Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Guide .......2007-09-10
This book really helped me to prepare for the gmat. The cd was somewhat useful. The prep test were similar to that of the real gmat, however the explanations for the answers were not that clear.
Poorly Written and Edited.......2007-08-08
After using numerous other GMAT preparation tools from Kaplan, GMAC, and elsewhere, the quality of this product is below subpar. Numerous typographical and logical errors are present in the text, including:
-Questions on reading comprehension sections that were not printed (page 18)
-Duplicate answer choices for a question (page 71)
-An apparenty inability to number questions from 1 to 41 (page 45)
Given the lack of attention to detail along with a number of questionable justifications for answers, I would not recommend this book to anybody. Go with Kaplan, Kaplan800, or Princeton Review instead.
Error-ridden and buggy.......2007-05-06
My husband has been out of school for over 25 years, when he decided he wanted to take a Masters degree, so we needed a really good test prep product. The book is just fine at explaining concepts and ideas, and providing test strategies. But the CD is deeply disappointing. The questions are full of errors, many of them simply a matter of poor proofreading (in one, the greater-than sign is reversed into a less-than sign, making the entire question unsolvable). My husband was two questions away from the end of one of the practice tests on the CD when it froze up. Am I too picky in thinking a test-prep product should have ZERO errors, and software that works consistently? I don't think so!
An O.K. Prep Guide.......2007-03-18
This book is not the best, but too bad either. I ended up NOT using the CD because I didn't want to take the chance of having it screwing up my computer. Now, I am not saying that the CD is defective because I don't know. I am just saying that I was a bit paranoid :) I really should've just bought the edition without the CD. The writing style of the book is good. My beef is mostly with the math review section and some of the testing hints. It has about 90-95% of the GMAT math topics. A few topics are mentioned for the first time in the answer section for the sample tests at the back of the book. There are also some typos in the percentage/fraction conversion tables in the math review section. My biggest beef is that the author forgot to update the testing techniques because he said to "work on famalier topics first" for the verbal section. Hmmm, this advice would've worked on paper-based GMAT, but NOT on the CAT version. The strategy for data sufficiency and the logic behind reading comprehension and critical reasoning are extremely helpful though. Contrary to what some people said about the previous edition of the book, I don't think there is any wrong answer for the questions IN the book (again, I don't know anything about the questions on the CD). Finally, the grammar review section is good and bad at the same time. It is helpful to know the correct grammar for general purpose, but the topics covered in the book are sort of "off" as far as GMAT questions are concerned.
Explantions and buggy software a problem.......2007-03-03
The book was decent with many practice problems, but the explanations were sometimes too complicated and not structured enough for you to truly understand it. The CD is buggy, occasionally it stop and all the answer are lost, which is a major pain. Also, the answers are not saved, so you cannot go back to the ones you got wrong later on. I do have not used any other books, so i am not sure how it compares.

Customer Reviews:
Don't buy it........2007-09-10
I bought this book at the spur of the moment at a local bookstore. This book is terrible. It has numerous flaws. The reasoning doesn't make sense. The analysis of the sample tests doesn't give you any tips on how to quickly arrive at the solution. This book is cheap compare other GMAT Prep book but it is still a waste of money.
Think about competitors too.......2006-11-10
I think competitors are much ahead of creating a CD which simulates the real exam. Also, I think that the emphasis on a computer based exam should be the computer trainings rather than the book examples. May be it is worth saying that the verbal part is a bit different from what competitors present and with this book in addition one can excel the GMAT exam
Full of mistakes - don't buy this book.......2006-06-14
I wasted two weeks with this book before I realized that it was full of errors. Every answer key has at least a few mistakes in it, and sometimes the answer explanations would say C) but then go on to describe why B) was the correct answer.
This book also does not mention the fact that it is a computer based test and that getting correct answers results in harder questions coming up - and that getting the early questions correct is the only way to get a higher score.
This book ALSO gives 5 practice tests that are organized into 7 sections - THIS IS NOT THE FORMAT OF THE GMAT EXAM. And I checked with a friend who confirmed that when he took the GMAT in 1999 it was in the same format it is now.
I'm not upset that I wasted $20 on this book, but I'm very upset that I wasted my time. This book very well could have hurt my score and my chances to get into a certain MBA program.
No shortcuts, no techniques, just bizarre!.......2006-03-22
This book is truly unusual and therefore a terrible place to start studying. The quantitative review pays no heed to the fact that you are sitting for a timed test and therefore must work efficiently, using shortcuts when possible. This book tells you the long way to get to the answer. For that, it is a decent way to go if you want to really re-learn the math that underlies the problems (for example, I found the Princeton Review book to have too many "tricks" and not enough real math review). I did learn a few things from it, but eventually abandoned it for Kapan and GMAC guides. Not a complete waste of time, but certainly not where I'd recommend beginning or ending your GMAT study adventure.
DO NOT BUY***DO NOT BUY***READ REVIEWS!.......2006-03-03
Boy, did I learn the hard way!
I bought this book at a bookstore before checking the reviews on this (and all GMAT Prep books) and boy, am I sorry.
$29.99 and countless hours of frustration, aggravation and tears, and then I logged in and read the other reviews. I wasn't stupid or crazy!
The tests were ridiculous. The answers were worse. I sent a sample question to three of the smartest people I know, and I mean Engineer-MBA-can't-beat'em-at-trivial-pursuit-and-know-everything-about-history-politics-religion-everything smart... and they scored as poorly as I did. Out of 6 questions on one reading comprehension sample, no one got more than 3 of them correct.
Then, when I turned to the answer key, the answer made no sense at all. I found myself turning pages and saying out loud: Is this the same question?? Am I on the wrong page? IT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THIS IN THIS READING!!! etc.
Whoever was responsible for editing this book must have been on vacation that day.
This book almost caused me to toss the idea of going back to school altogether. I graduated college 4 years ago, and after a few hours with this book was sure that I lost all brain cells in those 4 years.
This is the hands-down worst book you'll ever buy -- save yourself the time and money. Check out ALL reviews that Amazon offers -- so far, it looks like the Official Guide for the GMAT review looks best. Excellent reviews and lots of 'em.
Don't buy Barrons ANYTHING. Don't be fooled like me into believing they're a reputable name, so surely their book will be helpful. This book made me want to chuck myself over a bridge.
Reading reviews and purchasing based on that may be the SMARTEST THING YOU CAN DO.
oh and PS - DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!! (did I mention that??)

Fun Plays!.......2000-09-10
This book is great for a rainy-day afternoon, or a sunny morning, or for anytime! I found the 25 plays perfect for say a Drama/Theater class, but frankly, anyone person with an ounce of competitiveness in him would enjoy these skits... My favorite was 3. An Angry Customer, but all of them were good! They really teach you how to negotiate better thru the examples of the plays... Buy this book and have some fun!
Customer Reviews:
Timeless book.......2006-07-06
I believe I first read this book in the mid-1990's when I was working as a product manager for a software application. You will not find a better book to start your journey about understanding requirements. It is a great foundational book before you dive into sophisticated methods like Quality Functional Deployment (QFD). It was an amazing book to read at the time. I just picked up the book today to read a few sections. It's still a great read, it is timeless.
Premier Book on Requirements Exploration.......2006-04-06
Note the distinction, this is not about Requirements Management, but understanding how to generate and explore requirements for goodness. I love Weinberg because he always makes you think. He takes an unconventional approach and I have never yet read a book of his where I didn't come away with an epiphany, and a completely different understanding of the fundamental problems. Sections 9.2 and 9.4 are classic and worth the price of the book! If you read these and still can't understand why the requirements problem is Hard, change profession.
Time To Stop Printing.......2005-11-10
I buy a lot of books from amazon, and I rarely make any comments. The material and style of this book are outdated, and it is vague on content. The authors should make a revised version, or the book should no longer be printed.
Bottom line, do not buy it! I am returning my copy.
A "must read" book for anyone who designs systems.......2003-08-10
In a world where there is strong emphasis on project management skills and design skills, this is a welcome book that emphasizes that requirements must come first. The process of defining requirements is vital to success and, with good requirements, quality is assured. I recommend this book to anyone who works on solving problems or in building systems of any kind. Gause and Weinberg are excellent in presenting complex concepts in an entertaining and informative way.
There is a human tendency to want to rush into solutions as soon as an opportunity surfaces. And... the result is usually not what was needed. Then, there is a rush to "add quality" to the result by fixing the flaws. This is costly and often fatal to the project. This book takes the reader down a different road. A road of first defining the objective that is to be attained and being sure that all parties understand and agree to the requirements. If you only have a few books in your business library, this should be one of them. I shared my copy with so many colleagues that I finally had to buy another copy.
Should be 6 stars!.......2003-01-03
Like Weingerg's other books (and I have read them all -- most more than once), "Exploring Requirements" is about human nature, the way we react as individual beings to problems we encounter. Anyone looking for a canned methodology or "step-by-step" process to enable a system definition or design may be disappointed. But anyone who reads this will never react to any type of communication the same way again.
This is definitely not a technical book, nor even an IT book. It should be required reading for anyone whose job involves communication -- and that's just about everyone in business today. I have recommended it to all my managers and direct reports over the years since it was first published. I have also recommended it to trainers in public speaking and executive presentation skills. The writers' style is at once entertaining and instructive. Unless you are looking for a "cookbook," you won't be disappointed.

Book Description
Once the symbol of a robust steel industry and blue-collar economy, Youngstown, Ohio, and its famous Jeannette Blast Furnace have become key icons in the tragic tale of American deindustrialization. Sherry Lee Linkon and John Russo examine the inevitable tension between those discordant visions, which continue to exert great power over Steeltown's citizens as they struggle to redefine their lives.
When "the Jenny" was shut down in 1978, 50,000 Youngstown workers lost their jobs, cutting the heart out of the local economy. Even as the community organized a nationally recognized effort to save the mills, the city was rocked by economic devastation, runaway crime, and mob scandal, problems that persist twenty-five years later. In the midst of these struggles the Jenny remained standing as a proud symbol of the community's glory days, still a dominant force in the construction of both individual and collective identities in Youngstown.
Focusing on stories and images that both reflect and perpetuate how Youngstown understands itself as a community, Sherry Lee Linkon and John Russo have forged a historical and cultural study of the relationship between community, memory, work, and conflict. Drawing on written texts, visual images, sculptures, films, songs, and interviews with people who have lived and worked in Youngstown, the authors show the importance of memory in forming the collective identity of a place.
Steeltown U.S.A. is a richly developed portrait, showing how images of the Jenny and of Youngstown have been used in national media and connecting these representations to the broader public conversation about work and place. Bruce Springsteen's song "Youngstown," the book Journey to Nowhere, and other pop culture artifacts have helped make Youngstown the symbolic epicenter of American deindustrialization. And while many people see the need to get over the past and on with the future, in rushing to erase the difficult parts of Youngstown's history they might also forget the powerful events that made the city so important, such as the struggles for economic and social justice that improved the lives of steelworkers.
This multifaceted study helps us understand not only how the meaning of work has changed but also why the changing meaning of work matters.
This book is part of the CultureAmerica series.
Customer Reviews:
I lived in Briar Hill.......2007-07-03
Having live in Briar Hill in Youngstown, I found this book facinating. I read it in 5 days, & had a hard time putting it down! Youngstown, Oh has a proud history & has produced many sucessful people. I am passing the book along to all my local friends. Although Youngstown itself is very depressed, the sourounding area, Canfield, Poland, Boardman are equal to the finest comunities in the country. With the "working Class" mentality, many of us grew up with, there is nothing a "Youngstowner" can't accomplish.
I loved this book........2007-01-04
Sherry Lee Linkon and John Russo, Steeltown U.S.A.: Work and Memory in Youngstown (University Press of Kansas, 2003)
You don't really think of Youngstown as a place that would inspire a great amount of social criticism. In fact, if you're like most people, you really don't think of Youngstown much at all. It is a good thing that you are not Sherry Lee Linkon and John Russo, who do think of Youngstown as the kind of place that would inspire a great amount of social criticism. And then they went ahead and wrote Steeltown U.S.A.
It shouldn't surprise you that people writing a book about the real-world effects of deindustrialization on an American city are going to be approaching the subject from a populist viewpoint; what should surprise you is that Linkon and Russo do so in a way that even most fiction writers are incapable of: instead of moralizing at every turn, they sit back and let the story of Youngstown get the message across by itself, realizing that the stark images of the effects of deindustrialization will do all the necessary work. And it does. There's little more that will tell you "deindustrialization is bad, mmmkay?" as the plight of Youngstown from 1977 to the present day.
While it's been thirty years now since the first plant closings in Youngstown, there can be no question, in today's economy of outsourcing, that Steeltown U.S.A. is a timely book--perhaps timelier than it would have been, had it been released at any other time. It is solid, well-written scholarship, a piece of scholarly nonfiction that does its level best to read like its more popular counterpart, and succeeds more often than not. It will definitely get you thinking more, and harder, about Youngstown. One of the twenty-five best books I read in 2006. ****
A Book Of A Grand City & The People Who Made America Great!.......2002-11-10
What a superb book about a little known but renowned town known as Youngstown, Ohio. The text provides the history of this noble town from its founding to its growth to its impact upon the globe.
Youngstown became the center of the Steel Industry between Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Chicago where it help out building the modern world. It was at one time the largest producer of Steel. The authors explain how the town attracted people from all over the earth. How it became the cradle of middle class values created by the practice of hard work, smart thinking and support of family with the opportunities produced by the establishment of the steel and related businesses.
It also depicts how Youngstown became the border town between New York and Midwest based crime families fighting over turf, gambling and other vices that affluence often attract. At one time, Youngstown was known to be an open town where anyone on the run could be protected if they knew who to pay for sanctuary without judgment of deeds. The money from Youngstown used to bet on local sports to college to pro sports actually contributed to building Las Vegas. The region was only second to gambling behind Las Vegas from 1940 to 1990.
At the same time, the book explains how this great city and region was weaken with the subsequent loss of over 50,000 steel jobs. How it had to experience the loss of such jobs, tax revenues and opportunities. Yet, the town and people persevere in the face of such losses. In the 1950's two families in the name of DiBartolo and Cafaro were the largest builders of Shopping malls in America and based in Youngstown. Today, new businesses actually set up in Youngstown's suburb of Boardman before going national just to test the market place.
What few know is Bruce Springteen wrote the lyrics to "Youngstown" based upon interviews in this book. I highly recommend you take the time to read this exquisite book written by two great authors and about a town and its people known as Youngstown, Ohio. A grand town because of its people and how they influence the world in so many ways explained in volume in this book.

Book Description
In the early days of utility development, municipalities sought to shape the new systems in a variety of ways even as private firms struggled to retain control and fend off competition. In scope and consequence, some of the battles dwarfed the contemporary one between local jurisdictions and cable companies over broadband access to the Internet.
In this comparative historical study, Jacobson draws upon economic theory to shed light on relationships between technology, market forces, and problems of governance that have arisen in connection with different utility networks over the past two hundred years. He focuses on water, electric, and cable television utility networks and on experiences in four major American cities—Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh, arguing that information and transactions costs have played decisive roles in determining how different ownership and regulatory arrangements have functioned in different situations.
Using primary sources and bold conceptualizations, Jacobson begins his study by examining the creation of centralized water systems in the first half of the nineteenth century, moves to the building of electric utilities from the 1880s to the 1980s, and concludes with an analysis of cable television franchising from the 1960s to the 1980s. Ties That Bind addresses highly practical questions of how to make ownership, regulatory, and contracting arrangements work better and also explores broader concerns about private monopoly and the role of government in society.

Book Description
