Carl E. O’Connell, Mentor Program Coordinator
Rochester City School District and Rochester Teachers Association, NY

"This book is packed with practical suggestions and detailed hints on how a program can be set up and woven into the fabric of a school in a systemic way. Portner captures the ups and downs of mentoring relationships and proposes effective ways to keep mentoring programs energized."
      Charles E. Gobron, Teacher Chair
      Professional Development Council
      Massachusetts Teachers Association

A roadmap for highly effective mentoring programs! This comprehensive, but accessible, resource also serves as a practical management tool for mentor program coordinators and committees.

      • Obtaining broad-based commitment and participation from key individuals and groups
      • Understanding and working within the larger environment
      • Forming and developing effective mentoring committees
      • Roles and responsibilities of participants
      • Pragmatic and effective policies, procedures, and resources

      5 out of 5 stars Author's comments.......2001-05-14

I have written this book for educational leaders who want to develop an exemplary mentoring program or upgrade an existing one. It is for everyone committed to being part of a program that validates, supports and celebrates every aspect of the mentor-mentee relationship. It is intended as a) a how-to guide and workbook for planners and doers; b) a practical reference and management tool for mentor program coordinators and members of program committees; and c) a supplementary text for seminars or a graduate level courses in educational leadership or program development.

Overview of the Contents The book consists of an introduction and nine chapters. The introduction presents mentoring as a valued component of contemporary educational philosophy and practice, differentiates between adequate and exemplary mentoring programs, and argues for the use of a systems mind-set while developing and operating a program. The nine chapters - each focusing on a key element essential to the viability of an exemplary program - offer down-to-earth discussions supplemented by anecdotes, commentary, examples, and interactive exercises designed to help the reader develop practical strategies appropriate to the culture and circumstances of his or her particular school or district. The first chapter, Commitment, suggests how to identify and engage people and organizations that are committed to the belief that mentoring is a powerful way to retain and develop new teachers. Chapter 2, Putting Commitment To Work, advocates a planning and implementation committee, describes the process of collaborative decision making, and pays attention to the group dynamics within which a committee operates. Chapter 3, The Macro-System, discusses the environment, the system-of-systems, within which the mentoring program operates. It looks at organizations, agencies, and programs both inside and outside the local district, and how these entities relate to a local mentoring program. Chapter 4, Roles and Responsibilities (It Takes a Community to Induct a Teacher), details ways in which a variety of people in a local education community can contribute to the development of a new teacher. Chapter 5, Policies, Procedures and Particulars, specifies the kinds of decisions a mentoring committee needs to make, and a variety of ways the results of those decisions might be implemented. Chapter 6, Professional Development For Newly Trained Mentors, recognizes that like newly certified teachers, newly trained mentors may have acquired skills and understandings but may not be able to apply them effectively in authentic settings. A variety of strategies and activities are suggested to address the need of newly trained mentors to enhance and expand their effectiveness. Chapter 7, Evaluating The Fledgling Mentoring Program, provides ways to evaluate new or revised programs for purposes of both accountability and improvement. Chapter 8, Some Other Programs Related To Mentoring, discusses three recently developed models and their potential as components of a mentoring program, i.e., support and learning groups for new teachers, co-mentoring between and among experienced peers, and peer assistance and review for teachers who receive unsatisfactory evaluations. Chapter 9, A Mentoring Program Planning and Management Guide, looks at each element of a mentoring program that a planning committee might want to incorporate, and guides the reader through the steps involved in the element's development and implementation. After reading this book and working through its exercises, you will have gained a comprehensive perspective of what constitutes an exemplary mentoring program, and developed a variety of practical strategies for planning, implementing, managing, and nurturing such a program in your school or district.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedia of Information.......2004-01-08

The book is simply superb. It is packed with valuable information presnted in an understandable, enjoyable format, and it contains great humor--which not only makes learning enjoyable, but increases the effectiveness of teaching actual content.

I have spent all of my life as an educator, and am constantly reviewing instructional materials. It is extremely rare to find an author that can break down complex material in such a manner that it is understandable to someone with little or no knowledge in the content area. To have that level of material presented in a sytle that makes learning fun as well as productive, is almost unheard of. Yet, that is exactly what Rob Weinberg has done in this book.

I enthusiastically recommned this book to anyone considering doing business on the Internet, anyone looking to invest in that market, and to professors and students in business schools throughout the country.

3 out of 5 stars Not serious enough or detailed enough.......2003-01-17

This book has a lot of unique advice and information on starting up a company and creating an entire business plan, for either an outside investor, just a family member, or internal use only. However, it was not really focused on Dot Com companies like I hoped, and the tone of the book was much too joking for my liking. I like the Dummies books in general, which also offer jokes, but the author went a little overboard here. Too much of the text is fluff, which wastes time while reading each section. Also, I would have preferred serious and real life business plan examples in the appendix. Like I said, some of the advice is really useful when you find it, and it is written in a very easy to read by anyone manner, which might be helpful for some. I just expected a lot more judging by the reviews here.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for anyone revising their business plan.......2001-12-22

Whether for the entrepreneur or the established business, this is THE book to use when revising a business plan. Weinberg hits the mark again and again, and does so in a way that makes the reader feel he is speaking with an old friend - bad jokes and all. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know.

4 out of 5 stars StreetSmart Internet Planning.......2001-11-20

For those of us who are street smart when it comes to entrepreneurship.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid of the title. Buy the book!.......2001-09-26

Don't let the somewhat unwieldy title put you off: the book delivers exactly what the title says it will. Weinberg's book is written in a friendly, conversational tone that is easy to digest. Another reviewer noted that he read Weinberg's book in a weekend. That is easy to do. Weinberg is a natural teacher. You may pick up his book expecting something akin to shoveling snow uphill in a New England winter but instead you find a voice that charms and entertains you, all the while teaching you what you need to know about getting your .com business up and running. I strongly recommend this book.

          Book Description

America's debt-$5.2 trillion in 1996-is serious business. Although contemporary press coverage hovers over the story of annual budgets and the associated deficits (and rare surpluses), not much attention is given to the overall national debt and even less to the interest spent serving it. "It's like worrying about the five dollars you borrowed last week and ignoring the mortgage you can't afford," says the author. And federal politicians are generally as impotent to control the debt as they are uninformed about its nature. After tracing the fluctuations in the finances of the country from its beginning until 1940, the administrations of the next 11 presidents-Roosevelt through Clinton-and the annual budget deficits and the interest expenses that fed the national debt are examined in detail. The startup debt of each administration is shown in detail, then restated in 1983 and 1995 dollars. The change in debt through the end of the administration is then analyzed as to what areas of government incurred overspending and how much was overspent. Also discussed are major events or situations, foreign and domestic, that affected fiscal policies and fueled the urge to overspend.

                  Book Description

Can insurance be used as a means to obtain compliance with environmental policy? Answering this question requires examination of a broad mosaic of academic issues, including current systems available for providing compensation and deterrence, use of contracts (including insurance) as substitutes for tort law, limitations of regulatory policy-making by government agencies, pre-conditions for creation of insurance products, and market mechanisms necessary for insurance to be purchased or sold. The purpose of Managing Environmental Risk Through Insurance is to highlight the potential role that insurance and performance standards can play in managing environmental risk. Insurance can play a significant role in dealing with one of the most problematic issues facing society today - how to compensate for environmental exposures.
This book analyzes the ability of insurance to play a role in managing environmental risk. It begins by outlining the role insurance plays in society in contrast to other societal tools for addressing risk: government benefit programs and imposition of involuntary liability using the court system. By so doing, the book describes the comparative advantages of insurance. The book then analyzes the insurability of the risks. Finally, the book applies the insurability analysis to three concrete environmental examples.
