    Book Description

Research is becoming an important part of business schools' activities. As a scientific field that is both relevant and cross-disciplinary, business studies is at the center of many important issues in the philosophy of science. Management and business economics are often seen as a fragmented research area without any unifying paradigm. That may be the case, but diversity is perhaps not necessarily bad - there may be dimensions other than paradigms that serve to unify the areas. This collection of papers arises out of the activity of the European Doctoral Programmes Association in Management and Business Administration and reflects the situation in the field as seen mainly through the eyes of advanced doctoral students. Issues concerning rationality and postmodernity, paradigms and social construction, theory building and application of knowledge to practical problems are treated. The philosophical problems are seen in relation to actual research projects concerning such diverse topics as privatization, fish farming and technological change. Hans Siggaard Jensen is Director of the Doctoral Programme at the Copenhagen Business School. Tom Elfring is Professor at the Department of Strategic Management & Business Environment, Rotterdam School of Management. Arthur Money is Professor of Management Studies at the Henley Management College.

        Book Description

"Renewal" is a holistic health center run by baby boomers whose political ideals were shaped by the counterculture movements of the 1960s. Through interviews and observation, Sherryl Kleinman takes us inside Renewal and shows us how its members struggled to maintain a view of themselves as progressive and alternative even as they sought conventional legitimacy.

In Opposing Ambitions we meet the members of Renewal as individuals; learn about the differences in power, prestige, and respect they are accorded; why they talked endlessly about money; and how they related to each other. Kleinman shows how members' attempts to see themselves as unconventional, but also as serious operators of a legitimate health care organization, led them to act in ways that undermined their egalitarian goals. She draws out the lessons Renewal offers for understanding the problems women face in organizations, the failure of social movements to live up to their ideals, and how it is possible for progressives to avoid reproducing the inequalities they claim to oppose.

Aside from being a guide for ISO it is also a great book for creating and improving any process. The book reveals new ways to look at problems. It has proven very helpful in my work as program manager.

5 out of 5 stars Direct and concise........1998-05-23

This book explains the registration process step-by-step. It contains interpretation of the ISO standards, as well as important addresses. The book's methods may be applied to any project or business implementation because it integrates different business management principles.

                Book Description

These essays explore what happens when a skilful economist makes unconventional assumptions. Economic theory has traditionally relied upon a tacit and ‘classical’ set of assumptions that have gradually acquired a life of their own in defining how economists write and how they justify economic models. Similarly, these assumptions have acquired an autonomous character: they guide the way economists think about the world. In consequence, consideration of alternative assumptions has become taboo. These essays are substantively and stylistically novel because they break these taboos and bring new assumptions into economic theory. The papers apply this adventurous approach to a wide range of issues - from insurance markets and trade in underdeveloped countries to unemployment and discrimination. Some of the essays derive the implications for economic markets of costly asymmetric information. Others explore the findings of other social sciences such as anthropology, psychology and sociology.

Beautifully simple models to explain common phenomena economically. Why do the values of used cars depreciate so much relative to new? (and why are there so many that are "lemons"). Does it make sense to use statistical indicators (e.g., be racist or otherwise biased)? When?

Lots of simple models in the spirit of Becker. A must read.

                  Book Description

One Kind of Freedom examines the economic institutions that replaced slavery and the conditions under which ex-slaves were allowed to enter the economic life of the United States following the Civil War. The authors contend that although the kind of freedom permitted to black Americans allowed substantial increases in their economic welfare, it effectively curtailed further black advancement and retarded Southern economic development. The new edition of this economic history classic includes a new introduction by the authors, an extensive bibliography of works in Southern history published since the appearance of the first edition, and revised findings based on newly available data and statistical techniques.

I was a student of Dr. Ransom at the University of California, Riverside, and I majored in history. Though Dr. Ransom generally is considered an economist, he--more than anyone I've ever read or heard lecture--is able to articulate and present economics within its proper historical parameters, and show you exactly how, for example, whatever historical event is occurring, this is how it affected the world--the people--economically.

4 out of 5 stars Economics for Historians.......2001-09-08

In essence, this is an economic interpretation of Southern history in the late nineteenth century based primarily on statistical data. The authors began this project when they noticed the scarcity of scholarship concerning the economic institutions which took the place of slavery in the South; they felt it necessary for the understanding of the Negro experience to understand the manner in which the Negro entered into a nonbinding economic lifestyle in the years after the War Between the States and Reconstruction. A primary concern of the authors was the economic malaise of the South agriculturally and certainly industrially in the period from 1865 to 1914, a time of impressive economic growth elsewhere in the nation.

The authors devote much of their study to a region they define as the Cotton South, wherein they see homogeneous development. They stress the fact that they are economists and not historians--political, social, and cultural history are beyond the scope of this book. While the authors may at times refer to economic effects of noneconomic forces, they make no attempt to do anything more than offer an economic interpretation of the post-emancipation South; that alone signifies their contribution to the historical field. In the end, they give their ideas as to the evolution of a Southern economy that exploited farmers--white and black--and allowed for little or no industrial development.

                                Book Description

Effective marketing techniques lie within the reach of both large and small companies with limited marketing budgets. Low-Cost Marketing Strategies is a comprehensive guide to developing workable and affordable marketing strategies for such firms. After discussing modifications in the marketing mix that could benefit low-budget firms, the book provides practical information on such specific topics as the organization of marketing departments, do-it-yourself public relations techniques, problems of using standard direct marketing tools, the recruitment and training of sales people, price structures, and market research. In addition, an appendix contains valuable materials such as sample phone scripts, releases, and reply cards.

                                    Book Description

The efficiency of enterprise operation is seriously constrained by the inability to provide the right information, in the right place, at the righttime. It is still difficult to access information used or produced by different applications, due to the hardware and software incompatibilities of manufacturing and information processing equipment. It is the aim of the ESPRIT project AMICE (European Computer Integrated Manufacturing Architecture) to make the enterprise knowledge base available enterprise-wide. This book reports work carried out in the framework of the ESPRIT project AMICE on CIMOSA (Open System Architecture for Computer Integrated Manufacturing). CIMOSA provides a new approach for enterprise modelling. It is based on a reference architecture for common and consistent enterprise description, a system lifecycle definition focusing on model maintenance and update rather than model creation, and an integrating infrastructure for model engineering and execution that enables enterprise operation control and monitoring in heterogeneous environments. This second edition significantly extends thespecification of CIMOSA in several ways. Constructs for modelling resources and organizational aspects and an extended frameworkfor the integrating infrastructure are presented. A user guide is given for requirements modelling. Case-study examples are used to demonstrate templates for CIMOSA modelling constructs. Finally several AMICE technical reports address specific subjects.

                                                  Book Description

This book examines the critical period in the development f the modern life insurance business. The discussion of ideology, managerial and business techniques, the foreign market, investment policies, and government regulation centers on the Big Five. The New York Life, Equitable Life, Mutual Life, and Metropolitan Life insurance companies in New York and the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark at the end of the nineteenth century possessed enormous power. Their problem was how to accommodate themselves to the conditions of a free society.

Keller vividly portrays the quest for power of a late-nineteenth-century American corporate group—their sophisticated business, marketing, and investment techniques; the attempt to persuade the State Department and its ambassadors to assist American companies expanding into the foreign market; and the use of the enterprise's substantial assets to influence state and federal regulation. Finally, he sketches the beginning of the end of power with the Armstrong Investigation of 1905 and the legislation that followed.
