5 out of 5 stars This book is great for learning good habits.......2006-06-22

This book was required in one of my college classes. It teaches you how to choose goals and how to set them. It helps with the process of breaking your goals into smaller easier to manage pieces to avoid becoming overwhelmed and frustrated.

This book is a great tool for students of all ages and adults too. It helps teach good study habits which then turn into good work habits.

I would recommend this book for anyone that wants to become successful in school, work and life.

1 out of 5 stars Wrong book received.......2004-10-05

What i ordered was very clear but i received a book with totally diferent ISBN #. I don't think it was an honest mistake, it's the only book they had and wanted to get rid of it. I'd never buy from these guys again.

5 out of 5 stars Winning in The Game of Life.......2000-09-13

This book should be read not only by students but also by anyone who is still unsure about what they are doing and where they are going. It covers a wide range of topics and addresses serious issues that face especially the teens and young adults as they make a transition from school to society. These range from help with learning and time management to issues on sexual decisions and substance abuse. The layout and graphics make it appealing and easy to read. "Keys to Success" systematically takes student readers through their final years in schools and helps them to think seriously about their goals in school, their careers and ultimately their future lives. Coupled with questionnaires and written exercises, it really leads to greater self-awareness and confidence. I would recommend that parents of teenage children get this book for them and better still go through it with them, if their schools do not use it in their curriculum. Not only students, but anyone who still feels unsure of himself or herself could benefit from this book. We all have goals and dreams for our future. This book shows us how we can take charge and emerge winners in the game of life.

                      Book Description

Who are the Japanese? This question has tantalized and bewildered the West ever since Japan opened its borders to the world in the last century. Are the Japanese really the guileless, polite, and hard-working people that they appear to be? Or do appearances mask a calculating, secretive interior? Can we ever understand their ways of thinking? Robert March--psychologist, management consultant, and long-term professor at a major Tokyo university--spent nearly twenty years living in Japan and, as the ultimate insider, offers fresh insights into these and other questions.

Deploying a wealth of sources, March delves behind the social mask that the Japanese present to the outside world to reveal their "inner culture." He highlights their modes of thinking and communication, the originality of their culture, the central role of social status, their ways of making friends and influencing others, and their addiction to perfection.

March also addresses two topics of prime significance to all students of modern Japan. He reflects on the "goodness" of the Japanese people and the ethical quality of their society and business practices. And in the final chapter, he discusses the social and political significance of Aum Shinrikyo, the bizarre cult responsible for the indiscriminate gas attacks that terrorized Tokyo in 1995.

Topical, up-to-date, and discerning, Reading the Japanese Mind is essential material for anyone seeking an understanding of Japan today. It transcends the stereotypes and outdated cliche that afflict so many outside views of Japan, and is perhaps the most noteworthy depiction of the Japanese people, their culture, and their psyche since The Chrysanthemum and the Sword.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An important aid to better understanding........2007-07-24

March's book is a cross section of Japanese people and society, (how people live, think, work and what they value). The books central idea is to provide an insiders guide for non-Japanese that covers a wide variety of topics useful for daily communication and contact. An important aid to better understanding. The author assumes the reader has no knowledge of Japanese culture and explains in detail topics of importance, for example, gift giving, non verbal communication and what it means to be Japanese.

The book will be of particular use to language students, business people, academics and travelers who plan to spend time in Japan. His suggestion of how to best adjust in Japan for foreigners, (learn the language and follow protocol) is sure to be of wide interest.

March's research draws on a wide range of sources and the book's bibliography provides a wide range of references for those who want to explore further reading on the topic.

The impression the book left on me was March's intimate knowledge of the culture and the people. Highlights include his analogy of "living in a box", "ways other than logic" and his detailed investigation and explanation of body use.

I found the book informative and balanced in its approach. For those who have already been to Japan you are to sure to find many new insights in this book.

                      Peter Hanami, July 2007

                      5 out of 5 stars Never offend!.......2006-01-04

Yes, yes, yes - I kept saying when I was reading this book. Seventy-five percent of the international students who had lived with me were Japanese. One of them sent me this book and I thank her forever for an extremely valuable gift. Until then I thought I knew about Japanese culture and habits, but this book was a true eye-opener. The examples were my students. The behaviors were those of my students. The attitudes were displayed by my students.

I would like to give just one example. Before reading this book I took it for granted that when I gave directions and asked "did you understand everything?" and a "yes" accompanied by a nod of the head was the reply, my students would know how to get some place and back. But oftentimes that didn't happen, and they were lost for hours, much to my frustration. The need to please did not allow them to tell me they hadn't understood. After reading the book, I no longer asked. I had them repeat the directions and write them down. They no longer got lost.

This book helped me to better understand and deal with my Japanese students. The knowledge allowed for better communication, assisting them with their culture shock experiences, their homesickness, their unique approach to family, friends, and community.

Anyone considering travel and/or work in Japan or hosting Japanese students in their homes should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good survey of the Japanese sensibility.......1999-10-29

Popular media, stereotypes, etc. have made great strides in misinforming the West about Japan. Japan is much more complex than sushi, martial arts, and electronics; and the people are more realistic than kamikaze businessmen and geisha girls. The Japanese have a very highly evolved social structure, and anyone who is interested in dealing with or studying Japan should read books like this one. Dr. March explains the Japanese pysche in a way that Westerners can understand. He doesn't dramatize their thinking as a sort of sage wisdom, nor does he go out of his way to discredit the Japanese.

There are a few instances, however, in which March places too much emphasis on his personal experiences when drawing conclusions about the Japanese. It cannot be stressed enough that although Japan is a group-oriented society, the people are still individuals. One or two experiences certainly cannot be taken as a definition of the culture.

One must also understand that Japan is changing rapidly. Even the concept of being Japanese is not the same as it was a few decades ago. Conservative people will always be around, but they do not necessarily represent today's Japan.

All in all though, Reading the Japanese Mind is a good guide to the Japanese mindset.

                          Book Description

The first unified and systematic treatment of the modern theory of bargaining, presented together with many examples of how that theory is applied in a variety of bargaining situations. Abhinay Muthoo provides a masterful synthesis of the fundamental results and insights obtained from the wide-ranging and diverse (game theoretic) bargaining theory literature. Furthermore, he develops new analyses and results, especially on the relative impacts of two or more forces on the bargaining outcome. Many topics - such as inside options, commitment tactics and repeated bargaining situations - receive their most extensive treatment to date. In the concluding chapter, he offers pointers towards future research. Bargaining Theory with Applications is a textbook for graduate students in economic theory and other social sciences and a research resource for scholars interested in bargaining situations.

                            Book Description

One of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the South, Charlotte, North Carolina, came of age in the New South decades of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, transforming itself from a rural courthouse village to the trading and financial hub of America's premier textile manufacturing region. In this book, Thomas Hanchett traces the city's spatial evolution over the course of a century, exploring the interplay of national trends and local forces that shaped Charlotte, and, by extension, other New South urban centers.

Hanchett argues that racial and economic segregation are not age-old givens, but products of a decades-long process. Well after the Civil War, Charlotte's whites and blacks, workers and business owners, all lived intermingled in a "salt-and-pepper" pattern. The rise of large manufacturing enterprises in the 1880s and 1890s brought social and political upheaval, however, and the city began to sort out into a "checkerboard" of distinct neighborhoods segregated by both race and class. When urban renewal and other federal funds became available in the mid-twentieth century, local leaders used the money to complete the sorting out process, creating a "sector" pattern in which wealthy whites increasingly lived on one side of town and blacks on the other.

Quite often we learn history from textbooks, study the important dates and persons that influence the lives we live today. Dewey does something quite different from the traditional historian - he, to somewhat quote a famous movie line, "follows the money".

Dewey's Financial History of the United States provides the reader the economics and monetary issues during America's History and how it influenced policy. This book permits the historian to understand fiscal decisions made by our nation's leaders, but also the problems the average American experienced.

What makes this a strong book is that Dewey provides us a deeper understanding of the financial issues America faced (all without having to take a college level business class). I do caution that it's not a historical narrative or a "light" read, but a well researched and written book.

Anyone with an interest in American History, American Economic History or classifies themselves as a "crazy" inquisitive reader of history may enjoy this book. Once done, it makes a wonderful reference for future readings and projects.

                                Book Description

The first history of the origins of the National Advisory Council on International Monetary and Financial Problems (NAC) and its role in foreign financial policy during the early Truman Presidency. It provides an integrated analysis of the NAC's efforts to implement the Bretton Woods multilateral financial system at a time of increasing Cold War tensions. Congress created the NAC in 1945, as a cabinet-level committee to coordinate the U.S. foreign lending and monetary policy and to insure that the newly created IMF and World Bank served U.S. economic interests. This study argues that the NAC, working with limited financial resources, successfully orchestrated the first phase (1945-1948) of the transition from economic bilaterism of the inter-war years to the multilateralism of the late-1950's.

                                          Book Description

"This book provides a mirror to our past--a past that has been ignored or overshadowed for too long." From the foreword by Alex Haley Kern-Foxworth chronicles the stereotypical portrayals of Blacks in advertising from the turn of the century to the present. Beginning with slave advertisements, she discusses how slavery led naturally to the stereotypes found in early advertisements. From the end of the slave era to the culmination of the Civil Rights movement, advertising portrayed Blacks as Aunt Jemimas, Uncle Bens, and Rastuses, and the author explores the psychological impact of these portrayals. With the advent of the Civil Rights movement, organizations such as CORE and NAACP voiced their opposition and became active in the elimination of such advertising. In the final chapters, the volume examines the reactions of consumers to integrated advertising and the current role of Blacks in advertising. Its truly novel subject matter and its inclusion of vintage and contemporary advertisements featuring Blacks make this a valuable work.

5 out of 5 stars Badly needed commentary.......2002-08-10

After the civil war, (segregation notwithstanding) African Americans were technically free people, yet were featured in service products essentially recreating slavery. African Americans were only allowed a public acceptance if they conformed to stereotypical images produced by the larger (predominantely white) society.

Kern-Foxworth's tome provides an eloquent examination of this double bind through brand origins to their modern day counterparts. Early depictions of Aunt Jemima reveal a gross caricturization of Black women's physical features and alleged mannerisms that can never be mistaken for flattery, yet this image was welcomed into many facilities where a living African American irrespective of title would never had been welcome.

Critics of this meticulously researched, spell-binding work could argue the presence of African Americans featured on foodstuffs could be a paean to black visibility via capitalism (where purchasing popularity becomes linked to empowerment/) but the argument would conveniently neglect the undeniably problematic implications of linking African American service and purchase.

Not even a transformation from turbaned servant to the vague "modern woman" has completely resolved very serious cultural contradictions and dilemmas surrounding Aunt Jemima. Is she a tool of the dominant society, a covert agent for revolutionary change or somewhere in between? Through art deconstructing and explore cultural politics, she is positioned as an uneasy reminder of America's less than admirable history of discrimination and bigotry.

Reading this book is tough, but critical for everybody interested in political change and pop culture. Advertising imagery is not inanimate, instead both reflecting and shaping the nation. Encouraging critically thought about the political undertones of pop culture, the author by extension makes profound contributions to civil rights public policy.

3 out of 5 stars Made me hungry..........2000-03-13

I felt bad...because after reading this book about what a horrible, racist image Aunt Jemima is...I was inspired to go get a box of her mix and eat pancakes three meals a day. Very informative book, it goes a bit far in blaming everything in the world on racism...as is the style of the day
