      Book Description

The surge in the number of online training sites has created an unprecedented demand for experts who know all aspects of Web-based training (WBT) site design. Written by bestselling author William Horton, this book provides the hands-on and practical guidance that trainers demand. Packed with over 100 examples, this well-illustrated guide walks you through every phase of designing WBT, from analyzing your course requirements and assessing the needs of potential students to designing a course for a global audience.

You'll find out how to combine elements into effective and interesting learning sequences, discover how to overcome any technical hurdle that may arise, how to offer materials that motivate learning, and how to use Web technologies to create 21st-century alternatives to traditional courses.

      Praise for Designing Web-Based Training

"Horton has done it again! He's addressed the cutting-edge problem of Web-based training design with his pragmatic, research-based approach. His work is task-oriented and down-to-earth. He doesn't waste our time with excessive educational philosophy. In short-comprehensive overview, practical advice, engaging presentation."-Robert E. Horn, Author, Visual Language: Global Communication for the 21st Century

"As each new media wave is adopted for instructional pur-poses, there is a lag in effective exploitation of the unique features the medium brings for supporting learning. Designing Web-Based Training bridges the gap by providing a rich and detailed reference."-Ruth Clark, EdD, President, Clark Training & Consulting

"Designers have been seeking guidance on how to exploit the Web's distribution potential while combining it with powerful instructional programs. Horton provides structure, stimulation, and substance in this important book. Web-based training is definitely what is happening now. Designing Web-Based Training will be a de facto classic in the field." -Gloria Gery, Principal, Gery Associates, Author, Making CBT Happen

4 out of 5 stars Value of the Book.......2007-03-08

I found the book to be very informative if you are a developer of web-based training. It gave a lot of good ideas that you can copy, especially about standards and best practice. It was certainly worth the money to me.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Crash Course on Web-Based Training.......2006-08-01

If you are new to web-based training, stepping into a new web-based instructional design position, have been teaching or developing web-based training but suspect that there is a better way to do it, or you simply want to establish a solid foundation in building engaging online learning envrionments, this book must be on your shelf. I am a higher education instructional design consultant and I find this book to be an excellent ongoing resource. Not only is it full of specific and practical tips, but the content is organized into dozens of useful tables and charts. Chapter 6, "Activate Learning" is an especially useful chapter, providing lists of potential learning activities and explaining some of the reasons to choose one learning activity over another.

This is a book that emaphsizes matters of pedagogy and instructional design rather than the technical side of things. Among books with a similiar empahsis I place it among the top 10%.

3 out of 5 stars Long on tips. Weak on theory........2003-02-28

This book contains a collection of web design tips which are in the main useful but not earth shattering. Where the book fell down, for me at least, was in the area of theory. It is weak here, and that can be a major problem if you want to conduct a scientific evaluation of the work using the umpteen heuristics suggested by the author. I doubt that there is enough information in the text to adequately help one frame an evaluation of a course, let alone put one together.

The book really has very little to say on instructional design methodologies. The reader is told to bear X, Y and Z in mind and then thrown a few sample scenarios (with screen shots). In many ways this is the tenor of the whole book: a vast and never ending list of do's and don'ts and qualifications to those do's and don'ts. I have to demure from the consensus among the other reviewers and adopt a minority position because quite frankly compared to other eleraning books, I found this one almost unreadable. The book is fullof particularities that are never adequately situated within a theoretical framework. It just seems like bad science to base so many recommendations on induction.

To be fair, it's good stuff in places, and frequently relevant, but can you retain it? Who wants to read a several hundred page long list of tips?

In terms of theory, balance and scientific worth a far better book, for my money, is by Alessi and Trollip.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent e-learning overview.......2003-01-21

I am a corporate trainer who seeks to convert much of his highly successful classroom-based training to the Web. This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for and met my very demanding criteria for a 'how-to' book.

      It succeeds in that it:

      1. Takes the reader step by step by step through all of the big-picture considerations (and several subtle but important nuances) one must undertake to create an e-learning program from scratch, or convert an existing training program to one that can work on the Web

      2. Is written clearly, concisely and simply - - an absolute rarity in a world of technology handbooks that are muddled and/or require the reader to already have a Ph.D. in computer science to understand.

      3. Introduced me to small and large ideas that I had not considered but that made perfectly common sense when I thought about them.

This book made me a disciple of William Horton, and gave me the confidence that if I wanted to, I could transform my classroom training to the Web yet avoid a lot of errors I would have committed had I not read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Great Book.......2002-03-26

Most of the book covering e-learning are too much based on northamerican politics and standards since that's the reality for authors but, Horton's ideas and guidelines can be applied virtually in any country. He english is very to understand, he does not use word taken from slangs, or any "strange" word.

Chapter Organization is very good, every chapter can be read as whole unit, without going backward and forward reading other chapters because ideas are completely developed within a chapter.

Horton, is my fav. author on e-learning topics.

      Book Description

This book shows how to use computers in educational settings by combining learning theory and instructional strategies to help the reader design software for learning and instruction. The book has been extensively revised to include new approaches to multimedia instruction as well as updating established methods such as tutorials, drills, simulations, games, and computer-based tests. Constructivist and instructivist approaches are analyzed and presented. The book is not equipment or software specific. For people interested in Educational Multimedia.

Had to buy it for a class; execellent resource for it's target audience. Make sure you're a memeber of that target audience (instructional technologists) before you buy :)

5 out of 5 stars The First Book on My Reading List!.......2003-05-06

If I could only put one multimedia learning book on my bookshelf, this would be it. The "General Principles" section provides one of the best overviews I've read of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Constructivist approaches to learning (although I do think they misrepresent the Instructional Systems Design process and treat it as a purely Behavioralist approach). This section also presents an excellent overview of the learning process. The book moves on to discuss methodologies and learning sequences at an unparalleled level, including a brilliant discussion of simulations and educational games. The book closes with an overview of an approach to Design and Development that's worth reading, but far less valuable than the previous sections. Of all my design books, this one has the most dog-eared pages and underlined text; the chapter-level bibliographies alone are worth the book's price! Anyone looking to delve deep into multimedia design for learning should have this book on his or her shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent breadth and and depth of coverage.......2002-10-06

This is an excellent text in terms of coverage and pacing. If you are interested in human-computer interaction, this is a 'must have' text. What astonished me about this book is that it covered more issues in HCI than many dedicated user interface design books. The text admirably blends practical considerations with theoretical concerns and trends. It strongly focuses on motivational issues surrounding users of learning packages(an area largely ignored in the bulk of standard HCI texts). Don't pass over this book.

5 out of 5 stars I love it, it IS the bible of Multimedia design in learning........2002-01-06

I just find it very well put together.. It takes you through the various facets of designing a course/presentation that will actually be used and useful.

5 out of 5 stars The source for multimedia production.......2001-11-09

The first clue as to the value of a book is the number of editions. Generally, the true standards in a field will continue to live and be revised. This book is the standard for multimedia design and production. The foundations and theory that are explored in the beginning are as valuable as the detail in the production process that is explained. The most significant aspect of this book has to be the detail concerning methods, especially instructional simulations. Simply a must have for anyone in the field of multimedia who is looking to develop products that go beyond the traditional page turner.

      Book Description

This combination CD-ROM and workbook of technology activities for pre-service teachers is designed for the Educational Technology or Technology for Teachers course found in all teacher preparation programs. The CD and portfolio-development workbook focus on what students learn and how they learn it rather than on what teachers say and do. The CD models innovative instructional techniques for classroom use. In the process students create a portfolio of technology learning activities which they can use when seeking their first teaching assignment. Exercises range from the conventional (multiple-choice quizzes and term identification) to the innovative (online journals and interactive Web exercises).

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great idea- -but inside out.......2002-01-06

This is a workbook/CD text for training teachers in the field of educational technology. The text covers topics which are central to classroom teaching with technology: learning styles, multimedia student authoring, evaluating software, classroom management, presentation with technologies, assessment, and the Internet. The exercises are well done and promote thoughtful reflection as well as mastery of the content.

Unfortunately, the central premise of the workbook/CD package is inside out. Unlike many texts with accompanying CD, the CD in this set contains the central content of the text, while the book is merely the accompanying workbook material. On the one hand, it's nice to have a workbook for students to write in. But on the other hand, it would be much more effective use of the technology if the students could read the texts in book format and then complete all of the work electronically using software on the CD. In fact, many of the workbook exercises are also presented in Webpage format on the CD, but the vocabulary and review exercises do not appear there, even though they could easily be assessed online. (The answers to the exercises are printed in the back of the workbook.)

A more serious problem is that all of the content text is contained only on the CD. Thus, a student must access the CD in order to read the content materials. The content materials vary widely in quality, from excellent in-depth articles to terse PowerPoint presentations. Some of the content texts are a few pages long, but several run to over 100 pages. Most are not in HTML format, but in Adobe PDF, set to display as very short pages, similar to presentation slide format. Since the content does not appear in the workbook, students will either need to read everything online, or else print hundreds of short pages so that they can read them offline. Students who only have access to computers on campus will have no choice but to print the pages if they want to read them at home. I really like the idea of a CD/text package, but it would far more useful if the text included the content, while the CD focused on the exercises, with built-in automated assessment and editing capabilities.

From the supplier: Companies can improve the efficiency and quality of their management development programs with the use of new multimedia technologies. One such technology is the business simulation software, which enables managers to learn by doing in a risk-free environment. It provides an opportunity for users to apply various management strategies and techniques to assess their effectiveness without the risks of actual decision making. Another useful new technology is groupware. This software makes it possible for business teams to share information and to work together more closely. It allows users to exchange knowledge, skills and best practices. The combined use of these two technologies is likely to revolutionize the way companies design and implement their management development initiatives.

          Description:
Novak and Iuli [Novak, J. D. & Iuli, R. J. (1991). The use of meta-cognitive tools to facilitate knowledge production. In A paper presented at the fourth Florida AI research symposium (FLAIRS '91), Pensacola Beach, FL, May, 1991.] discuss the use of Concept Maps as meta-cognitive tools that help people to think about thinking. This work describes a network-enabled meta-cognitive tool based upon extensions to Concept Maps that can be used to help course designers visualize and plan course organizations. This tool permits the user to create a novel type of course description based on the idea of an advance organizer. Course arrangements created by this method do not have the arbitrary linear sequences of topics typically found in traditional courses at the college level. The tool is part of an environment that is designed to foster meaningful learning and reuse of course design and instructional content. This paper presents a description of this software tool, an approach to the creation of a course depiction from a Concept Map, an example of a course that was developed iteratively using the tool, and a discussion of the ways that the tool fosters course and content reuse.

This book applies the theories of scheduling. It is an applied text (as opposed to Michael Pinedo's Scheduling book with Prentice Hall, which is very theoretical). Scheduling is a task the Operations Manager performs and it is a subject introduced in the first OM course.

The Book of Five Rings for Executives, by international management consultant Donald G. Krause, is his third volume on classic battle philosophies that can help today's businesspeople compete more effectively. Based on an epic five-part letter to students written in 1643 by legendary samurai swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, the book has enthusiastically transplanted long-revered instructions in the martial arts from the Eastern battlefield to the Western boardroom. Musashi's stirring but difficult original treatise on "achieving competitive dominance" is given a more digestible update here by Krause, who shrewdly reorients its fundamental "five rings" into a set of seven practical principles centered on the requisite modern traits of preparation, discipline, skill, and fluidity. Along the way, he demonstrates how historical leaders such as George Washington and Lawrence of Arabia, in addition to contemporaries like Bill Gates and Howard Schultz, have embraced Musashi's ideas. The combination ultimately creates, as Krause explains, "a competitive sword which is capable of winning in all phases of business." --Howard Rothman

                Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Secrets of "Master Competitors".......2007-02-01

I recently re-read this book and Ways of Warrior Kings, Codes of Kings and will now share my current reactions to Miyamoto Musashi's classic analysis of what Donald G. Krause characterizes as the "Seven Principles of Competitive Success." Ordered Flexibility and Execution are the first two. According to Musashi, "Water is both ordered and flexible at the same time. It maintains its own identify, but conforms as necessary to the circumstances around it." Effective and appropriate execution produces desired results. Those who do so are called "executives." Here are the other five principles:

                Resources (i.e. assets and skills)
Environment (i.e. physical surroundings, terrain, and weather)
Attitude (i.e. alert as well as confident)
Concentration (i.e. applying strength against weakness, committing resources to opportunity)
Timing (i.e. effective execution at the appropriate moment)

The acronym REACT will help some to remember them. Obviously, executives in all organizations must make hundreds of decisions each day, some of which could well determine the success or failure of a given initiative. To Krause's great credit, he never forces correlations between the battlefield and the business world even as he correctly suggests that much of what a 17th century samurai swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, found true of combat is also true of commerce.

Hence the importance of sustaining "ordered flexibility" while taking effective and appropriate execution to produce desire results. In this context, I am reminded of what Peter Drucker said in an article published in 1963 by the Harvard Business Review: "There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency what should not be done at all." Hence the importance, also, of the five REACT principles, without any one of which an initiative will almost certainly fail...or at least be much less successful than it would be otherwise.

Of special interest to me is what Krause has to say about a remarkably diverse group of exemplars of Musashi's philosophies: Howard Schultz, Robert E. Lee, Warren Buffett, George Washington, Andy Grove, Bill Gates, T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"), Donald Trump, and a pair of British officers, Lt. John Chard and Lt. Gonville Bromhead. (Who are Chard and Bromhead? They led the defense of Rorke's Drift by about150 British troops under ferocious attack by approximately 3,000 Zulu warriors. They held their position from the afternoon of January 22, 1879, until the next morning when the Zulu army withdrew.) According to Krause, what do all of these "master competitors" share in common? Prepare always, recognize, reality, and take action. Granted, no head-snapping revelations there nor does Krause claim to offer any. "God" may not be "in the details" but there is nonetheless a great deal of value to be learned from the details of battles such as those fought at Rorke's Drift as well as Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Trenton.

It seems appropriate to have Musashi provide the conclusion to this brief commentary. "The ability to focus is your greatest asset in a competitive situation. When you appreciate the power of focus, you will feel the rhythm of your opponent and maintain control of his actions. You will understand his approach and effortlessly defeat him by naturally concentrating your attack in an appropriate place at an appropriate time." That is as true of competition today as it was more than 300 years ago. Indeed, much of what Musashi advocates is also emphasized in Sun Tzu's Art of War, written approximately 2,500 years ago. I commend Krause on brilliantly presenting a number of timeless business principles, each within a real-world context. Well-done!

1 out of 5 stars Book is Common Sense / Do Not Read.......2003-09-23

This book is very poorly translated to English. It reads like instructions on a VCR manual. If it were not required reading, I would never have read it. The book could be summarized in about 5 pages, but it drags on using the same examples in every chapter. This book does not relate to business. It has no direct reference to business and should not be taken out of context. If you need a business book, then read a recent book. If you want to read this book, I can summarize: Offense, defense, strategy, weaknesses, strengths. If you know what these are then you have enough information and do not need to read the book. It would have been much better if it read like a story instead of bullet points. The author could have put you in the mindset of an Asian battle field, but these details were left out. Why someone would put a recommendation on this book is confusing to me. It is very boring and hard to read. I am just speaking plainly and honestly. It is not for business and should not be treated this way. The translation to english is frustrating. The one piece to take away from the book is about leading troops. When a leader's troops are undiscipline, the officers are weak. This is common sense.

                1 out of 5 stars at 3$, it was not a bargain.......2000-12-22

I bought this book from a store sale at 3$, and after reading this book, realized that it was not a bargain. This is one of the worst management books I have read so far. What the author did is take a few very simple and mostly useless ideas (do what is appropriate? Is this an idea?) and wrapped them in Musashi's 5 rings, giving them some Far East flavor and mysticism. If you are able to see through this and if you can summarize what the book is saying, it has a very simple message, and not a new one.

The message is not new, nor intuitively appealing. However, it is also a painful effort to get to the message, because the book is lacking organization and needs editing. Supposedly organized around 5 rings, each section contains several subheadings that have no obvious relationship to the section they belong. Especially in the first 2 parts several paragraphs lack focus, and contain sentences that are not supporting each other, nor binded to each other in a meaningful way.

Several examples are repeated all through the book, suggesting that the author might be having a tough time filling out 159 pages without repeating himself. I was disturbed when the same tiger example, or the same water example kept repeating all through the book, each time appearing as the first time and explained in detail.

The author fails to separate Musashi's writings from his own prescriptions, which was very disturbing to me. Some direct quotes contained sentences like: Musashi says "the competitive executive gathers together small pieces of information...." So should we believe that Musashi, who was a Samurai warrior, wrote up thinking about executives, or organizations?

Most of the prescriptions of the author are vague and cannot help anyone except if you are trying to make a post-hoc explanation for someone's success. I agree that timing is very important, but you cannot prescribe someone to exert appropriate amount of effort, or be at the right place at the right time. These are sufficiently vague prescriptions that no one can refute, but also mostly meaningless.

The author fails to specify the boundary conditions under which these prescriptions will hold. The author argues that business is a battle, and in order to win, you need to do these. However, not all business life is war, nor should be treated as such. If you are having an interpersonal conflict with someone you will have to continue to work after the conflict, try these techniques and guarantee that you will have no future together. Musashi was a samurai, and his teachings I think are related to conditions where you are having a battle to death. Under these situations, you need to do whatever it takes to win, including Musashi's ideas such as stabbing one in the eye. You cannot afford to apply these techniques in your work group, nor in most negotiation situations. I think in this respect the book is dangerous, because a novice who decides to take these ideas to heart may start to frame business life as war and win-lose situations, which is simply dangerous and wrong. If you treat the other party as enemy, he/she becomes your enemy, and this would be a self-fulfilling prophecy. I am not saying there are no wars in business, but I definitely argue that not all business life is war. The author should have clarified under which conditions these principles would apply.

Finally, I think the battlefield examples at the end are simply too convenient. The author tries to examine the success of Bill Gates, Andy Grove, Donald Trump among others with Musashi's teachings. I believe these successes can be examples in any organizational behavior or strategy textbook, and almost in any chapter. The real success of these tactics would be shown if these successful people consciously applied these so called tactics in their business life. As it is, they don't have much meaning.

With these points, this was a book that seriously outraged me from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Strike Against Weakness at the Moment of Maximum Advantage.......2000-10-22

This book is a valuable development of the metaphor of a samurai swordfight for how to gain competitive tactical advantage in business. The author has taken Miyamoto Musashi's 1643 classic and put it into the context of business issues. The book contains Musashi's principles updated and customized for the current business world in seven principles, five aspects (or rings), examples from Japanese companies' use of these ideas, and cases (Starbucks, Robert E. Lee, Warren Buffett, George Washington crossing the Delaware, Andy Grove, Bill Gates, Lawrence of Arabia, and Donald Trump). As a result, the lessons are quite accessible and clear.

The seven principles are: Ordered Flexibility ("the nature of water"), Execution ("appropriate action at the right time"), Resources ("information is the fabric of tactics"), Environment ("approach derives from circumstances"), Attitude ("firm, yet flexible . . . centering on a determining reality"), Concentration ("concentrating strength against weakness or resources against opportunity"), and Timing ("when the scale is tipped in favor of the tactics you have chosen").

The Japanese business application of this approach is to: 1) copy technology and train people. (2) recombine elements and widen market acceptance. (3) increase quality/price ratio and dominate markets.

The five aspects are: (1) Foundation (2) Form (3) Fire (4) Fabric and (5) Focus.

Let me elaborate on the Foundation concept to give you a sense of what is in these sections. The rules of Foundation are: (1) Do what is right, what is correct. (2) Sense the rhythm and timing in everyday situations. (3) Broaden your knowledge of management. (4) Study other arts and professions. (5) Distinguish between profitable and unprofitable activities. (6) See reality under all circumstances. (7) Look for what is not obvious. (8) Concentrate on critical details. (9) Eliminate useless activity. (This last sound's like Peter Drucker's famous exhortation to "slough off yesterday.")

This book is the third volume in a series that Mr. Krause has created about how business people can compete more effectively that draw on classic books on this subject.

Musashi's work is much better known in Japan than in the United States. He was a legendary samurai swordsman who from ages 13 to 29 defeated 60 men in duels. Death or severe injury was always at risk. Then he retired to a cave and lived as a pauper writing about the lessons of his battles for the next 30 years. This book is based on those writings which were a five part letter to his followers and students. The essence of that advice is to "look beneath the surface" of the events around you to distill their meaning.

Those who wish to improve their sword fighting and dueling skills should read the original. Those who enjoy this book may wish to read the original as well. You will be rewarded by obtaining a deeper sense of the Zen philosophy behind these observations.

All business people will benefit from this book. Highly recommended!

Although this book focuses on tactics, you would do well to combine it with Sun Tzu's thinking about how to use strategy to create situations where no battle is needed. Then you need only practice your tactics to keep sharp, not to secure your advantage. For example, if your advantages in quality, effectiveness, honor, and prestige are so great that others know they cannot compete and would be harmed or simply waste time and effort by doing so, they will seek you out as a partner instead. Then, much more can be accomplished for all!

                Be sharp!

4 out of 5 stars Great Reading, But Beware Of Re-Interpretations.......2000-08-05

This new interpretation of Musashi's classic bible of strategy and tactics explains the essence of his philosophy in clear modern terms. The central concept here is "Ordered Flexibility". If you come from a business background you no longer have to read The Book of Five Rings as metaphor (the original was written in the language of sword-play, the Zen art of killing your opponent swiftly and efficiently). Of course, the principles were always meant to be applicable to all areas of life, and they still are even though they were develloped over 350 years ago.

Despite the fact that the quality of the information is very good, I've only given the book 4 stars because it is my opinion that the Fifth Ring was not properly develloped. This refers to the Void, the state of No-Mind. Remember, Musashi was a Samurai master of Zen swordsmanship, and no Book of Five Rings is complete without properly dealing with the concepts of Zen. I suppose Krause had a certain demographic in mind when he put this book together. All in all, a recommended addition to any financial player's library.

Oops! Shame on me for not paying attention to the product description! I assumed "Quilting Patterns" meant "Quilt Patterns" so was somewhat chagrined when book arrived. However, it's a keeper. Found brief comparison between Lancaster County Amish and Midwestern Amish Quilts to be quite interesting.

5 out of 5 stars CHARMING AND INFORMATIVE.......2003-09-14

Knowing that we often get what we pay for, I give a 5 star rating to this book and author for being informative: providing information about Amish quilts from different geographical areas, giving basics on hand quilting...and for being reasonably priced. This book tends to offer something to new quilters and seasoned quilters, alike. The charming quilting designs, some of which are used in traditional quilting and not, are very well laid out and the authors are careful to ensure that designs are on ONE PAGE ONLY which allows the quilter to be able to lay out the book on a scanner, or a light box for tracing. I feel that I got more than my money's worth with this book, not only because of it's information and well laid out designs, but because of the books simple usability, that saves me time.

                4 out of 5 stars Complete details.......2003-05-22

This book gives complete details on HAND QULITING your Amish quilt and some general information about the colour/quilting/pattern combinations in black and white line drawings. Discusses the threads, batting thicknesses, how to copy the patterns, and includes information about quilting frames for a full roundup on the quilting scene.

As for which pattern to use with which type of quilt, the book breaks down the differences between the Lancaster PA Amish and the Midwestern Amish. Remember though this is geared all towards HAND quilting. For Machine Quilting see the Dover Pub, Amish Patterns for Machine Quilting which adapts these hand patterns for machines.

Really quite a nice book for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Amish, pure and simple.......2001-07-12

Well laid out with design and information. A good book to have in your quilting library. Easy to follow directions for even the novice quilter. I've used this book to branch out and make quilts outside the traditinal Amish pallete with great success.

                  5 out of 5 stars Personal Magnetism.......2005-10-29

Jason writes out in detail the 50 steps to personal magnetism that explains what attracts others to us, our product we offer, and what we stand for. I have read some of these concepts before, but Jason Hartman's "Become the Brand of Choice" puts all the powerful distinctions (50) together in one place in a simple and easily understood format. I would definitely recommend this book to other entreprenuers! Joe Milunas, President of REInvestingPartners.com

5 out of 5 stars Jason is a Genius -- And a Likeable One at That!.......2005-01-11

Jason's humanly sensitive and ethical approach is commendable. You can tell early on that he's a sincere and likeable guy with loads of integrity, and it's easy to understand why his relationship marketing approach is so successful. It didn't take long for me to completely trust the author -- not something I can always say about marketing books. The book is written in a very accessible conversational style which lends great clarity and makes it an enjoyable read and readily applicable. The goal-setting tips are valuable for application to every area of life. I detect a lot of Napoleon Hill's concepts coming through ("Think and Grow Rich"), but have to say that the way Jason lays them out and applies them is even more readily grasped by me than the original Hill book (which is another excellent read, by the way).

                    Book Description

Discretionary Managerial Behavior presents a quantification of the managerial behavior within decentralized organizations. The volume provides practical insights into the internal functioning of the firm, the relationships between the managers at different organizational echelons, and the conditioning effects of the organizational controls and the market environment external to the firm. It forms a basic contribution to the theoretical modeling, methodological and estimation procedures, and empirical insights into the nature and operation of managerial discretion in decentralized organizations. Both theoretical and empirical literature of organizational economics have not come to grips with the decision making process in such organizations. With this in perspective the volume describes four fundamentally new contributions. It presents: an approach to defining proximate objectives of managers at the divisional levels in a decentralized organization and the coordination by managers at higher levels, an approach to developing a modelling framework from a sound theoretical perspective in order to reflect the postulated behavior, an approach to defining an estimation technique to operationalize both (a) and (b) in a specific empirical context, and the richness of empirical insights which remained elusive for over thirty years. As such this study is an important step to make fundamental progress in the area of interface between business policy and microeconomic theory.

After purchasing the instructor's manual to check my answers, I found errors in every chapter!! From spelling to incorrect percentage amounts. I found myself editing the entire time to find their errors which contradict their text. When I got answers that were not an option in the multiple choice exercises, I would reference the book and the textbook would say I was correct, and the workbook did not. Not worth the money or the time. Extremely exhausting.

I took a night course which used this textbook. The instructor who is a certified coder and is an instructor at other institutions found MANY misleading instructions. You can be told to do something one way in the book but in real life at a billing job, you would have to do it another way. Also, we found many contradicting statements. They say one thing but do something totally different in their examples. It's really not worth the money.

The book is made to sound as if it would be all you need to become a Medical Billing/Health Insurance specialist. Not a chance. You will need the most current coding manuals to even attempt to complete this course. And even then without the answers you have no way to check your progress. There must be better books, Keep Searching
