Myths, stories, and folklore are part of the fabric and life of all organizations, enabling us to understand, identify, and communicate the character of the organization - its ambitions, conflicts, and peculiarities. Drawing on extensive fieldwork of storytelling in five organizations, this book argues that stories open valuable windows into the emotional and symbolic lives of organizations. By collecting stoires in different organizations, by listening and comparing different accounts, by investigating how narratives are constructed around specific events, by examining which events in an organization's history generate stories and which ones fail to do so, researchers can gain access to deeper organizational realities, closely linked to their members' experiences. In this way, stories enable researchers to study organizational politics, culture, and change in uniquely illuminating ways, revealing how wider organizational issues are viewed, commented upon, and worked upon by their members. I have been privileged to a member of a Baldrige team at a major service company who won the award, and consulting projects where the criteria was the major template for improvement. This is, by far, the best effort I have seen which strategically presents and describes the criteria, then provides practical counsel on how to apply it. As such, it is invaluable to examiners and consultants, and especially so to senior leaders and internal change agents attempting to improve performance within the Baldrige framework. The authors' lucid explanations of the key linkages within the criteria are alone worth the purchase price. The software included is worth many times the price. If you are serious about using the Baldrige criteria, this is a book you cannot afford to be without.

Radical Cost Reduction.......2006-11-11

Suzue advocates a radical cost reduction method that he terms "Cost Half". "Cost Half" is a set of cost reduction methods, a powerful programme that achieves unprecedented levels of systematic organization. Pursuing the Cost Half approach is not a matter of making small, gradual improvements or piecemeal cost reductions, nor is it a temporary programme of activities. After such programmes are completed, things tend to revert to the way they were before. Instead, the Cost Half programme creates a sleek but strong organization that embodies the idea of maintaining low costs while averting into backsliding after making progress.

The Cost Half approach is geared towards achieving two types of cost competitiveness: the ability to improve the bottom line and the ability to maintain strong competitive products or service costs. Because of the need for quick responses to rapid changes in the market or business environment, the best approach is one that seeks to gain both of these abilities at the same time.

Since businesses are only as good as the people in them, human resource training is essential when implementing radical cost reduction. Business managers must keep in mind the importance of human resource development in building the desire and will in the workforce to improve cost management.

The key work in Cost Half is half. Why half? Because when cost-cutting activities are based on a goal such as a mere 10 or 20 percent reduction in costs, people tend to come with small, incremental cost-cutting ideas and are always conscious of the constraints involved. In other words, their whole approach if geared towards the modest goal of achieving a 10 or 20 percent cost reduction. We cannot revolutionise cost competitiveness by taking such a modest approach. So, the general goal is not modest but radical: cut costs by half.

This is an excellent book on how to radically cut costs. Recommended when a company is in serious trouble and needs a turnaround, but once the turnaround is achieved, I would advocate a continuous programme of gradual cost reduction, which does not entail huge disruptions including layoffs of people.

The Presidents' Inaugurals are worth reading. There are few similarities between them. Some recount history. Some are long, some are short. Some are eloquent while others use plain language. Some give specific policy proposals while others focus on the big picture. It is interesting to see what the Presidents wanted the country to focus on. It is also interesting to compare their predictions to what actually occurred. It is interesting that Warren G. Harding and Jimmy Carter both quoted from the same Old Testament passage in the book of Micah.

accessing to american history..........2000-07-28

'The Inaugural Address of the Preidents' is one of the few nonficton books I've read. I read it not wanting to be one-sided regarding books(most books I have read are fiction), and trying to get a clearer image on the presidents I have not known well. This book, besides the inaugural addresses, has a short writing about the president in each election. The inaugural address may be just an address, but it also showed the differing view of values of each presidents, while sketching the hitory of america, if briefly. I'm not an american, and so the vocabulary was a little hard for me, and it is of course not what you would call a fun book but all in all, it was a thumbs up.

I was usually skeptical about books with such long titles. They usually bored me. But this one was very different. I felt that I could connect with the characters and their thoughts. It was amazing. I have never read a book that has such amazing qualities as this one.
