    Description:
    This paper constructs an R&D non-scale growth model that includes endogenous human capital. The goal is to take the model's implications to the data once the complementarity between technology and human capital, commonly found in the empirical literature, is taken into account. Our model suggests that intersectoral labor movements induced by the complementarity between human capital and technology can be a key factor in replicating and explaining development experiences such as those of Japan and South Korea. In particular, it is shown that the adjustment paths of output growth, investment rates, interest rates, and labor shares implied by the proposed model are consistent with empirical evidence.

              4 out of 5 stars Asia for Outsiders..........2004-05-27

              Certainly plenty in this book to keep the new comer to Asia fascinated and on their toes but very much written for the "expat" manager ie Westerner relocating to Asia as a new kid in town. Not so frequent nowadays where Asia produces plenty of highly skilled experienced local managers with international experience.
              An entertaining and valuable read for those experienced in Asia as well as newcomers to this fascinating region.

              4 out of 5 stars Offers insights on Asiaýs businesses.......2003-05-02

              This book gathers every aspect of business related issues and offers case studies.
              I highly recommend this book; especially as a tool for expatriate CEOs and Managers who are working or have plans to work in ASIA.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent history.......2002-04-29

              I bought this book after I saw that Booklist named it one of the top ten business books of 2001. It divides each chapter into two parts, each dealing with two investment banking houses that were similar or closely related somehow.The result is excellent. The histories are clear, concise and full of color. Good anecdotes are put in boxes that complement the text. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in Wall Street.

              2 out of 5 stars Barely A Summertime Beach Read.......2002-04-26

              In retrospect, I should have expected this book to be as poorly written as it is. In the course of 300 pages, Professor Geisst attempts to provide the history of approximately 17 banking houses --- which translate into about 18 pages per house. (As a comparison -- Ron Chernow dedicated over 700 pages to the Morgan dynasty in his book. Imagine trying to condense that down into 18 pages). To call such treatments superficial is an understatement. Additionally, the book suffers from organizational flaws, particularly toward the beginning of the work. One even wonders if significant portions of The Last Partnerships were merely taken from Geisst's earlier work, Wall Street: A History, and shuffled around to create a new book.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Wall Street History.......2001-05-09

              This is a great piece of micro Wall Street history. The author looks at the financial district from street level, from the perspective of the Wall Street houses themselves.The stories range from good to fascinating and the asides in some chapters are great anecdotes. How the houses succeeded and why they ultimately dispapeared as partnerships is a great story and it is well told here. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in finance and history.

                    Book Description

                    Since 1945 British governments have played an active role in managing the economy in the interests of securing high employment, economic growth and low inflation with their approach evolving in response to changing economic circumstances, intellectual shifts and past policy failures. This book provides an overview of economic management, particularly financial management, and addresses how it has changed and why it has not always been successful. It examines the actual policies that were introduced, the problems that various governments faced in implementing them and how the approach to policymaking changed. It also examines the main phases of economic policymaking and the conduct of policymaking, as there is a widespread consensus that until recently, short-run economic management could have been more successful than it was.

                    Meyer once again captures the pulse of business today. His observations and strategies are drawn from the boom times and the current downturn. Creating and Dominating New Markets provides insights for CEOs and other managers who want to grow out of their current challenges by focusing on new products and market expansion rather than by cost cutting and retrenching.

                    5 out of 5 stars Will Open Your Thinking!.......2002-03-25

                    So, you're sitting in your office thinking about your business. Or the business you'd like to start. Building a business is a daunting proposition, not for the weak of heart-or weak of wallet. The key is to discover something different that will grab attention. What's the old saw: Find a need and fill it?

                    Peter Meyer, principal of a California (where else) consulting firm that specializes in the subject of this book, suggests a different approach. Instead of competing with everyone else, create a new market. Makes sense. As Meyer points out, it's exciting, fun, and profitable. New markets are forgiving and, without rivals you don't have to worry about competitive pricing. Can it be this easy? Meyer lays it out in Chapter One: The Mystique and Challenges of New Markets. Prepare to have your mind opened, your thoughts stimulated, your imagination titillated.

                    The first part of this highly readable book (type size and leading enables this book to be easily read on trains and airplanes) addresses strategies. The second part with application of the strategies. Good model for this highly practical book.

                    The other chapters of the first section deliver ideas, perspective, and examples of how the strategies have been used. Balancing Your Resources and Opportunities. It's the Problem That Matters. Choosing the Best Risk. What New Markets are Available to You? Are you beginning to get a sense of the depth of content of this book?

                    The book is written in relatively short sections, so the reader never seems overburdened by the volume of text. I kept slowing down...because I was thinking about what Meyer said. Then I found myself taking notes, like I was starting to write a business plan. See what I mean? I predict that you'll read this book at least twice: once for a quick overview, then at least one more time (with Peter Meyer at your elbow) thinking, talking to yourself (and others), and constructing ideas that may drive your future.

                    Charts sprinkled throughout the book will guide in your understanding of the message. So will the questions tossed out by the author. There are many paths to take in creating, exploring, exploiting, and dominating new markets. Each alternative approach has its advantages and disadvantages. Your strength will come from understanding what's involved in your journey, and that power will come from this book.

                    Section Two concentrates on the application of the strategies. Funding the New Market Effort. What Role Does the Customer Play? Building and Dominating Markets Through Involvement. What is the Role of Information Technology. Using Credibility in Creating and Dominating Markets. What's Next? And the book closes with a good index to help you find what you want on your second and third readings.

                    This is the new frontier. You can be on the leading edge. It's a different world, as Meyer warns. If you think you're up for it-and the book will help you determine that readiness, this book will be your guide.

                    Now my review is done. I'm going back for my second helping!

                    Meetings.

                    Just the utterance of the word is enough to make most people dread it. And that's because many meetings fail to deliver what they promise due to poor decision making, the wrong participants, the wrong strategy or any number of reasons.

                    Meetings are a fact of working life, and there will be times when enterprising writers not only attend but also conduct them ~ be they meetings with clients, business pitches or seminars and workshops promoting your services.

                    This book will give you the foundation you need to conduct and participate in meetings with success. While some of the material is common sense, it covers the subject admirably, offering a variety of tips, techniques and strategies that cover all kinds of encounters. Topics include:

                    * Preparing for a meeting
                    - defining the agenda
                    - deciding how to run the meeting

                    * Conducting a meeting
                    - how to present
                    - behavioral aspects of a meeting
                    - communication and leadership styles

                    * Participating in a meeting

                    * How to deal with difficult people and situations
                    - conflict resolution style
                    - problem solving meetings
                    - multicultural meetings

                    * Communication skills
                    - Assertiveness
                    - Non-verbal communication
                    - Persuasive strategies

                    Of particular interest to freelancers are the chapters ~ 'Making a Presentation' and 'Strategies, tools and activities', which provide solid advice on structuring material, opening and closing remarks, answering questions as well as using audio-visual aids.

                    Also of importance are the chapters ~ 'Taking Minutes' and 'Writing it all up and getting action' ~ which deal with note-taking and reporting of the minutes. While the chapters include rudimentary guidance on writing (ie use active voice rather than passive, etc), they do offer helpful information on how to structure the minutes of a meeting and ensure items are actionable and people are accountable.

                    This is a handy reference guide which is easy to read and understand. 'Making Meetings Happen' is primarily designed to be used as a workbook. It features checklists in every chapter as well as worksheets and exercises, so that readers can workshop and hone their skills.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great information concisely written for busy professionals.......2001-09-25

                    Our company library included a copy of Robert Burns' "Making Meetings Happen". This book offers busy professionals everything they should need to improve the meetings they lead and the meetings they attend. Although some of the material is common sense or "you've heard it before", Mr. Burns takes a fresh approach to the topic of meetings and presents it in a very easy to read, concise, entertaining way. Excellent real life examples of meeting situations and how to improve one's approach to handling difficult attendees, hidden agendas, and the inevitable time wasters. Mr. Burns provides many checklists and other practical tools to use for analyzing meetings. I would recommend this book to everyone that attends or conducts meetings.
