In a world of diminishing quality, THIS BOOK SHINES!.......2007-08-25
Long, verbose, time consuming and WORTH EVERY BIT OF IT!
Was an assigned text for an upper level university Management course. Excellent choice. The content made sense, was well written/easy to read, and continually built on earlier chapters.
It's still on my shelf as a reference I refer to often in my business. Wouldn't be without it!
Like off the shelf new.......2006-03-18
Came quickly with the software package included.
Saved over $20 from school bookstore website!
It is really a Quality book.......2005-09-30
It is straightforward book. Each chapter has some case study, which is real application of Quality management. I would strongly recommend for students as well as managers to read this book. It has different point of views from various Philosophers like Dr. Deming, Dr. Juran, Crosby and other well-known persons.
I highly recommend this textbook .......2005-07-27
I used an older edition of this book in preparing for the ASQ Certified Quality Manager Exam. It is a great reference.
Very comprehensive book!.......2004-02-23
This is a required book in Keller Graduate School of Management for GM588 (Managing Quality). It is an exceptionally comprehensive title.

Management: The New Competitive Landscape with CD and PowerWeb
ASIN: 0072476702 |
Book Description
Operations Management, 7/e surveys the field of operations in both the services and manufacturing sectors. Provides enhanced coverage from the strategies of designing a product or service, through the processes and systems of making and delivering the product, and controlling the operations. All the standard topics are covered with concepts and supporting examples, problems, cases, and appropriate current news clips and readings. Stevenson highlights the very important role Operations plays in today’s business world with concise coverage of concepts such as JIT, TQM, supply chain management with more thorough integration of services and increased use of real world examples. All basic quantitative techniques are presented, many in supplements that can be highlighted or bypassed depending on the course structure, and all are supported with step-by-step examples and solved problems, many including example solutions built into Excel spreadsheets. The text is the most widely adopted of any for the introductory course mainly due to the balanced coverage and clearly explained concepts.

Operations Management with Student CD-ROM.......2006-03-09

Interesting Read.......2003-03-19
This book is an easy read, lots of pictures, examples w/ solutions and definitions give clear understanding with a follow-up example. If you're into operations, get this book!
authors think we have no brains.......2002-12-28
the book is written with a lot of unnecessary details that are just common sense. The exersises are ok but too much stuff that was not important
Easy text to follow.......2002-03-07
Used in MSCI classes. Easy text to follow with alot of examples, no case studies though. The most valuable item though is the student cd-rom. It's a great tool, especially the excel worksheets-which are easy to use. Explore the cd-rom and you'll know what I mean.
Book Description
Operations Management: Contemporary Concepts and Cases, is an ideal book for the instructor seeking a short text with cases. This book employs a cross-functional perspective, appealing to non-majors and practical for use in an MBA level course in operations management. The size and price of the book also make the text attractive for the cross-functional curriculum where students are required to purchase more than one text. The cases offer variety in length and rigor; and several are from Harvard and Darden. This mix makes the book appropriate for both undergraduates and MBA students.
Customer Reviews:
A good supplementary text .......2006-01-26
Schroeder has written a very good broad, introductory text that can be effectively used in three different ways. The book can be used as an introduction to operations management for non business or liberal arts majors. The second way that the book can be used is as a supplement to the Knod-Schonberger book or the Stevenson book. The management case studies section at the end of the book is excellent .However, it is not recommended that this book be used as a core textbook in a formal operations management course in a business department curriculum unless the instructor intends to supplement the students reading with numerous technical handouts. For instance,a handout on basic cost-volume analysis must have already been digested by the student before he could make any sense out of the example or exercise problems in chapter 12(Facilities and Aggregate Planning). Shroeder may have assumed that the reader of his text will already have completely mastered many/most of the basic operations management tools and techniques. This should be the case in graduate level courses;the book would be a useful supplement in MBA courses.
Book Description
This text provides a survey of the most innovative techniques and methods for managing operations in services and manufacturing. It presents all concepts with a real-world perspective based on the extensive global consulting work of the lead author, Dick Schonberger. This text is unique due to its customer-focused approach. Using the authors 15 principles as a framework for organizing the text This text stresses teamwork, quality, and customer service in both manufacturing and services, as well as traditional topics such as product and service design, purchasing, inventory, location and layout, and scheduling are also included. Quantitative coverage is de-emphasized.
Customer Reviews:
The best general undergraduate treatment of operations management-4.5 stars.......2006-01-26
Knod and Schonberger have written the best general text available on production/operations management at the undergraduate level. The text has very good chapters on Capacity Planning(aggregate capacity planning),Scheduling,Design(reliability and serviceability),Quality and process control(especially pp.318-322 on mean and range charts and pp.327-330 on process capability analysis),Inventory control,Timing(waiting lines and queues),and PERT.A minor weakness is that a discussion of the use of the Beta distribution in PERT analysis is omitted from the book.Anyone who covers this book throughly will be very well prepared to take senior level undergraduate courses and graduate level courses in operations management.
Mixed - good survey and quan, weaker on soft subjects.......1999-01-06
Fairly good survey book. Having an undergrad operations background, I found this book mirrored the strengths and weaknesses of a more detailed operations curriculum. Book is best in framework and quantitative model overviews, weaker on softer subjects like staffing, project management, & holistic quality.
Highly over-rated . Full of fluff.......1997-10-22
If your MBA professor offers Schonberger as the answer to 21st Century Operations Management, seek a transfer quick. Obsessed with a touchy-feeling "quality paradigm", there is not enough meat here to frighten off the most zealous vegetarian. The chapters on "managing projects" and "facilities management" are especially shallow.
Customer Reviews:
Not for OM majors.......2001-09-25
This books does a good job supporting a contemporary approach to Operations management. It does not assume everybody wants to major in Om nor does it assume everybody wants to go into manufacturing. It is very readable and does a good job helping the studetn understand the basic trade-offs of OM.

Book Description
Based on a profoundly important six-year study by the Center for the Quality of Management (CQM), "Integrated Management Systems" shows how successful organizations accomplish something unbelievably powerful: Creating their own particular ways of executing the scientific method. The authors worked with the cooperation of some of America's largest companies - Teradyne, Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Chemical, Ritz-Carlton -- and of non-profit organizations including top hospitals and the U.S. Navy. They were surprised to find how radically successful systems differed from one organization to the next.
Yet the core of each was universal: Each organization had designed a system that gathered data about the organization's particular problems, developed theories, tested the theories, and finally documented and shared the results throughout the organization. Each successful organization's methods were unique much as the methods of each successful discipline within the sciences are unique. But less successful organizations had nothing comparable. And the processes through which the leaders in these organizations had gotten them on the right path had a great deal in common.
Customer Reviews:
Don't know what to do without the hero-leader - read this.......1999-12-01
If you read this book in conjunction with Kent Bowen's Harvard Business Review article 'Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System (Sept. Oct. 1999) you will get more out of both. The language and case studies are a little different, but the purpose is the same: to develop a system to utilize the scientific method in problem solving at every level of the organization. This book can take you through this complex world and tie together all the fragments we've been studying for years. Whether it's called lean manufacturing or operating systems or TQM, they are all systems that tie tools together in a common purpose. Understand: (1) how to tie it together, (2) how to teach and learn about it, and (3) how to implement it. This isn't a book with just one idea rehashed over and over; the devil is in the details, and this is filled with useful details that have been tested and proven effective. Before you set about trying to change or design your organization, read this book first. The only thing that I would have liked to see to make it better is a chapter on Toyota, the most benchmarked Integrated Management System in the world.

"Orange County," writes Mark Baldassare, "is a place that is widely known but largely misunderstood." That's especially true of the bankruptcy proceedings the California county was forced to initiate in late 1994 after risky investments led to a $1.64 billion dollar loss. Baldassare's close analysis of the situation reveals that the crisis cannot, as popularly imagined, be blamed solely on the actions of unchecked financial management. Although the county treasurer's investment strategy was "an accident waiting to happen," Baldassare points to a two-decade trend of voter initiatives to simultaneously minimize tax increases and control the allocation of state tax funds, along with Orange County's political fragmentation, as contributing factors. He also points out that, contrary to its reputation as a stronghold of wealthy conservatives, the county is primarily made up of middle-class suburbanites of moderate political temperament. In other words, Orange County is a lot like the rest of America, and what happened there can happen again. Although When Government Fails, with its historical data, statistics, and surveys, isn't always a lively read, it's a useful one for anybody who is concerned about the future viability of government at the community level. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
When Orange County, California, filed for Chapter 9 protection on December 6, 1994, it became the largest municipality in United States history to declare bankruptcy. In the first comprehensive analysis of this momentous fiscal crisis, Mark Baldassare uncovers the many twists and turns from the dark days in December 1994 to the financial recovery of June 1996. Utilizing a wealth of primary materials from the county government and Merrill Lynch, as well as interviews with key officials and players in this drama, Mark Baldassare untangles the causes of this $1.64 billion fiasco.
He finds three factors critical to understanding the bankruptcy: one, the political fragmentation of the numerous local governments in the area; two, the fiscal conservatism underlying voters' feelings about their tax dollars; three, the financial austerity in state government and in meeting rising state expenditures. Baldassare finds that these forces help to explain how a county known for its affluence and conservative politics could have allowed its cities' school, water, transportation, and sanitation agencies to be held hostage to this failed investment pool. Meticulously examining the events that led up to the bankruptcy, the local officials' response to the fiscal emergency, and the road to fiscal recovery--as well as the governmental reforms engendered by the crisis--When Government Fails is a dramatic and instructive economic morality tale. Eminently readable, it underlines the dangers inherent in a freewheeling bull economy and the imperatives of local and state governments to protect fiscal assets. As Baldassare shows, Orange County need not--and should not--happen again.

Book Description
A must for every sales professional,
Next-Step Selling explains how to sell complex goods and services to today's savvy customer
- Provides a clear and realistic diagnostic tool for complex selling that may be applied to the majority of sales environments.
- Teaches the salesperson how to sell not only the product, but the organization and themselves.
- Shows how to differentiate a product from the multitude of competitors by tangible 'separation factors'.
Relevant to today's complex sales environment, where the customers are more knowledgeable, aware and demand the best value for their money,
Next-Step Selling provides a clear, workable and realistic diagnostic tool that may be applied to the majority of sales environments and products, goods or services. In today's cost sensitive business environment, retaining and nurturing existing customer relationships is more effective than focusing energies on gaining new customers, so complex selling is more critical. John Barker teaches the salesperson how to sell, not only the product, but also the organization and themselves and illustrates how to differentiate a product from the multitude of competitors by intangible 'separation factors'. The book is divided into three key sections and provides a workable view of the 'Next-Step' selling technique. The first section offers a new approach to selling while the second section covers the nine key sales elements (planning, prospecting, relationship, needs, positioning, follow-up, barriers, closing and negotiation). The final section covers bringing the process to life with essential sales skills.
John Barker is a partner in DTS International, a corporate communications consultancy and is a high profile speaker, participating in seminars about communication and negotiation skills, conflict resolution, team dynamics, sales skills and customer relationships.
