5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Education Students.......2007-08-27

I consider this book pricey for what it is, but I needed it for a class. I found it to be very informative, and yet an easy read.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent condition.......2007-02-25

the book arrived in a timely manner and in great condition. It was like new.

1 out of 5 stars In accurate for teaching and learning!.......2005-01-26

There are too many errors in this book. I used it in my class for a couple of weeks and found many errors. Too many errors to continue using it to educate teachers. I would not recommend this book to anyone, especially if they are trying to learn from it.

5 out of 5 stars Action research in education.......2004-07-21

I have used this book in a graduate classroom and it has been very good for my students to learn to do action research in their schools.

1 out of 5 stars Too many errors!.......2002-08-19

I teach graduate level research courses and reviewed this book for the publisher. There are so many errors in this book that I cannot even begin to list them. I could not in all practicality use this book with my students because of the multiple theoretical and conceptual errors. Another reviewer suggested graduate students get the book because it is helpful. As a professor I would not agree. There are many other texts that do a much better job discussing Action Research that are more practical, precise, make relevant connections to practice, and offer theoretical and conceptual accuracies.

            Book Description

Emphasizing what women bring to the table and teaching readers how to recognize and control traits that undermine their abilities (such as the tendency toward avoiding conflict or sending internal self-defeating messages), this unique guide instructs and inspires women to negotiate to their best advantage in any bargaining situation.

            Download Description

Whether you're buying a house, asking for a raise, or drawing up your divorce agreement, the internal pressure to "be a good girl" can drive you to give away more than you should, or settle for less than you deserve. Don't be embarrassed; you're not alone. Women buy half of the nation's new cars every year, yet studies show they end up paying up to 40 percent more than their male counterparts. At work, they earn 77 cents for every male dollar. And when they get home, married women do far more than their fair share of the household chores. It's not surprising that so many of us are lousy negotiators. From the time we're tiny, we're encouraged to please others and deny our own needs. But the good news for good girls is that many of us already possess an arsenal of undiscovered negotiating skills. We're great listeners, keen observers of nonverbal cues, and experts at putting ourselves in the other person's shoes. The Good Girl's Guide to Negotiating will help you put those extraordinary gifts to work and equip you with the self-confidence, knowledge, and skills you need to make a great deal--whether you're buying a car, or buying a company.

5 out of 5 stars A Gift For All Reasons--And All Your Girlfriends!.......2002-08-29

I read this book upon the recommendation of a friend. At first, I was skeptical since I prefer fiction to non-fiction or self-help books. Still, I trust my friend and the concept sounded intriguing so I went for it. Boy, I wasn't disappointed. I had no IDEA how poor a negotiator I really was in the long run. Here, I thought as a freelance writer and entrepreneur I had mastered the art. Suffice to say, I couldn't put the book down. It grabbed me from page one, with it's candid prose, terrific humor, and dead-on descriptions of how "good girls" (okay, like me) aren't getting what they really deserve.

I saw myself in every case study and practical example of how other women are doing better than I am in this area. I really connected to their stories. In doing so, I learned a ton about myself--including when and where I can improve my negotiation skills. I am excited about applying this information to my own experiences (in fact, I've already started at both work and in my family relationships).

I highly recommend this book to anybody who thinks they deserve more from their interactions with other people but don't know how to go about getting it. I've already bought 15 copies to give as holiday gifts to my girlfriends. (Yes, I'm a planner!) Thanks and kudos to the authors!

            2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2002-08-18

The book tells you what women do wrong but it does not really teach you how to do it right. The authors interview a lot of people who may know something about the topic but they do not do so in depth. They then string together a lot of quotes without real analysis and practical how to. I should have known from the introduction that the authors were not experts in this area.

2 out of 5 stars You Can Find Better Negotiating Books.......2002-08-18

Exhibiting all the traits of a "good girl" and fuming from my last job review, I thought this book would be a perfect weekend read. By the end, I was bored and this book has been tossed into my pile of rejected paperbacks.

This book is more successful in listing personality traits of a "good girl" rather than giving effective strategies that are sure to lead to bargain table success. There are some negotiating tactics, but they aren't anything new (listen, know how to say no, get things in writing, shop around, think before you sign, etc). Once I finished the book, I knew what made me a "good girl," I knew there were a lot of women like me, and I knew in what situations "good girls" failed, but I still didn't have an applicable strategy for remedying these issues.

For instance, the authors recommend researching your expected salary before negotiating your next job contract. This isn't new advice, and I still didn't know where to turn for this information -- coworkers, online, library? There are a few cases where the authors give resources -- but they are ones I am already familiar with or are too obscure to be useful (what numbers to call when barganing for a casket, find out what your car is worth with the kelly blue book).

And be forewarned, the entire book consists of hundreds and hundreds of anecdotes. It is the reader's responsibility to figure out how to apply other women's successes and pitfalls to herself. While sometimes entertaining, this approach is not going to transform a "good girl" into a negotiating shark.

There are few good points in this book but most of it is just common good sense.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for girls!.......2002-08-13

I plan to recommend this book to all my clients, especially those who feel trapped in the corporate world. I can see why the authors wanted to use the "good girl" theme as a hook, but both men and women get frustrated by negotiating. They know their stuff, from behind-the-scenes at funeral homes to scholarly research on negotiating.

Their tips are very straightforward and right on. They understand the world of home-buying, car-buying and more. They are absolutely right: don't accept what's offered first.
Get information. Find out what the going rate is and don't pay too much.

This is a good book to keep on the shelf. Besides the general perspective, the authors offer direct guidance for specific situations. You never know which one you'll need next.

            2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-12-14

This book was not really what I was looking for. I wanted to think about negotiation generally, and how I as a woman am approaching it, and how I can be more effective. Although the book has some limited general advice at the beginning, almost all of the book focuses on specific situations (buying a car, getting a divorce, etc.) Since all of the situations presented were inapplicable to me, the book was of limited value. Readers interested in this title should check the table of contents and excerpt on this page. I would not have picked this book if those features had been available when I bought it.

            Book Description

As we begin this millennium, the ISO 9000 family of quality management system standards has been updated to reflect a more modern understanding of quality. Originally the ISO 9000 standards were thought to be primarily a technical discipline. Today, an increasing interest in these quality standards by more non-traditional organizations has created the need to revise ISO 9000 to ensure that the needs of users around the world are met. ISO 9000:2000 represents the first major revision to the quality standards since its initial issue. Written by individuals that actually contributed to the development of the revisions, ISO 9001:2000 Explained, Second Edition is the perfect companion to the new standard. Featuring the exact text of the ANSI/ISO/ASQ Q9001-2000 standard, it will help clarify the changes in presentation, terminology, format, and requirements to quality professionals in any industry.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book.......2005-12-28

This book has a very good explanation of ISO 9001:2000 standard. It has several examples to understand how to apply the standard's requeriments. Also, the audit check list is a high value reference at the end of each requeriment. It has helped me in my consulting and training job. However, I would recommend Ch. Cianfrani to develop the "process interaction" requeriment (using graphs), for next edition.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for me.......2002-10-17

I went to the library to screen for authors and bought this book along with some others. I work in the Chemical Process Industries
and found it gave me tips on how to apply the standard in my situation. It seemed like the reasonably lengthed prose had depth. Reading the whole thing tipped us off to weakeness that sure-n-nuff the audit pointed out. It the books I've handed to my employees.

            5 out of 5 stars ISO 9001:2000 Explained.......2001-04-09

Quality managers, people considering implementing a Quality Management System and those who simply want to learn what ISO is and what it means, will find this book invaluable. It contains the newly adopted ISO 9001:2000 standard text and clear explanations of the requirements of each clause in practical terms. The authors provide examples of the application of the clauses for manufacturing, hardware, software and service organizations. They also clarify where additional requirements have been added or requirements deleted.

The audit checklists that follow the explanation of each clause will be useful to everyone: to those implementing a new system and to those with a system certified to the 1994 standard who may want to get a quick read of what they will need to do to transition to the 2000 standard.

              Book Description

While many ISO 9001:2000 books explain what each clause of the new standard means, this book focuses on the quality manual itself. This specialized guide shows you what is required to be in your manual and helps you determine how to include it in a manner that is helpful and appropriate for your organization.

One of the main features of this book is the inclusion of a sample practical quality manual. Grimes shows you how to develop each section of your manual and describes why each section of the sample manual is necessary for that company. For those who like to have a visual example of what the end product of your manual may look like, this book offers that and more.

Many organizations have already used the sample in this book to guide them in developing their own customized manual and none have failed to achieve certification. As ISO 9001:2000 offers a great deal of flexibility in determining what is appropriate for your organization, this book details how you can customize your manual to be just right for you.

              Book Description

The Ming dynasty was the last great Chinese dynasty before the Manchu conquest in 1644. During that time, China, not Europe, was the center of the world: the European voyages of exploration were searching not just for new lands but also for new trade routes to the Far East. In this book, Timothy Brook eloquently narrates the changing landscape of life over the three centuries of the Ming (1368-1644), when China was transformed from a closely administered agrarian realm into a place of commercial profits and intense competition for status.
The Confusions of Pleasure marks a significant departure from the conventional ways in which Chinese history has been written. Rather than recounting the Ming dynasty in a series of political events and philosophical achievements, it narrates this longue durée in terms of the habits and strains of everyday life. Peppered with stories of real people and their negotiations of a rapidly changing world, this book provides a new way of seeing the Ming dynasty that not only contributes to the scholarly understanding of the period but also provides an entertaining and accessible introduction to Chinese history for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars An internal view of an understudied dynasty.......2000-09-08

The Ming dynasty in China does not receive much attention since it mostly lacks the bloodshed or philosophical grandeur of the Qing, the Tang or the Han. Brook is one of the leading authorities on this era, and this book is, I believe, his most accessible. Beginning with documents written late in the dynasty, Brook shows how the elite of that time feared the collapse of the imagined golden past into what was then considered an immorally secular present. The massive economic changes in the globe in this era (14th to 17th centuries) changed the Chinese society and the Confucian elites place in it. Obviously less exciting to laymen than his work on Tiananmen, 1989, this is a clear book for students who have a general grasp of Chinese history and want to begin to grab details without losing the easy flow found in well written introductory books.

                Book Description

From the coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Every Spy a Prince comes the colorful true story of the business superheroes who rescued Marvel Comics from bankruptcy. In the mid-1990s, Marvel Entertainment became embroiled in a crisis as strange as one of its comic book stories. Locked in a battle for control of the half-century-old company were two Goliath-style corporate raiders and two virtually unknown Davids: Israeli immigrants with a passion for the toy business. This was a test of wills that led to a unique Wall Street showdown. Combining hard-hitting journalism with entertaining storytelling, Comic Wars takes readers behind the scenes of America's most bitter bankruptcy and captures the high-stakes, often hilarious twists and turns of this financial fiasco. The unforgettable cast of characters ranges from tycoon Ron Perelman (who bankrupted Marvel through overexpansion) and Carl Icahn (who then launched a hostile takeover of Marvel) to Ike Perlmutter and Avi Arad, scrappy owners of Toy Biz and the duo who ingeniously outmaneuvered the moguls. Culminating with Ike and Avi's triumphant launch of the blockbuster movie X-Men, and published just in time for the Spider-Man live-action movie, this is a marvelous must-read for the business world and all admirers of true grit.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Questionable edition.......2007-10-14

"Comic Wars" should be looked upon as an important predecessor to James B. Stewart's "DisneyWar". Its look at high financial battles in the entertainment industry featuring "men who act like beasts" in the capitalist class who are more concerned about the bottom line then whether valuable product can be made and sold, along with the one stakeholder who wants a better leveling of profit and artistic values (as they are in the mainstream comic book industry) striking back reminds the reader heavily of Stewart's tale.

One star is docked as follows:

                - A 1/2 star is docked for the author's decision to have this edition of the book published by Marvel itself (Perlmutter), taking odious trends in this type of business journalism one step forward.
                - Another 1/2 star is docked by "Heroes Books" (Marvel) for its job as publisher; several small black dots were noted throughout the pages of the book, and an index entry is missing its page numbers

3 out of 5 stars Insight into Marvel Comics in the 1990s.......2007-05-31

An interesting and at times slightly trashy look into the goings on at Marvel Comics during the 1990s. Fun for any comic book historian.

4 out of 5 stars Corporate finance meets fantasy.......2006-12-18

The story of how Marvel Comics ended up where it is today is one filled with legendary heroes and villains. The wise old sages such as Stan Lee and the original founders mattered little when Carl Ichan came in to do what he does best. The writing style is fantastic in this book and you get a story about corporate mergers that heralds back to Barbarians at the Gate. This story is a great read and I highly recommend it for those interested in corporate financial policy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best business books ever!.......2006-08-17

Dan Raviv's account of Marvel, Ronald Perleman, Carl Ichan and the fight for Marvel Comics is amazing. In the world of High Finance and coporate intrigue one would be hard pressed to find a book that is laid out more complete.

Taking topics such as Zero Yield Bonds, distressed debt & Coporate Bankrupcies that would confuse most readers or put them to sleep Raviv does the unthinkable. He writes the most entertaining business book I have ever read.

Although the cover of the book makes others think you are reading a comic book the content is as complete on the complexities of High Finance as any I have read. This includes textbooks. The pure educational value of the book alone is awesome. Add in the entertainment and you have a sure fire winner!

I have read this book 4 times and each time I learn more and am more entertained than the last. Should be required reading for any Finance professionals. If I could give this a 6 I would!

5 out of 5 stars Hardball Business Tale Colorfully Told.......2003-05-03

At first glance, Dan Raviv's book might seem irrelevant to readers of intrigue novels. Despite the flashy title and cool cover, reading about two rich businessmen fighting for the control of a publishing company might not seem all that exciting.

                It is exciting.

Like in any theatrical drama, Raviv begins his book with an annotated list of players. Most names will be unknowns outside of the industry. Stan Lee is here, as you might expect, but so is Isaac Perlmutter and numerous lesser executives. Their parts in this drama are crucial and understanding who they are from the beginning will help keep the plot clear.

This is, in some ways, a history of Marvel Comics, beginning in 1939 with Captain America, the Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch. Raviv walks us through Marvel's troubled times under various owners.

We get the play-by-play debacle hindering the X-Men and Spiderman from the silver screen, and the intense personalities behind it all.

The cynicism of loyal comic readers is told, as Marvel aimed for the financial speculator and played games with collectors (remember the many covers and bags of certain Spiderman issues?). When the quality of the Marvel Universe stunk up the magazine racks in the 1990s, it seemed if Spiderman would weave his last web.

Letters, trial notes and other details fill in this adventurous tale of the struggle for power, money and egos. We find out how Spiderman was finally able to make the bigtime.

I fully recommend "Comic Wars: How Two Tycoons Battled over the Marvel Comics Empire--And Both Lost" by Dan Raviv.

The only way to really know how your marketing campaign is doing is to test it with real people in a real life situation. While focus groups and other research provide some kinds of measurement the true test of success is when you use measurable, direct marketing and watch what transpires.

This is where Denny's book comes in to play. Nobody, but NOBODY knows testing like Denny Hatch. He's seen it all, he's participated in more tests, he's got the archive of all archives with his Who's Mailing What ... and he's connected to the most successful marketers in the industry, to share insight, pick their brains and then translate the testing that is being done into something we can all use to improve our own discovery of what makes our own customers buy from us.

Needless to say, regardless of your role in the marketing world, from mangement to creative (yes, creative!) , every marketer should own this book. And a sign that you're learning from it is to observe how dog-eared it gets over the next 12 months.

                  Book Description

Wastewater Treatment is another indispensable work from the author of Water Treatment. Both books are helpful tools for crisis identification and, most importantly, resolution. Tillman writes in a concise, well organized format - perfect for fast reference. This operator's guide presents basic troubleshooting and problem solving information for typical problems that can occur during the operation of processes used at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants. Common problems and the recommended operator responses are listed in tabular form for individual unit processes. Entry level operators will benefit greatly from the problems Tillman addresses, while experienced operators will appreciate it as a handy reference. The information compiled in this volume has been collected from various equipment manfacturers' operation and maintenance manuals, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) technology transfer documents, the authors personal experience as a plant Operations and Maintenance manual writer, and his experience as a plant manager and operator. He includes only the most common wastewater treatment unit processes. He gives an overview of the treatment objective of the unit process, and then provides each with a troubleshooting table divided into Indicators/Observations: Possible Cause; Check or Monitor; Possible Solutions columns. Wastewater Treatment reads like the best of training manuals. Tillman's know-how, combined with his clarity, make this book required occupational reading. The brief, straightforward format and easy-to-read tables make the guide an accessible problem solving reference.
