's a coin collector's dream folder, with a space for every state's newly designed
quarters--arranged according to the year each was minted--along with dozens of fascinating facts. When Congress passed the "50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act" in 1997, which led to the creation of quarters honoring every state in the union, its members especially hoped that young people and their families would collect these memorable tokens. This handy folder will help youngsters realize that goal and hold onto these special keepsakes, which are being released over ten years in the order in which the states ratified the Constitution. In addition to the slots for the quarters, kids will find a description of the Commemorative Coin Program; a history of the United States Quarter Dollar; a list of state capitals, nicknames, mottoes, and more; details on how the 50 designs were chosen; and an account of how coins are manufactured by the U.S. Mint and distributed by the Federal Reserve Bank.
Customer Reviews:
Not happy with purchase.......2007-10-01
I was disappointed and had to send it back as it wasn't what I wanted. I didn't realize that it was for quarters from both places they mint the state quarters and I just wanted a folder for one quarter for each state and I wasn't concerned that I had one from each place. I didn't realize they printed them in two places anyway. Richard Risener
MORE THAN I EXPECTED.......2007-07-21
IT WAS A LITTLE HARD TO PUT COINS IN, BUT FOR SURE THEY WON'T COME OUT. I LIKE THE EXTRA SPACES FOR THE OLD STYLE AND THE FUTURE STYLE COINS.
Quarters Fall Out.......2007-05-26
What a pain in the toosh... cheap plastic is supposed to "grab" the quarters if you "simply push down on them". HA, what a joke. I turned to washable kids glue to help them stay in. Very frustrating, especially for my 5yo.
Quarters Securely Fit.......2006-07-21
Hi! Ebay has a seller whom offers a high-quality, U.S.A. map/book which measures, when closed, approximately 13" X 16", with each State that truely SECURES a collectible quarter. Great for children and adults! Check it out! Only for a nominal investment in the amount of $12.95 plus shipping.
Like it very much!.......2005-12-29
I am very impressed with this folder. My quarters stay in the slots very nicely. Also like that it has slots for both the Philadelphia and Denver mints. It also has a more substantial feel than some of the other folders I've seen.

Book Description
Using archival records, oral history interviews, and company documents, this book charts the relationship between economic change and the human experience of that change in Port Kembla, Australia, an area seen by many Australians as a polluted wasteland. Also explored are industrial society and the impact of economic decline and deindustrialization, drawing together themes of migration, gender, class, and identity.
Book Description
The Internet, globalization, and hypercompetition are dramatically reshaping markets and changing the way business is done. The problem, says internationally renowned marketer Philip Kotler and his coauthors Dipak C. Jain and Suvit Maesincee, is that marketing has not kept pace with the markets. In today's world, customers are scarce-not products-and classic marketing needs to be deconstructed, redefined, and broadened to reflect this new reality.
Marketing Moves describes the next transformational imperative for marketing-and for any organization competing in our customer-ruled, technology-driven marketplace. It calls for a fundamental rethinking of corporate strategy to enable the ongoing creation and delivery of superior value for customers in both the marketplace and the marketspace. And it appoints marketing as the lead driver in shaping and implementing this new strategy.
The means for accomplishing this lies in a radically new marketing paradigm the authors call holistic marketing-a dynamic concept derived from the electronic connectivity and interactivity among companies, customers, and collaborators. This new paradigm combines the best of traditional marketing with new digital capabilities to build long-term, mutually satisfying relationships and co-prosperity among all key stakeholders.
Outlining a framework for implementing holistic marketing that calls for integrating customer demand management, internal and external resource allocation, and network collaboration-the authors show how holistic marketing can enable companies to:
- Identify new value opportunities for renewing their markets
- Efficiently create the most promising new value offerings
- Deliver products, services, and experiences that more precisely match individual customer requirements
- Consistently operate at the highest level of product quality, service, and speed
Thought-provoking and practical, Marketing Moves shows how to build a complete marketing platform primed for the challenges and opportunities of a customer-centric world.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for teaching marketing concepts.......2005-12-10
I read Marketing Moves in about three days. This book is very good. An excellent source for learning marketing and how it should play a role in your business. A very good source for entrepreneurs. The authors are the number one source for marketing in the business world. I highly recommend this book.
One Among Many.......2003-05-13
The book begins with great promise with the authors doing a great job of capturing the impact of the internet, globalization and hyper-competition on the concept of marketing.
The authors introduce a new marketing paradigm called holistic marketing, and present a "holistic marketing" framework. The rest of the book is devoted to describing various elements of this framework.
The book dissappoints from the point this new framework is presented. It ends up being a compilation of information on business systems and applications for customer-centric marketing. The latter half of the book lacks depth. All said, the book doesn't stand apart from some of the others on this subject and is one among many.
High level thinking and writing on marketing.......2002-12-22
The book provides a brilliant and easily digestable historical overview of "old" and "new" marketing and corporate strategy. Upon this foundation the book describes the current state of commerce and makes reccommendations for successful corporate strategy.
If you have read several marketing related books, the material may not seem revolutionary; however, the writing and clear thinking in this book puts it in a league of its own and creats its value. The book very effectively synthesizes history, theory, and the current state of corporate strategy and notably enhanced my thinking on marketing.
Interesting but not extraordinary.......2002-12-11
Clearly when one looks at the book authors, expectations get really high.
What I find really interesting is the new marketing paradigm that they propose, which focuses on a holistic marketing framework that encompases: looking at value from three perspectives (value exploration, value creation and value delivery) and looking at managing activities from three dimensions (demand, resource and partners) in order to create your market offer, business architecture, marketing activities, and operational system that drive profitability.
The issue is that discussions are too focused on e-business and don't provide much detail. For example, it touches different ideas such as CRM, One-to-One Marketing, Permission Marketing, customer loyalty, and Life Time Value but they don't disscuss them thoroughly.
I recommend it so you can understand how your marketing philosophy should be evolving based on their new marketing paradigm and how it links to other ideas, but be careful because you won't find much detail. Don't expect too much or you might be dissapointed.
Nothing New.......2002-10-11
This book has focused too much on E-commerce.It does not provide something new on the issue of strategic marketing.I feel disappointed with the famous author.

hopeless.......2003-01-03
I obtained the mentioned book from University library. It is in DOS format. It did not work in my XP notebook. I wrote many times to author. He is indiffirent. I could not run the program still. I did not have this chance!! But it looks it is for year 1995 not for 2003!
Not Today's World.......2002-03-20
The Business Policy Game is copyrighted 1995 and contains a computer disk for the simulated game that is still in DOS. It is totally out of date. It teaches students to run a company in a business world that no longer exists. It offers no opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship or e-commerce. This game may have been useful for students in 1995 but it is no longer a simulation of the world that faces us in 2002.

Excellent book for business simulation.......2000-03-29
The Business Policy Game (BPG) is a simulation of a business that takes place on a virtual world where only two countries exist, and you run a company that has competitors. You are the CEO and the CFO of this company. You take decisions about marketing, production, finances to make your company the best of the world.
This book is the BPG Manual, and contains the description of the world that the simulation develops. It is clearly written, and contains a detailed description of the process you have to follow to take decision on the Business Policy Game.
I think this provides valuable experience on running a real company.
