1 out of 5 stars Not very useful.......2002-01-13

This book has very little practical value, filled with useless aphorisms. Everything's obvious and purely commonsensical--nothing anyone wouldn't know already. Mostly this is an opportunity for the author to congratulate himself on his career as an advertising executive. This book, too, looks like it was self-printed through a vanity press. Otherwise it would have never made it to the light of day. A waste of money.

      5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful........2001-11-18

What a great, "no-nonsense" guide for people who often make presentations in public. This is a "must-have" for anyone who works in sales or marketing.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Handbook full of tips.......2001-06-29

As Career Planning Host for BellaOnline.com, I read a review copy of this book and interviewed the author. I was very impressed by what he had to offer - easy to read with ideas you can use immediately, this little book can help you improve your presenting.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for presenters..........2000-09-15

A concise, interesting, fast read packed with information on presenting well. Loved the use of the "nevers" as a device. Thought the format was easy to use, quick to read and extremely helpful.

      Book Description

This is a focused and well-organized book with in-depth interpretation of ISO 9001:2000 requirements. It identifies and explains 92 distinct, auditable requirements that must be implemented to pass the certification audit. Every requirement is systematically explained with regard to interpretation, procedures and records, and the way certification auditors will verify conformance. In essence, the book reinterprets the standards into a list of specific actions that need to be taken to achieve conformance, and explains how to implement them in the organization. The list of all requirements discussed in the book is provided under the Table of Contents in the Book Information menu on the left side of this page.

2 out of 5 stars Decent explanation, no examples........2006-06-17

The author does a decent job explaining ISO requirements. Contrary to the other reviewer's claims, there are "no" examples in the book. Another useful tool would have been examples of ISO systems / process flowchart. Instead, the author tries to get you to buy his software if you want to see any example at all. I give the book 2 stars because it tries to do marketing instead of doing it's job of giving buyers useful information.

Based on the title of the book "ISO 9001 Requirements", the author did do his job explaining what the requirements are. However, if you want to do ISO in order to improve the quality system of your company, as opposed to just getting a piece of paper saying that your company is ISO certified, then look for another book.

This book is wonderfully written and the author really does a nice job presenting the information clearly. Our company also purchased the software documentation quality manual and procedure package that really complemented the book and its information. The author presents and suggests information throughout the software presentation that is all within the ISO standard. This approach allowed our company to be as flexible in editing the manual and procedures as necessary. During our assessment process, how well written and the structure of our documentation was specifically noted. Jack Kanholm is a foremost authority in the area of ISO standards and their structured approach to organizational improvement. He has several books on the subject to his credit. We were certified to the new standard thanks in part to Jack Kanholm's book, software, and his organization.

This is a must read for anyone charged with ensuring the success of the changeover to the new ISO standard. Kanholm identifies each auditable requirement of the 2000 standard, explains how those requirements should be satisfied on the level of documentation, implementation and records and offers insight as to how auditors might verify compliance with each requirement. The book is filled with examples which pertain to both large and small organizations. It is well-written, easily understood, and should be on the shelf of every ISO quality professional. If you have any doubt about the ability of your organization to re-certify, you need to order this excellent book today.

      Book Description

Shows how managers in any organizational setting can improve their own and their teams' results through a unique, step-by-step approach to setting goals and then--most importantly--by putting them into action. Curtis lays bare the linkages between organizational culture, philosophy, ethics, and the management of information and change, and shows how they contribute to goal setting and achievement. Throughout Curtis argues that deciding "what to do" may be an essential component of goal setting, but the real challenge is in "getting things done," and it is here that so many goal-setting systems fail. Part I begins by establishing the foundation for the remainder of the book. It addresses the managerial philosophy underlying goal setting. The theory of goal setting is covered in Part II. Studies are reviewed that show that organizations, teams, and individuals that set clear, challenging goals produce better results than those who do not. The next part begins by addressing goal setting from an organizational perspective. Team goal setting follows. Techniques for individual goal setting are discussed in Part V. Part VI pulls organizational, team, and individual goal setting together by examining the ways information must be managed in a goal-oriented setting. Part VII, Change and Goal Setting, provides the techniques necessary to implement the goal-setting philosophy in a rapidly changing world. The book concludes with an examination of the ultimate purpose of management, to produce positive results.

4 out of 5 stars A Serious and Interesting Reading on Goals.......2004-10-25

A fruitful scientific approach, putting things into their places - the vision encompasses the organization's purpose, philosophy, mission, and goals. A strategy determines how to attain that vision. Gives definitions of the most important terms in goal-setting theory. Believable and readable.

        Book Description

Professor Junhao Hong provides the first systematic study of China's television, the largest and one of the most complicated television systems in the world. China's television represents a highly complicated communication system, a powerful ideological machine, and a unique social manifestation. As Professor Hong illustrates, during the past 20 years, since the country's reform, television has experienced tremendous changes. While many studies of media globalization attribute the phenomenon mainly to external factors--new technologies, global capital flows, and quality production of Western programming--Hong argues that in many countries internal factors, such as government policy and the evolution of society, play decisive roles for change. Based on firsthand data and interviews with China's high-ranking officials and policymakers this study will be of considerable value to scholars and researchers dealing with mass media/television issues in the developing world and with contemporary China.

            Book Description

At the time of original publication in 1927, the publisher said: "Based upon Morgan's Ancient Society and other fundamental works of social science, Evolution of Society views the present plight of society and forecasts future social possibilities in terms of mankind's development of the tools of wealth production and of the mode of exchange. It is, in effect, a Marx-Morgan-DeLeon synthesis." Marriage, property and governmental institutions are traced from their origins in ancient society, through their forms in class-ruled society, to their probable forms in the classless society of Socialism. "The book's examination of class-ruled society emphasizes the need for the Industrial Republic of Emancipated Labor."

                  Book Description

This compelling book focuses on the global formation of the Internet system. It contests the common belief that the Internet's adoption was inevitable and instead examines the social and economic processes that allowed to it to prevail over competing standards and methods for achieving a global information infrastructure. The author demonstrates how the current Internet system was not the only possible choice, nor the best data network in terms of technological and economic performance. It is therefore vital, he argues, to understand the way in which different political and economic interests have helped shaped the Internet and allowed it to overcome rival technologies. Issues of particular importance include the role of negotiations among different social groups in the design of the Internet as well as the influence of US promotion. The author also examines patterns of growth and pervasiveness of the Internet between different regions and countries, providing new evidence on the factors influencing the extent of the `digital divide'. Using econometric models, he goes on to identify the features of the co-evolution of the Internet and other sub-systems within countries, and highlights the most interesting features of their local and global interplay. Researchers and academics involved with science and technology policy, industrial and corporate change, and the information society will welcome this insightful, original and highly pertinent book. It will also be of value for anyone with an interest in how the backbone of the digital economy was formed.

                            Book Description

What happened to the so-called "golden age" of the postwar boom? Unprecedented rates of economic growth, profitability, and wage increases during the 1950s and 60s have given way to a global capitalist economy in disarray. Reassessing common interpretations of postwar economic history and
geography, this book focuses on the evolution of the global economy from the 1950s to the present. Based on extensive research, the book assesses histories of
growth, profitability, and technological change in core industrial economies (Japan and the USA), raw material dependent economies (Australia and
Canada), and several newly industrializing countries (Brazil, South Korea, and Taiwan). The authors build on standard models of economic change to
incorporate new developments in regional dynamics: they use nonlinear, nonequilibrium, and evolutionary arguments to frame discussions of
profit rates, technological change, and interregional capital flows.

It's a rare business book that purports to systematically measure the impact of a business strategy, especially as one as broad as advertising. Based on a panel of 2,000 households across the US, Jones reports findings based on the evaluation of 142 branded product advertising programs. He concludes that while advertising produced an average increase of 24% in short term sales and an average increase of 6% in long term sales, he find that the majority of campaigns (60%) are relatively neutral, 20% contribute to increased consumption, and 20% actually diminish sales, at least in the short run. This is a stark reminder that any company can advertise, but its the quality not the quantity that counts

                                Book Description

This book explores some of the complexities of decision-making under risk and uncertainty in environmental and natural resource economics. Risk and uncertainty are inherent problems for economists, and the authors in this volume offer numerous challenges and opportunities to improve the tools we use to assess these concepts.

They begin by studying various environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity conservation to underline the importance of identifying different forms of uncertainty and irreversibility. They move on to consider the implications risk and uncertainty have on economic development and environmental policies, and study the attitudes of different user-groups to these issues. Finally, they examine the natural resource management dilemmas faced by the private sector including issues of optimal resource allocation, insurance problems and consumer behavior.

Presenting cutting-edge research on the management of the environment under risk and uncertainty, this book will interest and inform academics and researchers in the fields of environmental and resource economics, and decision-makers in governmental and non-governmental agencies. It will also be of value to economists who want to understand the importance of analyzing the impact of risk and uncertainty on environmental and economic processes.

                                  Book Description

The 1980s and 1990s have been a period of exciting new developments in the modelling of decision-making under risk and uncertainty. Extensions of the theory of expected utility and alternative theories of `non-expected utility' have been devised to explain many puzzles and paradoxes of individual and collective choice behaviour. This volume presents some of the best recent work on the modelling of risk and uncertainty, with applications to problems in environmental policy, public health, economics and finance. Eighteen papers by distinguished economists, management scientists, and statisticians shed new light on phenomena such as the Allais and St. Petersburg paradoxes, the equity premium puzzle, the demand for insurance, the valuation of public health and safety, and environmental goods.
Audience: This work will be of interest to economists, management scientists, risk and policy analysts, and others who study risky decision-making in economic and environmental contexts.

                                    Book Description

Economic values are increasingly used in policy analysis and legal settings. With the growing recognition that many of the things that benefit or harm people are outside the market system, have come increasing efforts to develop nonmarket valuation techniques. One such technique is the contingent valuation method (CVM). CVM seeks to value environmental and other nonmarket goods and services by asking individuals about their values using survey methods. These procedures are different from the `revealed-preference' methods that economists have historically employed to estimate economic values.
Why depart from well-established revealed-preference procedures and apply a `stated-preference' method like CVM? For nonmarket goods and services, revealed-preference methods have two shortcomings that those applying CVM hope to avoid. First, revealed-preference methods involve econometric problems that have yet to be fully overcome. The second shortcoming of revealed-preference methods is that such methods, when applied to environmental amenities, are likely to be only partial measures of value.
Given the tremendous interest that exists in economic values and the limitations of revealed-preference methods, it is not surprising that interest in CVM has grown rapidly. Environmental Resource Valuation reviews the application of CVM and compares American experiences in nonmarket evaluation with those in other countries.
