Customer Reviews:
A quick way to an estimate........2007-06-11
The Assemblies Cost Data method is a reliable and fairly quick way to generate an estimate. This is especially helpful if you want to compare the costs of different construction types (i.e. steel, pre-cast, cast-in-place). However, I found that I still needed the information in the more detailed Construction Cost Data book to fill in missing items, like demolition, louvers, or ceiling insulation.
Means Cost Assemblies is Super Info! A lot more than prices.......2000-09-07
This book is great for those of us just starting out in construction - it breaks down each system so that you may price the pieces individually or as an entire system price.
It's really great if you don't know what you should be looking for in a complete system. For example, what goes into a stem wall - this book explains it, and then prices each individual part. Great resource!

Book Description
Of all the education and training providers in the United States, community colleges and two-year technical colleges are in the best position to respond directly and quickly to the ideals of the School-to-Work Opportunities Act of 1994. The act promotes a systemic appreach to preparing a global workforce by establishing a framework within which states can create school-to-work systems. Community colleges are an important linchpin in the new paradigm. particularly as the neutral convener of the new collaborative and entrepreneurial partnerships, consortia, and coalitions that will be necessary. This issue demonstrates how community colleges are engaged in strengthening existing partnerships with schools, employers, and labor- and community-based organizations as they develop new programs to address the three major components of school-to-work systems. This issue will serve as a valuable resource guide for school-to-work practitioners as they build on these partnerships. This is the 97th issue in the journal series New Directions for Community Colleges.

Effective, but tests your patience.......2004-03-11
Essentially, a quality reference book. I'm a remodeler and general contractor in Madison, WI. I've used this book to establish budgetary figures for homes I buy, renovate and flip. Being accurate with this book means being patient and flipping back and forth to find every little detail, but the time pays off - Means brings me in at or just above my actual costs. Couldn't ask for much more, except the layout according to the CSI Master Format doesn't make it easy to find all the right items and numbers. Also, Means doesn't allow for things like the style, height or complexity of the roof when determining cost to install shingles - so just be careful and remember to add in that contingency at the end. And don't forget to add local sales tax, if you have to pay it. (In my opinion, this book is better than Means Residential Repair and Remodel guide - that book gives you less options. However, it is organized they way you might layout a project. It's also easier to get a final number, but you defintely have to up your contingency factor because it's not as accurate.) If you're a remodeler, buy Detailed Residential Costs and use it - it'll save you time and money in the long run.

2007 Edition: Excellent reference for budgeting or estimating.......2006-12-28
The 2006 Edition is a worthwhile buy and pays for itself quickly. I wish I had bought it much earlier in my home budgeting process. The information is well organized in a user-friendly manner. It even has cost adjustment factors for hundreds of cities. This should help you to be prepared somewhat before you start negotiating with builders and contractors.
Excellent book if you are building your own home.......1999-08-25
This is an excellent book for estimating the costs involved in building a new home. It provides enough detail to get a good idea on costs. It is not as detailed as some of the other books out there but for a person like myself it has proved to be an invaluable tool. And it is easy enough to use as opposed to some of the other books out there.

Governance of Teaching Hospitals: Turmoil at Penn and Hopkins
ASIN: 1567203493 |
Book Description
Without new ways to think and manage itself strategically, academic healthcare faces terminal deterioration. Heightened competition and changing dynamics have brought turbulence to teaching hospitals, and the main impact has been financial. Langabeer and Napiewocki give health care executives the tools and concepts of strategic management they need and ways to strengthen analytic skills, all based on up-to-date empirical research, cast in language they can grasp and relate to, and specially tailored to help teaching hospital administrators cope successfully with today's marketplace challenges. Board members, trustees, and others with decision- and policy-making responsibilities will also find the book essential, as well as their teaching colleagues and students on their way up in the hospital industry. The authors maintain that if nonprofit teaching hospitals are to compete successfully with private for-profit hospital chains, not only must they learn the terrain of the playing fields, they must also learn how the game itself is played. Langabeer and Napiewocki offer that knowledge, and in doing so have written the first book of its kind to address comprehensively the entire realm of strategic management aimed clearly at teaching hospitals and major academic medical centers. With findings from primary empirical research into a large sample of teaching hospitals and focusing on the statistical relationships to economic performance, they provide crucial insights into why certain hospitals are more effective than others. Their book will also help healthcare executives relate strategy research on industrial organizations to their own teaching hospital environments. In doing so, their book fills a void in the literature on business strategy that for too long has caused consternation among healthcare administrators and aspirants alike.

Book Description
Captialists Against Markets challenges the conventional wisdom that welfare state builders took their cues from labor and other progressive interests. Instead, Peter Swenson argues, pragmatic social reformers looked for support not only from below but also from above, taking into account capitalists interests and preferences. With original theory and surprising historical evidence, Capitalists Against Markets illuminates the political conditions for greater economic equality and social security in capitalist societies.
Customer Reviews:
businessmen for socialism.......2004-08-07
In the early 20th century, the attitude of the capitalist class in Sweden was almost the exact opposite of conventional wisdom. Not only did business organizations welcome the growth of unions, they actually aided in the process. For the most part, they offered at best half-hearted opposition to the expansion of the welfare state and sometimes eagerly backed it.
The Swedish labor market of the early 20th century was perhaps the mirror opposite of what we associate with modern industrial economies. Rather than suffering a labor surplus (high unemployment) the Swedish labor market was suffering a chronic labor shortage, in part because of emigration, to the US and elsewhere. Eager to control the union demands, the lockout was a regular tactic used by Swedish employers associations. If the author is to be believed, they were quite successful at mounting lockouts within industries and sometimes across industries. Fearing the militant unions, the mainstream unions often tacitly approved of the employer tactics.
What runs through the employer strategy is an ingrained fear of competition from other capitalists who would lure employees away from existing employers, or alternately undercut the established companies with lower cost products. Unlike some American employers who attempted to ensure worker loyalty with "welfare capitalism", Swedish employers judiciously rejected the notion of non-wage benefits and were particularly strident in their attempts to curtail the introduction of such benefits by non-compliant employers. They also feared "chiselers" who undercut the sales of the mainstream businesses with lower prices as a result of lower labor costs. Viewed from this perspective, "solidarism" with the state and labor in the form of an array of social benefits financed through broad-based taxation was appealing. Thus the author takes issue with those who claim Sweden's generous welfare state is a result of labor agitation alone, rather he suggests capital was an active and willing promoter.
The author notes similar attitudes among some US business leaders although he doesn't really try to determine why the American capitalists were less inclined to support a similar level of state-financed social welfare. Curiously, the Swedish capitalists in his book seem indifferent to the level of taxation imposed upon them. The failure to address these two points weakens the author's thesis slightly. However, it is still an interesting proposition and one that has plausibility.
Praise for Capitalists Against Markets.......2002-12-03
"Capitalists Against Markets highlights the important role played by employers in the creation of the American and Swedish welfare states. In a brilliant and original analysis, Swenson shows how employer strategies--solidarism in Sweden and segmentalism in the U.S.--were rooted in each country's economic development and gave rise to distinctive public programs. The book takes on both rational choice and social democratic arguments: employers acted rationally, Swenson shows, but their choices were historically constrained and far from being reflexively anti-labor or anti-government, right down to the 1990s. Adroitly blending theory, history, and politics, Swenson has created a masterpiece of comparative scholarship. "
Sanford M. Jacoby, Anderson Graduate School of Management, UCLA
"Capitalists against Markets is a magnificent follow-up on the author's much acclaimed Fair Shares. In this new book, Peter Swenson proposes a much needed correction to the mainstream - and myopic - focus on the role of labor movements in the making of welfare politics. He offers both rich history and strong analysis of how capitalists helped give shape and form to the welfare state and to labor market policies in Sweden and the United States, two countries that exemplify the welfare state extremes. It is both impressive and path-breaking scholarship and it will no doubt provoke controversy. It certainly should, as it forces us social scientists to take the politics of capitalists far more seriously than has been our want."
Gosta Esping-Andersen, Universidad Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain
"This is a book of great importance. Marshalling detailed historical evidence, Swenson persuasively challenges the view that employers were uniformly hostile to the creation of the welfare state by showing that this was untrue even in the United States. As an added bonus, it is quite a gripping read."
David Soskice, Research Professor of Political Science, Duke University

Book Description
Economists and historians view the events of the 1920s, the stock market boom and crash, the Great Depression and the New Deal, as being largely independent. This work presents an integrated, empirically-consistent view of this important period arguing that all of these events can be traced back to a paradigm technology shock, namely the electrification of U.S. industry from 1910 to 1926. The author goes from electrification through the stock market boom to the tariffs of the late 20s to the stock market crash and depression followed by the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933.

Reviewers - Dr Jessica Backlund (MA, PhD) and Shaun Powell (Btech, AIMgt, BAHons) - November 2001.
Quick summary: This book deals with the changing brand environment, where consumers are more familiar with marketing and able to see through hollow marketing promises. De Chernatony focuses a great deal of attention on how the staff in an organization can be motivated to commit to the values promoted by the brand and thereby strengthen it. The keyword is coordination, and de Chernatony argues for a balanced approach which looks both outside and inside an organization to satisfy the stakeholder's needs. We liked this book - 4.5 out of 5.
Full Review :
Chapter one looks at the definition of a brand from both an external and internal perspective, and also looks at team based brand management.
Chapter two looks at the complexity of brands, and how different interpretations of a brand can be brought to attention in oder to achieve more consistency. This chapter looks at concepts such as image, identity and vision.
The next chapter looks at ways in which inconsistencies in branding programmes can be tackled. On-line brands are discussed, and the importance of consistency between off-line and on-line sources is stressed.
Chapters four to ten look at the process of building and sustaining brands. Chapter four deals with three elements of powerful brand vision; an envisioned future, the brand purpose and the brand values.
Chapter five looks at organizational culture and how the behaviour of staff can be a competitative advantage if related to the values present in the organization's culture.
The next chapter looks at long and short term objectives, and ways of focusing the staff's attention on these.
Chapter seven looks at the five forces in the brand sphere which can enhance or impede a brand's success; the corporation, distributors, customers, competitors, and the macro environment.
Chapter eight deals with brand essence - ways in which the core nature of a brand can be summarised using models such as the brand pyramid.
Chapter nine looks at brand delivery systems and the last chapter looks at how a brand's progress can be evaluated.
The book has excellent summaries in the beginning and end of each chapter, and there are also an activities section in each chapter, as well as exercises to help the readers put the ideas into practice. Academic readers may be especially interested in the 'further reading' lists at the end of each chapter.
This book is, in spite of its theoretical content, both an interesting and enjoyable read. The text is scattered with examples from real life, which stops the book from being too dry and boring. From Brand Vision to Brand Evaluation will appeal to both academics and practitioners, because of its depth and applicability.

Book Description
What do you do when ordinary becomes OK?
Corporate Denial confronts head on everything that anybody who has ever worked in a company goes home and moans about, and helps do something about it.
The vast majority of companies are in denial about the fact that they have become very ordinary places to be. As a result they are unchallenging, uninspiring, ineffective and generally listless. Corporate Denial helps companies of all sizes communicate and get to grips with the etiquette of inaction. It says the things you have longed to say, talks about the things you see on a daily basis and gives you a hammer to smash some corporate cows with. This is a manifesto for action for those who are just interested in the pursuit of good business. Read it and lead your organization out of denial.
Corporate Denial comes with its very own antidote, Codenial, to relieve the pressures and pains of working. Codenial (tm) provides:
- Fast relief from the etiquette of inaction
- Treats meaningless corporate values
- Alleviates lost purpose and low corporate libido
- Restores sanity and clears up confusion
- Provokes effective communication
