After the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, however, reformers sought a new method--targeting advertising.

                  In Advertising Sin and Sickness, Pamela E. Pennock documents three distinct periods in the history of the national debate over the regulation of alcohol and tobacco marketing. Tracing the fate of proposed federal policies, she introduces their advocates and opponents, from politicians and religious leaders to scientists and businessmen. In the 1950s, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and other religious organizations joined hands in an effort to ban all alcohol advertising. They quickly found themselves at odds, however, with an increasingly urbane mainstream American culture. In the 1960s, moralists took backstage to consumer activists and scientific authorities in the campaign to control cigarette advertising and mandate labeling. Secular and scientific arguments came to dominate policy debates, and the controversy over alcohol marketing during the 1970s and 1980s highlighted the issues of substance abuse, public health, and consumer rights.

                  The politics of alcohol and tobacco advertising, Pennock concludes, reflect profound cultural ambivalence about consumerism and private enterprise, morality and health, scientific authority and the legitimate regulation of commercial speech. Today, the United States continues to face difficult questions about the proper role of the federal government when powerful industries market potentially harmful but undeniably popular products.

                    I am interested in starting a direct marketing business and thought the title of this book was just what I needed. Besides, it is written by a full collection of professionals. But once you start reading it, you realize these guys missed the internet boat. There are a few interisting points, here and there, but you could get them in almost any direct marketing book.

                            it is very difficult to get hold of a copy, but it is definately worth it! It takes you around the world of web ads and how teh consumers react to them.                                 From the supplier: The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC), Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Office of Thrift and Supervision, and the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve System are directing activities by banks and thrift institutions in preparation for the Year 2000 date change problem. The FDIC and its partners have instituted a five-step program of: awareness, assessment, renovation, validation and implementation. Seven formal actions have already been made by the FDIC for violations.

                                  Questions and Answers on Life Insurance is a great primer for anyone with life insurance questions. This is a particularly valuable resource since consumers never know who to believe when they are contemplating buying a policy. After reading this book, you'll increase your chances of obtaining a better policy or you may very well decide you don't need cash value life insurance at all. I share Steuer's belief that most people only need term insurance. If you want a rare unbiased look at insurance, this is your guide.

                                  Thank You, Mr. Steuer! I can now understand the mysterious world of life insurance and why it's so important to be insured. Q&A on Life Insurance was written just for you and me in language that is simple and easy to understand. The best part, it's a non-biased reference without the sales pitch.

                                  I appreciate the easy to find answers. I don't have to dig through pages of information to find what I need. Readers will also appreciate that Mr. Steuer has taken the time to de-code and decipher traditional life insurance lingo. His book is filled with many useful definitions. I had several "ah-ha" moments myself.

                                  A definite MUST-HAVE for your private reference collection.
