    Book Description

What lies at the heart of financial regulation? Economic principles? Public interest motives? Bureaucratic procedures? Many academics have extensively written on financial regulation. Rarely, practitioners, and in particular European practitioners, have had their say, the opportunity to express their views on how financial regulation is and should be governed. The book attempts to fill that gap: heads of Securities Commissions, representatives of self-regulatory organizations and exchanges, lawyers, have debated on the different issues of regulation. They draw the lessons from their experience and their regulatory achievements.

            Book Description

Smart Things to Know About Six Sigma lets managers and executives bridge the gap between the theory and the practical application of Six Sigma. With its track record as an effective way to cut down production defects and costs, Six Sigma has become hugely popular since Jack Welch used it to famous effect during his time at General Electric. This book offers an integrated approach to Six Sigma that combines best practice examples with a practical mechanism for implementation. It is also unique in showing how companies can close the performance gap between what they can do and what they actually achieve. The book also examines the top twenty Six Sigma Analyses and explains their use.

'Anyone who claims to think strategically has to read this exciting book. Baden-Fuller and Stopford turn a lot of conventional management thinking on its head. Just reading it gives one hope.' - Charles Handy, author of The Empty Raincoat. 'At a time of extreme and exaggerated gloom about British industry, it is refreshing to read a book which shows how, even in the most uncompromising circumstances, good management can turn sick companies into world leaders ... The message is optimistic ... managers would do well to read this book, and act on it' - Geoffrey Owen, Financial Times

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for managers engauged in radical change........1998-06-22

This is an exciting and well written book. It argues persuasively that maturity is not cast in stone - it is a state of mind. It is possible to turnaround and sustain success in mature markets. The key theme is that firms, and in the end managers, are the key engine of success not the industry in which one competes.

As the authors note, the average profitability of an industry is not the same as the individual firm. An industry may perform badly because on average firms are failing to add real value to the customer. In this environment the innovative firm can sweep aside the competition and be highly profitable. The authors show the reader how this is possible!

The authors draw their argument from rich case examples both from the USA and Europe. Their industry foci are diverse, encompassing the services and manufacturing sectors, and firms who compete in both consumer and industrial markets. Examples of sectors drawn upon in this book include Retail Banking (Banc One), Mass Fashion (Benetton), Kitchen Knives (Richardson Sheffield), Fibres (Courtelle), Industrial Pumps (Edwards) and Domestic Appliances (Hotpoint).

From these cases the authors argue that the key to competitive success is innovation in both business processes and products or services. The most powerful contribution of this book is to offer guidance on how senior management can shape a rejuvenation programme. The Crescendo Model of Rejuvenation is the centre piece of the book. The model advises that the process of rejuvenation moves from galvanising the top team, simplify the tasks that the business addresses, build organisational capabilities and leverage to maintain momentum. Interestingly, important in this process is small scale experimentation, rather than grandiose 'bet the company' projects. Practical cases and advise guide the reader through the process.

The book is excellent both in terms of content and writing style. I strongly recommend it both to practising managers and students of management.

3 out of 5 stars A serious work for those interested in serious results........1997-07-01

"Its industry is not to blame for any shortcomings in the performance of a business" The authors of this valuable book show how Benneton, Hotpoint, Banc One and others have achieved major successes in so-called mature industries. It doesn't matter how unpromising the industry; success is within reach of innovators. Ample detail provides a framework for your renewal effort

                Book Description

Organizations can rejuvenate and seek industry leadership-even when their industry is hostile-if their manager reject standard industry recipes and create innovative new products, services and most important, strategies. Illustrated by many examples drawn from a wide range of international businesses, Rejuvenating the Mature Business challenges conventional theories in strategic management and shows how immense progress has been achieved, even with limited resources, by creating entrepreneurial organizations that capture and gain leverage from experimentation, imagination, and skill enhancement at all levels.

From the supplier: The International Stock Exchange of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland (UK Stock Exchange) is now requiring all companies listed on the UK Stock Exchange to report their risk management controls annually. The new requirement to the exchange's Code of Best Practices adds importance to risk management, for the first time, and could set a pattern for future US and other countries' annual board of directors and stockholder reports. Corporations must list possible risks, efforts to control risks, risk management budgets and the effectiveness of internal risk controls.

                          Book Description

The Stock Exchanges of Ireland traces the evolution of the markets which have operated in Ireland from their emergence (Dublin at the end of the eighteenth century, and later Belfast and Cork in the nineteenth) to the mid-1980s when this book was published.

It starts with the historical circumstances - the beginnings of the Irish National Debt in the mid-eighteenth century and the problems of government borrowing in time of peace and war - which preceded the formation, in 1799, of the Dublin Stock Exchange. Later chapters examine many aspects of the market's development during the nineteenth century: changes in its practices and customs; the origins of some of the oldest surviving broking firms; the important trade in government securities between London and Dublin; the Irish railways; and the formation of joint stock companies in Ireland. Finally, the role of the Stock Exchange in the finance of government and industry since Irish independence is fully covered.

Throughout, The Stock Exchanges of Ireland is soundly based on the surviving records (to which the author was granted full access) of the three Irish markets - Dublin, Cork and Belfast. Important new material was also obtained from the Irish Record Office, the National Library of Ireland, the archives of the Bank of Ireland and the Record Office of the Bank of England.

The book makes a comprehensive and significant contribution to Irish and financial history, and will prove an essential work of reference. It is also a lively, readable account of growth, change and development in the Irish markets, which should interest all concerned with banking, finance, investment and stockbroking.

A wonderful look into the world of advertising. Great stories about companies we all know and ads which we all remember. Entertaining whether one is in the business of advertising or simply a comsuer of those products. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars It Really Was A Golden Age.......2002-11-26

This is a wonderful, charming book about advertising in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. Wally Bregman's first hand accounts kept me glued to this book, and I couldn't stop smiling/laughing as I moved from story to story. This is a book for anyone who works in advertising, marketing and the world of business--whether you experienced the Golden Age firsthand or just starting out today. And, the wonderful thing is that a lot of great advertising was produced by dedicated people who really had their clients interests at heart. The stories in this book, in my opinion, indicate that you can have some fun making ads while making money for the advertisers who pay the bills.

The work describes probabilistic dimensions to decision-making.
There is a good treatment of conditional probability and
expected value theories. The work introduces decision theory
with experiments and probabilistic outcomes. Bierman provides
a good explanation of the simplex solution by:
                              1. selecting m+n-1 routes which provide an initial basic
                              feasible solution
                              2. Check whether or not the solution is improved by introducing
a non-basic variable. If so, continue.
                              3. Determine whether or not the route leaves basis , when the
entered variable is computed. Adjust flows of the basic
                              routines.
                              4. When all solution sets are (-), then the solution is optimal.

This work can be supplemented by other works by Bierman or
by the Operations Research works by Wagner.
