    Book Description

This newly-revised title clearly explains the major changes that have recently been made to the nation's bankruptcy laws. Specific changes will prevent people from eliminating credit card debt and other unsecured loans by filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 7, and forcing them to file under Chapter 13, a court-supervised repayment plan. In addition, while not totally eliminating the homestead exemption, there will be a cap on the amount that can be sheltered in a bankruptcy filing.

This new edition explains in simple language: € What bankruptcy is € How bankruptcy works € How to analyze your finances € What property you can keep € How to deal with creditors

A new glossary, appendix with valuable web site information, state-by-state exemptions and easy-to-use, blank tear-out forms make this book the most current product available.

                      Book Description

For almost two decades, acclaimed education scholar and current president of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Lee S. Shulman has been bringing uncommon wit, passion, and vision to issues of teaching and learning in higher education. Teaching as Community Property brings together a brilliant collection of Shulman's papers and presentations since 1987, giving readers a unique window into his ideas and proposals for the improvement of teaching and learning in higher education. What emerges is a vision of Shulman's overarching agenda--to improve the quality of teaching for all students by making teaching a more respected dimension of all the disciplines and professional fields.

4 out of 5 stars Challenge to raise the bar for higher education instruction.......2004-05-19

This collection of essays and speeches by Shulman presents a challenge to higher education to place greater emphasis on teaching. While professors at many colleges may be experts in their content area, many know little about the art of teaching. In some cases, teaching may even be seen as an interference with their primary goal of research.
Shulman's essays turn attention toward teaching with a careful consideration of the sensitivities of higher education faculty. His first unit focuses around learning as a process that can be understood and supported. He provides gentle arguments with practical suggestions while demonstrating that a focus on learning is a significant responsibity of the academic profession.
His second unit focuses on changing the role of teaching within the professorate. He argues that expert teaching exists and can be taught. Furthermore, creating a culture where teaching is taught in doctoral programs and is treated in a scholarly manner with peer review and dissemination would increase both the quality and prestige of teaching activities within higher ed.
The third unit offers practical suggestions for improving teaching and supporting teaching.
This book would be useful to a reading/ discussion group for faculty. The only criticism that I would offer of this book is a natural result of its format. As a collection of essays, transitions are sometimes not obvious and there is some overlap between chapters. Nevertheless, the collection is well-organized and surprisingly cohesive. As always, Shulman offers a gentle challenge.

                          Book Description

Owning and managing forest lands is an inherently legal endeavor. From forest acquisition to deeds and boundaries, from timber sales to bequests, few things can be done without confronting laws, rules, regulations, and traditions that define acceptable and unacceptable practices. For most owners, managing forests is a learn-as-you-go proposition, and too often a crash course in law follows a disagreement.

Legal Aspects of Owning and Managing Woodlands is both an accessible overview of the privileges, rights, and obligations that accompany forest ownership, and a guidebook to help active forest managers use laws to their advantage and avoid the pitfalls of expensive and exhausting litigation.

Chapters examine all aspects of woodland ownership and management, from general issues to specific concerns, including:

The book breaks new ground by examining legal matters in practical, everyday language. It provides clear and concise descriptions of often confusing concepts and difficult subjects, and addresses issues in a competent yet conversational tone. It is not intended to take the place of legal advice, but it will help forest owners understand an essential body of law, enabling them to ask the right questions of their attorneys, consulting foresters, and all those they encounter in the complex task of owning and managing land.

In my opinion, this is the best book on process improvement on the market today. It takes up where so many other books fear to tread and deals with practical issues of organizational dynamics. An excellent companion volume to the CMM, SPICE, or other technical framework.

I came across this book at a time when I was dealing with major changes in my organization. Since I was Vice President level, I had to sell my colleagues on many of the things I thought necessary for our survival all of which meant a change in process and thinking. I was a change agent. This book championed me through the steps required to meet the task. We did very well as we brought about a change in culture and in the way we would "do business".

Measuring the Effectiveness of Competitive Intelligence: Assessing & Communicating CI's Value to Your Organization, by Jan P. Herring, 1996, 1999(2nd ed.), Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals, 77 pages.

Competitive Intelligence (the legal collection and analysis of information regarding capabilities, vulnerabilities, and intentions of business competitors) must be "measured" to be valued by companies. Senior management expects CI to lead to appropriate and timely actions that will have a tangible impact on the business. Based on that premise, the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) sponsored research to identify useful Measures of Effectiveness for evaluating Competitive Intelligence operations. This report, by SCIP Meritorious Award winner Jan P. Herring, includes a CI Evaluation Process for determining your management's needs, expectations, and decision-making style, and advice on aligning CI operations with company goals, measuring the results in quantitative terms, and communicating the measured results to the entire organization. The findings and recommendations presented in this report mark an important milestone in furthering the development of CI as a profession.

I am always very hesitant to give a negative review. I am sure that Jan Herring's intent was to deliver something of real value. Sadly, this book falls short of the mark. In short the information in the book is out of date and poorly presented.

The book was published several years ago and it shows. Much of the information is so old that developments since the book was published make many of the author's points moot.

In addition, the material is poorly presented. There are pages that look like they were taken directly from a presentation and stuck into the book. Often these slides while taking up space in the book do not add much value. Much of the information is simply a rehash of other papers that the author has read. Even with all this fluff the book is only 66 pages.

This book is certainly not worth its costs. Save your money and look for a more recent work.

                              Book Description

While millions face hunger, malnutrition, and starvation, the world's population is increasing by over 225,000 people per day, 80 million per year. In many countries, supplies of food and water are inadequate to support the population, so the world falls deeper and deeper into what economists call the "Malthusian trap," named for the writer whose work, more than any other, brought attention to the population dilemma. Philip Appleman's comprehensive introduction to Thomas Robert Malthus' seminal 1798 work traces the evolution of Malthus' idea and its validity through following generations.

The text is accompanied by explanatory annotations and excerpts from the revised edition (1803). Key eighteenth-century influences on Malthus are reprinted, including one by Benjamin Franklin.

Nine major assessments from the nineteenth century are reprinted, including—new to the Second Edition—those of Frances Pace and Harriet Martineau.

Contemporary commentary ranges widely through many schools of thought, from Lester R. Brown, Paul and Anne Ehrlich, and Garrett Hardin to Julian Simon and Pope Paul VI. All but one of the twenty-four selections are new to the Second Edition.

About the series: No other series of classic texts equals the caliber of the Norton Critical Editions. Book Description

Broader political and economic changes are dramatically reshaping rural and small-town communities in British Columbia and across Canada. Increasingly, however, much of the responsibility for community-based prosperity and survival is falling to communities themselves.

This book is drawn from a three-year participatory research project with four communities in British Columbia: two municipalities and two Aboriginal communities. The first part of the book examines historical and contemporary forces of restructuring, linking the development of rural communities with the legacy of resource development and Aboriginal marginalization across the province. The second part of the book presents the theoretical and practical dynamics of the community economic development (CED) process and outlines a variety of strategies communities can initiate to diversify their local economies.

Second Growth advances understanding of local development by addressing two important deficiencies in the CED literature. First, CED is a rapidly expanding field that requires enhanced theoretical direction and historical analysis. Second, there is a need for systematic case study analyses of CED strategies in rural, small-town conditions. As communities struggle to confront complex forces of change, sound theoretical frameworks and tested best practices are important tools in facilitating the prospects for a second growth in rural and small-town communities.

The book will appeal to educators and students of rural and economic geography, policy makers, and citizens who wish to better understand the transformations taking place across the rural landscape.

                                                      Book Description

Marketing Research for Managers, now in its second edition, is an easy-to-read, practical introduction to marketing research. It covers the range of marketing research techniques and describes how each stage in the research process is carried out with an appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses.

The purpose of the book is to enable managers to become more informed research users and buyers. The more managers know about how marketing research works, the more effective they can be in using it as a management tool.

More people suffer a disability before age 65 than die before age 65. This book shows how to manage a mid-career disabling experience - whether its your own or that of a relative, friend, client or colleague - from a personal financial and legal standpoint. The book guides you through government and private insurance and rehabilitation programmes, housing and living assistance, and legal and money management considerations for the disabled working person.
