This is a very practical and probably one of the best books available for everyone who wants to understand the buzz words of Functional Safety.
The Process Hazards Analysis techniques should be read/studied and understood by all process/instrumentation engineers and plant managers.
That would be a good start and avoid industrial incidents like Bhopal, Piper Alpha, Texas City and unfortunately some more to follow...

              Book Description

The modern corporation is an institution of enormous economic power and social impact. Corporations have grown in size and numbers all over the world because of their ability to mobilize productive resources and create new wealth. The evolution of the corporation has given rise to new opportunities and challenges that require a redefinition of the corporation and its objectives.

The legitimacy of the corporation as an institution, its “license to operate” within society, depends not only on its success in wealth creation but also on its ability to meet the expectations of diverse constituents who contribute to its existence and success. These constituencies and interests are the corporation’s stakeholders—resource providers, customers, suppliers, alliance partners, and social and political actors. Consequently, the corporation must be seen as an institution engaged in mobilizing resources to create wealth and benefits for all its stakeholders.

This book presents a stakeholder view of the corporation in both theoretical and practical terms. Its central proposition is that organizational wealth is created (or destroyed) through a corporation’s interactions with its stakeholders. Effective stakeholder management develops and utilizes relationships between a corporation and its stakeholders for mutual benefit, thereby accomplishing the fundamental purpose of wealth creation.

Following the empirical maxim that “Corporations are what they do,” the authors examine the stakeholder management practices of three major corporations: Cummins Engine Company, Motorola, and the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. These companies are very different, and their current stakeholder management policies and practices have evolved in very different ways. However, they share a common commitment to humanistic values and to continuous learning. Their varied experiences illustrate some of the opportunities and challenges of stakeholder management, and confirm the appropriateness of the stakeholder view of the corporation as a basis for strategy and policy.

5 out of 5 stars lucid exposition and very modern focus.......2002-08-03

Wolfstetter has given us a book that is very much focused on modern microeconomic theory. It is indeed, as the title suggests, a "topics" book, not a universal micro theory textbook. For instance, he does not cover general equilibrium theory at all. But by concentrating on the fascinating newer insights of information economics and industrial economics, he is able to go deeper than most other textbooks, see for instance the outstanding chapter on auction theory. There is even a chapter on matching theory, a topic not usually covered in textbooks at all.

The reader from Pasadena is right when he says that this is a book for academics. This is the audience the book was written for. But this reader is highly unfair for blaming the book for the fact that he is not an academic. In fact, for academics, this is an excellent book, and clearly deserves 5 stars!

              1 out of 5 stars A Book for Academics.......2001-02-15

I believe it was George Bernard Shaw who said "every profession is a conspiracy against the laity." Topics in Microeconomics by Elmar Wolfstetter would fit this quotation. In between the very well written prose are scads of algebraic equations and supply and demand charts that only confuse most readers. This books is written for academics. On the back cover are kudos from other academics who are members of the self-congratulations society. I'm sorry I bought the book. Read Ronald Coase if you want to read an economist who avoids unnecessary abstractions.

5 out of 5 stars It is an excellent book.......2000-04-22

This book provides an extremely thorough and comprehensive treatment of important topics in microeconomics. This work manages to be both rigorous and pleasant to read.

5 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR SALES PROFESSIONALS--WE ALL SELL!!.......2004-02-26

As a consultant, I am forever selling my services or a recommended solution to someone. Do-it-yourselfers like me can use all the sales help we can get. "The 10 Immutable Laws" is a book that I can pick up, start anywhere, read a few pages and find something that helps. I've tried other sales books, but none seemed as complete or conveniently organized. For me, I prefer to read a little, digest, absorb and apply the contents, and then go back for more when I am ready and need it. It could be even better to look for pages that would support the day's activities and read those. In any event, reading straight through, cover to cover could be a bit taxing. Who knows? Using the book regularly, I may even turn into a sales professional.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking - A must read for sales professionals.......2004-01-19

10 Immutable Laws of Power Selling is easily one of the best sales related books I have read. The author succinctly addresses something on the minds of sales professionals today - how to survive in the 'new' environment. The book's ten laws are fantastic -- they're clear and concise and supported with real-life examples and case studies. What really separates this book from other sales-related books I've read, though, is the author's premise that there is a common thread that runs among power sellers -- they are leaders. By explaining what sales leaders do and know, the author gives readers a goal to strive towards--the goal of becoming a sales leader. To me, the book was downright inspiring. After I read it, I couldn't wait to try out the ten laws. Highly recommended reading!

4 out of 5 stars Good summary of customer centric approach.......2004-01-13

If your job is selling then you have to know how to sell no matter what the economy. You have to understand demand for your product and how it adds value to a customer. Although the principles apply to all forms of selling including department store selling, the focus of the book is really on those who sell larger value products where there may be an extended sales cycle. It seems that there are always a few real sales stars with any endeavor. What makes this small percent successful at selling when none around them seem to be able to sell anything? Author James DeSena examines this and has found that there are ten laws that a sales person must understand and use if they want to be one of these power sellers.

These ten immutable laws are 1) create high value, 2) decide on your market, 3) develop customer expertise in your selected market, 4) build relationships for repeat business, 5) start with a leader's perspective, 6) lead from within, 7) make it a team effort, 8) build lasting success, 9) drive toward exceptional results, and 10) manage multiple customer priorities. Each of these laws is given its own chapter to fully develop what the law means and how to apply it in the real world. Mr. DeSena also provides many useful examples with stories from companies such as American Express and Honeywell.

Although there is nothing really new in the book it does represent a summation of the best practices in customer-centric sales theory. "The 10 Immutable Laws of Power Selling" is a recommended read for anyone who wants an understanding of the customer-centric approach to selling and how it provides long-term success as a sales person.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide to keep by your side.......2003-10-27

As a sales training consultant and communication coach I am always looking for the best thinking on the topic of selling. The 10 Immutable Laws of Power Selling is a comprehensive guide on today's best practices. I particularly like the way the book is organized. It is a great guidebook for those new to the sales role and can be a great reference tool for the seasoned professional looking for quick reminders.

                  2 out of 5 stars Not good.......2005-07-14

It doesn't worth more than any other book about fixed income and valuation. Just four chapters about insurance. Poor book.

2 out of 5 stars Standard Fabozzi book.......2005-04-15

2 or 3 chapters specific to the subject (in this case insurance) and the rest is the same fixed income chapters from 20 other Fabozzi books.

                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2004-05-06

David F. Babbel, a professor of insurance and finance, and Frank. J. Fabozzi, a professor of finance, compiled Investment Management for Insurers, an extensive series of articles (including six they wrote) on managing investments. Various experts contributed the other two-dozen plus articles. The book, which is organized in sections based on major investment management topics, focuses first on general insurance issues, such as risk management and setting up a performance management system for insurers. Subsequent articles cover fixed income products, valuation, equity portfolio management and measuring and controlling interest rate risk. This highly technical book may not be sexy, but it is very sophisticated and fully accessorized with tables, charts, graphs, mathematical formulas and footnotes. Let's be clear: it's a book for pros, an in-depth compilation that we recommend to professional and academic specialists in insurance investment management.

From the supplier: Investment and asset management companies in Bermuda are forming alliances with US and overseas fund managers to attract investments from Bermuda-based reinsurers. The vast majority of Bermuda's $70 billion insurance industry assets are managed by overseas asset managers. However, insurers and reinsurers are not likely to switch asset managers easily, thus Bermudian investment companies will have to prove themselves in the areas of service, price and performance.

From the supplier: Acquisitions in the insurance business have shifted from leveraged buyouts (LBOs) to joint efforts involving investment companies and insurers. Disfavor among credit rating agencies and regulators toward LBOs has prompted the trend, says John Hendrickson of Securitas Capital LLC, which invests in insurance firms. The joint approach benefits a financial company because an insurance firm brings operational experience to an acquisition, while an insurer benefits from an investment partner's financial clout.
