    5 out of 5 stars Collection of Real-world Examples.......2004-08-13

While most books about assessment focus on the concepts and principles related to assessment to the exclusion of practical advice, this book provides over 60 case studies from a variety of institutions with multiple examples of assessment in the major, general education, student development, in the classroom, and institutional effectiveness. While this is not the only book you should read or have on assessment, it is a valuable companion piece with an extraordinary set of examples.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for New Writers Breaking In.......2007-09-19

This is a wonderful book that describes the business side of literary agencies, publishing houses and the relationship between the two that makes the publishing wheel go round. He offers loads of contractual tips and explainations of your rights - which is very important.

I read his book when I was shopping my own book Never Trust A Man In Alligator Loafers. I still refer to it and brush up on contract knowledge and rights.

If you're wondering if you need a literary agent - my answer is yes!

5 out of 5 stars An essential for writers .......2007-05-12

The title is a bit misnomered since in effect an author cannot be his own literary agent and to access editors at the major publishing houses the screening of a representative is now required by most. That aside, the book is a treasury of essential insider information for not only the newbie but for an author like myself who after having seven books published is still struggling to get his work into print.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative, Packed with Information.......2006-03-27

Writers, find out about the business-side of writing with this easy read.

Find out how Agents decide which projects to take on and which to return with note: "sorry, not interested." And if a publisher wants to make a deal with you, find out how to understand the contract.

    Best,
    Shalla

5 out of 5 stars To help writers understand the publishing industry.......2005-07-30

The title "How to be Your Own Literary Agent" may be misleading for some people, who may take it to mean that by reading this book, one can skip the need of querying for agents. It doesn't help you get published; it says you still have to have agents to get into big publishing houses, but it does give an insider detailed view of the agent business and the publishing industry.

For the aspiring writer, most of the information is interesting but not useful, as the book itself admits - who in the world dares to bargain with the editor anyway, when he is ready to kiss the editor's feet for agreeing to publish his first book? However, for people who wish to become professional writers, such knowledge will certainly come in handy after one becomes published.

The book reads smooth and is extremely funny, making it a pleasurable bedtime reading. I finished it around 3 a.m. with a sore neck. For example, Mr. Curtis mentions this client who claimed to be a mafia hit man. As a result, he had little trouble getting his royal check on time - he'd simply call the publisher and say "if my royalty check ain't ready by noon tomorrow, I'm gonna marry you to a plate-glass window." (p.114)

As one can imagine, the publisher was quick to meet this guy's special needs. Then one day the poor guy was found shot dead outside some motel. Mr. Curtis didn't think the publisher did it.

I highly recommend this book to any writer.

5 out of 5 stars If you write.......2005-07-28

If you write and consider selling your work this is a must read.

4 out of 5 stars Effective, but tests your patience.......2004-03-11

Essentially, a quality reference book. I'm a remodeler and general contractor in Madison, WI. I've used this book to establish budgetary figures for homes I buy, renovate and flip. Being accurate with this book means being patient and flipping back and forth to find every little detail, but the time pays off - Means brings me in at or just above my actual costs. Couldn't ask for much more, except the layout according to the CSI Master Format doesn't make it easy to find all the right items and numbers. Also, Means doesn't allow for things like the style, height or complexity of the roof when determining cost to install shingles - so just be careful and remember to add in that contingency at the end. And don't forget to add local sales tax, if you have to pay it. (In my opinion, this book is better than Means Residential Repair and Remodel guide - that book gives you less options. However, it is organized they way you might layout a project. It's also easier to get a final number, but you defintely have to up your contingency factor because it's not as accurate.) If you're a remodeler, buy Detailed Residential Costs and use it - it'll save you time and money in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars 2007 Edition: Excellent reference for budgeting or estimating.......2006-12-28

The 2006 Edition is a worthwhile buy and pays for itself quickly. I wish I had bought it much earlier in my home budgeting process. The information is well organized in a user-friendly manner. It even has cost adjustment factors for hundreds of cities. This should help you to be prepared somewhat before you start negotiating with builders and contractors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you are building your own home.......1999-08-25

This is an excellent book for estimating the costs involved in building a new home. It provides enough detail to get a good idea on costs. It is not as detailed as some of the other books out there but for a person like myself it has proved to be an invaluable tool. And it is easy enough to use as opposed to some of the other books out there.

The idea that sugar, plantations, slavery, and capitalism were all present at the birth of the Atlantic world has long dominated scholarly thinking. In nine original essays by a multinational group of top scholars, Tropical Babylons re-evaluates this so-called "sugar revolution." The most comprehensive comparative study to date of early Atlantic sugar economies, this collection presents a revisionist examination of the origins of society and economy in the Atlantic world.

Focusing on areas colonized by Spain and Portugal (before the emergence of the Caribbean sugar colonies of England, France, and Holland), these essays show that despite reliance on common knowledge and technology, there were considerable variations in the way sugar was produced. With studies of Iberia, Madeira and the Canary Islands, Hispaniola, Cuba, Brazil, and Barbados, this volume demonstrates the similarities and differences between the plantation colonies, questions the very idea of a sugar revolution, and shows how the specific conditions in each colony influenced the way sugar was produced and the impact of that crop on the formation of "tropical Babylons"--multiracial societies of great oppression.

4 out of 5 stars The prehistory of Anglo history in the New World.......2006-11-10

Sugar is grown in more than 100 countries today, and its history is, in some sense, the history of the expansion toward globalism. It took thousands of years to migrate from (probably) New Guinea to India, hundreds to then reach the Mediterranean, only scores to traverse the Atlantic, first hopping to the islands of Madeira and the Canaries, then, on to the Caribbean and the Mainland.

For readers in the United States, sugar shows up in the late 17th century or even later. England's richest American colony, Barbados, was not settled until 1630, did not start producing sugar for a generation after that. Barbadians later moved to South Carolina, bringing ideas of slavery and agriculture that influenced American history profoundly.

However, sugar had been in the New World (if you count the previously unknown islands like Madeira) for two centuries before English-speaking people became intimately concerned. The history of those two centuries is Spanish, Portuguese and African, and most of the essayists in 'Tropical Babylon' are in the Latin tradition.

The Barbadians learned about sugar from the Portuguese or perhaps the Dutch, who seized Portugal's sugar plantations in Brazil for a while. As the essayists show here, there were several sugar traditions for the English (and roughly simultaneously the French) to learn from.

The approach of 'Tropical Babylons' is primarily economic, but there is a great deal of social and even some architectural history here.

These essays are pitched to scholars and students, and fairly specialized ones at that, yet the story of sugar is rewarding in itself, so much so that a reader who 'likes history' will find a lot of miscellaneous facts, perhaps an 'ah ha!' moment or two that illuminates his understanding of better known (to readers of early American) history.

                Book Description

This two-volume set provides the reader with an insight into the wide range of uniforms, weapons and field equipment used by the Imperial German Army during the First World War. The devastating and dramatic character of the war required many innovations in military clothing and equipment. New uniforms and adequate protection was a must, and steel helmets appeared on the battlefield, replacing the outdated spiked helmets. Even medieval-looking items, like steel breastplates and trench clubs, were produced, giving the soldiers a fearful appearance. The threat of poison gas caused the immediate development of gas masks. It was also the time of the tank, observation balloons, mine warfare, the Zeppelin, airplanes, flame-throwers, deadly machine guns, and other war machinery that saw service, sometimes for the first time. Using over 1,000 color and period photographs from private collections and museums, the author succeeds in showing a broad range of artifacts, together with full and to the point descriptions. This series is aimed towards the novice or advanced German World War I collector and enthusiast, military history student, modeller, researcher and re-enactor.

I did not think this book touched on the topics I was interested in. I was looking for a book that focused on planning and executing a "Sales Meeting"; more of a meeting planner book. The book is valuable for a Sales Person, it covers different ways of handling sales calls, more than Sales Meetings.

Smart Things To Know About Knowledge Management is a worthwhile book for physicians to read. The clear language avoids abstract theoretical postulates and jargons. Techniques are clearly explained. In keeping with the editorial guidelines of the Smart Things Series, the key concepts of value, organization, storage and exchange of information are comprehensively, yet concisely analyzed. Koulopoulos and Frappaolo have written a useable introductory text on knowledge management for business, healthcare and medical practitioners.

Knowledge management sounds impressive over the water cooler, but what exactly is it? We advise you to spend some time pondering this question before you invest a single dollar on KM systems or consultants. A great place to start is this introductory text by Thomas M. Koulopoulos and Carl Frappaola, KM consultants extraordinaire. Starting from square one, the book defines knowledge management, identifies the theories behind it, explains its critical components and examines implementation strategies and results. Of course, any book reflects its subject matter, so this one is thick with jargon and heavy with somewhat abstract concepts like open culture and continuous renewal. The ultimate return on current knowledge management investments remains to be seen, and for that reason we [...] recommend this detailed explanation to any executive who might one day find himself faced with a critical decision about KM strategy.

This book has many interesting ideas that are repeated. The author's previous book Corporate Instinct was a much better read.

Smart Things to Know About Six Sigma lets managers and executives bridge the gap between the theory and the practical application of Six Sigma. With its track record as an effective way to cut down production defects and costs, Six Sigma has become hugely popular since Jack Welch used it to famous effect during his time at General Electric. This book offers an integrated approach to Six Sigma that combines best practice examples with a practical mechanism for implementation. It is also unique in showing how companies can close the performance gap between what they can do and what they actually achieve. The book also examines the top twenty Six Sigma Analyses and explains their use.

                                              Book Description

We all know that the future is uncertain, but rather than make any attempt to actively manage our futures in a consistent way, we tend to make broadbrush assumptions based on common-sense and intuition alone. Successfully managing risk is a primary ingredient for success in a fast-paced environment where we are bombarded by the need to make critical decisions, often with little or no solid facts available and little insight into the likely outcomes.
Smart Things to Know About Risk Management, in a step-by-step approach, shows the reader what is risk management and why it matters, the categories of risk, how to achieve the right balance of risk, knowing your risk appetite, how to actively manage your risks and develop a risk culture and techniques, tools and models for managing risk. Case studies are also included.
                                              * Perfect for the SMART treatment - this book starts from basics, assumes no prior knowledge and gives a step-by-step approach.

As there's no table of content here on Amazon, I would like to take the priviledge to type it for you as below:-

                                              Introduction: You cant escape risk
                                              1. The foundation of risk management
                                              2. Categories of risk
                                              3. Smart thinking I: know your risk appetite
                                              4. Smart thinking II: Formalize the process
                                              5. Smart thinking III: Develop a risk culture
                                              6. Smart thinking IV: Learn from success and failure
                                              7. Risk management and decision support
                                              8. Risk management and innovation
                                              9. Looking forward to a risk free culture

As you can infer from the above, the book is very qualitative. Well written samples and analysis are plenty. However, little had been discussed on the quantitative elements to help putting risk management into real practice and so many readers may find it not really useful at all. Helpful or not, depends.
